Can Xbox One catch up with PS4? Microsoft is in it for the long run

DS:
Although it's been a while since we've had any official figures, it's common knowledge that the PS4 is ahead of the Xbox One in terms of sales.

Microsoft has been willing to adapt and change its strategy with the Xbox One, but does the company believe it can catch up with Sony's machine?

For me as a gamer, I don't care if they catch up or not. I would rather have companies worry about the sales. The only thing that matters is that there are some awesome games and features I am looking forward to. Hopeful to see a deal where if you buy Dark Souls 3 you will get the previous two games with Backwards Compatibility.

GameNameFame3595d ago

Long term? Look at their track record and studios.

Last gen, PS3 doubled number of exclusives in 80-100 metascore range. Yes. Doubled.

MS studio has not expanded at all. They barely replaced ones they lost. They lost Bungie and Epic. Last 343 game was first true Halo to be rated below 90. Black Tusk has all their games to date canned. Yes. All of them.

MS has purchased third party exclusives and timed exclusives.

If you follow what MS did last gen, those dry up after 1-2 years.

Remember the drought last gen?

jb2273595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

You really can't argue anything you mentioned there. As much as MS has worked to have more exclusives than they typically do, the same thing happened w/ the beginning of the 360 lifecycle, where a good handful of the best titles ended up on the ps3, and they seemed to dry up during the second half of the console's life after the lion's share of consoles were sold. I personally like Sony's tortoise approach to MS' hare, the ps3 undeniably had a larger catalog of compelling first party exclusives that would never be available on another platform, even if it was slower going in the beginning. As a gamer I'd rather have that potential reached on the back half where the console is being utilized to its fullest extent as opposed to a lot of middling to cool stuff released at the beginning when devs are still learning the consoles and the titles typically end up a little lesser in quality in the long run.

Barnaby-Jones3595d ago

This little fanboy war is of no importantance to me as it seems to be to you, judging by your history. Come at me without the obvious bias.

1. You act like MS can never improve their track record.

2. Last gen. Lets see what happens this gen before passing judgement.

3.What's the time limit on them having to replace studios? What if Halo 5 rates in the 90's? Black Tusk is now known as The Coalition and unless you are talking new ip, they are currently developing Gears 4.

4. I guess they are the only company that does this, right? As much as you supposedly hate this bad business practice, I don't see you voicing your disapproval towards other companies. One can only wonder why?

5. You are talking about last gen again. There is no concrete proof that the same thing will happen this gen in regards to the drought.

GameNameFame3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

@Barnaby Jones,

1. How are they going to improve their track record with same or less studios than they had last gen?

2. Uhh same point. I will sat it again.
"How are they going to improve their track record with same or less studios than they had last gen?"

3. if they do just as well as Bungie, then they will do just as well as last gen.

Which last we checked, still not good enough. Had literally half the exclusives at metascore of 80 to 100 bracket.

4.What other company had drought last gen? I am pointing out how nothing really changed from MS since last gen.

5. Uhh. Seriously? Do you like repeat same thing 3 times so it sounds like you have 5 points?

"How are they going to improve their track record with same or less studios than they had last gen?"

Azzanation3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

The problem with you GameNameFame and everyone who agrees with you is this. You believe once champions always champions. In your eyes you don't believe that there will be another Sport teams to win the championships, you only believe in the past. As Sports teams learn just like Corporations, they always learn to become better to achieve there goals.

Xbox isn't trying to outsell PS4 this generation, they are improving on there quality while besting the 360. That's there focus and goals. As long as there profiting they couldn't care less how well the PS4 sells.

Its a business and at this stage, Sony has done nothing to compete with the XB1's improvements apart from riding the wave of success from 2013s E3. Lets be honest here, the PS4 in 2013 and the PS4 in 2015 are the same, there has been very little improvements to the console while its competitor has allowed BC, Has a OS update in Windows 10, has open the door to PC/Xbox streaming, and has a interesting future with Cloud gaming. I haven't mentioned everything, just examples of where one console seems to have a fantastic future ahead of itself while the other is nothing more then the console you brought 2 years ago and nothing seems to be changing anytime soon in the next couple of years either.

Sony's biggest advantage they had over MS last generation was there variety of in house franchises which have been growing since the PS1 days. The problem with that logic this gen is MS has just as many great games to play and doesn't seem like there slowing down.

