DirectX 12 Will Boost GPU By Up to 20% According to Phil Spencer

According to Spencer, DirectX 12 will not only improve CPU performance on PC by up to 50% depending on how a game is developed, but it will also improve GPU performance by up to 20%.

I thought it wasnt supposed to do much because of the outdated hardware in the XB1?

GMR_PR3761d ago

20% is a pretty big jump, i didn't think it would do much, I guess i was wrong

christocolus3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

This is AMAZIIIIIING!!!!! Microsoft knew what they were doing all along. Beta Tested In The Future.damn right. Shovel Knight was ported in a day to Xbox One.

Testfire3761d ago

We actually still don't know the real world effects until we start seeing games coming out using those resources.

MasterCornholio3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

@Christ

"Shovel Knight was ported in a day to Xbox One."

That's what I said that the biggest benefit of DX12 would be. Extremely easy ports between PCs and the XB1.

But people laughed at me when I said that.....

@Update

WTF? Phil should just clear this up to avoid confusion and debates.

TomShoe3761d ago

I'll believe it when I see it.

angelusbrz3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

in fact with the math :

a 20% boost to 900p is 1050p.

EDIT: LMAO with the Dislike :

1) learn how to do math, i'm right.

2) Microsoft said themselves by thier official website that the 20% was for PC.

http://news.xbox.com/2015/0...

fanboys are sad.

Cupid_Viper_33761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

I'll barge in even though this is not really my place.

#1. "Update
Update: Due to a misunderstanding caused by an interruption in the livestream, the original article mentioned that the 20% GPU improvement was on Xbox One, but Spencer did not actually explicitly mention a platform."

#2. The guys on the XBox side, have always claimed that even though the PS4 has all these advantages on paper when compared to the XBOX One, that they rarely see any differences when it comes to the games. Given that you guys have been unable to detect 44% of more pixels on screens in favor of the PS4. And an alleged 50% in GPU power in also in favor of the PS4, how will you possible be able to notice a %20 increase in GPU effeciency when you couldn't notice bigger differences before?

So when I'm seeing guys going around and saying how huge an alleged %20 increase would be for XBOX One, it leaves me confused. Because up until today, the 50% GPU advantage of the PS4 "didn't really matter", so how is 20% for the XBOX One now "significant"?

#3. The article I read said "UP TO 20%" meaning that it is not a static number, but something that depends on other factors. Similar to how when retailers are advertising sales, they say up to 65% off, only a few items are ever at 65% off.

I think this will have a bit of backlash because now people are going to be looking for that 20% more power, and I don't it will reveal itself easily. But it will be kind of funny to watch the people who couldn't notice 40%-50% differences before suddenly have the ability to determine 20% differences.

So after today, I guess few can deny that "GAP" between the two consoles ARE significant.

stiggs3761d ago

@angelusbrz

You may want to recheck your math.

GarrusVakarian3761d ago

GMR_PR3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Ok, so Its official the 20% boost its for PC.

"DirectX 12: DirectX 12 enables PC developers to have a new level of power and control and is a single API developers can access across Windows devices. As shown with Fable Legends running on Unreal Engine 4, there has been a 20% improvement in performance. And as announced today, Epic is creating Unreal Tournament using Unreal Engine 4 running on DirectX 12, which sets a new bar for visual fidelity in PC gaming."

http://news.xbox.com/2015/0...

Too good to be true :)

jackanderson19853761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

@gmr while it's mentioned under the PC part, it's reasonable to think that if it's increasing the PC it'll increase the X1 by some amount of performance (also Fable is on X1 aswell)

also mentions across window devices, X1 is a window device technically

LOL. Update. Not Xbox One.

@MasterCornholio

He did. Like 5 times already.

"No". "effect wont be dramatic"

Also, here is the actual source of this.

"DirectX 12: DirectX 12 enables PC....

Unreal Engine 4 running on DirectX 12, which sets a new bar for visual fidelity in PC gaming."

As you see, it says PC. This is just a confirmation that DX12 benefits are for PC only. Otherwise, why go out of the way to just specify PC?

Ask yourself: Are you glad about the update? Happy that the Xbox isn't getting that extra rendering power?

