Why are you using the lower resolution console version.

Quote Digital Foundry Batman AK PS4 vs XB1:

"In terms of effects work, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Arkham Knight are entirely identical - the only difference coming from resolution, where the Sony console operates at full 1080p, ahead of its 900p Xbox One equivalent. By and large, the games still look very similar, but certain effects - such as chromatic aberration - exhibit rougher edges owing to the Microsoft console's lower resolution."

smalltowngamer5033588d ago

Soooo... are you posting this just to confirm Bytor's comment of "Why are you using the lower resolution console version." cause it still stands that the xbox version is of lower resolution according to your quote. I'm confused

Grap3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

chromatic aberration dunno why they use it's cr@p.

fr0sty3588d ago

Chromatic abberation simulates color distortion by the camera's lens for a film-like look.

Perjoss3588d ago

Chromatic aberration is used to give games a look that is a little less 'video gamey', same reason they add stuff like motion blur, depth of field, distance fog and lens flares. None of these things are required but they all help to make you forget you're looking at a game.

Volkama3587d ago (Edited 3587d ago )

@Perjoss you just pretty much listed the settings I immediately disable :)

Depth of field, film grain, chromatic aberration, and usually motion blur immediately get the chop. Games look much better without effects that deliberately distort the fine detail imo.

Whether they look more or less like a real movie isn't really important to me, I don't really understand why devs strive for it. Still, I'm not going to argue with things that are optional.

You're not going to really notice small resolution differences like that in fairly low quality youtube videos anyway (Or if you do it's not very significant)

In terms of the quality of the assets it looks like they've corrected the previous issues with the PC version.

fr0sty3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

It's over 30% difference in pixel count per frame, not exactly small. But I do agree that compressing that res to a 2.5 mbps video does crap all over the quality.

zidane13413588d ago

@frosty, it doesn't matter if it's 33%,with AA and filtering done correctly you can't tell a difference between 900 and 1080p. Ryse is a perfect example.

starchild3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

@Frosty

I'm not arguing that the difference isn't noticeable in person, only that it isn't that significant of a factor when you're watching a compressed youtube video.

If it was 720p or 480p vs 1080p it would likely cause some issues when trying to compare asset quality. But between 900p and 1080p I think the compression in the video hides most of the difference in clarity that would be there in person.

I find this comparison sufficient to show that they've fixed the missing visual effects in the PC version.

UKmilitia3588d ago

@zidane1341 u must need your eyes checking.
there is a clear difference on a large screen.

on my 42 i cant tell
on my 47 u start to notice
on my 106" the 900p kills games for me unless i sit over 20ft away.

just becaue you cant tell doesnt mean others cant

Because some people still can't accept that the PS4 is more powerful.(than XB1)
So they bunch them together into a generic term like "console vs pc"

Azzanation3587d ago

Who honestly cares which console is more powerful. The Wii was the best selling console last gen and it was by far the weakest so was the PS2 and PS1. Different games available on both consoles, you wouldn't want a PS4 if you want to play Halo and you wouldn't want a X1 if you want to play GoW.

ps5fanboy3588d ago

I have no words , if it doesn't mean that much then use a real low end pc scraping 300×200 and let's compare it to let's say a ps4 version? Sound fair.

Destiny10803588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

Digital Foundry

Arkham Knight renders at 1080p on PS4, and 900p on Xbox One, and by and large this results in a similar 30fps experience on both consoles. Of the two releases, the PlayStation 4 delivers a slightly smoother presentation - there's less screen-tear and consequently a more fluid experience, as visualised in the frame-time graph.

it's kinda sad the xbone can't even reach native 1080p

LifeInNZ3588d ago

Why?

You realise that not all games are 1080p on PS4, do you find that sad or do you just enjoy the games for what they are?

Irishguy953588d ago

Its kinda sad that Ps4 can't even reach 1440p

BeefCurtains3588d ago

It's kinda sad the PS4 can't even reach native 4k.

