[rumor] Phoenix: code name for the future Xbox prototype

According to our sources, Microsoft has already put a code name on its future Xbox prototype for the developers : it's Phoenix. We still don't have any technical specs for the moment, but the Phoenix is said to be a real evolution compared to the Xbox 360. Some studios in North of America have already begun projects on this prototype. We hope to learn more about this soon.

A) This would kick Major ass because I am from Phoenix, Arizona.
B) It would be fitting if they learned from their mistakes and built a bullet-proof system after going down in flames with the horrible hardware of the 360.
C)It's a shame codenames never become the final product name, lol. Because I happen to like it. Cool name and it almost pokes fun at themselves in a way and (Hopefully) shows the direction they are moving in.

ALL!!!! get that first word? ALL!!! companies including sony and nintendo begin work on there next system almost immediately after there newest console releases. They don't design it, build it and let it sit until the release day, lol, they test theory's, play with idea's and do random experiments with various idea's to get a sense of where to actually go, what direction with the hardware for when it does get built.

If the system come out by 2012 and that seems to be a general consensus, they wont solidify an actual build of the system until 7 or 8 months before it's actual production so early 2012 it should then be set in stone.
So relax there's no new system on it's way yet.

It looks like M$ is just throwing these systems out every 4 years, losing billions in the process, just so they can control the entire market in the end. Its actually ingenius because they know Sony and Nintendo don't have the funds to keep pace with them. They'll just outspend them until they leave the market. Then M$ will monopolize the console market to the point where no other company will ever be able gain a reasonable foothold in it. Just like they did in the PC market with Windows. It will cost them billions in the beginning but once they gain absolute control of the market, they will bring in billions. They will turn the Xbox into the next Windows OS cashcow. In the future, if you want to play games, your only choice will be an Xbox.

i don´t see a prob on this, almost every car manufacteur change theirs model from 4 to 4 years and improve on the last one, the TV manufacteurs always change their models, pc manuf the same, graphic cards manuf even more and we see the outstanding level of the graphic cards this days, and with promess to largely improve. So for the consoles i don´t say 4 years but 5 or 6 years and change the consoles it´s not that bad. New and improved tecnology.

Well, the Xbox 360 will most likely be in the middle of it's lifecycle this Fall, so I'm not surprised if this news does indeed turn out to be true. After the Original Xbox, I think that Microsoft knew that they wouldn't be competitive against Sony or Nintendo if they released the Xbox 360 the same year, so they want to start getting a year head start with their newer consoles.

makes sense to me, i seem to remember sometime ago now an MS official (cant remember who now getting old im afraid) said the 360 lifespan would be 4-5yrs before the next console would be out.

I think that a bit strange personally however if she (i seem to remember it being a woman) had said 4-5yrs before the next console would be announced i could agree.

Hmmm, well, my personal opinion is that we will see this new xbox at the end of 09 beginning of 10, with a release of late 10 early 11 especially seeing as the PS3 is gaining ground pretty quick these days. Would kinda fit in with MS strategy and would further increase the gap between Sony and MS time line wise. Would give them a 2-3yr jump on the ps4, but then the PS4 would have a 1-2yr jump on Xbox cycle.

The best microsoft could do is take it with humour. Phoenix is a nice step in recognizing and capitalizing their past mistakes with a touch of irony and sarcasm :) I hope they do a flawless job with this one.

If they combine rock solid hardware with a nice and self poking ad campaign they should have no worries, people will surely give the next box a fair chance.

To launch a next-gen console only a few years after your competitors launch their current-gen systems. If the Phoenix does come out in 2010, they may actually be more powerful than the PS3 (depends on the CPU, of course) and match it spec for spec. Sort of a dangerous move though since the PS3 will probably be $199~249 by then, and the software library will have matured greatly.
