Ken McKown writes: The From A to Z series lets our editors go back and take a look at games from past generations that are classics, overlooked gems, or just titles they remember fondly. The idea behind this is to pick five games from each letter of the alphabet, once a week to showcase. This delivers 26 weeks and 130 games to talk about. Hopefully it sparks some conversation, and of course plenty of memories.
Our first series will focus on Sony’s first entry into the console business, the PlayStation.
Let’s continue with the letter “D”.
The latest Switch firmware update kills off support for the Elon Musk-owned social media company.
Social garbage should be abandoned altogether.. the world is stupid since these things got introduced
I would say YouTube was more to blame for this weird unrest we are seeing at the minute. That platform has given license to some of the stupidest people to build advice channels for kids growing through their formative learning years. It's no wonder there are so many incels around.
It’s for posting content like game captures, not responding to your boo’s pool pictures.
But F twitter anyway
correction, was a cesspit,
now more of just a swamp / everglades / marshland
Never even considered using it. And now that it’s an official Porn app I wouldn’t associate with it either when there are children who have consoles
Sony aims to release live service PlayStation games day & date on PC and PS5, but single-player games will have more "strategic approach."
How? I’m sorry but how when they literally port their games to the PC now after not even 2 years, it’s rumored GoW Ragnarok is next.
The best thing they could have done is focus on the generation before with PS3 / PS4 titles and when it got to the PS6 then start porting PS5 games so people will want to get the sequel on the new console
Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming
Rock Star does the same thing. Release 1st on consoles, wait a year or two then release on PC. It's clearly a strategy that works for them.
They don't need a lot of PC gamers to move to Playstation, but they just need a few who would also buy into it and possibly double dip. There are some very unhappy gamers on Twitter, who wanted to hear day and date for all games.
Fox
Your analyse is not accurate..
If sony keeps things the way they are then they will grow the business. Some pc gamers who really liked God of War for example might buy PS4 or 5 to play Ragnarok. Same if they announce ghost of tsushima 2 or a new Ratchet game.
Rockstar?
Yeah I loved playing Red Dead Redemption on PC…….
@Cacabunga
I highly doubt it, PC gamers have their setups, if they didn’t budge for years to get a console despite all the cool exclusives then they aren’t going to budge now knowing a new PS5 game will get a port 2 years later
@cacbunga
Basically you're functioning under the assumption that PC players are impatient, rich and stupid.
Most will not budge. But if the hype is real enough they'll get a few. But those few won't actually be invested in the platform.
Those unhappy gamers will just have to suck it up. I'm sure Sony sees how thats worked out for Xbox. Why tf would they follow in their footsteps
How?
According to Sony, by co launching live service games like Helldivers2 day one, then enticing PC players to want to play sequels on the console for SP games.
That's how. If you play Ghost of Tsushima and Sony launches GoT 2 on PS later this year, you're more apt to want to grab the console and play the sequel instead of waiting.
Yeah, pc players are the most patient of players. They will just wait for the game to come to pc.
You're just spitting back out the Sony PR line.
PC-first and PC-centric gaming is a different beast. Helldivers 2's popularity and GoT's popularity are because they're good solid games, not because they're from PlayStation publishing.
It's the same PlayStation that put Helldivers 2 for sale internationally, then pulled their PSN-Steam removal card. The same PlayStation that released Returnal with UE4's dreaded shader stutter. The same PlayStation that released TLOU Part 1 in a broken state.
If Sony's PS4 slate of titles didn't convince PC gamers, if their current PS5 titles still don't, ports of games they've had *years* of knowing and reading and hearing about aren't going to convince them to finally buy a console.
Don't fall so easily for the same PR BS that fabricates quotes from their own studio heads.
I mean that's certainly the thinking, but for most PC gamers that just won't work. Like in a rare circumstance if someone was already on the fence about a console that might get them to take the plunge and buy a PlayStation, but it will be the exception rather than the rule.
PC gamers are super patient
There's no f****** way, for example, they are going to get a PS5 the moment Ghost of Tsushima 2 is announced just because they played the PC port of the first game
The mindset?
"Ah cool GoT2 has been announced, really enjoyed the first game. Anyway I'll just play on the dozens of other games I have while I wait for the obvious PC port from Sony in like 2 years"
Not a chance they'll all wait now.
@tacoboto
"You're just spitting back the Sony PR line."
I literally said: "According to Sony."
I was responding to someone who asked "How?"
I gave Fox an answer that reflects Sony's thinking. Maybe read the OP's comment and then reading a reply to that person as if it's an answer to their question instead of sounding off in such a bizarre way. See Jeece's reply to mine.
@Dom I do. Sony may not, but then again, they've made billions in the gaming industry and you've made $0.
