Square Enix doesn’t have much to say about possible Dragon Quest XI localization

Square Enix finally announced Dragon Quest XI earlier today. That was most definitely good news, but fans want to know if the company has any plans to bring the game west.

Unfortunately, Square Enix doesn’t have much to say on that front at the moment. The publisher provided Eurogamer with the following statement:

“We don’t have a concrete plan at the moment. However, we will consider it as we’ve done in the past for other Dragon Quest titles. We don’t have further information to share at the moment.”

Dragon Quest XI seems to be heading to Japan next year. If the RPG were to come west, it probably wouldn’t come out until 2017.

That would seriously suck if they didn't localize the game for the west. I doubt it though, I mean Star Ocean 2...and not Dragon Quest? Would make zero sense.

Abash3610d ago

I'm pretty sure they are making the game for PS4 because they intend to localize it...

AndrewLB3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

There are lots of Japanese games that never get western localizations unfortunately, so don't be surprised if Dragon Quest XI is one of them. These games have a small audience outside Japan for various reasons, many developers cite the idea that we are an FPS culture, yet I firmly believe it's because the games just aren't available to us therefore they lack popularity. All one has to do is look at the huge sales numbers Xseed has had in recent years for localized versions of 10 year old games that most people thought would not sell 1/10 that amount.

I personally want every one of these games localized but I wont be holding my breath. While some japanese developers have taken notice of recent JRPG successes in the western world, many of them still pay little attention to markets outside japan.

@Kingdomtriggers

The issue here is cost. JRPG's have been notoriously poor sellers in western countries over the years and the amount of time and money involved in translating games with massive amounts of dialogue, and in recent years adding voice actors... it becomes quite a risky proposition.

A recent example I recall was when Xseed localized the PSP version of Trails in the Sky 4 years ago. It was a massive undertaking due to the game having just over a million Japanese characters, and it almost bankrupt them. Luckily they took a calculated risk last year and released the original PC version in English and within a month outsold the prior 4 years of PSP sales combined. The only reason why Second Chapter is coming to the west is because of the PC version doing so well.

Relientk773610d ago

I'm not worried. It'll come to the West, and I'm getting it when it does.

MrSwankSinatra3610d ago

Hopefully they localize both versions, I have to admit the 3DS looked really cool with having a 3D and 2D perspective.

-Foxtrot3610d ago

Typical Square....they never learn

Xavior_Reigns3610d ago

Come on now, they're getting better, even if it's annoying slow.

-Foxtrot3610d ago

You know that song "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back"....yeah well that's them in a nutshell.

kingdomtriggers3610d ago

Way to assume that it isn't coming to the West. Stop being so melodramatic.

-Foxtrot3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

I never assumed anything. it's just they never learn meaning this shouldn't be a decision you need to think out

Well done for twisting a comment into something it's not

_-EDMIX-_3610d ago

Typical Fox.....never reads.

Did you read what they stated?

"However, we will consider it as we’ve done in the past for other Dragon Quest titles"

Sooooooo 9 out of 10 DQ main titles came to the west, DQ X didn't come based on clearly the Wii and Wii U's not so great networking, it may have not been a smash hit due to that alone, I see DQ XI coming to the west.

-Foxtrot3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

Look what I've just posted above

"I never assumed anything. it's just they never learn meaning this shouldn't be a decision you need to think out

Well done for twisting a comment into something it's not"

Do you guys see something completely different when you see my comment.

Maybe you should read what I've wrote more carefully.

styferion3610d ago

this is square not sega, it'll come to the west

If Square Enix wants its beloved Dragon Quest series to be even bigger than it already is, they need to localize more of its games like it does with Final Fantasy.

KimikoGaming3610d ago

This will come west. It is a main series Dragon Quest game that isn't an MMO or a remake. It will happen.

I am worried about DQVII3D, DQVIII3D, DQM3D, DQM23D, and DQMJ3. Not worried about XI.

Nicely done. My favorite entry next to 8/9.

Zeldafan6417d ago

My second favorite after 3 and just ahead of 8.

FullmetalRoyale17d ago

When I played this game I was in disbelief that I had somehow not played this franchise. I absolutely adored this game, and have since played two other entries. Been saving the two on 3ds. Next entry is easily a day one purchase.

Michiel198917d ago

I had the same man, the goofy aesthetics always kinda prevented me from trying it, but boy was I wrong.

andy8517d ago

Keep 12 turn based for christ sake

andy8516d ago

Me too after the comments a few years ago. Hopefully the success of recent ones changed their idiotic thinking

Melankolis17d ago

Good. Prefer 4-7 with DS & PS1 graphic though, modest yet stimulating imagination.

