Visage Looks Like a Mash-Up of The Grudge, Allison Road and Slender Man, Now on Steam Greenlight

OnlySP: Horror games and horror movies are much alike: they prey on the primal fear of the unknown. That is exactly what sets up players for scares galore in SadSquare Studio’s upcoming first-person psychological horror game, Visage.

I really hope there is very few of the extremely loud jumpscares because its just annoying rather than scary. I mean if that eye on the TV just appeared and maybe the lights went out or something for a moment, i would find that creepier but overall, i am loving what i am seeing here and will definitely get it once its out.

_-EDMIX-_3540d ago

"i would find that creepier but overall" Agreed! Metadiegetic sound or sound used on screen to convey something to the audience not heard by the character I feel is a very lame and old way to try to convey "da scares"

I feel it hurts a film or clearly in this case game as what the user is scared of is the sudden shriek of the sound and not the idea or concept being presented.

Horror films that used sound amazingly (Halloween! even though I feel its more so a suspense then a horror)

and Insidious which used sound amazingly!

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

At 1.11min your shocked because your taken out of the normal horror convention of "sound=scare" and your not sure what to expect, your not even sure what your looking at, the scary part comes from realizing your not suppose to be seeing that in your home lol, clearly.

Then at the ending of that video where the child runs out, no loud shocking sound....just him walking out...your not busy jumping from a sound, your literally trying to comprehend what your looking at and the focus is on the concept of a ghost child and not "LOUD SOUND YA'LL". Was surprised to get a film like Insidious as I've long thought the days of respectable horror where gone, the director does a great job with The Saw and Insidious series, let the content be the horror, leave the sound to rock bands lol

Lets hope they tone down the sound "jumpscares" and let the user focus on what isn't suppose to be there or the whole "spot the not" type scare as that child in Insidious dancing is scary based on knowing such a thing shouldn't be feasible, not based on "loud sound", I want to be able to get what is "normal" in that house hold as to get what shouldn't be.

You know your house....you know what is suppose to be where and what happens at what time etc, let the user have that for a while, because you damn well know if you woke up and something speaking, moving etc that clearly wasn't suppose to be there...you wouldn't need a sound que to void your bowels lol. Its why I feel the scene from Insidious is important to show that sound is not needed to scare someone, realistically your going to be scared at what your looking at if you where in that situation.

DarkOcelet3540d ago

James Wan also did an excellent job in The Conjuring too :)

You nailed it, unfortunately the devs of the game said Jumpscares will play a big part in this game and tbh i don't like the sound of that, i mean let the scene and the atmosphere do the talking. No need for a loud sound to accompany it unless they can do it right.

That said, it will be very interesting to see this game in VR. This could be the device seller for me lol.

_-EDMIX-_3540d ago

Love that film! That sucks that the developers are going that route. Though gaming is a diverse medium like no other, we still have C rate games just as much as we will have C rate Horror films lol.

I'll also love to play this in VR either on PC or if they bring it to console which this gen seems to be a given for any small team now to focus on bringing it everywhere.

Well this and Allison Road. I feel on PC the community has already sold me on VR, I just have to pic a device, either Oculus Rift which I've used before or Vive which folks are stating is actually pretty good compared to the Rift and will support Steam.

But I would very much hold off on buying VR on PC until a good title releases that I want to use it for, like this or Allison Road.

DarkOcelet3540d ago (Edited 3540d ago )

Visage, Allison Road and Layers Of Fear are going to be VR titles is the best thing for a horror fan.

I am pretty sure VR will get tons of support, but the question is how many of those will be AAA quality stuff. And what kind of rig do you need in order to achieve an amazing visual fidelity in it.

I mean i have a MSI GT80 with GTX980m SLI which is equivalent to a Desktop GTX980 and have reached higher benchmark/frame rates than Titan X in some games but i dont think it will be able to handle those VR games at 60fps with Ultra or even High visuals.

Only time will tell.

_-EDMIX-_3540d ago

Agreed. Those specs merely get you into using VR, they don't get you using it at a high fidelity in terms of high frames as much acceptable frames.

I'm prepared to get the rig for it as I'm due for an upgrade later next year and my price is pretty high with my next build, like $1300 high. The quality of the support is very, very important, it can't merely just be a camera replacement as when I first used the Oculus Rift for Fallout 3 on a Friends computer, I felt it was a slight disconnect as when you move your head, the gun is always with you lol, as if your whole torso is just moving lol That is when I realized that VR is more then just a display replacement, games must be actually specifically made for VR.