@thorstein PC gamers have been condition to wait... Epic Games exclusives don't sell well and EA, Ubisoft, and MS have all come back/or arrived on Steam and that's all for preferred store front that doesn't cost money at all so to think people will rush out to spend 500 dollars on a console (whichvcould be used to help pay for PC upgrades) is a bit naive.
I think some of yall are giving pc gamers to much credit. Not every pc gamer is gonna be the same. I'm sure sony isnt expecting all pc gamers to switch, that would be foolish. Idk how many pc goers are there. 500 million 400 million idk really. Say son bgets 5 million of them to it was worth it. If you say none imma call bs
You're mistakenly speaking for all PC gamers, there are bound to be some people who are not willing to wait and for Sony those are potential console buyers.
eh, no ... if a PC gamer is playing on a PC, they'll continue to do so ... there are tons n tons of games on Steam alone and the steam gamers' backlog stories are one of the most discussed topic you'll find in PC forums ... indie is already huge there, plus early access, PC-exclusive titles, VR, big publishers' titles and now Sony's ports too.
Realistically speaking, usually there's not enough time to complete the backlog alone, than go buy a separate console altogether.
The only game that has the power somewhat to make a PC gamer to get a console is GTA VI.
PC gaming existed and proliferated well before this recent Sony's PC decision.
@romulus23
True, there will be new gamers who will be exposed to PlayStation IPs, and they will possibly obtain PSN accounts, both of which make people more inclined to purchase PlayStation.
I don’t think you understand PC gaming. We have sooooo many games to play it’s kind of ludicrous. The insane Steam backlog is not a myth. So, we’ll happily wait for the best version of a game.
How these guys think that they're only pc gamers that won't buy a console, I'll never know..lol. we're talking about the whole world here..not a few guys on this site or reddit.
Edit: in fact there's posts on reddit how they bought a ps5 after having played a few exclusives on PC.
"Not a chance they'll all wait now."
You don't know what all of them will do. Some may wait some may not.
Well, if they want the games when they release, they will need a PlayStation. If they are ok with waiting, then they can do that. I think it’s a sound gameplan for PlayStation. The release of games on PC, will generate additional fans for the ips.
So who cares how / when someone chooses to spend or not spend their money? Sony gets their money for their game sold either way whether its on PS5 or PC, so in the end what does it matter?
PC gamers will wait a year to get a game $10 cheaper lol. they ain't gonna go out and spend $500 on a system to play 1 game. people underestimate them big time.
@Fox
It actually works, i know some of my friends and cousins who cannot wait and bought a Ps5 to play Horizon FW. In fact they cannot believe that "ps has amazing games" lol
Sure there's others who can wait a whole year or two but then there's others who have to play as soon as possible.
*** Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming ***
I think a lot of people who would abandon consoles entirely don't because of the wait. Sure, they aren't drawing new users from PC like they want, but they are maintaining while getting more from PC-only gamers (possibly even double taps from those who own both).
The PS5 Pro is going to be WAY above the average PC of users on Steam.
The PS5 Pro will be able to play every single game they have released on PC at PC settings with a minimum of 60FPS and higher with unlocked framerates.
I agree, there is zero logic from Sony on this. Sony completely underestimate how stubborn a PC player is. They can wait, I'll now wait as I've stopped buying games for my PS5 and will now acquire them for free on PC.
"While Helldivers 2 was released day and date on both PS5 and PC, don’t expect single-player narrative-driven games to be released in the same boat by Sony anytime soon. - This was confirmed by PlayStation’s soon-to-be co-CEO Hermen Hulst in Sony’s business segment presentation"
There you have it. Won't be 'day and date' single player games on PC anytime soon or for the forseeable future. They understand single player games are Playstation's backbone.
So much for the nonsense narrative that playstation is somehow failing so they are going to immediately start releasing every single game day and date on PC lol.
Agreed. First & foremost Playstation not only wants to sell their AAA first party games but their gaming consoles to play them on that is why their AAA first party games come to PC later after it sells on PS consoles.
I was told that Playstation was doing so bad on here and on X that Helldivers 2 was going to release on Xbox and Sony was going to start releasing all games on pc day and date with playstation. Why do people constantly lie on the internet!!!!!
We've gone from you'll never see PS games on PC, to you'll never see any PS games day one on PC, to you'll see some PS games day one but have to wait for others.
I mean, its kinda looks like it's heading one way no? That "wait" is going to get shorter and shorter.
It's happening.
God of War 2018 - 4 years
Horizon Zero dawn - 3 years
Horizon Forbidden West - 2 years
Well, with MS going full PC/multiplatform, PlayStation will need to adapt. Luckily, they are in a position to hold the fort for all lovers of console gaming. Otherwise, if MS’s business model was the norm, we can all kiss console gaming goodbye.
