Review of HORI’s Fighting Commander 4 Controller for PS4/PS3 | The Outerhaven

Keith writes: If you’re like me, you like to dabble with fighting games but you’re still a casual player. That meaning you can’t justify the reason to pick up an expensive fight stick for the PlayStation 4, not that fight sticks are bad, because some of them are flat out sexy, but you’re not that deeply involved to simply get one. Enter the Hori FC4, which could be exactly what the doctor ordered.

The first few things that you’ll notice is that the controller features 6 front facing buttons; Square, Triangle, Circe, X , R1 and R2. It still retains the top trigger buttons as well for the L1, L2, L3 and R3 buttons, which is pretty especially if you want to map special moves to the trigger buttons. As you would imagine, this was created and marketed for the fighting game crowd, so this is a huge feature. And if you need even more buttons, if that was possible, you can use the toggle switch on the top of the FC4 to change the L1 / L2 to L3 and R3 buttons, respectfully.

I just ordered this controller from Amazon because the analog sticks on the DS4 get in the way while I'm playing Ultra Street Fighter 4. So many combos and special moves because of it. Don't get me wrong, the DS4 is a great controller, but for me, it's configuration isn't really optimized for games requiring complicated inputs to activate special moves.

To be honest I've heard nothing good from Fighting game Pro's about DS4. It's less durable than Ds3 and the D-pad just isn't as good. Sticky Triggers are pain of MK10 community from what I hear and I've already broken one D-pad while testing out the thing for GG.

In Guilty gear half of the time I drop inputs that I do perfectly fine with Ds3. The game is very strict with inputs compared to MK10 which is generally more forgiving. Sliding inputs on the thin is just generally a lot less comfortable than it's with Ds2, Ds3 or Vita.

I don't have a problem with the DS4's D-pad, it's just that the way the triggers are set up and the left analog stick being directly under the d-pad, they're in the way and cause me to miss executing combos and special moves. It gets really annoying especially when I'm using Akuma, Ryu, Ken, Sagat, Oni, Chun Li and Guile in USF4. In critical moments when trying to trap my opponents in the corner using various combos that involve special moves, either the left analog stick is in the way or I accidentally hit the R2 trigger.

Oddly enough I've never had this problem with Ds3 and the analog stick on it is fairly close to the DPad.

But fighting games could really use the disable touch pad and analog sticks option because those tend to be just on the way for most of the time.

Haven't played SF much but if I remember correctly it had fairly forgiving inputs but the combo links were pretty tough compared to the other games I've played.

Great if you're dedicated to the Fighting Genre, but I personally find this unnecessary. 3/5 from this particular reviewer is not bad though.

I agree ThatPSGuy it felt as if they were trying to make more than just a fight game pad, but they should of stuck to just that. Too much going on for this controller. Thanks for checking out the post.
