PS Vita CPU clockspeed finally unearthed and it's slower than we all expected

It turns out that the PS Vita's CPU is clocked slower than we all expected (something in the ballpark of 800MHz).

However, Sony made the right decision here -- it's in everyone's interests that the Vita sustains that maximum performance over lengthy play sessions, offering great battery life to boot. This should be applauded.

Wow, wasnt it originaly reported that Vita was supposed to have like, 1.2-1.6GHz clockspeed?

I mean, its all right if developers find the 800MHz speed sufficient but its still kind of interesting.

Does Vita have PS2 classics? Like emulated classics and not the remastered ones?

donwel3546d ago

I'm sure the Vitas 800MHz CPU was already common knowledge, I'm sure I read it through an article on here a year or 2 ago. Well I suppose it's nice to have it reiterated.
To answer your question, no the Vita doesn't get emulated PS2 classics.
It does have a few remasters like the Jak and Daxter trilogy and the Sly collection.

Eidolon3546d ago

It's not 800, it's 44-444mhz. pretty sad

dantesparda3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

Next we are going to find out that the PS4 isn't even 1.6GHz, but something slower. Same thing with it the GDDR5 which is supposed to be 5500Mhz, bet you we'll find out that slower too. This is so typical of Sony.

WitWolfy3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

Well If I'm not mistaken, wasnt the Vita like unlocked recently? By that I mean, didnt Sony take off limitations for future devs to get more out of the device anyways?

Yodagamer3546d ago

They let the devs start using more memory, but it takes away some multitasking for apps.

Yui_Suzumiya3546d ago

MGS HD Collection.. Zone of the Enders and Silent Hill HD Collections were cancelled for Vita.

Hold_It3546d ago

MGS HD Collection came out though? I have the physical cartridge.

Revengeance3546d ago

MGS HD Collection is already on Vita.

ZoE Collection was cancelled for Vita.

nodim3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

There never was a SH HD Collection for Vita.

Eidolon3546d ago

@novurdim
Because it was cancelled?

rawshack3546d ago

Silent hill 2 on vita would have been cool

DarXyde3546d ago

You're telling me the HD collection cartridge that's in my Vita isn't really there?

Years before Metal Gear Solid V is released and I'm seeing phantoms, apparently.

UKmilitia3546d ago

i think if im not mistaken they reduced the clock speed to make the battery last longer.

disgaeapuchi3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

Sadly, Eidolon is right, Vita's CPU operates between 44-444mhz (click through to the article), which is the surprising part as we all expected 800MHz or abouts.

My bad for mentioning 800mhz as the speed we expected in the description, rather than the actual speed of the CPU (333MHz at default with dynamic scaling of 44-444MHz. The 800MHz is what most people "in the know" thought Sony would have chosen as its max clock speed, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

It actually makes a lot of sense that Sony went for something like 400mhz as they are carrying double the cores of the iPhone 4s which was released at the same time with its Cortex A9 cores at 800MHz. (Vita, as you know, is a quad core CPU). The article explains things a lot better mind, and it's definitely a smart decision on Sony's front

Considering this revelation, I'm amazed how Killzone looks and plays on it.

WitWolfy3546d ago

Uncharted Golden Abyss too..

Vegamyster3546d ago

Framerate is a bit iffy on it.

Vegamyster3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

@swice

A game that can hold a solid 30 fps?

Performance is iffy regardless of the people disagreeing with me, if you play something like Gravity Rush which is also a very pretty game you'll see the difference, it still drops but not nearly as much. https://youtu.be/ybdEvKmi1C...

Forum_Pirate3545d ago

It drops playing Dragons Crown too. I love my vita, and you guys can hurl all the disagrees you want but if you think more demanding games don't run into slowdown you're straight up wrong.

PhucSeeker3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

Thinking back, Killzone merc was so great with its tight gameplay and top-notch graphics but it sold so poorly that it ended up being one of many biggest reasons why Sony doesn't make 1st party games anymore. Such a goddamn shame!

meatnormous3546d ago

I loved Killzone on it. I thought it was a better game than shadow fall.

Pillsbury13546d ago

I still play it to this day, it's great for 1 or 2 quick matches on the go.

freshslicepizza3546d ago

why does it take hackers for this information to come out?

Hold_It3546d ago

Because the only "support" Sony has for the Vita are the controversial "System Software Stability" updates which patch all the things hackers try to do with the system.

Of course some people will label this type of information as a conspiracy, but the information is out there if you look for it and know where to look.

The next hack coming out will allow those who don't update to the new firmware to remove save protection so you can use saves from other accounts, free trophies, make all Vita games on the PSTV compatible, switch accounts on the Vita without having to erase everything, and a lot more.

AHall883546d ago

This is true.
Sony is determined to keep the Vita from becoming PSP 2.0 for hackers.
Sadly that seems to go hand-in-hand with taking focus off AAA games too though.

