FFXIII Goes to PC - Nvidia

Square Enix has gone PC. On the first day of the show, the Japanese game publisher announced that Final Fantasy XIII is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (in Europe and North America only) and PC. During a press conference following the Microsoft event, Final Fantasy XIII Producer Yoshinori Kitase discussed the new development strategy that Square Enix has taken with its upcoming games.

Aside from the new The Last Remnant game, which is being created for Xbox 360 and PS3 using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 externally, all new internally-developed games from Square Enix, including Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, and an untitled new massively multiplayer online game, utilize the new PC-based Crystal Tools development environment. These tools allow development teams to create cross-platform games.

"The content will be the same on all platforms," said Kitase. "However, we have yet to determine how many discs will be required for the 360 version. We'll have to consider the differences between formats. Currently the game is being built on PC, where it's actually functional. We're still focusing on making it work on PS3, so it's difficult to know how long the process of taking it to 360 will take."

Thanks to the new PC development platform, Kitase added, "Now that we're developing on a PC base, the pace is going a bit faster," Kitase said. "We haven't introduced new footage of the game, but we should be able to show something new in the near future."

Square Enix showed the beautiful pre-rendered trailer for Final Fantasy XIII at the end of the Microsoft press conference. The publisher has a big event scheduled for Tokyo next month where the first new information will be revealed on all Final Fantasy titles. Previously, the publisher released its online game, Final Fantasy XII, on Xbox 360 and PC.

long time ago in 2005-2006 Square was planning to create FFXIII exclusively for PS3.

But, after seeing Capcom strategy, with multiplatform engine(PC, PS3, X360), they decided to go in SAME way(after all they are 3rd party developers).
That`s why FFXIII was so much delayed, creating multiplatform engine for PC, PS3, X360 requires some time..

Now, after engine is complete, they will be able to create multiplatfrom games, just like Capcom do. Moreover, they will be able to release the game every year, like Lost Planet - 2007, Devil May Cry - 2008, Resident Evil 5 - 2009. Moreover, expect RE5 going to PC.))
Not to mention, there will be some Wii version even for Capcom and Square games.)

KH3 probably will be multiplatform too, looks like every Square game is now going to be multiplatform.
Which is GREAT from one point - MORE people will enjoy GREAT games, with GREAT graphics.
But also SAD, since, we won`t see trully PS3 capabilities using FF game. Though, we still will enjoy GREAT graphics, just like in LP, DMC4 and RE5, but unfortunutely, NOT awesome..

@CrazzyMan how does developing for the PC slow things down? Did you even read the article square said that it speed up development and it currently runs on the PC and they are TRYING to get it to run on the PS3 meaning the PS3 is not as powerful as a PC. I know lots of people believe the cell is a chip from god but it is not it's all hype. DMC looks way better on PC than any console. If any thing the PS3 port from PC is slowing things down because it does have all the bells and whistles as the PC version. I remember seeing the real time demo's of the engine and thinking wow the PS3 can do this and now I find out it's not even running on the PS3 yet. Also the xbox 360 is more like a PC than the PS3 and it will actually port way faster.

Either way this is good for me because I don't have to get an xbox 360 now and I have plenty of PCs to play this on from the harddrive directly with out some blue ray trick to hide it's short comings. I think lots of gamers will start going back to the PC format when this game comes out.

I called this earlier though. Squareenix has a dream and no system is going to stand in their way which is a good thing. I just hope more people put this kind of effort into their games so that they have to go multiplatform to recoup cost. Now if it comes to the Wii then I will fall out of my chair laughing!

Technically most of your PS3 games are gimped yet you don't have any thing to compare them to if they are exclusive. The PC has 4 core systems out there and the GPU will crush a PS3 flops wise with it's video card. You can easily make this game multi threaded but what is going to hurt is if they use the full power of the PC to out shine the PS3 version which they are not going to do so technically the PC version will be gimped by having to lower it's output to match the PS3. Also too the crystal engine runs on every thing from the Wii to PC. it will not be gimped compare to the other versions. It's not hard to limited your self once you know what your specs are.

If you fall for hype then you will over shoot and have to trash lots of cool stuff. Let them release the game before you predict some thing as big as FF13. The time it takes to make some thing like that is just crazy.

