Hmm,never had an issue with choppiness. I am using a 1TB passport HD, however it does not have an external power source, instead I use a Y cable adaptor.
Nintendo recommends a Hard Drive with an external power source, but I have had Zero issues with My Passport HD, and I have about 200 MGs of games on it. Also its the size of a wallet, and I have no bulky power source.

I thought I would save money by sticking an old hard drive in a cheap, powered case. What a mistake that was. The damn thing would disconnect even after I tried this trick, would basically disconnect EVERY time I used it.
I switched over to one of Nintendo's recommended drives, and have had zero problems with it so far
I use a WD 320gb 7200 rpm drive with 8mb cache in a generic external case with its own power supply. Not had any problems yet. And hopefully I wont now that I have mentioned it.

I got my Wii U not too long. Would just plugging an external HDD into the USB port work or do I have to open the Wii U and attach it? Cant view the site on my phone.

works well and I have over 800 gigs left, best external on the market for Wii U, got my 1tb for 50, but this Amazon price is not bad either....I cant wait to download xenoblade, devil third, splatoon, fatal frame, and bayonetta 2 on it.....I have not buy bayonetta yet so just waiting for deals