Eidolon3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

PSP was so hackable, maybe the Vita wouldn't be "dead" if they just let it happen, to an extent.

jebabcock3546d ago (Edited 3546d ago )

Soo.. I don't get it... why are people trying to trash Sony for this. The games were good. The battery on the vita lasts forever. Knowing the cpu speed now means nothing other than there are obviously more important factors to handheld gaming performance than high cpu speed.

Echo4193546d ago

Pretty sure this was widespread knowledge years ago...

No surprise here folks.

Switch 2 accessory makers are “working hard” on magnetic analogue sticks to combat stick drift

Nintendo Switch 2 stick drift is already an issue, but accessory makers are already working on magnetic joysticks.

I've never had stick drift in any controller I've ever owned. All my joycons (3 sets) from my Switch are perfectly fine. My Switch 2 ones are good. Never had a dualshock / dualsense have it (did have a dualshock get a stuck trigger once). Even my Valve Index controllers which were notorious for drift were fine for me.

Goodguy014d ago

Varies. Just because you've never had one doesn't mean others won't. I've had PS, Xbox, and Nintendo controllers indeed drift on me. Remember the drift lawsuits that Nintendo has had.

Please stop trying to say that traditional potentiometers are absolutely fine when hall effect/tmr sticks are beyond superior lol, not sure why so many people keep trying to defend potentiometers when hall effects are so pro consumer.
Companies like nintendo, sony, and mcsft don't want to implement them simply because they want you the consumer to keep buying them. Most casuals will just buy a new controller if theirs difts, easy money for the big 3.
I've gone hall effects and have never gone back, can leave my controllers out absolutely fine without worry of dust ruining the sticks.

Neonridr4d ago

when did I say that traditional joysticks are absolutely fine? I'm sharing my own experience here. I never said that others don't experience issues, nor that this is somehow acceptable. Strange leapfrog from A to B on that one.

People love to say it's a huge widespread issue, yet you only hear about it because the minority is vocal whereas the majority don't report anything because they are fine.

I'm happy you switched to hall effect sticks, if that's what works for you, then awesome.

Christopher4d ago

Cool? Pretty sure this is for those who are having it happen. Not sure how your anecdote addresses other peoples' problems.

Neonridr4d ago

people around here act like everyone will get drift. I'm willing to wager more people won't get drift than will.

Pyrofire953d ago

lucky you. I've only had minor drift once in my L Joycon which I fixed with some card stock, but drift is an undeniable problem as a whole.

repsahj3d ago

My 2 sets of Joy-Cons from my OG Switch started to drift with just a month of use. That is why I bought Dobe Joy-Cons with just $25, and until now they are still fine. I hope this will never happen again on my Switch 2.

jznrpg2d ago

My left joy con for the OG Switch got stick drift right away as well. I never had issues with my PS5 controllers since launch until I got my kids PS5’s and they had stick drift with 2 controllers. They drop them because they are kids and although I have them wash their hands before gaming they still get gunk under them somehow. I got their controllers modded because they would have issues no matter what I have them do.

jambola2d ago

"people around here act like everyone will get drift. I'm willing to wager more people won't get drift than will."
no, nobody is acting like that, you're jsut exaggerating it and lying to downplay a problem

-Foxtrot2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Nintendos biggest defender on here so it figures

gold_drake2d ago

you know, i said the same thing not too long ago and then BOOM both controllers ha.

one on the moving stick and one on the look around stick.

both suck arse. ha

The tech is already there. I had a couple of my PS5 controllers modded with Hall Effect modules and they work great. They should come standard with them these days but they don’t.

OtterX3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Nyxi already made some fantastic Hall Effect controllers for Switch 1. I don't know why Nintendo couldn't have it by now if Nyxi has had for years.

spoonard3d ago

Cheap, frictionless sensors ALREADY exist. Why are they "working hard to combat stick drift"? Stick drift should be a thing of the past at this point. The technology is here...NOW. It has been...for YEARS! Why is stick drift even still spoken about? It shouldn't exist!

Chocoburger2d ago

Because its a scam for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft to sell more overpriced controllers.

jambola2d ago

because pathetic fanboys will continue to defend and support

Doomeduk2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

WD 40 if it's shagg.d anyway why not ? I ordered a new ps5 pad after Helldivers 2 and POE 2 became unplayable due to drift but in the meantime I fired a bit of WD on my balls just below my stick rotated in a clockwise fashion massaging it in so to speak and also did the pin reset thingy and all clean no drift and hit that cancel purchase button like I meant it

UltimateOwnage2d ago

Honestly I’ve used my original Switch JoyCons and Pro Controller since launch and only in the last year did I see drift start to show up on one of my JoyCons. I’m sure it happens depending on how much and how firm the joystick is used, but it seems like a minor issue that goes with wear and tear after thousands of hours of play. I wish there had been Hall Effect sticks on Switch 2 just so there’s one less thing to worry about, but I’m not really concerned about it.

I’m hoping Xbox Showcase will be where the Remake gets announced… freaking all this stuff with FF9’s anniversary and still nothing on the Remake…