Fulfilling your vision by not porting to another system that is more powerful is just silly. The same goes for not porting to a slightly different system with equal power. I'm hearing lots of talk about kojima standing up for his vision but he is a fanboy to the tee and there is nothing wrong with that SONY needs developers like that. After all the talk about how powerful the cell was and it MGS4 being part of the hype machine it would be a big mistake for him to come out and be like well the PC is way better for this game or the 360 let use use more shaders or some thing. What does the PS3 have to offer that a PC does not have? More ram more cell like cpus? Modern GPU have 128 of these little cells going and they can actually run their own programs faster than the powerPC chip that is the work horse of the cell. We don't want to talk about the core duos there is nothing gimped about those at all. Intel chips could run multicore stuff since the P4 days they called it threading. They don't even have to clock them high to beat the PS3 either.

There is a reason why apple switch from IBM to intel and I'm sure they knew about the cell also.

why? sure the pc version will be superior graphics/sound wise, but to have this superiority you need a good rig. some ppl have it, some don't. on a console everyone experiences the same amount of detail.

Thanks Square, the 360 version will be superior to the low PS3 version. Only the xbox360 entertainment System gives Square the real power to dev for! With the Power tools from MS they will be able to make a superb version of what they dreamed.
Because Square also saw the poor MGS4 sales in Japan.. from place 1 to 14 after 1 week... they decided to make their mega hit first on 360 and then port the game to PS3 like every dev who wants to make a profitable game nowadays.

At least, MGS4 sold more than any 360 game in Japan. Actually, the PS3 is being developed first then 360 since now sales for the 360 sucked and it's still PS3 exclusive in Japan because Japanese gamers know what they want and what they want is FFXIII on a console that doesn't break. This is precisely why those in charge of the FF series will never approach Kojima's level. Kojima is all about innovation and breaking the fourth wall, about creating unparalleled,pure next-gen gaming experiences without compromising the quality or original vision of his gaming titles.

Porting MGS4 to the 360 (and PC, for that matter) would surely have done financial wonders for him, but at the same time, would have compromised the quality of MGS4 as we know it, and that is precisely why he opted to keep it exclusive and take advantage of the PS3's architecture.

ps3 exclusives are more nex gen than 360 exclusives. ps3 exclusives have more action/enemys on screen wile holding their AI than any 360 game and thats what makes ps3 games truthfully better than 360 games cause the 360 hardwear cant handle those tasks. id choose quality over quantity any day.

It was already obvious Square was milking out the franchise.
It is affecting the value of the brand though, but the gaming industry has reached a whole other level. Most platforms are similar and development costs a fortune.

It's too bad they didnt even give it a timed exclusive on ps3 though.. a few other FF games arrived on PC. Since Xbox is pretty much a PC, i dont blame them for porting it over there either. Maybe that was their thought to begin with.. but who knows.

Well I can't say I am all that bothered about FF on the PC, I remember playing the demo for FF7 (I think) and thought it was dull and repetitive. However I don't think we should be slagging Square Enix off for this. I firmly believe people should be able play the game on the system they want too and in a way they want too. So for that Square Enix should be applauded. However I can't see many people wanting to play FFXIII on the PC though.

Most of that games that don't sell well on the PC are generally just crap tbh, look at Half Life series, Portal etc and see how many people bought it then look at WoW, Age of Empire series etc and you will see that the PC is a viable platform, its just that the PC gets lots of console ports which most of the time they are plain crappy.

I doubt it will be 50GB or even remotely close. It is probably gonna use a 25GB disc on PS3 so it can be a 4 DVD game on 360 and PC. Now, that MS gives Square the best tools to dev for and FF13 will be based on PC code we all know which version will have the better port. But BECAUSE of the crap hardware of the POS3 Square will have to gimp down the 360 version to make it equal with the POS3 version.

Most games for consoles are DEVELOPED ON THE PC using specific tools. The game is being designed for namely the PS3 and will also be brought to other systems.

Port to PC isn't surprising move (if the report is true), just need to consider what kind of system requirement it is needed to run the game. I bet more people prefer buy next gen console then upgrading their computer...and the piracy problem is another issue.
