May 2015 NPD: PlayStation 4 tops console sales as The Witcher III has strong debut

VB:

"The industry was down a little bit in May, but Sony’s PlayStation 4 gaming console bounced back in a big way.

Total new physical game-related sales at U.S. retailers generated $507.6 million in May, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. That is down 13 percent from $584.9 million last year. Both hardware and software sales were down against a tough comparison to a May in 2014 that had Watch Dogs, Mario Kart 8, and Wolfenstein: The New Order — although it’s not like May 2015 had a dearth of new releases in the $55 billion worldwide console gaming market."

Congrats to CDPR, they are great devs and they deserve all of this success. The Witcher 3 is one of the best RPG's I've ever played, if not the best. If only some of the Bigger Publishers would realize that if they make a great game, gamers will eat it up. They dont have to rely on nickling and diming gamers.

And congrats to Sony, The Ps4 will likely do much better in June as well.

Cant wait for E3:)

MightyNoX3333d ago

Congrats Splatoon.

PS4 doing the Lord's work by moving that software.

BitbyDeath3333d ago

XB1 is up 81% YOY, last May was 77k so XB1 sold 139K.

BiggerBoss3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

@Bitby
139k isnt too bad. May is typically a slow month since E3s around the corner. 77k though, that was pretty bad lol. XB1 has done much better since then

@Mighty and Moonman
my roommate bought a Wii U and Splatoon, loads of fun and different from what Im used to. Ive been missing out on some Nintendo games:)

Cindy-rella3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

So the most powerful and best console won in May. Ps4 wins every day, every week and every month in overall sales worldwide when it comes to consoles. The console war has been over so either people accept it or live in a fantasy world where they think other consoles will catch up. I recently saw some people saying that when halo 5 and forza 6 are released the Xbox one will catch the ps4 in overall sales. I couldnt bother to waste electricity to counter such madness on my pc when i saw that. It would be a waste of time to argue with people who thinks that .

I cant wait for E3. Im hoping for more remastered versions of games i didnt play on ps3. Ratchet remastered, killzone remastered, resistance remastered, folklore, and a few others for ps4. Please save the ink in your pc or tablet if you want to say that youre tired of remastered games. If you dont like something then dont buy it.

Griever3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

Splatoon really surprised everyone. Many thought it would flop commercially but it turned out to be a hit. The Witcher 3 was somewhat of a surprise as well. People were expecting it to sell well but not THIS well given the sales of the previous games. Well deserved sales though. Witcher 3 is an extraordinary RPG experience. I am in love with it! Every RPG fans should give it a try. Anyway congratulations to PS4. We wont be getting those PS4 doomed articles, at least for now, that flooded the website after last months NPD results.

Damn , Ps4 is a Beast

Xbox is doing great too

Lightning Mr Bubbles3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

YES!!! I'm happy PS4 won May.

I had doubts because here on N4G it's been all XBOX One recently, all the stories and push have been for XBOX One.

So take that!

Victory for PS4!

wakeNbake3333d ago

@Cindy
Do you copy and paste the same fanboy rant on every sales article? I forgot Playstation is a religion on this site.

Svinya3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

Hahaha at Cinderellas bullshit in EVERY sales article. She MUST own some sony stock, there's no other explanation..

Docknoss3333d ago

I threw up a little reading Cindy-rella's reply, it was that bad.

Army_of_Darkness3333d ago

"The PS4 version outsold the Xbox One version for every game in the top 10 list that is available on both with the exception of Minecraft."

I don't know why, but that made me giggle a bit. Hahha!

CalibriSerif3333d ago

agree yes! but i'll be real good series.
but yeah go CAVS! i want that title for them so bad, steph can take it next season lol!

on topic:
i can see PS4 taking it monthly until Halo lauches but PS4 will be way way so far ahead. i mean with all the price cuts and bundles MS has done, what more can they do? Give it for free? lol! PS4 just keep on bulldozes everything MS offers, its just a monster!

GameForever3333d ago

Those exclusive Batman consoles that people pre ordered in April through June will sell through on June 23 and increase the PS4 sales by a huge amount.

Moonman3333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

Great to see Splatoon (single platform top 5 in THREE DAYS) and Smash Bros in the top 10. :)

PhoenixUp3333d ago

Did Splatoon dramatically increase Wii U sales in NA

Eonjay3333d ago

We don't know yet... but its gonna be hard to match Mario Kart 8 last May.

Father__Merrin3333d ago

ps4 is the best gaming platform and it shows

SpaceRanger3333d ago

100% agree. Playstation has just been tearing it up since launch around the world. In the ironic and wise words of my friend AussieGamer1:

"People are starting to realise which is the true next gen console and where all the good games are.. "

http://n4g.com/news/1740808...

He said this in regards to the high sales increase of the Xbox from last year to this year. So I'd imagine he'd say the same praise if not more for the PS4 this month with that ideology(:

Clonetrooper11393333d ago

Where all the good games are?

You mean the HD remakes of PS3 games?

That is the only real advantage it has over the competition. Bloodborne is about the only good exclusive title. The others are like Killzone Shadowfall and Infamous Second Son were mediocre.

This entire gen has been about multiplats, thus far.

Just saying. . .neither console has really impressed me, yet.

SilentNegotiator3333d ago

I'm thinking that publishers/developers would agree.

Witcher has not had a single installation on a PS system before and it's still looking like Witcher 3 sold the most copies on Ps4 than any other platform.

That is impressive.

Kribwalker3333d ago

“Xbox One and Xbox Live continue to see strong growth in sales and engagement. Xbox One sales in the U.S. were up 81 percent over May 2014 and active global Xbox Live members, Xbox One and Xbox 360, were up 20 percent,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “We are grateful to our fans for choosing Xbox One and for making Xbox Live the fun and vibrant community that is. We can’t wait to share more on the greatest games lineup in Xbox history at E3 next week.”

So PS4 Xbox 360 PS3 and Wii u sales must have plummeted from may last year if the Xbox one sales jumped 81% but console sales are down from last May.

kraenk123333d ago (Edited 3333d ago )

No. X1 sales last may were abysmal (77k) due to the Kinect less console announcement. 66% more than terrible is still bad.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave112d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan112d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave112d ago (Edited 112d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG

Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno136d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name136d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno136d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood136d ago (Edited 136d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno136d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure135d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