Thank god for Sony.
Ragnarok is now 1y and 10m between PS-PC release. Its only going to get shorter over time.
Well, change of leaderships on Sony did that, under Jim it looked like a lot has changed. Who would have thought eh?
Who would have thought under Big ole Phil xbox games would come to Playstation eh?
That's a smart move because at the end of the day playstation is a hardware business and need to sell hardware folks
Considering the amount of bangers PlayStation and Nintendo make, your name doesn't sound very apt.
Well I think he means that on PC, all software eventually is playable on it. Which is true.
Consoles just are a convenient way of playing some sooner than later.
Darth, all software eventually is playable on PC through emulation and theft of games. You forgot that part. It's not through legal means.
Apocalypse- You consider emulation theft of games? LMAO
Way to shill for corporations.
This gen has been trash. I was already on the fence but caved and bought the consoles, I have regretted that decision. Most of the games that I would play come to PC anyway. I'm done with consoles. I have had the best time with PC this gen and a good amount last gen that it just pulled me away.
This is probably the best they can do for now. Selling hardware is their heritage. It's what they've always done since the beginning. They're doing the best they can to hold on to that.
Let's see if they will be consistent with their actions too.
Only when it's more profitable than not. Right now there's no rush. PC gamers treat these old games like they are new releases.
PC market proliferated well before Sony's "drip feed" and will continue to proliferate with or without the "drip feed".
LMAO, these takes.
None of this makes sense. make a point so I can at least respond. I have also found that when people use acronyms like 'that' they aren't very confident in what they are saying. You might not be the case, but in general it's like that.
PC gamers are not going to flock to PlayStation to play their games, but Sony is fine having them double dip for the cost or porting games years later without alienating their bread and butter customers. It's just free money.
I don't think Sony strategy will work. So Sony idea is advertise single player experiences to PC gamers at a higher cost thus making us want a ps5 or whatever for the sequel. Do they know how much the average pc gamer has invested? I agree with a post here PC gamers are patient and Microsoft is taking a nicer approach. Stop the exclusives and just embrace gaming on a whole. Sony is still protecting their infrastructure of exclusive games to PS platform like Nintendo. If devices like the Steamdeck have taught us anything people want freedom. We're talking about PC here with a backlog of games into oblivion. I just I think I just think I might have a couple games to keep me busy while I'm waiting for the 3rd Spiderman game or next god of war to release and if it don't oh well. PC is a universal platform in which all games should be and can be played. After all every game started on PC at some point.
If that means more pc ports then all the better. Then release the sequel maybe 1-2 years later for more profit. Hope that means ghost 2 is in the works, I am having a blast with the first game on PC. PC gamers are willing to wait for years and sales for games as backlogs are incredible on PC.
If that is the case, then they should focus on single player games as those as to be released later on PC and will be more likely to entice PC players.
However according to this article
https://wccftech.com/playst...
QUOTE
"Sony confirmed the names of the seven studios focusing on single-player games with a narrative focus - Asobi, Insomniac Games, Santa Monica Studio, Sucker Punch, Naughty Dog, Firesprite and Housemarque, and the nine working on pure live service games or hybrid titles - Bungie, San Diego Studio, Firewalk, Haven and Neon Koi for pure live service games and Guerrilla Games, Polyphony, Media Molecule and Bend Studio.
UNQUOTE
Thus more live service games than single player will be released if true.
Sony completely underestimates the PC players stubbornness to wait years or to simply do without. Which is what PC players have been doing for decades until you started giving your big games away for free on torrent sites. Ghosts of Tsushima was at over 500k seeders on a popular site and the best estimates are that game sold around 70k on Steam.
They can if they want to and Sony doesn’t need all of them to buy PlayStations. Their money is good enough. And as far as patience goes, they are not that patient. They are gamers just like everyone else. Besides they have the money because they generally have expendable funds. Shit, when I play on my PC regularly, my electric bill is through the roof. Haha
It's a logical yet flawed business model.
It's flawed because if it were effective, people would have already shifted from PC to PlayStation years ago. The same people would migrate from Steam to the Epic Games Store, etc. Making them wait in a world already saturated with games won't compel them to buy a console.
Despite this, it's a logical strategy as it represents guaranteed money when Sony decides to port their game. Additionally, a second release allows them to rekindle interest in an older title, resulting in title sales. Finally, it satisfies a segment of the PlayStation fanbase that appreciates the concept of exclusivity.
"It's flawed because if it were effective, people would have already shifted from PC to PlayStation years ago."
Worked for me. PS' first wave was back in the 90s and I was caught up in it. Between Sierra, Looking Glass Studios, and Psygnosis most of my favorites on PC were from Psygnosis.
