If I had to pick one series where voice acting was essential, it's Portal. Nearly all of the humor would have been completely lost if the dialogue was all text-based.
Vaas is an excellent choice, that game would be so much lesser without that character.

A lot of people seem to play down Nolan when it comes to Troy, little unfair in my opinion.
Nolan was one of the first people, with Uncharted, that brought voice acting and motion capturing together within gaming. It had probably been done before but it was with Uncharted (especially Among Thieves) that gaming took it more seriously.
