Despite the recent deluge of nostalgia evoking retro games, complete with 8 or 16 bit graphics, Shovel Knight manages to stand out from the crowd by effortlessly capturing that sensation of magical wonder I used to feel when sitting cross-legged in front of my family’s woodgrain CRT television, battling my way through hordes of simplistically rendered but ingeniously designed enemies in titles like Super Mario Bros. and the Mega Man series.