Sierra, Looking Glass are gone and so is Psygnosis, but Psygnosis game me 3 or more favorites on PC and when Psygnosis became Studio Liverpool I picked up a PSP for WipEout Pure and switch to PS2 instead of playing on PC
I have a PC it's not much for gaming anymore; being 7 years old now it can't run most modern PS5 era games well at 1080p30 maxed out. I'd basically run all PS5 ports and 1080p30 medium or lower settings with stutters and such. R&C is a great example of that. 900p30 with much longer loading due to PCIe gen 3 NVMe speeds. Anyway, I do rarely buy PC games still and have for over a decade. Back towards the end of PS3 era I got a meh laptop with weak gaming potential but managed Crysis 1 at 1080p30 with a mix of medium and high settings. It could hardly run late PS3 games including NFS:MW which ran fine on PS3 and while the most complete portable version was a visual cut the PS Vita ran the game better than my laptop! Today my phones run games like Grid: Autosport and Alien: Isolation much better than my old laptop at the same or higher settings and resolutions.
This is where my PC is now. Picked it up as a workstation at the end of the PS4 gen and now it can hardly run the simpler games made for PS5. Unless it's a really simple indie title like Animal Well these days. It really feels like my PC became less computationally capable. Yet, FH5 runs maxed out at 1440p30 with RT. Of course FH5 wasn't the spectacle people touted it as. Some still think FH5 is a top-tier game visually for the PC platform. To me that's a bit generous of them.
Look, the point is, I moved to PS2 and PSP after I discovered some of my favorite PC games were on PS. I ultimately still wasn't a 'fanboy' at the time. I entered fanboy age during the PS3 era and that lasted for all of 5 years and I picked up an Xbox 360 during the PSN outage which ironically only made me understand that sometimes fanboys can have very solid arguments. In the end. Most of my gaming is on console primarily PS. I stopped caring about Nintendo and Xbox burned me with Xbox 360.
Back in the 90s my favs were PS 1st party games on PC. Thing is I didn't know it. As PS started publishing my favorites, I left PC as a platform behind at least largely speaking. I still have a decent PC, but I don't do a lot of gaming on it and don't ever feel pressure to upgrade like I used to. PC as a platform has so many massive drawbacks and when I was young my OCD didn't help. Even getting treated for OCD and trying some recent PC games I still fell into old habits tweaking game settings to get the most out of my HW. It takes up so much time and is just... too much effort. On literally prefer playing on my phone to playing on PC and rather ironically PS4 and phones were the first places where I saw 90 and 120FPS games respectively thanks to PSVR on PS4 and 120hz displays on phones. Honestly it's not at all difficult to give up 120FPS for significantly better visuals and most PS5 games I play at 30FPS for even better visuals anyway.
The fact that 30FPS doesn't slow me down probably also makes me a better gamer. I even play Stellar Blade at 30... though, the final boss kicked my butt so much I switched to story mode. Happy to say hard mode was still unlocked when I finished the game and so far I've not experienced any serious difficulties against the hard mode bosses yet.
Anyway, PC is just as locked down especially with Windows 11 and more people will ultimately be f••••d out of caring about PC gaming for the waste of time that it is, eventually. My PC is a means to capture very high quality 1440p60 gameplay from PS5 these days.
PC is an open platform, Sony will release their games on it in a manner that fits with their bottom line. Dummies act like these decisions are not backed by research and data by people who are paid to weigh/monitor these decisions 24/7. Playstation matters to Sony in a way that some don't understand or pretend not to. Microsoft unlike the other 2 platform holders can be reckless and take big gambles with their xbox division because it has almost no relevance to their bottom line. There is almost zero case to be made for day and date when the potential damage it could cause is taken into account.
If you own a gaming PC why would you buy a PS5 for a single player game that's going to release on PC in a year or two? There's plenty of games to play whilst you wait.
If you want more people to buy your console do what Nintendo do. Don't release your games on another console and don't release on PC.
I dont think many pc gamers will buy a playststion to play playstation games, they will just wait the 1-2 yrs for it to get ported. That being said, this is the right decision. MS destroyed their console business, now there is literally zero reason to own an xbox.
Yeah..... But port the predicessors to PC to make you question why you even has a console in the first place
Sorry, Sony. As a PC gamer with a hefty rig, you still have not convinced me on why a PS5 console is worth my money. At this stage, it's safe to say it will never happen. Downvote me all you like. But someone please explain to me logically why anyone with even a decent PC rig would want to shell out $500+ for PS hardware at this point? Also, please don't use timing in your argument - I have plenty of games to play, I can wait and I don't care how long. (i.e. that's not a valid reason for shelling out $500+).
SP games they're keeping at 80 bucks for 2-3 years? Yeah, by the time they're considering a discount/sale, PC gamers will be able to pick it up at a lower price and play it with better performance.
