Batman: Arkham Knight Review – Arkham Trite | The Jimquisition

Batman: Arkham Knight is a letdown on several fronts. While it sports some terrific highlights, the majority of the campaign is trite, while anything ancillary to that is downright vapid. The overbearing emphasis on the shoddy Batmobile is distasteful (how on Earth did Batman even cope without it before, since it’s crucial to literally everything here?), and the stimulation of “being the bat” just doesn’t have the same jolt it used to.

The frankly embarrassing state of the PC version pushes things over the edge, however, turning a passable action game into something that really should be avoided for the foreseeable future. While it’s still playable, and even enjoyable in a fair few instances, its baseline problems combined with the PC’s unique setbacks make Arkham Knight fit for the price drop list.

But hey, at least there’s plenty of DLC coming. Priorities, right?

Bat mobile is actually rather easy to handle, and fun to drive, I am not even a driving fan. I imagine without it, we would be hearing loads of complaining about how Gotham is too big to traverse thru without any help. The bad PC port deserves to be called out for its shortcomings, but that doesn't make its console counterpart any less enjoyable. Game is great and RK defo took advantage of the new consoles power, if you are really tired of the Arkham series formula however, the game does little to change that.

nidhogg3590d ago

You just said my thoughts. But on the batmobile, yes, i agree with you to some extent. Traversing was faster because the world was large. But then i found out i could just launch myself up the air and have a bird's eye view of everything whilst traversing without any twists and turns. Anyhow, the game was good. Easy to plat. But definitely NOT Arkham City good.

bouzebbal3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

Here is the typical reaction of trolls:

No Batmobile ==> Rocksteady need to include batmobile in the game because the game feels the same as previous ones it's old gen in the built of it.

Batmobile in the game ==> it sucks we want a more classic Batman game.

Don't feed them trolls, enjoy your games. People should just boycott treads like this one and downvote websites like this.

I loved every single Arkham episode, Knight will be no different..

Aery3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

The problem with this review is not only about the PC version, but also for the critique that Jim raises. I think he is trying hard again, so I really disagree with him ...

Bimkoblerutso3589d ago (Edited 3589d ago )

@abzdiine

I don't think he's trolling. Generally, Jim Sterling simply writes exactly what he feels about a game, which is more than many shill reviewers can say these days. Feel free to boycott all you want, but I am more inclined to simply disagree (because yes, you can *gasp* respectfully disagree with a review) and boycott the garbage sites that regurgitate exactly what they think readers and publishers want to hear.

Handling the Batmobile is very easy. The controls are very good, specially (for me) with Toggle On. However, The physics of the car are very bad. As long as the car is grounded things are perfect, but the moment you collide with something, or jump with a ramp, the car becomes weightless and bounces terribly.

Aceman183590d ago

For me both AA and Ac are perfect 10s, AK is a solid 9 too much reliance on the scooter lol. They should have cut back on some of those missions. It got to the point where unless I had to use it I just flew around the city as that was more enjoyable to me.

wheresmymonkey3589d ago

I agree withe the review. The batmobile handles like a rockpowered shopping cart, and it doesn't add anything meaningful to the experience. Everything it does aside form the god awful tank battles was achievebale in the other games with your other gadgets.

It's, also easier to get around the map without the damn thing since you can just grapple and glide faster than you can drive through most areas.

failing that, you've been able to quick travel through the past two games anyway so all they'd need to do to compensate is add more quick travel points. Which i think they did anyway.

Ewww. Jim Sterling.

His reviews are entertaining but I stopped taking his scores seriously.

oIITSBIIo3591d ago

I'm not giving you the pleasure of clicking your stupid review.

AtariFanboy3590d ago

Totally not biased right? By the way this is for PC so he was generous giving it a 5.

MadLad3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

But you care enough to pop into the comments section concerning his review to announce as much. You've already legitimized his efforts.

A damn genius, you are.

Vegamyster3590d ago

How do you know if it's stupid if you don't read it?

PS He reviewed the PC version which most should know by now has lots of issues and is one of his biggest gripes and rightfully so.

The 10th Rider3590d ago

@Cobra,

While I certainly think the score is low, just because he doesn't mention the issues until the end doesn't mean they didn't have a significant impact on the score. At least for me, if a game is really smooth running, fluid, nice looking, and issue-less it can turn a bland, boring game into a enjoyable experience. Whereas glitches, bugs, visual glitches that ruin the visual experience...Things like that can turn a game I'd usually love until a miserable experience.

Kingdoms of Amalur comes to mind. I liked the gameplay and the world and everything, but it ran like crap on my PC (which should of been perfectly able to run it) and it was filled with glitches. Completely killed the experience for me.

slappy5083591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

This review is for PC folks, it was barely workable when I downloaded it from steam, so 5/10 is a a fair score. Fortunately I got a refund and bought it for playstation, much better on that platform
I do disagree with his assertion that the Batmobile is complete trash. I enjoy the "racing" tracks, vehcile combat and traversing around the city with it, perhaps the technical issues just made it hard for him to like anything from this game

nidhogg3590d ago

5/10 is a fair score. He was playing it on the PC. So maybe the experience itself made him give it a 5. I really like this game but personally it's just a 7.5 for me. It did not blow me away like The Witcher or Bloodborne did. It's like i was playing Arkham City again.. with a car.

I would also add Risk of Rain 2 as long as you don't stray too far from a power source as each run can be long as the hours melt away. Another thing to note is that based on the reports, the FPS may drop into the 40s if a lot of enemies are on the screen.

There is also the Half Life series. If you haven't played half-life before then you can do so now at the super low price.

cthulhucultist149d ago

Mafia was amazing looking and had a great story. Played flawlessly at 30fps as well without dips 99% of the time.

The same is true for Jedi Fallen Order

Sony games as also on sale. Picked up Rachet and Clank, cant wait to try it!

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod376d ago (Edited 376d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers376d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long376d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius376d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

redrum06348d ago

It's a shame they cancelled the game. Definitely the best racing game I've ever played on Playstation. Just got GT7, but it feels so slow and less arcade-y, which is to be expected of a sim racer of course, that I just enjoy it less.
Driveclub also graphically looked insanely good for its time. I wonder what a Driveclub 2 would look like for the PS5.

Demetrius376d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
