It's not the first new one in a decade and a half.
Code Name Steam, Pushmo, and others have also come out since then...
Seriously, everyone complains about Nintendo not doing new games, yet many of the new games they do, aren't even given recognition, let alone fair credit...

You examples are both hanhelds, and published not developed by Nintendo. Do they actually hold the rights? Intelligent Systems isn't owned by Nintendo, they just work with them a lot.. so not Nintendo IPs like Splatoon.. same way that Wonderful101 isn't a new Nintendo IP.

If I'm wrong on that it might have helped if they'd been as heavily marketed as Splatoon.. they actually want people to know Splatoon exists!

Take Pikmin and ARMS, for example, which we adore but struggle to compete with the tentpole franchises when it comes to sales numbers or mainstream mindshare.

So, again, how has Splatoon risen to become one of Nintendo's most important series in Japan?