I wouldn't be using Metacritic as a example this generation. Most of PS4s franchises (Apart from there remasters) have all received averages reviews. If your putting games head to head then MS actually have that advantage.

I like Sony and PlayStation a lot, they really changed the industry with the PS1 and stopped Nintendo from having a monopoly however its fanboys like yourself that give this proud company a bad name.

For the record:
http://www.gamespot.com/for...

Sony have 14 in-house gaming studios
Microsoft have 19 in-house gaming studios
(21 if you include Mojang and Coalition)

From what I have heard lately (Rumour), MS sit on 22 and Sony at 12 as of today.

Why o why3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Lol@ azza

Output bro, creative freedom bro, consistency and variety bro.

No one group is above or worse than the other. Your comments looks just as fanboyish as the ones you chastise and accuse of being fanboyish. A simple notion was expressed, where is the improvement. Its not that idiotic or fanboyish to imagine ms being unable to improve unless they change their ways. I personally feel they will do this gen. They dont have half of the advantages they had at their disposal this gen as they did last gen. They are now the full underdogs and that might encourage them to be rid of their 'just enough', minimalistic ethos towards their customers.

Having more studios doesn't tell half of the story if the output doesnt match up.

Sony only had 1 generation more than ms yet the disparity in internal output is quite vast despite being the 'bankruptcy ridden' manufacturer.

Ms cant catch the ps4 this gen but they can build better for next gen. They've already improved on the hardware reliability but will they be cosistent for the whole gen and not just the early years with their internal output whilst incorporating more variety and taking more risks......time will tell so no judgements should be made quite yet.

BubbsyKong3595d ago

You can argue this a lot.. In the long term I see Sony pushing projectors trying to replace tv's well I see the xbone with 1. Cross play (pc to xbox online multiplayer) 2. The cloud, as its been shown in the latest trailer BLOWS AWAY what any system can do atm 3. backwards compatibility, say what you please but that is a AMAZING feature.. id give up 1080p for all of that and 1080p is all the ps4 has to offer.... I don't care aboot its x86 arch or its memory.. my pc has all that on crack :p the ps4 is a ps3 that runs 1080p more nativly with party chat and a few tweaks to its looks and layouts... you cant fight facts. Name something "NextGen" Sony has done with the ps4... I see xbox coming back just like last gen where Sony pushed to the top at the end. IMO thou I'm getting sick of having to repete myself once a week on here to Sony fanboys that are happy they got cod rights (that they made fun of xbox users for) IMO if u want a real next gen machine with next gen features get the xbox if you want 1080p on call of duty...... grab a ps4 you cant fight logic.

remixx1163595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Wow, now that you mention it, your kinda right.......ima go back and do some research but I think you nailed it in the way people are gonna hate you for it.

Uggh and the guy above me is kinda sad, but the guy above him makes some good points.

proudxgamer3595d ago

How in the heck did this get 25 agrees?

DUDE...how many new IPs are coming out with?
THEY OWN THE IPs!

It is 100% different this gen....PS may win ..okay... but stop with the X1 doesn't have the studios...U don't know crap ur talking about... Phil is changing things...did u see last this years e3 and GAmescom...things take time...SONY had 2 gens to put this into practice...

Haru3595d ago

@BubbsyKong

Oh you can see Sony trying to replace PS with tv (which is totally fake)

but you can't see Microsoft trying to get rid of xbox and replace it with windows?

You aren't too clever are you?

Also PS4 has more cool features like share play and other that xbox will never have

3595d ago
curtis923595d ago

Yes but that was mostly under Don Mattrick. Don't underestimate what can be done when a GAMER is at the helm. Phil Spencer is doing things.

Spid3r63591d ago

Exactly, and guess what Phils Spencer said about this time around. "So we're making a conscious decision to focus on our first-party games. It doesn't make it harder or easier, it's just a decision. I do think that building up first-party exclusives is creatively more difficult than signing a deal, just by the nature of what it is" So they are changing up their tactics while Sony is now focused more on the third party exclusives. Seems to me they have changed roles. And when you look at all the games so far you have to hand it to MS as far as games are concerned never mind all the features they have added to the box in just 2 years.