If the answer is "yes" then congratulations! You just learned that you are indeed a fanboy, which is a critical step towards your recovery.

The correct reaction would be disappointment or indifference. If you are celebrating then you should feel quite humiliated by your own inadequacies.

Cupid_Viper_33761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

@ Volkama

"Ask yourself: Are you glad about the update? Happy that the Xbox isn't getting that extra rendering power?"

I won't speak for everyone here, but I'll try to explain myself. I'm not celebrating that XBox is not getting the extra rendering power. But I do rejoice in watching the people who were using this as ammunition against the PS4 eat a bit of crow. In this fasion http://www.hilariousgifs.co...

There were already people on this very thread and Gaf claiming that Mr.X was right after all. And others who before this announcement, swore on their life that the 50% GPU advantage of the PS4 was "insignificant" at best. But now were all shouting from the rooftops about how Significant this supposed 20% boost would be. Yes, I do enjoy watching them flip flop on this issue, as it reveals the underlying bias that not only plagues the community, but the reviewers and journalists in this industry as well.

My only 2 regrets about this turn of events are that genuine Xbox One gamers don't get the supposed 20% boost, (but they still get a bit of a boost). And the biggest one being that this news got shut down too quickly. It didn't allow enough time for IGN, EuroGamer, and the other big and small websites to reveal their agendas in a way that would be obvious for all to see.

It's pretty clear that the GAP matters. The Xbox camp have the inferior product, and judging by how "SIGNIFICANT" you guys thought this 20% increase would be, then I must say that the 50% GPU advantage of the PS4 is almost TRIPPLE that. Once everyone comes to terms with that, we'll take one small step foward, and hopefully we'll start to discuss things that actually matters.

GameNameFame3761d ago

So pretty clear lesson here is this. GPU power do matter.

It just that some people do not like acknowledging it because their console is behind 40 percent in GPU power.

mikeslemonade3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Ok I'm addressing the math here. 20% of 900p is 180p. 180p+900p=1080p. Meaning in theory this only bring the X1 into PS4 current technology.

Or in quicker computation 1.2x900p=1080p

While PS4 is still getting better as well lol

Pogmathoin3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Angelusbrz, very noble to admit you are a saddo. Bubble to you. Terrible though that you apply basic maths to resolution, but you claim to be smart, but clearly not. Exponential..... Google it, or even bing it. Funny the update said he never said X1 but also never said it was not either, then I see the comment about Xbox fanboys pulling the zip up, but since that update, and the explosion of Sony fanboys here since then, I wonder who has the zip down....

GarrusVakarian3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

So not only was the info wrong about the boost being for the X1...but it was actually talking about a 20% boost for Fable Legends specifically.

Lmfao.

So many "I told you so" comments from people who have been holding on to that DX12 dream for a year or so now. Only for those hopes and dreams to get shattered by a simple misunderstanding. XD Man, I've never seen a better example of people eating crow.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the regular Xbox fanboys on here delete their accounts and never return. This must be devastatingly embarrassing to them. I bet MorePowerOfGreen (RIP) is turning in his grave right now. XD

3-4-53761d ago

I was expecting 5% boost at most, and that would have been awesome.

20% = a possible significant / noticeable amount.

I'm guessing maybe with better lighting or something.

Don't know enough about it though.

AngelicIceDiamond3761d ago

Well I wasn't expecting a graphics boost. Because they made it pretty clear the graphics won't get boosted. Just CPU side of things.

I'm pleasantly surprised.

jhoward5853761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

You're right, 20% increase in computation can be used in number of ways; but that depends on how devs use that power.

The creativity on how a game get optimized are much greater than before, with Dx12 of course.

Ex: I'm guessing gears 4 is going to go way beyond most gamers expectation because the devs have more light source/shadowing to work with.

EX: a devs can put a light source in the background to cast shadows, to darken it up to hide unwanted parts of the scene, or to hide parts of the scene that are low poly/low quality textures.
With that in mind, The X1's reserved power can be used to add more detail to the foreground.

