Should the Xbox One Elite wireless controller have a built-in battery?

Keith writes: Since the start of the current-generation of console gaming, there's been a debate brewing. However it's not exactly one that you would think it would be about however. No, it's not able which system has the better games or who's got the best graphics or online abilities. No, instead this is one that is perhaps more evenly split and that is should wireless gaming controllers include batteries or not. It's not an age old dilemma mind you but it is one that begs to ask the question is it simply better for overall enjoyment when playing games or is it user preference.

And while several consoles have been able to utilize wireless controllers, such as Nintendo's Wavebird (still easily one of my favorite controllers) for the Gamecube, I'll only focus on the two players here, mainly the Sony SIXAXIS / Dual Shock 3 & 4 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers. In the Sony camp we have the Dual Shock series that features a built in battery, where the Xbox controllers utilize replaceable batteries, mainly double AA batteries that can also be substituted with both 1st and 3rd party battery packs. So in that respect, one would imagine that one would be better than the other, one trump card to rule them all. Right?

Nope

It's all about choice

Want normal batteries, use them

Want rechargeable batteries, use them

want a play and charge kit, use them

Take your pick, and the batteries wear out, like all batteries do normal or rechargeable, you don't have to replace the entire controller. And at $150, MS made the right choice.

seanpitt233531d ago

For that price it should batteries should be a thing of the past.

Spid3r63531d ago Show
Bigpappy3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

You can put any type of battery you want in Xbox controllers. The average person will not de-solder and solder batteries in, and would end up throwing away $150 controller. There are lots of less expensive options than using the official Xbox batt-pack. Nothing is for free and it would need to be a pop in and out rechargeable battery pack like I use right now.

mochachino3531d ago

DS4 is my favourite controller of all time but for a controller that's built to last, it's better that it has a removal/replaceable battery.

After a few hundred cycles the battery capacity decreases significantly. It's only a matter of time before every controller battery needs to be replaced, no matter what. What I would prefer, however, is a rechargeable (via the console) and replaceable high capacity lithium ion battery pack that is reasonably priced.

In 3 years the DS4's 6-8 hours battery will only last 4-6, two more years after that much less. We all eventually need to replace either the battery or controller.

Genuine-User3531d ago

There's no choice. I want a rechargeable controller out of the box. I don't want to spend extra money on a play and charge kit.

nix3531d ago

Wait.. This thing still has batteries...

Hahahahahahahahahagahmgaga..

Exari3531d ago

i have never replaced my ps3/4 controllers, and i have 5 ps3 and 3 ps4 controllers.

having to buy batteries is stupid.

"It's all about choice, unless your choice is built in batteries"

3530d ago
Sexius Maximus3530d ago

In this day and age gamers should NEVER have to tethered to their system by a cable because their battery died. Internal batteries would have been a terrible choice for a $150 controller. Removable batteries, whether rechargeable or normal, gives a gamer much more freedom.
I usually turn vibrate off too, so I can get 40+ hours off my Eneloops before they need replacement. No brainer.

DarkHeroZX3531d ago

Lol but you can replace the battery in both the DS4 and DS3. And a better longer lasting battery pack for $5. Lol sorry but regular batteries are played out.

vegasgamerdawg3531d ago

You can't buy good batteries for the X1 controller? Strange, I can and did.

DarkHeroZX3531d ago

Vegas its cheaper to buy 1 good rechargeable pack over multiple batteries over time lol. Get 14 hours with this as long as i don't have that mic plugged in or its like 7-8ish hours.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw...

meche3343531d ago

while that is true. we dont have to go through the hassle of taking our controllers apart and i doubt the longer lasting battery pack will last longer than a day of play time

bluebenjamin3531d ago

But isn't that the same as buying the play and charge kit for Xbox one?!

DarkHeroZX3531d ago

Meche I have that battery pack now. Thats how long it lasts.

TheCommentator3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

Lol, but you can buy 4aa's and a charger for $10, and each set will last between 20(Mp) to 40(SP) hours. I never need a cord... ever.

