Review: Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf | Nintendo Life

NL:
Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf was originally developed by Koei and released for the PC-8801, PC9801, and the MSX in 1992. The following year, Genghis Khan II saw releases for MS-DOS, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, PC Engine CD, NES, and SNES. Five more years later, and the game would see another release on the Sony PlayStation. And you thought the EA Sports games saw ridiculous multiplatform releases? It now arrives in its SNES form on the Wii U Virtual Console.

NintendoLife: Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf Review

NintendoLife writes: "Koei's 'Universal Ruler' simulator lets you live the life of the Mongol legend himself. You'll go where he goes, defile what he defiles and eat who he eats. But before you misjudge this game as an indecipherable Japanese take on medieval Mongolian life, understand that Genghis Khan II is actually a conquer the world style game (think Risk meets Civilization) in which you can play a variety of different countries ranging from England to the Byzantine Empire, to Japan, and yes, even Mongolia. The first Genghis Khan game in the series offered perhaps the best example of the genre. So does the sequel build on that foundation?"

IGN: Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf Review

IGN writes: "You can tell that Koei, at the time of this game's release, had gotten several key aspects of its historical strategy games right -- the overall world conquest, the military planning. But the unrefined, unpolished combat just goes to show how far tactics games have come since 1993, when this game first arrived. Fans of Koei's other releases will love this one. Fans of more modern games with more well-polished and accessible unit combat, like Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre, will think the system seen here is a bit too archaic to love. Make your downloading decision based on which of those two camps you'd most align yourself with -- and then keep an eye on future Monday morning press releases, because something tells me there will be more from Koei where the first four came from".