CalibriSerif3595d ago

the question now is can they maintain 1:2?

alabtrosMyster3595d ago

I don't know, I mean except the building destruction in the demo of crackdown 3 (this really is the ONLY impressive thing in this game) I have seen nothing but run of the mill titles (halo 5, TR:2015, another forza and Gears...Scalebound, the douche bag version of Panzer Dragoon?) they have shown nothing that made me say, hey this is really nice/impressive/imaginative/th e story seems interesting... nothing at all... yet somehow MS has the upper hand as far as PR goes :-/

Look at the conversation around Thomb Raider:2015, it's basically a cheap Uncharted knock off by now... people say "hey it looks good for a cross get title" and they want to believe so much that it's really up to par that some keep repeating it... yet the gameplay demos have enemies poping up all over the place, it's buggy as hell... it should be delayed until next christmass (that would not fix the bad acting and atrocious story line, but at least they could polish the game)... Halo 5 could be 343i's last chance? anyway, after what they have shown I don't expect this game to amaze too much...

We won't even talk about the other titles...

Basically, yes they have MORE, but what can we say about the apparant qualities of these games so far? more of the same... some empty far away promises about cloud computing (Crackdown 3 does not have a release date, they have a date for a public beta next summer, that's all)

MakinBaconXD3595d ago

If I had $100 for every cliché "I'm a gamer not a fanboy" or "I don't play consoles I play games" comment on this site,I think it is safe to say that I would be a millionaire right now. -___-

BubbsyKong3595d ago

I LOVE YOU!!!! A true "Gamer" shouldn't buy a console because its graphics, looks or size. A true gamer shouldn't care how many consoles sold over the other. A true gamer would realize when the industry is dying due to games like cod.. whats everyone fighting over this gen? 1080 fu*king P.... Now if that makes a game better feel free to tell me how because I cant tell between it or 720 really.. and as for fps a solid 35 is perfect. A real gamer wants a good story (the old halo's, Zelda, Mario, Banjo-kazooie) But it has to be fun. Somewhere games lost their fun and are now a competition of what looks better not what plays bettter. Like all my friends are like "OMG THE WITCHER LOOKS AMAZING" and proceed to tell me about its rendering and what not but they don't say 1 thing about a mission (other than guent) and I find that sad.. The new Star-Wars game wont have a story mode because "no one plays story modes apparently" WTF!!! but people complained about the xbox's always online... YOUR BUYING A ONLINE ONLY GAME!! Last gen was the last gen for me (other then Halo:Mcc) the xbox one has good features but no games I feel like getting, the ps4 has nice graphics but again no games I feel like playing. so I got myself a N64 and to me its winning the war :P RIP gaming and so called "gamer's" you never even got to experience what a real game feels like :( just the hate that you need to keep buying your console.

Can XO "catch up"? In what sense? Sales battle? That isn't my concern, that is MS & Sony's business. Both are doing well enough to stay afloat so there's nothing to worry about.

In the Games department, PS4 has some catching up to do -> In my opinion. Now, this is what concerns me, games.

jon_snow3596d ago (Edited 3596d ago )

Actually PS4 more than thrice exclusive than x1. So don't be delusional.

list of 2015 exclusive between both
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz...

and here is overall announced and released
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz...

fact says xbox 1 is the one which needs catching up.

Fro_xoxo3596d ago (Edited 3596d ago )

" So don't be delusional. "

Relax, take it easy. Maybe I should have been more specific.

For me, it's not a numbers game. Being exclusive doesn't automatically make it a quality(Good) game. So having more doesn't always mean better.

so far, I'm only interested in Bloodborne on PS4. Whereas on Xbox I've had more that I'm into.. Ori, Sunset OD, Halo Series..

I can only speak for myself. . I'm not stating a fact.

green3596d ago

Lists proove nothing. If all those games on the PS4s list interest you, then good for you. For some others, less than a handfull would be of interest to them and may prefer what the Xbox One offers. The Wii U has even less games but for some, what it offers is what they want.

Just do not understand why people can't understand the fact the some people have different tastes.

FlexLuger3596d ago

@jon_snow

Quality > quantity

So much shovelwear on that list...I dunno where to start...pure chess? that trivia game? I you really citing games like these to make your point? I guess your right though..who cares if its crap when you can have lots of it, right? I bought my PS4 for probably 20% of your list.

