The huge misconception regarding remasters this generation

With the announcement of the God of War III remaster, there's a lot of misconceptions regarding these recent remaster releases that we're going to try and tackle today.

The major misconception is regarding the current lack of any console selling exclusives, and somehow the release of remasters slowing down progress on the development of legitimate new releases.

To keep things short, no, remasters are not slowing down the release of successful console exclusive releases.

I didn't play Borderlands 2 or God of War 3. I am going to be playing both now. Also I would love the Mass Effect series and Uncharted series remastered. This isn't a bad thing.

garos823747d ago

i think thats a fair thing for people who haven't played the series.

I know a few people who didn't get the chance to play shadow of the collosus on PS2 and were happy to pick it up and experience it ps3

Heyxyz3747d ago

It's just simple business, if there's a market for something someone will sell it. Whether you love or hate remasters you can't deny that they're selling, and as long as they're selling they'll still be made.

dreamed3747d ago

There only selling coz thats all there is,talk about being tricked into a purchase,if i knew then what i know now i would never have brought x1& ps4,why spend cash twice, this gen is a joke.....geez mgs5 had better be good or both systems will be going down the pawn shop.

Baka-akaB3746d ago

You're one being a joke . There was a preliminary list of what was going to be released in 2014-2015 for those consoles and delay and surprise hits aside , the reality didnt deviate much from that list . Instead of getting clues weither or not those games would please you , you purchased those consoles anyway ?

Revolver_X_3746d ago

@Dreamed

You sound like 90% of the ppl on these forums. Uninformed consumer.

sloth33953747d ago

its the reason there wasn't backwards compatibility so they could sell the same game again for more money

3747d ago
r2oB3747d ago

Is that the same thing you told yourself last gen when you didn't buy a backwards compatible ps3 because of its price? The reason there is no backwards compatibility is because people aren't willing to pay for it, simple as that. Sony tried it last gen and consumers didn't like the idea of paying for something extra.

sloth33953747d ago

I paid for one that had backwards compatibility so I could play my PS2 games

Majin-vegeta3747d ago

Or you know the whole completely different ARCH both systems have??Cell vs X86 or whatever it's called.

DragonKnight3747d ago (Edited 3747d ago )

I know that remasters are space fillers. Simple as that. God of War 3 is coming out in time for the summer lull, but it doesn't begin to scratch Sony's reliance this gen thus far on remasters. Quite frankly it's disappointing. I didn't buy a PS4 so I could play PS3 games with some texture touch ups, an upped framerate, or stability fixes all in a GOTY edition game that still will cost me $80 for a physical copy after taxes. I bought a PS4 to play PS4 games.

"But what about the people that didn't own a PS3"

Well what about the people who didn't own a Wii, or an Xbox 360, or a PS2, or a Gamecube, or a Dreamcast, or an Xbox, or a Sega Saturn, or a PS1, or a N64 and so on and so on? That's the thing you know. You don't buy the system, you don't get to play the games.

Why aren't we seeing PC games being remastered on consoles. Tons of old games that could easily be made to run on consoles. You have to buy a PC to play those and no one is saying anything about that.

It's laziness, or greed, or even pointless busy work for an easy cash grab. It isn't new current gen games being released, which is what new consoles are for. Hell, wasn't PSNow made for just this kind of thing? What's the point of even having PSNow if you're just going to re-release the games as HD remasters anyway? Are you trying to kill your own service before it's even really started Sony?

generic-user-name3747d ago

The cool thing is that nobody puts a gun to your head and forces you to buy any remasters which is pretty decent of Sony.

"it doesn't begin to scratch Sony's reliance this gen thus far on remasters."

You mean that one single title? TLoU? Shall we ignore new IPs? Let's ignore Driveclub and The Order and Bloodborne and Until Dawn and so on shall we?

"That's the thing you know. You don't buy the system, you don't get to play the games."

...unless they make remasters which allow you to buy those games and bring joy to the people who missed out.

DragonKnight3746d ago

"The cool thing is that nobody puts a gun to your head and forces you to buy any remasters which is pretty decent of Sony."

Hey what do you know, a generic argument from someone with a generic user name. Who'd have guessed.

"You mean that one single title? TLoU? Shall we ignore new IPs? Let's ignore Driveclub and The Order and Bloodborne and Until Dawn and so on shall we?"

Oh wait, I mean 2 generic arguments.

"...unless they make remasters which allow you to buy those games and bring joy to the people who missed out."

And complacency as well? Damn, these companies can do anything and you'll lap it up immediately won't you?

generic-user-name3746d ago

@DragonKnight

If you couldn't argue against my valid points, instead opting to call them generic and use that as a flimsy shield, then don't waste everybody's time by replying in the first place.

DragonKnight3746d ago

Your points aren't worth arguing. They are standard counter arguments used any time someone has a problem with remasters. If you want answers to your claims, find another remaster article and read those replies, or even just read the comments here. I've heard your comments so many times being made by other people, I'm tired of repeating myself.