UKmilitia3588d ago

the xbox muppets are crazy breed.

cant tell the diff between 900p and 1080p and resolution doesnt matter, yet dx12 and the secret coding is gonna make 1080p games.

im not saying a 900p game isnt fun because it is,but on a large screen 900p sucks and its the reason i couldnt keep xb1 because on my 106" screen it likes poor.(even bf on ps4 looked teribleas was 900p).

dRanzer3587d ago (Edited 3587d ago )

Again PS4 is upper hand

IrishSt0ner3587d ago

'Next-gen' 30fps, that's the real sad truth.

JasonKCK3587d ago

What's sad is there is only one AAA 1080p 60fps game out on console. Nether one of the consoles can do what they hyped before release. It's funny how some fans will pick on other consoles while ignoring their own consoles shortcomings.

corroios3588d ago

There isnt any kind of parity because of some kind of marketing deal and its normal that it runs better and at higher rez at the PS4.

Nothing new here and will be like this during this gen.

zidane13413588d ago

Higher res, yeah sometimes but performance? That usually goes to Xbox, especially in those games that are 1080p on PS4 and not Xbox.

Griever3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

Can you give examples for the "usually" better performing Xbox One multiplats? Moreover, performance can only be judged at the same resolution. Make that Xbox One version run at 1080p and then we will talk about which one has the better performance. It is like bragging that you can do more reps with your 10Lbs dumbbells than the person lifting 30Lbs dumbbells. That is not a fair comparison and nothing to be proud of. The Xbox One hardware is just not lifting the same amount of load as the PS4 hardware.

fallacious3588d ago

keep on deluding yourself

ginsunuva3588d ago

Yes, because the Ps4 version runs at > 1080p

x8003588d ago

I have this on PC, GTX970 GPU, 8350 CPU, 8GB RAM, no problems here. Runs 30fps I unlocked it to 60fps runs perfect and all the settings are maxed out.

aquaticDonut3588d ago (Edited 3588d ago )

That's absolutely not true. First of all, no one can run it perfectly at 60 FPS everyone has framedrops, however minor. Secondly, the memory leak was never fixed. With only 8GB of RAM, you will absolutely be running into some hardcore freezing and stuttering if you run the game for an extended period of time. And finally, the 970 simply doesn't have the VRAM capable of supporting the Gameworks effects at its most demanding point, such as when spinning the batmobile's tires. As someone with a more powerful rig, there's absolutely no way your post is true in any way.

Jason_Plays_PC3588d ago

Maxed out on a 970? bull.. I was getting framedrops on my 980m sli laptop which is around a gtx980+ 30-50% of performance or gtx780 sli equivalent.

ShottyGibs3588d ago

That's because the SLI profile is broken. I got the game free with 980ti.. haven't even tried it yet. Never got into the batman games.

We hand-picked the 20 best Steam Deck games under $10 in the Steam Autumn Sale, up to 95% off

I would also add Risk of Rain 2 as long as you don't stray too far from a power source as each run can be long as the hours melt away. Another thing to note is that based on the reports, the FPS may drop into the 40s if a lot of enemies are on the screen.

There is also the Half Life series. If you haven't played half-life before then you can do so now at the super low price.

cthulhucultist143d ago

Mafia was amazing looking and had a great story. Played flawlessly at 30fps as well without dips 99% of the time.

The same is true for Jedi Fallen Order

Sony games as also on sale. Picked up Rachet and Clank, cant wait to try it!

6 Games That Genuinely Deserve A Current-Gen Upgrade

Games such as Mad Max, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Batman: Arkham Knight desperately deserve a modern-day revisit.

thorstein372d ago

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga371d ago (Edited 371d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod371d ago (Edited 371d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers371d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long371d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius370d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

redrum06343d ago

It's a shame they cancelled the game. Definitely the best racing game I've ever played on Playstation. Just got GT7, but it feels so slow and less arcade-y, which is to be expected of a sim racer of course, that I just enjoy it less.
Driveclub also graphically looked insanely good for its time. I wonder what a Driveclub 2 would look like for the PS5.

Demetrius371d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