Cant say I have ever been a fan of JRPG or anime hack n slash or idol games. so for me thats half your list dead already. I had the displeasure of playing Jstars. Its one of the worst fighting games I have ever played. down right confusing in 2 player. And it plays like a PS2 game.

funnily the games I look forward to on PS4 are all western games similar to what I can get on xbox...shooters, open world RPGs, mature themed games, fighting games, sci fi games etc...

And I mean just look at your march 15...neverwinter and ori positively smoke anything on PS4. I bought my Xb1 that following month...funny that, eh? and look at your blank november and december slots? dont you find that a bit embarrasing given the point you just tried to make? Halo 5, forza 6 and TR are bigger than anything coming on PS4 in those months. This is just silly, now.

You cant even argue about variety when, the games that will sell PS4s this year are all third party shooters..sounds familiar dont it? Sony knows it too: starwars, destiny DLC and COD with timed DLC...sounds an awful lot like an xbox 360 fall line up.... from 2008...

OB1Biker3596d ago

@FlexLuger
I dont want to go into fanboy lists wars and all that crap but
'And I mean just look at your march 15...neverwinter and ori positively smoke anything on PS4.'

Seriously? (...)

Anyway its obviously all matter of taste regarding the games they like (what people here funnily call 'quality') and its no use trying to 'convince?' people of 'what?'

3596d ago
FlexLuger3596d ago

@OB1Biker

LOL, Really? so me stating my opinion is somehow trying to convince somebody of something(?) yet him drawing up lists is not...riiiiight. Lets be clear, id dint need to make as much effort as he did to go find that list. he probably keeps it in hgis favorite tabs just so he can copy and paste the link again and agian. like he has been doing. So who is really making the effort to try and convince people? Im not the one drawing up lists.

And FYI..common sense should dictate that I should not have to state that my opinion is MY OPINION, that I am stating. Are people really so dense on N4G that they need to reassured of this?

S2Killinit3596d ago

@jon_Snow
Thanks for sharing that link. Ever since listwar.com stopped operations, some biased people have been making baseless remarks about xbone having the advantage in exclusives which couldnt be further from the truth, and its a disservice to gamers. Your link should inform people better about whats available and where. Bubbles for you.

OB1Biker3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

@FlexLuger

My last sentence was intended as a general statement I thought it would be obvious
The main point I was referring was you stating 'march 15...neverwinter and ori positively smoke anything on PS4'
So you think these games 'positively smoke' BloodBorne, MLB15, Helldiver etc etc. Released that month. And was just asking 'seriously'?
Everyone is entitled to an opinion no worries.

Death3595d ago

@Jon,

The sheer quantity of releases on the PS4 are unparalleled on any console. You may also be interested in becoming a PC gamer if you are looking for quantity over quality. http://www.amazon.com/10-00...

Seriously though, the vast majority of titles PS4 has are indies that don't need the power of either console to run. I hate calling them shovelware because some really do shine, but not on the same level as a retail console release like we are used to. The best are ported straight from the PS3 like flower and flow. If you look at the new games that have been released that we haven't already played on the PS3, the list gets much smaller.

The irony of lists like this is when you look at the 100+ titles that will be available on Xbox One as b/c shortly will not count since they are free if you already have the disc. Nevermind you will also be able to purchase them digitally. Yet we see much of the PS3 library on the PS4 list that had to be repurchased and are now considered as fluff for the library.

FlexLuger3595d ago

@OB1Biker

"The main point I was referring was you stating 'march 15...neverwinter and ori positively smoke anything on PS4'
So you think these games 'positively smoke' BloodBorne, MLB15, Helldiver etc etc. And was just asking 'seriously'? "

Faid do. Hard to tell when somebody is being genuine or sarcastic around here sometimes.

so first and foremost before I answer. I should state that I DO own a PS4 and I DO own bloodborne. I get called out a lot on this stuff because I am so vocal. And I am ok with that:

http://s1370.photobucket.co...

Ok..so we have gotten that out of the way now. And I have my reasons for saying what I said. I never said BB was a bad game, simply that I think neverwinter is the better game for my money. and I have spent money on both. I bouht BB omn day of release completed it in early june. I paid nothing for neverwinter up front yet have ended up spending just over £80 on it and logged far more hourse on it than BB, which in its defense is not an MMO. But if we are talking sheer gamer enjoyment, then on those merits neverwinter clearly wins for me. I have spent more time on it and in the end spent more than what bb cost me. None of this is a slight at BB,simply that I was more entertained elsewhere. . Im clearly not the only one who enjoys the game. It has 2 million active players. thats more than most games sell.

