Might and Magic has a devout but decidedly niche following of which I’ve never been a part. I just wasn’t drawn in by its relatively generic brand of fantasy, which relied heavily upon recycling race types, magic, and themes well established in more prominent and polished fantasy media.
But the Heroes of Might and Magic games – which, after being sold to Ubisoft, eventually evolved into Might & Magic Heroes – had a heavy focus on turn-based tactics both inside and outside of combat. I’m a bit of a sucker for slower-paced strategy games with a focus on planning, so they sometimes catch my eye. I’ve played about half of these games to date.

Today, they announced they'd be putting power into community hands with Steam Workshop support."
Is this even worth playing? Ive only played HoMM3 and enjoyed it. Does anyone recommend any of the other entries in the series?
In Heroes VII, the Duke Ivan calls forth advisers to discuss how to deal with a new threat, as the Empress was recently murdered. Left in her wake are many rivals who wish to conquer the kingdom. Each of the six factions has a story to tell, and you can play as each of them in the interactive retelling of their stories. After completing a minimum of two of them, you can go on to Ivan's final campaign to resolve the issue at hand.
Heroes of Might & Magic IIII was the last good HoMM game. You want a good fantasy turn-based strategy game? Go play Age of Wonders 3 or AoW: Shadow Magic.
