Let's just admit that the Wii U is a dead console

MWEB GameZone writes: "Despite the fact that the Wii U is a massively entertaining piece of tech, it's undeniable that the larger public just isn't interested in it. In fact, it wouldn't be unfair to say that the Wii U is a dead console."

For a dead console, it sure has a great list of games on the way... >_>

Hoffmann3719d ago

A really..small list of great games though.

Concertoine3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

They already have titles announced leading into 2016. They have no studios that have been free long enough to make games for new hardware. Even then we still have

Yarn Yoshi
Zelda
Xenoblade X
SMT x FE
Fatal Frame
Devil's Third
Splatoon
Mario Maker
Those Project games
Star Fox

Plus anything announced at E3. Thats no small list. Im getting seriously sick of this doom fetish people with no common sense or interest in the Wii u are constantly flexing.

This might warrant a blog. Theres so many reasons why nintendo would stand to lose by ditching the wii u and releasing a new console, its not even funny.

XB1_PS43719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

Lol, and people are agreeing with you. Nintendo is never short of great games.

@Disagrees
Stop being such pansies, tell me how I'm wrong. I would LOVE to hear how Nintendo has no games coming.

1nsomniac3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

To be fair out of that list the general public are only really going to be interested in 2 of those games, 3 at a push. So that's not a great list!

I would love more & better games coming to the Wii U but realistically they're not. I considered picking up a Wii U for Christmas & changed my mind at the last second deciding that I would wait & see what further comes out for it. Since then to be perfectly honest I've only just remembered that I wanted one. I haven't seen or even heard anything what-so-ever to do with Nintendo as a whole never mind the Wii U since before Christmas. In fact I'm not even sure they're still being sold in the UK. They obviously must be but thinking about it the last time I probably seen a Wii U on shelves was maybe November & games maybe even last September.

XB1_PS43719d ago

@1nsomniac

What kind of nonsense? 2-3 of those games?

I see at least 6.

Concertoine3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

@1somniac

That's beside the point. I didnt say these games would sell the wii u, but that they amount to a solid bunch of games. I really wish these phantom disagrees would prove me wrong. Tell me how nintendo will sell a new console when:

Retro Studios only just finished a game in 2014. Rumors say they're working on another Wii U game, whatever thats worth.

EAD 2 only just finished Captain Toad a few months ago.

Ndcube only just finished MP10.

Monolith only just finished Xenoblade, apparently DLC is on the way.

Sora/HAL are still doing DLC for smash.

EAD 1 is still doing DLC for Mario Kart 8.

EAD 4 is still making Mario Maker.

EAD 5 is making Star Fox.

Intelligent Systems is making Code Name Steam and Fire Emblem If

All of their biggest studios are either just wrapping up projects or still working on them. I understand there are multiple teams, but the B team isnt going to get out a system selling game on new hardware by 2016. Prove me wrong, stop blindly hitting disagree.

dillydadally3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

Lol, that's funny, especially since the exact opposite is true. The Wii U is the only console that actually is releasing any games I actually want to play. It's the biggest reason everyone I know that actually own multiple consoles say they end up playing their Wii U the most (even Angry Joe who has a beef with them right now admitted that). The amount of quality games that I actually want to play coming out for XBOX One and PS4 is pathetic and the biggest problem with this generation. GameSpot even did a feature story on where are all the good games this generation compared to past generations. On the other hand, the Wii u is chock full of games with a ton of really exciting exclusives on the horizon.

Griever3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

Whenever someone points out Nintendo or Wii U's failings, Nintendo fans immediately take it personally. They start giving personal examples like "it is not dead to ME" or "the games are great to ME." When will you guys get it that this is not about YOU and the handful of people like you. This is about the whole market and the total number of potential customers! When someone says Wii U is dead or failure, he is talking about its sales and growth. It does not matters how good the games are to YOU if people do not like them and buy. Similarly, the metacritic averages often boasted by Nintendo fans are useless to Nintendo if nobody buys those games. It is all about sales and not your feelings and love for Nintendo.

