They're up YoY and will have the marketing for COD and AC (swung from Xbox last year in DLC and marketing). They also have several solid exclusives such as Until Dawn, Tearaway, Uncharted Collection, and several downloadable titles. Not to mention much stronger Japan lineup this year and this Fall to boost what is now their weakest major market (only because of overall console decline there). They'll most definitely get another 10m consoles out when you consider that even if they don't do a price cut they'll have cheaper bundles this year.

You are altering the numbers to support your opinions instead of forming your opinions around the numbers. Sony sold half as many PS3's as they did PS2's. I'm not sure how that is consistent. Losing half of your sales and even more in market share is almost hard to do if your name isn't Nintendo. Sony changed the way they do business with the PS4 relying more on third party content, charging to play online and focusing on subscription services like PSNow and PSVue.

I don't think that "losing half" is a correct statement even at this time and age but the PS3 has a few years on the shelves still. I just bought one for my son for cristmas and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. The thing is still selling pretty well afaik so the gap is shrinking. Someone could provide a link to sales right about now.

Also about the market share I fail to see how Sony is losing anything by the time there comes a gen along where people find more than one console desireable. They all win don't they?

Add them up, Sony's PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 combined is more then all of Nintendo's consoles and MS consoles...COMBINED in sales.

Considering the gamble that they made on the Cell processor nearly destroyed the Playstation brand, I'd have to say that they still did remarkably well and came back to outsell their competition after launching a year late.

(And before anyone says what about the Wii, if you look at the Venn diagram of Wii owners to other console owners, you're going to see that the Wii was an inexpensive and innovative console that had Nintendo's catalog of unique IPs. It was an easy choice for a second console, and really *had* no competition in the market. If you haven't heard of the "Blue Ocean" strategy, it's a fascinating concept. Look it up!)

Go ahead and compare any other console to that PS2 Lifetime Sales yardstick and you're going to see that nothing measures up. Very few consoles have even made half as many sales. Not even the original NES, and those things were goddamn everywhere. Hardly a fair comparison.

It's true. A man would maybe interested in PC or WiiU (sold his after E3) but there isn't even time anymore. All these PS+ games, first party titles all year, third party stuff all year, and a nice focus on a man's favorite modes (SP and co-op) have filled as much gaming time as a man can take this gen (just now catching up on a backlog but still have to get GTA5 and Witcher 3 and THEN Until Dawn is right around the corner!)

Well this is the week we find out if North America will get the MGS 5 PS4 bundle or not. If we don't hear anything at Gamescom then it ain't coming here. Which is a shame. Its the best looking PS4 so far and an awesome special edition bundle is the only thing stopping me from getting a PS4. Yea I know there are the Batman and Destiny bundles but I don't want yet another black or white console. I collect these consoles so might as well wait for an amazing looking one in a color that's not black, white or gray.

Just to vouch for the Batman PS4 it looks awesome & even better in person, the gunmetal silver is a really nice touch! I agree though with the MGS bundle. The red PS4 looks amazing & would sell a TON of PS4's!! It'd be a money maker & SONY would be foolish to not try to do anything to try & bring here to NA!

Sony got humbled by the fiasco that was the PS3 launch and this time listened to feedback and did everything right. Powerful hardware, easy to program, and a low price. Unless you are a diehard fan of Nintendo and MS franchises there's really no reason not to make the PS4 the console of choice.

When I say "console of choice" I think it's pretty self explanatory that it excludes handhelds and pc... As for the exclusive thing... Most games come out for PS4 and Xbox One and in general run better on the PS4. So if you exclude the exclusives and just go by multiplats, there's no reason to get an Xbox over a PS4. It's cheaper and it runs better. Nintendo overall isn't even part of that equation. So unless you MUST have Halo, Forza, Gears or say Mario, Zelda, Smash, the obvious choice is a PS4.

What country are you in that the PS4 is cheaper than an Xbox One? The Xbox One has been cheaper for quite some time and if you are an online gamer, Live is still the better online service. With the Xbox app on Windows 10 you are always connected with your friends even when you aren't on your console. The universal apps are nice too. As for multiplats running better on PS4, I have both my consoles connected to the same HDTV. The difference is only detectible if someone with the right equipment points it out.

I don't agree with there being an obvious choice and I won't discount Nintendo as being a viable option either. A PS4 is an obvious choice for Playstation fans. The rest of the world has some pretty good options but very well could end up with a PS4. To say it's obvious is extremely narrow minded though.

Sony hit 7.9 million Plus subscribers at the end of October 2014. This included PS3 subscribers. http://www.gamespot.com/art... According to the statement, 6.5 million of those are PS4 owners. This means a little over 1 million of the 80 million PS3 owners thought Plus was worth paying for. I don't think people chose to pay, it became mandatory with the PS4. By the way, the "vast majority" of console gamers don't exist on the PS4. There are still connected Xbox 360's, Wii's and WiiU's in the wild along with the Xbox One. The "vast majority" of PS4 players don't even pay for the service. It was half of them in 2014.

In North America where I live, Xbox One is not a distant second. The two consoles are relatively close together in sales.

@Death here in the UK the XB1 and PS4 are the same price. The RRP for the PS4 is £349.99 and the Xbox One is £299. But most stores and online retailers sell the PS4 at £299 the same price as the Xbox.