If built-in batteries are so great why don't they last more than 8 hours? If there are better batteries for a DS4 they should be in the controller already, right? I mean, defenders of built-in batteries often argue that one shouldn't have to spend extra on their controllers, but even with a better pack, a DS4 still won't last half as long as 2aa's will.

So, for $5 more a DS4 lasts about 14 hours and needs to be wired(cable not included, costs extra) in order to charge. For $10 more, an XB1 controller lasts 80 hours(2 sets at 40 hours per set), can be charged twice as many times because there are 2 sets to charge, and never needs a cable attatched.

Which has better value, choice, and convenience?

peshkavusCA3530d ago

And how many of us do you think will easily open our controllers just like you sir?

Some playstation controller batteries went bad and you couldnt replace them. They would only stay charged for a hour then fail. If you pay 150 dollars and the battery went bad there would be so much nerd rage. Microsoft did the right thing. I had like 5 battery packs for the 360 so i could always throw a fresh one in so its a way better choice. I hate phones with built in batteries why would i want a controller like that. If you are on a long plane ride you can always recharge you need a spare battery.

sinspirit3531d ago

You couldn't replace them? It's $5 online for a replacement battery. The chance of this was extremely small.

Many keep saying to buy the AA rechargeables. Yes. I love these things! Why can't they include these with even a $150 controller when the competition has been doing it with their normal priced controllers that already have more expensive features packed in along side the included battery?

awi59513531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

@sinspirit

Where was the replaceable battery for the ps3 i never saw them. Unless you had to crack open the controller or something.

Mega243531d ago

For that price, it should have been packaged with a Play and Charge kit, like the Silver Xbox 360 enhanced controller did.

Outthink_The_Room3531d ago

I agree. MS should definitely have included a play-and-charge kit. They're like $25 and obviously only cost like $6-7 to make anyways. Mark up is always really big on accessories.

It would have been a nice gesture for the core gamers, especially given the somewhat high price-tag. But it's always about bottom lines, so that wasn't gonna happen.

vegasgamerdawg3531d ago

Based on? How have you calculated the value? I'd be very interested on you evaluation. How much do they cost to make?
You didn't write that post before doing research and not having a clue what you're talking about, did you? Be honest, you're guessing, I can tell, lol.

freshslicepizza3531d ago

i think so too. might as well have the controller equipped with everything you need for that price.

PistolsAtDawn3531d ago

Exactly, maybe it should come with a rechargeable battery, but for a controller that costs $150, you don't want it being taken out of commission because of a dead battery....sure you can open it and replace it...but then having it be a "built in" battery just makes it more of a pain to change.

sinspirit3531d ago

That makes no sense. You can provide the same options with the controller itself. It's $100 more just for more switches, magnets, and adjustable tension. But, how is this worth three times the price of a normal controller? It's not that costly for these parts and features whatsoever. It should be $100 - $120 tops in my opinion.

What's so hard about including a play and charge kit with this controller at its current price?

You can pander on about the lack of included options as a saving grace for allowing more ways to go about it but at the end of the day it simply is out of cutting costs and wanting to sell these options as XBox accessories instead.

At this price range it should be rechargeable, but still have a slot to insert batteries. That is a real idea with a general purpose.

This could have a battery lasting days straight with the huge price tag that eclipses the actual production cost on this. We are in the modern age. If it doesn't include everything it needs it rarely should be taken seriously at a high price tag.

javauns3531d ago

Hell no, what happens when the battery mess up and can't hold a charge, u gotta buy a new controller or try to take it apart and replace it or hope its under warranty. If anything they should just give a plug n charge kit with it.

Allsystemgamer3531d ago

Buy a replacement battery? You just unscrew the controller....it's that simple...

javauns3531d ago

yea n then you void their warranty.