Independents have the tools to really set themselves apart if they support VR correctly. They can't let the community have the final say on some of those experiences as it might end up hurting some of there future plans if many people feel it can't be done right based on what modders have done with VR and not the actual developers. I think more advance VR titles will come around in a few years when the PC market shifts and enthusiast builds now are tomorrows middle tier builds. Thats when we'll see lots of titles that are much advance come out, when its more profitable for them to be made and supported.

Goodness this game looks stunning. So glad someone made a game that looked nearly exactly like PT. And wow is that house massive. I for sure have to get this.

_-EDMIX-_3541d ago

It looks really good, but a bit rough. If this is early...oh boy they have a lot going for them! lol

They have some work to do in shaping up the game a bit as graphically, I'm not sure if its how it looks, or just that they still need to arrange the lighting a bit.

I'll likely buy this and Allison Road as I'm a sucker for good design and horror! lol

I think horror titles are my biggest weakness, in film and in gaming.

My film professor pointed it out to me as several times for examples, I used certain films like Rose Mary's baby, The Exorcist, Battle Royale etc lol. It might be the only genre besides RPGs that I seemly always have some huge collection of.

" And wow is that house massive"

Agreed, slightly OT but could you imagine next gen having an open world game that looks like this in VR?

I'm waiting for that one game that comes out and just states "every house, building, store etc you see.......fully exploreable", watch..its going to be that one E3 where a few people shed tears.

Thanks for you comments guys, I'm the co-founder of SadSquareStudio. I don't know if it was a misunderstanding, but we are NOT looking for a jump scares fest in Visage, we are aiming at the complete opposite direction to be honest. Our main elements to make this experience a truly horrifying one are : the uncanny, the uncertainty and the unknown. With those elements I can guarantee you a chilling journey in our game. The game will be even more polished visually in its final release. Keep the comments going and support us on Steam Greenlight if our game is interesting you.

Cheers
Jonathan Vallieres

They really should give you a 30 day notice on games leaving. At this point you only have a few weeks

GrmpyolGamer 997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

They do. But you gotta have something to complain about I guess 🤷

crazyCoconuts997d ago

Please find an article older than a day ago that states, say that The Somnium Files are leaving GamePass and I'll gladly admit my error.

TGGJustin997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

They never give you a 30 day heads up. Games leave the service twice a month; once in the middle and once at the end. You get a two week heads up each time before games leave. So when these games leave at the end of the month you'll find out which games are leaving in the middle of October and have 2 weeks to play them. As of right now no one knows which games those will be.

If you are going to try and say someone is complaining and tell them they're wrong maybe be sure you got your facts straight.

Xristo997d ago

If you have Game Pass, they tell you on the front page which games are leaving soon and the date. Only those who don’t have GP rely on websites for that info.

crazyCoconuts997d ago

So you're saying on the app, these games were announced as leaving at the beginning of September, but still somehow all the websites reporting on the games leaving just started doing so like a day ago. And all the articles reporting the games leaving at the beginning of September left these same games out for some reason. I mean, it's possible but would be really weird

MadLad997d ago

They have their games up for 6 months to a year, or even more than that.

The majority of the people who wanted to play those titles would have already.

I know backlog happens, but still. If you're interested in playing a game, you shouldn't wait even six months and complain you didn't have enough time to play it.

theindiearmy997d ago

They used to. Now half a month seems to be the trend for some reason.

Jericho1337997d ago

2 weeks is enough notice. Plus if you really want to keep playing then buy it.

So your not up to date with the service you pay for since it’s listed on the front page. You would like random 3rd party websites you don’t pay for to write an article for you to remind you and maybe keep writing daily update articles in case you miss it.

Well good for you Phil has rented a car and plane with signs to circle your house daily to remind you. In addition the power company will be adding the service for you shortly.

Slime Rancher
Lemnis gate
Going Under
Subnautica: Below Zero
Dandy Ace
Unsighted
AI: The Somnium Files
Astria Ascending
The Procession to Calvary
Visage

traumadisaster996d ago

The best would be full dates of starting and ending. Fan boys saying that’s not desired. Now most people get their value for the service so it kind of seems worthwhile to put up with 2 to 4 weeks but certainly it’s not desirable.