This strategy won't bring in PC players to Playstation 5/6. It will sinply mean that those console-players who refuse to pay 80 bucks for incomplete SP games will increasingly just wait for a cheaper and better PC release instead.
Tell me you know nothing about PC gamers without telling me you know nothing about PC gamers. Sony should just put the games day and date on PC and be done with it
Not Sony first party, GTA6 on PS5 Pro will be the one for Sony if Microsoft sits this model refresh out. PC release will be a while to wait
Interesting strategic approach sure, but people don’t always act like you hope they would.
It’s a rather safe strategy tho. If it works, great, but if it doesn’t, no harm really.
Doesn't really make sense. Since, it's going to be released on PC, players will just wait for it to become available. If they really want to entice players to play on playstation, than don't release any of their first party games on PC at all.
Exclusives it's what made specific console unique from other. It's still working for Nintendo, so Sony should have just kept it to their platform as well.
Also, Sony should just stop it with these live service games, and stick to what they do best, and that is make great single player games. It's helped since the psone era to now.
When a PS game comes to steam, PC gamers "oh cool another game to my vast catalogue!". If it doesn't, PC gamers "OK, I'll play a game from my vast catalogue!". People on here thinking PC gamers are port begging, when in reality they don't care either way seeing as Sony is making these decisions.
Another leaker has claimed that a PSP/PS Vita style PlayStation handheld is in the works, and it'll supposedly support PS4 games.
PS4 native with PS5 remote play capabilities. Would be sweet.
And let PS Portal support cloud streaming for all PS+ games.
Going off all the pricing behavior of Sony to this point. I'm willing to bet it will be cheaper than the Steam Deck. And when the price is revealed and I am right, send me a message.
Could be an attempt to counter switch 2 which will have PS4 power.
Imagine all the PS4 third party re releases switch 2 is going to get.. “PS4 portable” could get the exact same games once again and publishers can resell software ..
If this portable has provides PS5 remote play on top then it will have a nice argument and exclusive feature.
Cacabunga,
Possibly, though I think any attempt to win against Nintendo in the handheld space is hopeless.
I loved the PSP and I still enjoy my Vita, but there's something about a full scale Mario and Zelda in your hands that makes it clear Sony should share the space, but never dream of taking it.
It's a very safe bet from Sony to have it run PS4 games too because then neither you nor developers are on the hook to make dedicated games for it.
Time will tell. I hope it's real. I'm willing to bet that it is—this is an inevitable strategy for Nintendo and the Surface team is allegedly handling Microsoft's next hardware stint. Sony wouldn't be the only one without portable hardware.
$199 for a dedicated handheld when they are trying to sell that piece of shit streaming screen for the same price. Hilarious.
It would be a niche product like Portal. Not bad, but not mainstream. It's legacy PS4 right?
The switch 2 and next steam deck will be out by then and will likely be way more popular
The switch 2 will be a handheld Series S for kids and the next steam deck will be ridiculously over priced for a bunch of aging CRPGS and F2P mobile style games.
@Anast the switch 2 will Fortnite dance on the new Sony handhelds grave
Playstation can't compete with Nintendo there
With playstation porting all it's games to pc and by extension steam deck it pretty much makes the new pshandheld system irrelevant
Especially since all I ever hear from the Sony crowd is "I NEED graphics or I can't enjoy the game" a handheld PS4 is going the same way as Sony's handheld ps3
If the switch 2 isn't backwards compatible, it will fail.
If this is true, then it will already have a large of games to play from the start, add ps1,ps2,psp,vita games to the mix, and it can be massively popular.
The switch is a Mario machine and for kids, they have their own space. Tell me where I am wrong here.
The problem is that Sony isn't porting all of the games to the Steam Deck specifically. The Steam Deck can't play every game. It even has a verified category with games that run the best and a "playable" category that can barely run games. So, the best option to play would obviously be a Sony product.
The last point is inane. I can't respond to comments that use caps. the point should be able to stand on it's own
It doesn't matter hiw popular the Playstation handheld is if it shares the same library as the PS5. It just brings more people into the ecosystem and provides them with more ways to play their games.
@anast Nintendo is competing with Sony and no amount of backpedaling will change that
They were competing during the GameCube era and the Wii u era, coincidentally the 2 gens they lost to Sony, but we're suddenly not competing during the ds, Wii and 3ds era because they beat playstation, but of course we can't have that can we so "Nintendo isn't competition Sony auto wins"
The switch is more then a mario and even a first party machine these days as there are plenty of games, specifically Japanese and indi games that are doing better on switch then their ps counterpart
It's irrelevant that Sony isn't specifically porting to steam deck, the games will end up on there and people will wait for a pc port just like how playstation fans wait for a playstation port of games, you aren't unique
Playstation fans constantly brag on graphics, so a handheld that only plays PS4 games isn't going to entice a lot of them, like the vita before it, and Sony has a history of just dropping unsuccessful projects, the vita psvr and it looks like the portal isn't doing too hot either
They literally charged people $199 for a bottom-of-the-barrel tablet with a DualSense controller bolted on. So I really can't see them releasing a powerful yet affordable native handheld.