Glad Gears is going back to its dark roots.

lifeisgamesok3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Phil said it will benefit Xbox One and now we know by how much 20%

This is great news

10% from Kinect, 20% from utilizing the correct API built for the console

Albert Penello said before that there's things people don't know about the XB1 this is probably what he was talking about

And the games already look awesome

GarrusVakarian3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

You might wanna read the update. Lol.

And it was "up to" 20%, btw. Neither PC nor X1 will get a concrete number boost from DX12. It will vary from game to game.

*Wipes tear away*

Eonjay3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Well, its certainly better than nothing. And you would be wrong to think that when DX12 is supposed to improve older hardware period. A 50% boost on PC CPU's will do wonders for framerates without needing to upgrade your CPU.

You have one camp saying it would improve nothing. You have another camp saying it is is like a 200% boost. I think 20% is a decent boost.

Edit: Nevermind. The story has changed...

AngelicIceDiamond3761d ago (Edited 3761d ago )

Well it does apparently.

20% is pretty damn decent boost.

All had to do was wait until something was concrete.

Its apparent Phil did not have concrete info on DX12 last year thanks to GDC and he can now address this.

We can now put all this to rest once and for all, DX12 is capable of boosting the graphics of the X1.

Which is astonishing news that I was NOT expecting.

MRMagoo1233761d ago

No one was expecting because it's not true for xbone, and how would a 20 percent boost be a damn decent boost when the gpu on the ps4 is around 40 percent better ? If 40 percent isn't much in xbone fanboys eyes how would 20 percent be ?

Shame for the xbone owners it was all about the pc.

AngelicIceDiamond3761d ago

@Magoo I dunno who your refering to fanboy here. I didn't even mention PS4 in my post so who sounds more like the fanboy now?

I'm just more excited about the news finally being put to rest. And we have concrete info now.

Hey disagree continue to disagree spin, whine, cry about it whatever the sites needs to do to feel better it won't make the news any different.

It's funny how Phil Spencer can say a few words and all the xbox fanboys go into a rabid frenzy with the "told you so's".

We have still yet to see any proof of any of this talk. According to xbox fanboy's the resolution debate would be over by last year. But guess what. Xbone still can't render most games at 1080p.

This year dying light, evolve and The witcher 3 still fail to deliver 1080p on the xbone. Thats just what we know so far.

Update.

Now the article says phil spencer never mentioned xbone. So that makes the xfans look even sillier.

TheRedButterfly3761d ago

That crap goes both ways, and don't pretend like it doesn't. You know how much sony FBs have quoted Spencer on DX12 performance boosts? Guess they're gonna ignore this piece of info though.

rainslacker3760d ago

Moderators are allowed to have opinions. So long as their bias doesn't actually influence their moderation decisions I don't see a problem with that.

I can't say I disagree with him either. The number of people jumping for joy over this news, then the news changing pretty quick making them look foolish, is a great example of how people talk up the wrong things without any verifiable proof just because they want it to be true for whatever reason. And to be fair, it swings both ways, so it's isn't an Xbox fan boy thing, just a fan boy thing in general.

DragonbornZ3760d ago (Edited 3760d ago )

@JqD Yeah too bad as that would've been really nice for xbox. But i mean even before the clarification they were as pessimistic a person could be. Straight up disregarding it, Don matrick gifs, mocking, not even acknowledging it as a good thing for the console, etc, etc. One of the worst communities when they show their colors.

It isn't so much the outdated hardware but more the way the hardware is designed. Consoles are already designed with low level access. Most of DX12s functions are for making the CPU & GPU interact more efficiently but because the XBone's already designed at a hardware level to have maximum interaction between them, it will not benefit much from it. PCs can potentially see a good boost from DX12. XBone you might get a 2-3% increase if that.

Kumomeme3760d ago

it was for pc,also it still depend on the games and the specs

It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer19928d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted8d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast8d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica8d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand1258d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer19928d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts8d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

They've had good output so far. So waiting for those games shouldn't be a problem.

Who cares if they're buy outs of companies or whatever excuse you want to make. They're games that are being distributed to other console. Play the games and enjoy it instead of fanboying or complaining.

ocelot078d ago

They going to be a he best and biggest publisher on Xbox, Playstation and PC next year. They not really said anything about Switch 2 though spite claiming to be big supporters.

