BNR: If you know me, you know that I've been a fan of the Humble Bundles for a long time. I've stuck with the service through the bad stuff as well as the good stuff. This week there's been some disappointing stuff going on with Humble and it seems that they've caused a bit of a controversy with the Humble Monthly Bundle.
In case you've not heard of it, the Humble Monthly Bundle is a subscription-based service for video games- you can pay $12 a month to have what's being called a "highly curated" bundle of games shipped to your inbox. There's no word on what these games are going to be- and that has a lot of people upset. It seems that the Humble Monthly Bundle is everything that the Humble Bundles were meant not to be. It's not transparent, it's not DRM-free (Humble promises that the games will work with "Steam for Windows" but nothing more), you can't pay what you want, there's no cross-platform guarantee and $0.60 of the bundle goes to charity- specifically to the "Paypal Giving Fund".
Starlight Children's Foundation and Humble Bundle have raised more than $500,000 in donations to support children's hospitals.
The Humble Pixel Pride Bundle just launched recently. It has seven games including Celeste, Super Lesbian Animal RPG, Boyfriend Dungeon, and more. A percentage of sales support The Trevor Project.
Well. They should at least put in games that started as LGBT not the tokenism that some of these title later did. Celeste is one such example. A developer later confirms she's trans but admits that wasn't the case before. Therefore the character development there has nothing to do with LGBT pride or anything.
At least put in real ones.
The Humble Must-Play Metroidvania Bundle just launched with Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and more. As always, a percentage supports charity.
The Humble Monthly Bundle just seems so poorly thought-out, and so off-beat for Humble. They're usually really good but this is basically Steam (DRM) for Windows-only games, that you don't choose or even know what they are, you can't choose your charity, and only $0.60 of that $12 goes to charity. It's just so unlike Humble.
PS+ is $9 a month, what?