I love my portal I’m handicapped and the portal lets me play on days I’m not at my best. It’s great .and the screen is admazing even though it’s not oled
If you had every PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and PSV game then sure but I mean if it's just the PS4 why not just get a Steam Deck?
You might be correct, but it depends on the price point. Also, most PC gamers wait years for Sony releases, so it might be better just to get the PS4 handheld.
I'd be surprised if Sony reversed course and continued to put new releases on PS4. It would cannibalize their PS5 sales
If it supports your library, some people own more ps4 games than steam games. I know I do.
I might buy something like this to play my old library but man those old games are cheap on steam. This console would have to be cheap to make sense. I don't see it happening
@CrazyCoconuts
I also think it sounds a little off. I would probably buy if it could run Ps5 games, but that sounds expensive. Being ps4 only is a little limiting I think.
But if it ran all ps4 titles and new stuff created for the handheld. then it could be interesting. Basically a Vita that just happened to come with a huge ass backlog of existing games.
My libraries are roughly equal in size for both, maybe if I could play more classics games on the Playstation one I could consider it. But it's a tough selling point for people who aren't already heavily invested in the Playstation ecosystem.
Deck is very viable option given how good PS3 and switch emulation have become. Even new releases are chugging along at 30fps.
To be fair, I have a lot of ps4 games I don’t have on steam that is can play on my ps5 but I choose to play ps5 games on my ps5.
I also haven’t rebought any of my PlayStation exclusives on PC because I own them on my ps4/5 and even the upgraded ways that rival the pc version. So, if I wanted to play them on my steam deck I would still have to buy them again which if I bought the 6 top games Spider-Man 1,2, mm, horizon, fw , GoW and ragnarok and GoT with LoU1,2. It would more then. Likely be the cost of this device.
So, instead of double dipping I would buy the handheld and if it has a playable sf6 that actually works online (steam deck is not functional) I think I would want it for myself
If you have them in digital form, for sure. Because I don't see Sony giving you a digital copy of your old physical PS4 games. That doesn't sound like them at all.
And also, Steam doesn't depend on PS4 games. PC got more games that generation than all the consoles combined. The ports of PlayStation games are just one of the cherries on top of the cake.
@vits I do have them in digital form which is why I said from my perspective. I also have a steam deck but that doesn’t mean everything runs on it which not everything is playable. And as I am also stating the perks of why people WOULD want them even while having a steam deck it’s weird to see people disagreeing purely because I wouldn’t want to double dip financially.
But even in the event you have physical copies of games, if you have ps plus most if not all of the ps4 games are there. So, it’s not like the options are non existent and people can’t find VIABLE reasons to purchase the device.
If people are justifying the portal, they can justify a dedicated portable. The desire to make it seem like people can only own one thing these days is an odd occurrence.
@Lexreborn2
Then for sure, if you already have your library in digital form, something that can tap into it is definitely a good deal. That's basically the same reason why the Steam Deck is popular with PC and Steam users in general, because their library is available on it.
PS Plus is an extra cost though, and those games aren't yours. So I get where you are coming from, but that is a different discussion. As for the Portal, I don't get how people justify that piece of crap either, but they sure did so I can see a PS Vita 2 being sucessful. I don't see it being cheap or better value than the Steam Deck or any Windows Handheld, unless Sony really makes some radical changes.
As for why people want one device to rule them all instead of a bunch of them, it's likely because most people here are adults. If I recall correctly, the N4G user base is around their mid-30s. At this point in life, the issue is not usually owning things but actually having time to use them.
@Vits,
I don't think a new PS handheld would be worth it for me after owning the Steamdeck, assuming there will probably be a lot of overlap of both libraries in my case, so just having the one device is fine for me (I don't need the clutter or devices with too much overlap). I'll probably just stream the PS4 games I don't have on Steam to the Steam Deck via Chiaki, I would probably need the PS handheld to have its own exclusives to entice me.
Because if you already have a large digital library of PS4 titles and this plays PS4 games you don't need much more than the system. It's also rumoured to play some ps5 games.
If you buy a steam deck you have to re buy your library.
If you are already in he PS ecosystem you probably have hundreds of digital PS4 games. Especially if you are on PSPlus Extra. These folks, of which there are millions upon millions would probably rater have access to the games they already own vs buying them all again on Steam.