"Everyone is entitled to an opinion no worries."

I agree. good day to you, sir.

OB1Biker3595d ago

@FlexlLuger
Ok cool. I'm guessing your use of 'smoke' was sort of passionate.
Good to know I may check it out when NeverWinter is released on PS4

Gazondaily3595d ago

You know nothing Jon Snow....

The Fro, fully agreed. The PS4 has been at the backfoot since launch when it comes to games. I want quality not quantity and there is no real comparison between the two. Next year will be a bitter fought battle mind you.

Ezz20133595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Microsoft can be in it for the long run as much as they want
they will never catch up to Ps4 in sales
They don't have the year headstart any more.

About games
most of Sony's 1st/2nd and 3rd Party studios have yet to show what they have for Ps4.
and they already have the highest rated games this gen out of the two systems.

@Septic

I sense a bit of hostility. Anyone can use the "my predilection" trump card.

I prefer Sony's output but I'm well aware that it would be an irrelevant subjective point to mention in a topic that pertains to global market share.

You mentioned your prefereance for quality over quantity. Here's a fact for you: compartively, PS4 has both to a greater amount of degree.

This is the part where our preferance comes into play.

And I agree, there's no real comparison. For me, PS4 by and large is the better machine for first, second and third party content.

Gazondaily3595d ago

I was just saying...let's talk sales.

Sureshot3595d ago

"The artcle talks about market share. Please don't beat around the bush with irrelevant subjective reasons."
Translation: we're not talking about how well supported the Xbox system is in terms of monthly updates, or the 130 confirmed BC titles, nor the fact that the Xbox one has MORE features than the Xbox 360 (unlike the ps4 which stripped down some of its features from the ps3 (you can't even have a damn custom Wallpaper), no chance Sony emulating Microsoft's cloud technology, Microsoft's superior GWG every month. Or the myriad of the other things that Sony is failing to provide its fans.
No we're talking about sales..

Genuine-User3595d ago

I'm not going to get into such drivel. Believe what you may.

Sureshot3595d ago

@genuine
Thanks for proving my point. Don't worry you don't have to list everything ps4 excels at. That list has only 2 things: slightly better resolutions on 3rd party games and... Oh wait it only has that one thing... You have the market share though!

MRMagoo1233595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

@sureshot

You do know besides the fact the ps4 has more sales, than the xbox one,it also has more games and the highest rated games on metacritic as well, the PS4 is winning in everything that matters for a games console.

You think guys like you would get a clue and see why its the fastest selling console this gen by a mile............i will give you a hint, its the games.

Sony has way more renowned 1st party developers than Microsoft. Proud Playstation owners knows that Sonys 1st party talent delivers unique and great game experiences. PS3 proved that It can stay afloat with their 1st Party talent alone.

Do Microsofts 1st party devs have the ability to create a NEW IP near the end of a console generation which then turns out to be GOTY like The Last of Us?

Do Microsofts 1st party devs have the ability to step away from their Norm and create a new IP something out of their comfort zone? Examples : Naughty Dog-TLOU, Guerilla Games- Horizon and many other 1st party devs rumored to make new ip.

Microsoft doesn't even have the original developers making Gears or Halo...

Sony's 1st party developers makes the PS4 a better investment in my opinion due to experience I had when PS3 was releasing quality exclusives left and right. To top it all off, Sony is making 3rd party deals left and right now with the PS4

Sony wants Quality AND Quantity. Just give their 1st Party Devs time.

You got downvotes by pathetic gamers for feeling hopeful about good games coming out next year. Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy? It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

NGL, next year might be one of the best years in gaming ... starting off with RE9 and GTA VI ...
and then all the good games that's been cooking
Pragmata, Sands of Time, Saros, Gears E-Day, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker,
Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra
current-gen only Infinity Ward's CoD, Duskbloods
+ My guess: Wolverine, Exodus, Mudang, Crimson Desert, Clockwork etc ...
~ seems like it might get too stacked

1Victor4d ago

@rokos:”Hopefully “
I downvoted you not for been hopeful but because I have seen the same “NEXT YEAR WILL BE SPECIAL “ comment for the last 10+ and hasn’t seen anything special from Microsoft.
I hope next year will be the one that everyone been waiting for since the last 3 years of the Xbox 360, it have to be after over $80 billions spent on acquisitions.