Fz6soldier3531d ago ShowReplies(1)
JustGamin853531d ago

I think for that price point they should not include them, as you mention of having a option should be present and also rechargeable batteries do wear out over time and i think that being able to buy a new pair of rechargeable batteries should be a given.. Of course people will disagree but to each their own, the better question i would like to bring up is should Sony make a high end controller? And if so should they come with a battery that has a better charge than DS4 or should is be removable like the xbox?

JonnyBigBoss3531d ago

I don't want to replace my controller when the lithium ion battery dies. So, rechargeables is the way to go.

LackTrue4K3531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

My chose is to have "built in battery"

It's like asking if I want it cordless. Which is also a "yes"

KiwiViper853531d ago

A built in battery requires a cord from time to time, no?

Replacement batteries or rechargable batteries do not. That might be a better option for you... Just sayin.

Gantrfaxx3531d ago

Yes, If i pay $150 for an overpriced joypad then i don't want to pay even for batteries to be able to use it. I want to save money, not throw it. That is why i use a joypad with a built in rechargeable battery.

tmh35933531d ago

The answer is simple. Buy some eneloop pro rechargeable batteries for cheap and never worry about any of the bullshit. You're welcome everyone problem solved.

Gantrfaxx3530d ago

So i need to buy an expensive joypad and then batteries?! How is that better than buying a joypad with a built-in battery? Isn't that cheaper and a more simple and better solution?

otherZinc3531d ago

Agreed!

No.

When that internal battery dies, I don't want to pay another $150.

I've yet to buy another 360 or XBOX ONE controller because of a silly internal battery that died.

The Elite Controller is better and $100 less than the 3rd party Pro Controller. M$ can't just give you everything, when they already make the best controllers on the market.

hello123531d ago (Edited 3531d ago )

xbox one controller can use batteries and play it wireless. You can use a usb cable and plug it into the controller and xbox one and play without batteries and lasts forever no charging. You have two choices.

PC now has a wireless adaptor for Windows 10

PS4 controller one choice the controller has to be charged constantly.

I'd pick the xbox one every day its easier and less hassle.

ziggurcat3530d ago

"xbox one controller can use batteries and play it wireless. You can use a usb cable and plug it into the controller and xbox one and play without batteries and lasts forever no charging. You have two choices."

... interesting because it's the *exact* same options people have with the PS4 controller... wired or wireless.

"PS4 controller one choice the controller has to be charged constantly."

PS4 controller is not a wireless-only, so you don't need to "constantly" charge the controller. i'm also pretty sure that you can even use the PS4 controller with your PC as well, so...

ger23963531d ago

It is about choice, I'm surprised Microsoft didn't go with a built-in battery to be more eco friendly.

KilKarazy3531d ago

What happens when the battery inside the controller starts to die? The controller becomes worthless.

StormLegend3531d ago

That rarely happends....

It takes years for the battery to die.

Kiwi663531d ago

Thats why i don't get why people say a built in battery is better as its cheaper to buy a play'n'charge kit than it is to buy a new controller when the battery dies

jukins3531d ago

When's that happen have a launch ps3 six axis that still holds several hours charge.

DarkHeroZX3531d ago

Lol you can buy a replacement battery pack that lasts longer for extremely cheap. The new internal i got gets me about 14 hours as long as I'm not using the mic and the light is on dim.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw...

SUCKxITxEZ3531d ago

Uh, why not just include a rechargeable battery pack that you can replace eventually on your own? What happens when the included non rechargeable batteries run out? The exact same thing, only I cant even recharge those.

sinspirit3531d ago

What happens when any extremely rare hypothetical situation is used in an argument? Oh, that's right. It holds no water.

Are you going to tell me you personally have had a rechargeable controller die on you? I've never had this happen and my controllers are 10 years old. My old smart phones still work to this day and with very minuscule loss of battery life.

Ah, and if it really bothers you you can buy a replacement battery online for like $5. That controller that lasted years and years saving you dozens of dollars on batteries that would already afford you a new controller? Yeah. Just buy a new battery for it for next to nothing and replace it. I don't see how you can keep sinking money into throwing away batteries, one of the worst items to go in the trash. If you own several rechargeable then you might have a point. But, the controllers should come with rechargeable AA anyways if you love them so much. That is absolutely no excuse.