Miraak82 17d ago

Only DQ game i've ever played and one of the best games I've ever played , such a great experience . I wonder if the original ps4 release was included in these sales

RedDevils17d ago

Go play 8 if you like this one.

Miraak82 16d ago

i actually bought DQ8 on ps2 back in the day but mainly for the FF12 demo disc lol . I tried it but there were sooo many rpgs to play at the time that I think I played it for for a little bit before trading it in , maybe if they come out with a remaster/remake I'll try it out again

Wait, no new PS1, PS2 or PSP additions?

CrimsonWing69977d ago

It’s frustrating how they barely update that library. I get that Jimbo hates old games, but c’mon, the classic catalogue with trophies was a big draw for me. Was really hoping to get some heavy duty classic PS1 games to platinum. Looks like they’ll do exactly what they did on PS4 with the PS2 library…

LucasRuinedChildhood977d ago (Edited 977d ago )

Games like Resistance: Retribution have already been rated as well so they have some stuff ready.

I think they still don't have a healthy supply of classic games for the next few months and they have to really spread them out ... so because of all those Yakuza remasters on Premium this month ... they made the decision to hold off putting up more PSP or PS1 games until next month. :(

They need clearer communication on this. They could have said that we can look forward to some PSP games next month or something.

FinalFantasyFanatic977d ago

I'm so glad I stuck with the essential tier, I'd be ticked paying more with the expectation that the classic catalogue would be regularly updated and built up. The classic catalogue was the biggest draw of the upper tiers for me, so not seeing any new PS1 games is pretty disappointing.

Ben Dover977d ago

While the VC remake is a turd, this is an impressive month.

SlothLordPootus977d ago

Has vice city been fixed? If not it feels like a weird addition. Lots for Dragon Quests fans.

jeromeface977d ago

fixed? Its kinda hard to fix something that was a mobile port to begin with... so no

cluclap977d ago

It wasn't a mobile port though? The team that made them did the mobile games but if I remember the actual remakes aren't the mobile versions.

andy85977d ago

Playing it at the moment. It actually looks pretty clean. I'm on PS5 though, can't comment for other versions. I guess the updates helped a bit

VersusDMC977d ago

If you like assassins creed and Dragon Quest enjoy the multiple games.

Just plan on playing Medium and the Yakuza remasters right now.

EvertonFC977d ago

"inside" indie game looks interesting for sure too

SlothLordPootus977d ago

Inside is great. If youve played limbo it's very similar

dazzysima977d ago

Seems the PS Plus offer is running out of steam already.

Have they even added any new trials since launch?

rob-GP977d ago

Yes, loads - they just stupidly havn't updated the list on the console!

I can't recall of the top of my head but there's been a bunch of games, probably about 10 or so. I'm gonna drop Shu another email and try and get him to tell the UX team to update the list. It's annoying when they don't update things

VersusDMC977d ago

I checked out the soulstice trial recently. And i heard they added dying light 2 so i might check that one out as well.

MrNinosan977d ago

Running out of steam? This month is amazing, and the months before it has been great aswell.
At least 3 of the Dragon Quest games are great, Medium is okay, Assassins Creed is nice gems for those who missed put, Inside amazing, Castlevania superb, the Yakuza remakes are fantastic.

Lots of Trials has been added simce launch.
If you don't use the service or are interested enough to first check what's there, why comment?

Lightning Mr Bubbles995d ago

Me being a Playstation guy and a huge JRPG fan, I can say that the only franchises I actually miss that are on Switch are The Fire Emblem series and The Xenoblade Chronicles series. I've played neither but I've heard good things. I've seen people play Xenoblade Chronicles games on youtube, and it seems like they think it's a big deal so I'm curious.

Rebel_Scum995d ago

As someone who doesnt like jrpg’s that much these days I went into Xenoblade Chronicles blind and had a blast. Reminded me of that golden age of 16-bit and 32-bit jrpgs. If thats the era you liked then it should hit the spot.

jznrpg995d ago

I only have a Switch for the games that don’t come on PlayStation . There aren’t a ton but there are some good ones.

repsahj995d ago (Edited 995d ago )

I agree with top 1, for me xenoblade chronicles 3(and 2) is one of the greatest jrpg to date. It's like the feeling of playing ff7 on ps1 for the first time again. Imagine if XC3 was done with ps5 graphics, that will be magical. I might get the xc remaster before the year ends or after I got the platinum trophy of GoW ragnarok.

jznrpg995d ago

I didn’t care for 2 as much . It’s good but 3 is sooo much better than so is the first one imo .

repsahj995d ago

yeah I agree, but much better than any recent jrpg releases.