If you call making one last Xbox before going full Sega, as Great. Then yea.

Phil Spencer 'Very Excited' About Xbox Handheld Plans For 2025

With ASUS seemingly teasing an Xbox handheld last week, there's been a lot of talk about the device in the days ever since, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also teased something to do with handhelds happening in 2025

I really hope this isn't a windows based device even though coming from MS that's highly unlikely. SteamDeck is much much easier to use and offers a much better user experience than any other handheld device because it's all based on steam app. The Xbox handheld should be based on that because a Windows device with a 7-8 inch screen makes it's difficult to navigate

darthv7274d ago

Coming from Asus... its going to be an Xbox branded ROG Ally.

neutralgamer199274d ago

That's fine but hopefully it will be a Xbox app based instead of windows

VenomUK73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

When the casual market learn that there’s going to be an Xbox branded Asus handheld they will cancel their Nintendo Switch 2 preorders and get the Asus. No it won’t have exclusive games like Super Mario or Zelda or Metroid or Pilot Wings or Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or Donkey Kong or Pokémon or Super Smash Bros - but who cares as it will have access to the entire library of the Steam Store running on Windows. It will also have access to Game Pass with all the modern day classics like Avowed, Hellblade II and Grounded and Pentiment.

I think we all have to acknowledge that after all the criticism of Switch 2 on ResetEra it’s evidence that it will fail to sell and the Asus will outsell it. Dreamcast pushed Sega out of hardware, we all have to accept that the perfect storm of Switch 2 pricing, an Xbox-branded Asus and Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg’s persuasive promotion will likely kill off Switch 2 within a month. AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

FinalFantasyFanatic73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

@VenomUK,
I don't think that even has a remote chance of happening, Nintendo has so much brand loyalty, even with the backlash on their not so great pricing, I still think it's going to sell, Xbox doesn't have as much brand loyalty. Plus, if it's just Xbox branded ROG Ally or something similar, why not just choose a ROG ally or Steam Deck? They can both do everything that an Xbox branded handheld can. If Xbox is going to compete in the world of windows based handhelds, it has so much competition, it's going to struggle.

You're way too optimistic about the Xbox handheld and the demise of the Switch 2, I'm going to predict the opposite and say the Switch 2 will demolish the Xbox handheld in terms of sales/popularity.

S2Killinit73d ago

@VenomUK
Not sure if sarcasm or satire.

VenomUK73d ago

@S2Killinit Satire. I’m not going to hate on people for being excited for a new console. But what is happening in the Xbox community is something wicked, content creators are hyping up the Asus to their audience about how great this thing is, and how it will be more powerful than the Switch 2 and the Steam Store outweighs any advantage the Switch 2 has with its library of games. I don’t believe they believe it but they are grifting. By all means look forward to it but don’t sell it as a Switch 2 PS5 killer.

Steam Os is amazing. By far the best. Can’t imagine MS having an OS that can top it (CERTAINLY not windows)

crazyCoconuts74d ago

Well they're gonna try. They've already stated they've been working on it.

FinalFantasyFanatic73d ago

Windows as is, isn't a great experience for a handheld, they really need to make a dedicated handheld OS, unfortunately they've always been hellbent on making a single product for both PC/touch screen use.

I really can't imagine them making something that stands up to Steam OS, it just works so well.

RaidenBlack73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

This is not their in-house made Xbox handheld for next-gen, which is slated for release in 2027 alongside with the next Xbox console, which might run a version of their usual Xbox-ified OS optimized for the handheld.
This is just a brand collab to produce an Xbox branded updated Asus RoG Ally (Project Kennan), which as usual ships with Windows. Think of it as the 5th main competitor in handheld PC market, after Deck, Legion Go, Ally and MSi Claw (I know others exist, but these are the popular ones).
https://wccftech.com/xbox-h...
And RoG Ally didn't get an update this year like the Legion Go, so this Xbox-Asus one might be that?
Anyways, even with 2025 chip upgrade, the Legion Go underperforms compared to 2023 Ally and 2024 Ally X.