Lightning774d ago

So the new excuse is they don't count because it's from the ABK now huh. I guess all those 3rd party games count even less because they don't own them. According to your always crappy logic.

I don't know they have delivered this year and even last year. And they have a lot more content in the pipeline right now than anyone else. We can't just keep hating on MS

Indiana Jones
South of midnight
Avowed
Flight simulator
Hell Blade 2
Minecraft update
Gears of war reloaded
Indian Jones:expansion
Gears E day
Clockwork revolution
Fable
Doom the dark ages
The outer worlds 2
Grounded 2
Call of duty

OtterX4d ago

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer19924d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted4d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast4d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica4d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand1254d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer19924d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts4d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

They've had good output so far. So waiting for those games shouldn't be a problem.

Who cares if they're buy outs of companies or whatever excuse you want to make. They're games that are being distributed to other console. Play the games and enjoy it instead of fanboying or complaining.

ocelot074d ago

They going to be a he best and biggest publisher on Xbox, Playstation and PC next year. They not really said anything about Switch 2 though spite claiming to be big supporters.

Phil Spencer 'Very Excited' About Xbox Handheld Plans For 2025

With ASUS seemingly teasing an Xbox handheld last week, there's been a lot of talk about the device in the days ever since, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also teased something to do with handhelds happening in 2025

neutralgamer199270d ago

I really hope this isn't a windows based device even though coming from MS that's highly unlikely. SteamDeck is much much easier to use and offers a much better user experience than any other handheld device because it's all based on steam app. The Xbox handheld should be based on that because a Windows device with a 7-8 inch screen makes it's difficult to navigate

darthv7270d ago

Coming from Asus... its going to be an Xbox branded ROG Ally.

neutralgamer199270d ago

That's fine but hopefully it will be a Xbox app based instead of windows

VenomUK70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

When the casual market learn that there’s going to be an Xbox branded Asus handheld they will cancel their Nintendo Switch 2 preorders and get the Asus. No it won’t have exclusive games like Super Mario or Zelda or Metroid or Pilot Wings or Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or Donkey Kong or Pokémon or Super Smash Bros - but who cares as it will have access to the entire library of the Steam Store running on Windows. It will also have access to Game Pass with all the modern day classics like Avowed, Hellblade II and Grounded and Pentiment.

I think we all have to acknowledge that after all the criticism of Switch 2 on ResetEra it’s evidence that it will fail to sell and the Asus will outsell it. Dreamcast pushed Sega out of hardware, we all have to accept that the perfect storm of Switch 2 pricing, an Xbox-branded Asus and Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg’s persuasive promotion will likely kill off Switch 2 within a month. AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

FinalFantasyFanatic70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

@VenomUK,
I don't think that even has a remote chance of happening, Nintendo has so much brand loyalty, even with the backlash on their not so great pricing, I still think it's going to sell, Xbox doesn't have as much brand loyalty. Plus, if it's just Xbox branded ROG Ally or something similar, why not just choose a ROG ally or Steam Deck? They can both do everything that an Xbox branded handheld can. If Xbox is going to compete in the world of windows based handhelds, it has so much competition, it's going to struggle.

You're way too optimistic about the Xbox handheld and the demise of the Switch 2, I'm going to predict the opposite and say the Switch 2 will demolish the Xbox handheld in terms of sales/popularity.

S2Killinit70d ago

@VenomUK
Not sure if sarcasm or satire.

VenomUK69d ago

@S2Killinit Satire. I’m not going to hate on people for being excited for a new console. But what is happening in the Xbox community is something wicked, content creators are hyping up the Asus to their audience about how great this thing is, and how it will be more powerful than the Switch 2 and the Steam Store outweighs any advantage the Switch 2 has with its library of games. I don’t believe they believe it but they are grifting. By all means look forward to it but don’t sell it as a Switch 2 PS5 killer.

Steam Os is amazing. By far the best. Can’t imagine MS having an OS that can top it (CERTAINLY not windows)

crazyCoconuts70d ago

Well they're gonna try. They've already stated they've been working on it.

FinalFantasyFanatic70d ago

Windows as is, isn't a great experience for a handheld, they really need to make a dedicated handheld OS, unfortunately they've always been hellbent on making a single product for both PC/touch screen use.

