AS author said it's not needed for gaming - but give it a few years. What about VR? Will that eventually require "blistering fast" RAM?
I dont think VR will be an issue at all, in games that is. The requirements to run a VR headset, like the Rift, only needs 8gb of RAM just like new AAA titles coming out, and does not even specifies that it needs DDR4 RAM, stock DDR3 at 1333 MHz is fine.
Workstation applications in VR or Hololens type tech yeh.
People say that the DDR5 Ram in the PS4 is amazing, so I can't see why DDR4 Ram isn't a welcome addition to a PC. Faster memory is never a bad thing.
Replies(1)There are a lot of factors involved in choosing memory.
The single biggest advantage of DDR4 over DDR3 (not including bandwidth of course) is heat. All the low latency DDR3 RAM is running at high voltages (1.6-1.65V) to acheive that speed which is like putting a heater next to your processor. Not very good for overclocking. DDR4 RAM runs in 1.2-1.35V range depending on it's speed.
As a personal example, I am using Geil DDR4-3000 RAM with a tCL of 13 cycles and it has a slight overclock to 3200MHz at 1.2V. this gives me a latency of 4ns (4.06ns to be exact).
The very fastest (that I am aware of) DDR3 kit like the Corsair Platinum DDR3-2133 with a tCL of 8 cycles has a latency of 3.75ns and runs at 1.65V which is way to high of a voltage to even consider an overclock and will put out enough heat that it will hamper your ability to overclock your processor. Oh, and it's almost 3 times more expensive too.
Whoops, messed up my latency calculation, forgot to multiply by 2 due to the double data rate base clock being half... should have been 8.12ns and 7.50ns
Choosing DDR4 RAM isn’t a decision made in a vacuum for the purpose of “bragging rights”, it is part of your platform decision, if you want a skylake processor, you are going to use DDR4 RAM because that is the RAM that is used on the skylake platform. I am happy to say that I didn’t sacrifice latency because I chose skylake/DDR4 and I gained bandwidth which may not have much of an impact but it does in fact help in a few games and applications and will likely help more and more as time goes on and with a bit of shopping around and patience, it was relatively inconsequential to the cost of my build, about an extra 25 bucks relative to DDR3.
I chose to go with an i5-6600k skylake processor for a number of reasons, overclockability being one of them since I am, after all, a PC enthusiast that enjoys the technical merits of building a PC. The I5-6600k is a 14nm processor with a low TDP that is an overclocking champ, I am running it at 4.8Ghz (from 3.5Ghz stock speed) and one of the reasons I am able to get that high is because the four sticks of DDR4 RAM sitting two inches from my processor and in front of the intake of my crossdraft cooler is running at a cooler 1.2V instead of a hotter 1.65V. The RAM is also very close to the voltage regulator and on the down draft side of my cooler is my memory controller. The stability of all of these things, including the RAM itself, are affected by heat.
But heat isn't just the enemy of overclockers, it's also the enemy of silence. The fans inside my case rarely exceed 800rpm and when I am doing simple things like surfing the net, email or whatever some fans simply turn off and others drop down to 500-600 rpm so my case is essentially silent.
Another reason I chose skylake, and DDR4 by extension, is the upgrade path. Socket 1150 is at the end of it’s life and 1151 is just out of the gates. When I am ready to upgrade, that will likely entail a new CPU and GPU and that is it. Maybe a larger M.2 SSD somewhere along the line (another reason I chose skylake) but I can say that I will be perfectly happy with my RAM.