Also when they make bundles the PS4 bundles seem to the be most value for money. For example Gamestop the other week gave away a PS TV with any PS4 console purchase. So if you bought the £299 Witcher 3 and Bloodborne bundle you also got a PS TV console for free. Where the best Xbox bundle for the same price was Witcher 3 and Forza Horizon 2.

PC's are indeed like consoles today. You may not have yours hooked up to your HDTV, but there is a reason GPU's have HDMI outputs. When consoles run Windows and feature x86 CPU's they are more like PC's than they are traditional consoles. Not to mention installing games to the HDD isn't very console like either. Todays PC's and consoles are extremely similar to one another in both hardware design and game development.

I wish Microsoft hadn't caved in to ignorance and flipped the unflippable switch too. I would liked to have ripped my games to the HDD and not needed disc based DRM to prove ownership. My consoles are connected 24/7 anyway. It would be nice to have access to all of my retail bought games as well as my digital purchases remotely. It's too bad Microsoft listened to people like you instead of the ones that could afford the more expensive console at launch. With the launch of Windows 10 we are getting a better glimpse at what Microsoft was unable to convey to us at the announcement. It's too bad we won't be able to benefit from what they originally wanted to do. The only thing they needed was a solution for those that didn't want to go online.

The PS1 and PS2 were well over 100 million with the PS2 hitting 150 million. Your assumption didn't work with the PS3 since we only seen half of the PS2 owners make the jump.

Two years in we haven't seen the same amount of first party support we have seen in the past from Sony. According to Sony themselves they see subscription services as the way to make a profit with the PS4. Never before have we seen this from them. They are set to release a separate platform with Morpheus next year too. How they will support both is yet to be seen. We seen how they didn't support Vita or Move, so they don't exactly have a great track record as far as supporting more than one platform goes.

So many more timed/PS/console exclusives than xbone, the breadth of games and choice on PlayStation has surely helped push PS4 to a lead that doubles it's closest competitor in sales. With 2016 and 2017 packed with exclusive heavy hitters PlayStation is indeed entering a 2nd golden age. When u inject Morpheus VR into the equation along with Vita, remote play, shareplay, ps now, ps vue, cross-play/cross buy u have an extremely powerful and diverse PlayStation ecosystem. When u become enveloped in the PlayStation universe and are able to take advantage of all these wonderful things it's truly incredible.

The PS4 is just a reminder of how dominant Sony can be in the industry when they get their act together. This is why people have such expectations of the PS brand.

On a side note, it's funny to think that Microsoft's "Golden Age" is only selling on par with Sony's alleged "Dark Age." When PS3 sells 13 million in 1.5 years, people chant doom and gloom. When X1 sells 13 million in 1.5 years, people praise it. Just goes to show how high people's expectations are for each brand respectively.

Whenever a console sells 25 million units it necessarily means just ONE thing -

25 million people out of 7 billion in the world bought the console. Approx 1 out of every 280 people.

It doesn't gauge how often people play on it, how many games they buy, how much profit is made, how often its games are commented on, how clever or nice its gamers are.
And, as the Wii to WiiU tends to show, it doesn't gauge how many of those will necessarily buy your next console.

The PS2 was no particular powerhouse compared to the Xbox, although like all Playstations it did have tricks up its sleeve, and people can go on about how it had so many games but at the end of the day, I preferred to have the Xbox and Gamecube combination in my house. I could then play some of the best Sega and Capcom games first, amongst others, before PS2 got them, amongst exclusives like Rogue Squadron 2 and Luigis Mansion.

The Wii had Super Mario Galaxy but, apart from that, the Xbox360 and PS3 had little to be jealous of gameswise and certainly not power wise. Yet the Wii sold more than either of them.

The Dreamcast is adored by many gamers for its innovations but only sold 10 million, although it did only have 18 months on the market in full.

Whatever its advantages (and they are there, especially in tech), the PS4 told a story that more people were in the mood to hear, partly because Playstation is a name that they are already primed to take notice of even if they didn't buy a PS3.

There were blunders from Microsoft (some greedy ones too from them) and Nintendo (the WiiU is too highly priced for its tech compared to the competition, if buyers don't value the controller so highly in the price).
But, at the end of the day. the Playstation name had a latent power, plus one that continued to be appreciated by PS3 owners.

It's a combination of fortune favouring the pretty good due to complex emotional reasons that gaming generates, fortune favouring what people are comfortable with and people buying what they think doesn't cost too much for what they need. And if they caught the stats that the PS4 is technically up to 50% more powerful than the Xbox One (debated by some) and that they could get popular third party series at the same time then that might have caught their interest. It's been shown early on that there are loads of games either out or coming out for the PS4.

Plus, maybe (just maybe), there are lots of clued up gamers in those 25 million who know how Sony were generous with online gaming last gen and with releasing exclusives the full course of the lifespan. Maybe the gamers really did win it for Sony, rather than just the new casuals.

Total domination by Sony...so glad I have a PS4 and it has made me very happy this gen. Amazing what PS4 is doing in sales and this is what Sony needed. The PS brand is stronger than ever and that is very good indeed.

Ppl need to understand that this is the beginning, PS4 has a list of gigantic exclusives that are yet to release, it hasn't had 1 single price cut, it has 1gb of flexible memory that has yet to be utilized, and it's launching VR early next year. This PS4 explosion could turn into a mushroom cloud of marketshare dominance, 100 million units is looking like a gimme at this point.

Ppl respond to quality hardware and incredible software, Sony seems to give ppl more creativity and more choice.