Wii U is the worst-selling Nintendo console in history, it has no third party support, it has a handful of games compared to the rivals and it has already exhausted its supply of major games. There are no chances for growth and improving sales. None of the games coming in the future except Zelda are likely to boost hardware sales. The console has no ammo left or a future. The successor has already been announced even if isn't coming right now. Even Nintendo has given up on the console and are satisfied with Wii U as just a secondary console. For these reasons console is considered dead.

@Concertoine

When someone says Wii U has no games he does not means it in an absolute/literal sense. It only means that it does not has any games big or important enough that can make a difference in consumer interest and hardware sales. Why do you guys immediately take it literally and compile a list of niche commercial flops to prove your point? Those games will come and go and nobody will notice except you guys. That is the whole point when someone says Wii U has no games coming.

StarLord_Who3719d ago

Since when did longer list = better games?

Nintendo games have smashed all other exclusives in terms of review score so better is the only asjective you can use.

Concertoine3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

@Griefer

I don't think you took the time to understand why i compiled that list. I never said that these games would sell the system, or even that they'd all be good. I never said Wii U wasnt a failure, it is, even if i like the games. I made the list to show Nintendo is still supporting the platform for the forseeable future. Whether or not you think games you won't play on a system you don't own will be any good or sell any good is totally irrelevant to my point.

There's all this talk of how the NX is out in 2016, Zelda delayed for NX when it doesnt make a lick of sense. That's why i compiled both lists. And im still waiting for the NX trolls to prove me wrong.

Gority3719d ago

@Concertoine

For me Zelda, Star Fox, and Xenoblade X are the only games I'm interested. The one I'm interested in the most is Xenoblade X.

So for me that's 2 games this year and 1 game next year depending when star fox comes out.

That's not a dead console, but it's a dying console. Even for you if you get the games on your list, 9 games over a two year period? That's still a dying console. Obviously more games will be announced but that's still a small list.

Compare that to the X1/PS4 and leaving out exclusives you have:

Batman Arkham Knight
The Witcher 3
Rainbox Six Siege
Mortal Kombat X
Project Cars
Assassin's Creed
The Division
Just Cause 3
Final Fantasy XV
KH3
and on and on....

Not saying Nintendo is stopping support on their console, but the lineup is slim pickings. Has it had the best exclusive lineup this gen? sure. Nintendo consoles always do. But third party is almost nonexistent. That's why most people buy a Wii U to supplement their current lineup on another platform, whether that's PC/PS4/X1.

highly subjective, i for one am dying to play xenoblade and zelda, but fact remains the console has ha nothing worthwhile since smash released last year.2 or 3 good games a year simply isnt enough
id say its dead because no one other than nintendo is supporting it and its exhausted most of its own ips already.
sure if it got all 3rd party games with the 3 or so great exclusives, then, youd have had a point but i for one am open to playing games that arent exactly goty as well.quality and quantity should be in balance.say 1 absolute masterpiece releases every 2 years but its all it gets, would it still be worth it?

since jan ive already bought more games than wii u will get the entire year.and its not that i have all the time in the world. i just prefer to play different games at different times.regardless of how big my backlog is ,playing just 1 game for all these months would be far worse if i dont many games, i wont go out and buy them.as simple as that, but choice is never a bad thing

lord zaid3719d ago

This is true. But none of those games are going to create new sales for the console. The Wii U is brilliant. I state it in the article and I've spoken about its excellence in the past. But public isn't interested and that is a shame

GordonKnight3719d ago

It's a shame the Wii U wasn't received better by the mainstream. This is what Nintendo is non-mainstream gaming. Even their shooter game is completely different from any shooter game. Don't get me wrong, I love my PS4 & X1. They are not the problem it's third party companies jumping on every hot idea in gaming. It's just like reality TV shows. Once a type of reality shows hits it big then there are 10 shows just like it.

Foraoise3719d ago

I love my Wii U. AND MY PS4. But think about it without bias. The PS4 has just as many games on the way >.>

GordonKnight3719d ago

I wish more people did. I'm a share holder.