I really can't imagine them making something that stands up to Steam OS, it just works so well.

RaidenBlack69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

This is not their in-house made Xbox handheld for next-gen, which is slated for release in 2027 alongside with the next Xbox console, which might run a version of their usual Xbox-ified OS optimized for the handheld.
This is just a brand collab to produce an Xbox branded updated Asus RoG Ally (Project Kennan), which as usual ships with Windows. Think of it as the 5th main competitor in handheld PC market, after Deck, Legion Go, Ally and MSi Claw (I know others exist, but these are the popular ones).
https://wccftech.com/xbox-h...
And RoG Ally didn't get an update this year like the Legion Go, so this Xbox-Asus one might be that?
Anyways, even with 2025 chip upgrade, the Legion Go underperforms compared to 2023 Ally and 2024 Ally X.

crazyCoconuts70d ago

It can't be anything but Windows if it has the Xbox brand on it. Outside of the politics (which would be a showstopper), SteamOS/Linux can't run GamePass natively due to the crazy protections implemented by the Windows Store.

neutralgamer199270d ago

I am not asking the Xbox handheld to run steam, I just wanted a dedicated Xbox app on the handheld that handles everything from playing games, downloading games, gamepass and most importantly all updates are done from that app. Just a better overall user experience

Having to download multiple different things on a Windows based device becomes really a chore in a smaller screen.

crazyCoconuts70d ago

Having the windows handheld auto launch the existing Xbox Windows app will accomplish everything you mentioned, and I'm sure that's what this will be.
Fact is that MS will need to add a lot into that app to incorporate all the system level controls Steam incorporated into their handheld UI.

OmegaSoldati70d ago

Steam Deck for the win! Switch too.

Profchaos70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

It'll be windows all leaks indicate this is a windows based device with a Xbox skin it will integrate other storefronts because at its core it's windows.

@venom there's is no chance that parents will be buying their kids a rog ally setting up steam and other storefronts over a Nintendo switch 2 at Christmas.

That's a mass amount of hopium there.

Portable PC's in total have barely cracked six million sold the switch 2 will continue to dominate the casual crowd all known about it and news of a switch successor has already started spreading in mainstream media

neutralgamer199269d ago

I think switch 2 will do well but dominate I think we need to wait and see. The prices of the console and games is much more than switch so don't expect parents in this inflation time to spend $600 on 2 games and a console. Since it's Nintendo it should sell but I think we are underpaying the importance of the inflated market

anast70d ago

Every inch of this things is going to be a subservice.

Aloymetal70d ago

And an even bigger flop in the making, it's like they're just throwing crap at the wall and see what sticks or rather find another ''clever'' way to keep squeezing more money from the already miniscule and gullible fanbase. Smfh.

Reaper22_70d ago

Squeezing money. Isn't that what sony is doing with tbe ps5pro. And what about all those remakes and locking some ps4 games to a subscription.

ABizzel169d ago

At first I thought this was a huge mistake on MS part. But after thinking about this more and more, while I still don’t think it’s going to do anything beyond 10 - 20 million in sales, I think that’s exactly what MS and ASUS are expecting and both are okay with.

I assume this is more of Asus saying to MS, look we have ten/twenty million of these handheld PCs already in production and we’ve only been able to sell a couple millions, partner with us and let’s brand them as Xbox handhelds ASUS will do all the heavy lifting so we don’t take a loss on all these, and all MS has to do is market the platform and put your logo, the new Xbox OS/app you’ve been working on, and together we’ll helps each other out and push more GamePass subscriptions.

That make complete logical sense as to why this came about, because otherwise….. So technically it would be a win:win for both companies, or a win for MS and a reduction of loss of ASUS, even if they only sell 10m - 20m units.

As for the handheld itself honestly, it should be solid and most likely based on the Rog Ally 7, but hopefully with the Rog Ally X case as that has a much better port and I/O layout. Plus if the Xbox OS is wayyyyyyy lighter than Windows then it should be a a good piece of tech getting more performance than the Ally 7 Windows version for around $499.