Fz6soldier3531d ago

You can buy replacement batteries for the ds3/4. you just have to open the controller.

JackBNimble3531d ago

@kiwi
How is it cheaper to buy a play and charge kit above and beyond the cost of a controller ?
You guys who think that play station controllers just stop holding a charge are flat out wrong. I'm not saying that it's never happened , but I have never seen it, and I game more then anyone that I know.

Every option to power up an xbox controller cost extra money ,don't try feed us this nonsense that any of your options are cheaper . And if you're paying $150 for a controller MS should at the very least include a play and charge kit.

awi59513531d ago

@KilKarazy
It may not die but it wont hold a charge for crap. Those 360 batteries died fast after you had them a while. And the more you charge those batteries the faster they start to die.

Lawsuit continues to pursue action over ‘drifting’ Xbox controllers

I was wondering if something was up with these controllers. I have a friend that had multiple Xbox controllers with drift issues ... Seemed like more than just bad luck

pocolocoX1721d ago (Edited 1721d ago )

Thats weird, me and my friends have over 20+ controllers and none of them have drift. Not saying it can't happen but maybe it IS bad luck. I think it's mostly isolated to the Elite Series 2 being the newest controller.

1721d ago
lukasmain1721d ago

20+ controllers? You ever wonder why you guys need so many controllers? Maybe it's because their build quality sucks.

Imortus_san1721d ago

This is a problem that occour in all controllers from all brands due to users making a lot on stress on analogue, some controllers are less resistance them other like the Switch, but that the way it is.

I never had this problem on any controller of any brand in my 32 years of gaming, on the other hand I know people that have this problem in every controller after 6 months.

darthv721720d ago (Edited 1720d ago )

I have close to 40 xbo/ps4 controllers and none of them have drift issues. I bought them all 2nd hand and you would think they should (with the way some wrench on the sticks) but thankfully they do not. My son's xbo has developed stick drift as well as one of his ds4 so I let him use a couple of my spares. Not the fancy ones though... just regular ones.

nibblo1721d ago (Edited 1721d ago )

I have 4 controllers one of them is an original from back in 2013 when the console was released which did eventually get some drift on the left stick after about 3 years all the others haven't including my Elite V2 and I do tend to put my controllers through the wringer. I have no idea why you have so many friends who seem to get this issue as none of my friends with Xboxes have reported it. Maybe anecdotal evidence from people you know is not used in law courts for a reason? However I do think that all console manufacturers should extend their warrantee for this, 90 days is pretty stingy for something like stick drift.

CorndogBurglar1721d ago

I mean, there's a lawsuit against the Elite 2 controllers drifting. So its clearly something that happens. Did you ever think that you were lucky that the ones you have just don't have that issue?

Lostbytes1720d ago

Drift happens, no really. It is caused by a combination of ware and dirt. Every single one of my controllers develop drift. Without fail. To be fair, i am not kind to my controllers. They get used on the daily for 3-5 hours and 10-15 hour sessions are not too infrequent. Hands covered in chip residue, spills on and around them. TBH, I always get the 2 year add on warranty from Best Buy. Then trade them in when it starts happening. Trade for a new one. Then get a new warranty (40$ for Elite Controller, 20$ for normal) on that one, Rinse and repeat. I did this 5 time with the original Elite, with the last time paying the additional 30 bucks for the upgrade to V2. Still going strong.

Seraphim1721d ago (Edited 1721d ago )

that's because on PS4 you often won't notice it. I've had controllers that work perfectly fine then while playing some game I put the controller down and notice L3 is drifting. Sometimes simply clicking the analog in and rotating clears it up for good or for a while. But imo, from what I've experienced, it's pretty minimal and something that can be easily overlooked or go unnoticed.

As for the mention of triggers below. Sony has made changes to the triggers over the course of each DS4 generation. There's at least 3 generations of DS4s. The latest bolstering the trigger somewhat.