This is the question, might be nice for the Playstation exclusive games from previous generations, but Sony's Playstation Classics lineup is seriously lacking, especially from their PS1 catalogue, I don't think the PS2/PS3 catalogue are that huge either.
A Steam Deck is already somewhere between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro in terms of power. Without those exclusive games from Sony's previous consoles, I don't see how you could convince anyone a new Playstation handheld to be better value than a Steam Deck. I can also literally put previous Playstation's libraries onto it without too much trouble.
“ Without those exclusive games from Sony's previous consoles, I don't see how you could convince anyone a new Playstation handheld to be better value than a Steam Deck.”
Exactly and this is a prime example of why exclusives matter
Without them Steamdeck just looks like the better choice overall
I still play my vita. The oled screen was too good for it's time. I obviously had to home brew it but playing my old snes/ps1 games on it is so good.
So many times I've been tempted to hack my Vita but I just can't bring myself to do it. I kind of want it to be as originalas possible. Also, for emulation I have my steam deck.
I was tempted to hack my Vita, but I couldn't bear to risk it, something about having the original software/experience on the handheld.
I'll happily emulate on the Steam Deck, especially the games that weren't available on the Aussie store or ones I just missed out on.
How many people will buy this at launch? As a Vita owner, I'd definitely hold back after how Sony's support for that turned out.
Also, PSP played near PS2 quality games, PS Vita played near PS3 quality games, shouldn't the next Playstation handheld be aiming for near PS5 quality?
the sadest thing on vita support for me was the removal of Close? The app that let you see local players and what they were playing. i made friends back in the day for co op that way lol.
I think it was privacy breaching? such a shame.
Vita had so much promise, I wonder what it would have taken for Sony to have been more supportive. GTA: San Andreas Stories would have probably brought more sales alone, if they could have gotten that. I was disappointed we never really got anything on the same level as Killzone: Mercenary after that game, which looked amazing running on the Killzone 3 engine. Would have loved to see new entries of PS IP like Infamous, God of War etc, Sony really dropped the ball and using proprietary memory cards that were ridiculously priced didn't help, if they were smart, they'd have sold them cheaper since they were mainly being used to store stuff people were paying for in their store anyway, lol.
The point would be that it plays PS4 games, PS4 is still getting games constantly.
Everyone here including yourself presumably already has a library of games to play on this.
The success of the Portal shows the value of not needing to have a separate game library.
@Skuletor,
Why not? The PS5 plays PS4 games fine (because the tech is similar), one could assume that if Sony is using AMD hardware, then they will probably have native PS4 support.
Honestly the amount of games you could get on these cards was better value than what the switch was offering per cartidge. Cartridges got no slack from these same people.
The games for vita were very cheap, 30 dollars on average in store.
I'm still salty about the proprietary memory card prices, I don't remember those ever getting cheap.
I mean how mich more support does the PS4 really need. It's not a new system... just a portable PS4. There are over 10 000 PS4 games available. Sony doesn't need to support it.
There are some crazy rumors out there but we don't have the technology to run a Series S in Portal mode let alone a PS5.
How many people that have a physical PS4 library will be willing to buy their games again to download these rumoured PS4 games to this rumoured portable? Until it gets officially revealed, none of us really know how this thing will operate but I will point out, Sony usually sell their consoles at low profit with the intention of making more money later in software sales. People that will be mostly playing games they already own, won't be their largest target market, most likely.
Also, hopefully it would have it's own exclusives to highlight the portables strengths too and not just games from a last gen system
Even if we did have the technology, imagine how terrible the battery life would be! You'd have to be more tethered to a power outlet than any of the other PC handhelds.
Yeah same here. The way they handled the Vita has left me burned. I don't trust them to give a handheld the support it needs and so I'll not buy it at launch. I need to see their commitment first.
No, I don't think the technology would be near enough to give us PS5 quality, not unless you're okay with 20 mins battery life (then there's heat dissipation and weight to think of too). I feel like that's the mistakes PC handhelds like Rog Ally, MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go make, they over power the Steam Deck, but you pay for it in battery life, I'd rather have more battery life when I'm using a handheld.
To be fair though, with the race to beat climate change/reach net-zero, they're developing new battery tech all the time, maybe in a few years we could have a battery that adds a stupid amount of playtime to a powerful handheld.
Supports PS4 games...yet Sony doesn't release PS4 games. So I can play Helldivers 2 on my Steam Deck but not on this thing? Odd.
Exactly. Sony would have to make enough on hardware sales alone to cover the cost of developing this thing, because people might just be playing old games they already own. It would be neat to go back and play some of those old PS4 PSN free games I never got to, but that wouldn't help PS make more money. Maybe it would be worth it for them to lock more people into PSN, but I'm dubious.