JasonKCK3747d ago

"Why aren't we seeing PC games being remastered on consoles. Tons of old games that could easily be made to run on consoles. You have to buy a PC to play those and no one is saying anything about that."

Agree with that ^^^ and this "It's laziness, or greed, or even pointless busy work for an easy cash grab."

Pennywise1383746d ago

Dragon knight I couldn't agree more. I'm all for remakes but these so called "remasters" are getting old. The ps3 isn't even dead yet so its not like these games aren't still easily available. As I mentioned before it really is showing me just what a small upgrade this new generation of systems are.

Spotie3746d ago

Such an odd conversation, where one person ignores legitimate rebuttals. If you say his justifications are standard, so, too, are your reasons food not liking them.

The uproar over remasters is silly. Don't buy them if you don't like them. They're not for you, anyway. They're not really even for me. But they still have a market.

That's all they need. Just like any other game.

Revolver_X_3746d ago (Edited 3746d ago )

Its odd that people can show disdain for remasters, but get up in arms over answers they don't want to hear. As if their complaints are any more valid. Until you can prove a remaster has legitimately stopped development of a new IP, its nothing other then don't buy it. The fact is if PS4's new IP offerings haven't satisfied you then maybe PS4 isn't the ecosystem for you.

This silly notion of old PC games remade on PS4, which ones? Wheres the market, the interest? Out side of triple A games on steam, it's indies, MOBAs, and Strategy games. Indies a lot of times cant afford the transition. MOBA's and strategy games are just not doable with controllers.

The funny thing is, all those bubbles you have, and you never really add anything to the conversation.

DragonKnight3746d ago

Who said anything about "stopping development of a new IP."

But that's an interesting point. Assume that the studio making the remaster isn't the size of a Sony Santa Monica or an Ubisoft. How many remasters are those smaller studios making? None. Why? Because it would deter them from making newer IPs now wouldn't it? All projects cost man hours. Man hours that could be put to use in new IPs. By basic common sense we can clearly see that a person who is working on a remaster is a person who is not working on a new IP. There's your "proof" right there.

I love you defenders of pointless busy work and cash grabs. Your arguments are so self-involved and self-motivated yet you can't even see it.

freshslicepizza3745d ago (Edited 3745d ago )

"I love you defenders of pointless busy work and cash grabs. Your arguments are so self-involved and self-motivated yet you can't even see it."

really? all of your counter arguments are "i don't want them" or "i don't think they should be made"

all self-serving with no grasp at the total picture. revenue from these remasters can go into production of new games. furthermore they add interest since not everyone has played these games. do you ever stop to think that sony stumbled on the ps3 but managed to get their mojo back with the ps4? that means they likely got nintendo and xbox gamers to buy into the playstation brand that were not there before. which translates into more interest into these franchises.

i also haven't heard one good counter-argument as to why we support upgrades to our movie collections but whine till the cows come home when it's to do with games being remastered and how they are just a cash cow. there is absolutely nothing to whine about, your older versions are still there to play if you don't want to upgrade.

the onus is not on us to be defenders because many of us don't take issue with them making remasters because logical people have a simple answer. buy or don't buy. the onus is on people like you because its your problem and there's nothing you can do about it because you can't provide any proof they are bad in the first place.

Personally, I'd rank Pacific Rift in my top 10. It's the best of the series.

badz149111d ago

We desperately need Motorstorm back. Evolution is no more though and this makes me sad

Cacabunga111d ago

Sly Thieves in Time
Stay the Party
Portal 2
Dj Hero
Demon’s Souls
God of war Ascension

rudero111d ago

2 of those games got railed through the “gaming media” during release.
Sly and god of war.
Both of which were fantastic games.

Cacabunga111d ago

Ascension is VERY underrated. Remake please!

Venoxn4g111d ago

Decent list.. I would put the Castle Crashers as well..

1Victor111d ago

Yes it’s a decent list of popular games with a heavy hand on FPS and no Warhawk or Starhawk 2 of the best games (not sale wise) on ps3.
I would buy a Starhawk again even if it didn’t have a graphics upgrade hell I would even take a new one with micro transactions 😱🤯

Profchaos111d ago

I've noticed a recent nostalgia for the PS3 and I don't get it for me it's been my least favourite generation to date and I've been gaming since the NES I just feel like the ambition of the developers outweighed the capabilities of the consoles so I remember lots of games running in the lower end of 20fps range and I remember for the first time ever actually disliking the duelshock 3 and it's curved triggers

Sure there were some standouts and great games but that's the only gen I switched entirely to PC gaming

darthv72111d ago

Maybe the recent nostalgia is because pretty much all of its games are trapped on that console. People want to play them on more modern hardware. hell... if XB can do it then so can Sony. there are competent emulators out there that can run on PS4/5 hardware but Sony just wont let them become official... why is that?

If we are talking least favorite generations (personally) then this one is certainly mine. i had more fun playing 8th, 7th and 6th gen stuff than 9th. And it isnt like i dont have access to do so... the heavy hitters just havent shown up anywhere close to those previous gens. The few here and there just doesnt cut it compared to the likes of constant good games that showed up in 6th, 7th and 8th gen. hell.... I'll even throw in 5th gen has been better than this one.