But that’s where the next problem comes into play…..Price. It’s Switch 2 all over again. The slight different is outside of the potential of DLSS, this should be a slightly more powerful handheld, especially if they create their own dock, but that dock will likely be sold separately meaning now we’re looking at $550 or more, for what will essentially be a docked Xbox Series S and a slightly more powerful SteamDeck / Switch 2 in handheld mode.

peppeaccardo70d ago

The Irrelevant-Held will be able to connect to the XFLOP Series X

anast70d ago

ha! It might last longer than the Stadia.

Profchaos70d ago

Basically what windows os turning into now every few weeks logging on I'm greeted with a hey how about some office 365 or your gamepass lapsed how about renewing and decline is in little blue writing while subscribe is a huge button

anast69d ago

This and I also get a pop up to subscribe to Xbox GamePass.

PanicMechanic70d ago

So smart of you caveman Phil sphincter. Did you get the memo on what Nintendo is releasing this year?

Kyizen70d ago

I dont trust Microsoft to build an OS for this looking at the Windows phone so I think this will be just Windows with a Steam like Big Picture mode locked in the UI to launch games.

Rockstar70d ago

This is good advice from Reaper here. I trust your advice and you've got my word...I wont buy it.

Thanks Reaper!

YourMommySpoils70d ago

Then don't complain about facts.

PanicMechanic69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

So in other words, it’s just another ROG Ally. I think MS has a winner🤣🤣

FinalFantasyFanatic70d ago

I remember when my sister bought a Windows phone, that thing was missing so many basic features, she didn't even own the phone for 3 months before getting frustrated and swapping it out.

Profchaos70d ago

I'll be honest I had a older relative that loved the windows phone cause it had a huge dial, contacts and camera button that was all it got used for.

Oh and it was bright green so easy to find

Moral of the story one person's trash is another's treasure

Reaper22_69d ago

Windows phones weren't the best but I also remember sonys phones didn't fare too well either. As a matter of fact they're newest ones aren't doing so great either. Not even in Japan. That says alot.

Profchaos69d ago

@reaper22 honestly Shane about the Sony phones to I brought the Xperia 3 when they announced remote play for it and it was one of the best ones I have had the battery lasted a few days the camera was some obscene 50mp but the physical design lagged behind Samsung and I think that was a huge reason it failed

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Reassures Xbox Gamers Their Gaming Library Isn't Going Anywhere

Xbox's CEO Phil Spencer assures that, even though they are expanding to other platforms, Xbox gamer's libraries aren't going anywhere.

jznrpg119d ago

Phil, the words of a guy who only speaks the truth.

If I was an Xbox owner I wouldn’t feel comfortable with what he just said

crazyCoconuts119d ago

Reading his quote sounds like word salad. I'm not sure he said anything really.

darthv72119d ago

I'd rather him say more of our library will be made available now. It sucks to have so many 360 era games still stuck in limbo, especially Activision ones now that they are buddy buddy.

VenomUK119d ago (Edited 119d ago )

Sarah Bond had committed to backwards compatibility, so interpreting Phil Spencer’s quote, old Xbox games will always be playable with a PS3 on PSN like cloud solution, and on new hardware if a new Xbox console is ever released.

Scissorman119d ago (Edited 119d ago )

why does this even need to be reassured? it really goes to show you how nervous there fanbase is.

Eonjay119d ago

Right. I was thinking the same thing. This shouldn't be some sort of 'benefit' for Xbox gamers as MS goes to Sony and Nintendo... This should just be implied. No matter where the games go in the future should have any impact on the purchased games libraries of current Xbox consumers.

pwnmaster3000119d ago

Yup no matter how much they say they don’t care, the fanbase care lol

Profchaos119d ago (Edited 119d ago )

What's left of them one the last 12 months I've seen Xbox consoles flooding second hand marketplaces and going for half of their RRP

In addition this interview the whole panel was clearly not believing the viewpoint but not wanting to offend their guest

LabRat118d ago

When (or "if") Xbox goes out of hardware those who don't play on Cloud or prefer hardware...where will they play their library?

PhillyDonJawn118d ago

Not the question. If you already gave the hardware and games. Why would it disappear?

Chocoburger119d ago

Ah yes, Phillip, the pinnacle of honesty, and he never changes his mind. We can all take his word for it without hesitation. 🤥

Profchaos119d ago

He did but in the follow up sentence he talked about charging pricing because they are a business so who knows maybe the next gen box has a fee to use their emulator service I imagine wine ports to a PC architecture