For new games I assume they'd have to include Portal functionality to stream, but that's suboptimal for me
They probably just mean it's similar power wise, so there's a chance they'd still port it. I mean look at the Switch, it got games like Doom Eternal running in it, albeit at 30fps
PsVitara!
Joke aside, that can be a very nice move. Play PS4,3,2 and 1 games and revive the Vita library... That sounds good.
They would need to commit to rereleasing psp,ps1 and ps2 titles and history has shown that they'd rather not.
They promised us a PS Classic catalogue, so far its selection is underwhelming small, they also let the Vita die off pretty quickly, I wouldn't be quick to jump on this until I see how much commitment they're willing to make.
if it can run ps3 and ps4 games it would be huge, fantastic library of games that you can play nowhere else.
I play Helldivers 2 on my PSPortal and it runs really good. I think this device will play PS4 games and PS5 games via Stream.
I want to be optimistic... But seeing how they support PSVR2... I am incredibly doubtful now :(
If it plays PS5 games with cartridges then I'm all over this, but digital only is a no from me. I own a Deck and buy games on Steam but PSN prices are no match for PC prices.
Can't wait to adopt yet another handheld with overpriced proprietary storage what will surely be abandoned for a third time.
I was just looking at my old PSP the other day and was reminiscing about how much fun I had with it.
Sony didn't support their last handheld. If this is true it's a pass for me, I don't trust them far as supporting another handheld like the Vita.
Sony should tap into the handheld PC market by releasing a device that is able to play newer triple A games as well. Something comparable to a Legion Go or Steam Deck. At some point, last-gen won’t be supported anymore, so they definitely shouldn’t stop at supporting just PS4 games.
I predict it will play PS4 games and most ps5 games after a patch to allow them to run on lower settings abit like the ps5 pro will get one with higher settings on alot of games. As per MLID leak.
control have to be like the PS Portal if they allow this new handheld to remote play PS5 games.
They saw Nintendo crushing them (and entirely swallowing up the Japanese market), as well as the Steam Deck's success along with an ever rising portable/mobile market, and they panicked. I don't see this selling well, especially because the Switch 2 is reportedly performing at PS4 levels when handheld and PS4 Pro when docked (plus upscaling), and that'll most certainly be cheaper and backwards compatible (with GameCube/Wii backwards compatibility most certainly being adding combined with the rest of their virtual console offerings).
Not to mention Sony's history of disrespecting their customers with their horrible Vita support.
This sounds good but Sony will probably ruin it with some kind of proprietary storage device.
That was something that dawned on me after thinking about this for a bit. Can't imagine consumers will be pleased with buying a device that will be immediately inferior to a different product that's less than a year after the Portal came out.
Nah. I don't trust Sony. Don't get me wrong I love my PSP and the Vita is my favourite handheld of all time and I still own my launch day PSP and Vita, but after the way Sony left the Vita to die, I won't be getting any handheld they produce at launch again. First I want to see that they are dedicated to supporting it properly before I dive in.
Well... for a 2025 launch, two years before PS6... for a 399$/499$ launch selling price (without loss for unit sold), Sony could get:
CPU/GPU: AMD Z1 Extreme based RDNA3+ downclocked 2,13/2,23/3,5/4,26 GHz
RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5X/LPCAMM2 7500MT/s
Battery: 4370 mAh (<4h in turbo mode/<8h normal/emu mode, Fast bidirectional charge)
Screen: FullHD 120Hz FSR
Storage: 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVME (Final Fantasy Edition 1TB)/Up to 8TB
USB4 Version 2.0 (4K/8K output compatible)
PSVR 2 direct compatibility
Other: HPRX/FSR 3.1, PS5/PS4 haptic compatibility, WiFi7, Bluetooth 5.4, 5G (optional)
I think a lot of people are jumping the gun here, the big question is, will Sony support it long enough to get a decent foothold? They let the Vita die off pretty quickly, and the PSP didn't really exceed outside of Asia, I don't regret buying both handhelds, but I wouldn't be quick to jump on a new Playstation handheld.
Long time gamer here that has supported everything sony. Knowing Sony, they'll do something that just turns off gamers to the point where this won't sell and then be considered a failure. They'll put in some over priced proprietary memory card that you can only buy on Thursdays or some archaic charging port akin to a cars jumper cable... I might support it, but I'm pretty happy with remote play on my Logitech G Cloud.
Wooo they gots Die Hard Trilogy in there! :D. good list. how about Dave Mirra BMX or Driver.
This is such an awesome idea! I forgot all about the Die Hard game. I also played the hell out of Destruction Derby 2. Those old car physics were awesome. You forgot one game that NEEDS to be on this list though.....DRIVER!
Playstation was my favorite system for its first two generations and man, what an awesome exclusive library. Spyro, Castlevania, Crash, what a fun system.