Profchaos111d ago

I tend to agree there's lots of amazing games locked to the PS3 like GTA IV or mgs 4 but then again my issue was never with the content the PS3 had but rather it's performance many other people have said the PS3 felt like it couldn't walk and chew bubblegum at the same time using PSN and downloading a game could take a few minutes to just start a download.

I typically don't worry all that much about performance I've never had a problem with games that run at 30 but games like crysis 2, Skyrim are good examples where the performance was so unstable you would never even touch the top of the frame cap and the hitching was worse than say Goldeneye on the n64

I think emulation is more than possible on the ps5 though it's just that Sony has no incentive to rush it's development it will likely be a ps6 feature if it ever happens at all.

But yeah the 9th gen has been so bad from a content perspective thats a given I see constant articles where people are frequently expressing their disappointment around the industry as a whole right now to much live service competition that sinks longstanding studios and consumes Devs time less ambition and games cost so much to make they have to play it safe.

The 5th gen was easily better than the 9th we had some all time greats crash, Spyro, Tony hawk, mgs, Mario,64, Goldeneye, Mario kart 64 the list goes on. The 5th gave us a new dimension and I remember being blown away by how much more open gaming had become the 4th gen with the mega drive and SNES was great and very easy to still revisit some of the greatest games of all time came out like earthbound, secret of mana, sonic , Mario world etc but saving our games was still not a standard function or a given so gaming was still evolving but it was very impressive to see some of the tricks Devs used like dithering to give us new experiences those earlier gens limitations bred innovation.

Michiel1989111d ago

if XB can do it so can sony? I didn't know xbox had a cell processor in their older consoles, that's the reason why ps3 was so cool, but also the reason why games are hostage there and no, xbox did nothing similar even though their backward compatbility is good, they always had a similar architecture to their consoles.

darthv72110d ago

Sorry Michael... I guess you missed the obvious part where i said there are already emulators out that do this. and that is what XB is doing... emulators for OG and 360 games. Its why the full slate is not BC on XBO/Series.

14 Years Later, God of War 3 Still Has The Best Boss Fights

Kratos' journey in God of War 3 was an angry rampage against the Greek Gods, resulting in some of the best boss battles in gaming.

They went from amazing, huge scale bosses to shirtless Norse people with tattoos...

The only good boss in the new god of war was the mountain dragon.

xHeavYx265d ago

I like the new GOW games, but I do feel that the brutality of the games were toned down way too much in favor for (what some people may call) heartwarming stories. I think both things could co-exist, but if I had to choose, I'd rather have the brutality back.

Goodguy01265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Agreed. I... barely even remember any of the bosses in Ragnarok even lol. Story bosses only, optionals excluded. Kinda wish Kratos was still an all brutal angry man that way we do go after pretty much all the gods in each mythology. New gow, you feel bad about them...

ravens52265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

I have to agree. Some of the best boss fights. Felt so good to get a new weapon when you beat em. The Hades fight and Hercules fight were dope. The Poseidon fight was fire especially when you went first person. Damn I want to play it over. Sadly all I have is 3 and the new ones. That's why I want a remaster of the first two.

Levii_92265d ago

And we will never.. EVER, get an insane awesome game like this ever again (at least not directly from SSM and Sony)

Hey do you remember those Atreus sections and that Angrboda section where you collect fruit or whatever the f was happening? No. You remember when Kratos ripped off Helios’s head just to use as a flashlight. You remember when he chopped of Hermes’s legs to just so use his boots and you remember the Aphrodite section, when he was gutting Centaurus’s with guts spilling out and when he tied a half naked girl to the gate mechanism pulley thing or whatever it’s called just so she can hold the heavy gate by being mangled into a bloody mess. Good times. 😂

victorMaje265d ago

Mark my words, maybe not God of War, maybe not SSM, but a few years from now, the story will be one of vengeance, the protagonist will be there, the gameplay will meet the expectations, and the right team will be put together, it will feel so refreshing again, and we will rejoice. It’s inevitable.

jambola265d ago

I remember it slightly more fondly because with only 2 characters it was nice to have less yapping and mimir not yelling forced tutorials at me

mkis007265d ago

I like mimir though. He gives more lore for this universe, because God of war has its own lore somewhat separate from actual Norse myth.

jambola264d ago

@mkis007
I'm ok with mimir in cutscenes
I just mean constant yapping and yelling in battle mostly

mkis007265d ago

I do love the hades fight...so fricken brutal how you bash him into the ceiling with his own weapons over and over.

I’ve lived with depression for years, and I can confirm it’s so much more than just feeling sad. It’s the numbness, the exhaustion, the constant mental battle just to get through the day. What helped me, oddly enough, was focusing on small tasks — like improving my living space. I know it sounds random, but researching things like home comfort gave me a sense of control. I even stumbled across this site about ductless mini-split systems: https://mytunbridgewells.co... . It gave me a distraction and a goal — making my space feel warmer, both physically and emotionally. Sometimes healing starts with the smallest, most unexpected steps.