Is the controller any good on that system?

morganfell3719d ago

@ActiveMessiah,

I purchased a Wii U last year but even this from the article should concern owners:

"You look at the NX announcement, the Legend of Zelda delay and then you consider the fact that the most recent Nintendo Direct didn't mention a single new Wii U game; you put those facts together and it's clear Nintendo has switched focus."

Activemessiah3719d ago

Regarding Zelda, I think it will be released on the Wii U then a remastered version to launch NX.

GordonKnight3719d ago

Nothing is clear with Nintendo. Except they make decisions that the mainstream is against.

pcz3719d ago (Edited 3719d ago )

the story of the wiiu

back when it first came out it was an exciting prospect because it had all the potential to be a great console, but nintendo drip fed the games, third party support was unconvincing and so it all lost momentum.

it just wasnt selling, and so people started to place their bets on the big games such as mario kart 8 and smash bros turning things around. those games arrived with critical acclaim, but the wiiu was still flat-lining.

with all hope now lost for the wiiu being a commercial success, people just hoped nintendo would continue supporting the console, which they have. games like beyonetta and hyrule warriors prove nintendo are still showing signs of brain activity, although its few and far between.

games such as xenoblade and the new fire emblem go that bit further in proving nintendo still do have what it takes, but at the same time they delay what could have been a seriously life saver to the wiiu- zelda.

this move may have been the final nail in the coffin for the wiiu. a nail which may very well have been deliberately hammered in by nintendo, since they chose to announce their new console, the NX at e3, instead of giving zelda the spotlight.

at this point, any surprises they have in store for wiiu at e3 will be little more than a consolation for those who unfortunately bought a wiiu. the games coming from this point forward will go towards building a legacy for the wiiu that will make it a respectable console among gamers, but in the large scale of things, ie its position in a competitive games market- it is dead.

Shnazzyone3719d ago

More great games than it's alive competitors it would seem. If Wii U is dead, it just proves that modern gamers have bad taste in games I guess.

Dead? Nope. Not selling as well as the PS4. Likely.

badz1493719d ago

Likely? LOL I don't think you understand the meaning of that word.

leahcim3719d ago

at least for me yes.

Until X arrives.

KryptoniteTail3719d ago

It's not dead, just on life support like Vita. Nintendo is focusing on NX now. They're just saving face and going through the motions with the Wii U.

Hopefully Vita 2 & NX get the spotlight at E3.

Neonridr3719d ago

neither will have a showing at this E3. Nintendo still has to show off Zelda, Xenoblade X, Star Fox, maybe Retro's next project...

NX won't even be mentioned until next year.

KryptoniteTail3718d ago

Yes, it will be mentioned. They'd be fool not to keep their momentum going off that announcement; they did it to bring stocks up, so more information will possibly help with that.

Gority3719d ago

I wouldn't count on a Vita 2 friend.

KryptoniteTail3718d ago

Realistically, I guess not, but at least a "New 3DS" type of deal. Either way, I'll keep being vocal about wanting it!

MegaRay3719d ago

Nintendo and Sony cant just abandon WiiU and Vita, and expect people to support their new console/handheld. Unless they (Sony/Nintendo) want to do the same mistake Sega did long time ago.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling the PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv726d ago (Edited 6d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX6d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK6d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog6d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Congratulations Nintendo on finding the happy medium between their weak console and their invincible handheld plus learning from Sony and clearly defining the new console from the old unlike their Wii and Wii U just add a higher number simple yet effective 👍👍

victorMaje7d ago

Are people that keen on $90 games?
Is it true some remasters will also be $90?

DankSinatra7d ago

Tell me you don't research without telling me you don't research.

victorMaje6d ago

Nope. I didn’t research, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles and I had read on here something about $90 games on switch 2, so I guess it’s good now, people can calm down. Have a nice day :)

1nsomniac6d ago

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex6d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje6d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Sgt_Slaughter5d ago

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire867d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos7d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire866d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr6d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire865d ago

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos7d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker6d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg6d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx37d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS37d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.