crazyCoconuts74d ago

It can't be anything but Windows if it has the Xbox brand on it. Outside of the politics (which would be a showstopper), SteamOS/Linux can't run GamePass natively due to the crazy protections implemented by the Windows Store.

neutralgamer199274d ago

I am not asking the Xbox handheld to run steam, I just wanted a dedicated Xbox app on the handheld that handles everything from playing games, downloading games, gamepass and most importantly all updates are done from that app. Just a better overall user experience

Having to download multiple different things on a Windows based device becomes really a chore in a smaller screen.

crazyCoconuts74d ago

Having the windows handheld auto launch the existing Xbox Windows app will accomplish everything you mentioned, and I'm sure that's what this will be.
Fact is that MS will need to add a lot into that app to incorporate all the system level controls Steam incorporated into their handheld UI.

OmegaSoldati73d ago

Steam Deck for the win! Switch too.

Profchaos73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

It'll be windows all leaks indicate this is a windows based device with a Xbox skin it will integrate other storefronts because at its core it's windows.

@venom there's is no chance that parents will be buying their kids a rog ally setting up steam and other storefronts over a Nintendo switch 2 at Christmas.

That's a mass amount of hopium there.

Portable PC's in total have barely cracked six million sold the switch 2 will continue to dominate the casual crowd all known about it and news of a switch successor has already started spreading in mainstream media

neutralgamer199273d ago

I think switch 2 will do well but dominate I think we need to wait and see. The prices of the console and games is much more than switch so don't expect parents in this inflation time to spend $600 on 2 games and a console. Since it's Nintendo it should sell but I think we are underpaying the importance of the inflated market

anast74d ago

Every inch of this things is going to be a subservice.

Aloymetal74d ago

And an even bigger flop in the making, it's like they're just throwing crap at the wall and see what sticks or rather find another ''clever'' way to keep squeezing more money from the already miniscule and gullible fanbase. Smfh.

Reaper22_73d ago

Squeezing money. Isn't that what sony is doing with tbe ps5pro. And what about all those remakes and locking some ps4 games to a subscription.

ABizzel173d ago

At first I thought this was a huge mistake on MS part. But after thinking about this more and more, while I still don’t think it’s going to do anything beyond 10 - 20 million in sales, I think that’s exactly what MS and ASUS are expecting and both are okay with.

I assume this is more of Asus saying to MS, look we have ten/twenty million of these handheld PCs already in production and we’ve only been able to sell a couple millions, partner with us and let’s brand them as Xbox handhelds ASUS will do all the heavy lifting so we don’t take a loss on all these, and all MS has to do is market the platform and put your logo, the new Xbox OS/app you’ve been working on, and together we’ll helps each other out and push more GamePass subscriptions.

That make complete logical sense as to why this came about, because otherwise….. So technically it would be a win:win for both companies, or a win for MS and a reduction of loss of ASUS, even if they only sell 10m - 20m units.

As for the handheld itself honestly, it should be solid and most likely based on the Rog Ally 7, but hopefully with the Rog Ally X case as that has a much better port and I/O layout. Plus if the Xbox OS is wayyyyyyy lighter than Windows then it should be a a good piece of tech getting more performance than the Ally 7 Windows version for around $499.

But that’s where the next problem comes into play…..Price. It’s Switch 2 all over again. The slight different is outside of the potential of DLSS, this should be a slightly more powerful handheld, especially if they create their own dock, but that dock will likely be sold separately meaning now we’re looking at $550 or more, for what will essentially be a docked Xbox Series S and a slightly more powerful SteamDeck / Switch 2 in handheld mode.

peppeaccardo73d ago

The Irrelevant-Held will be able to connect to the XFLOP Series X

anast73d ago

ha! It might last longer than the Stadia.

Profchaos73d ago

Basically what windows os turning into now every few weeks logging on I'm greeted with a hey how about some office 365 or your gamepass lapsed how about renewing and decline is in little blue writing while subscribe is a huge button

anast73d ago

This and I also get a pop up to subscribe to Xbox GamePass.

PanicMechanic74d ago

So smart of you caveman Phil sphincter. Did you get the memo on what Nintendo is releasing this year?

Kyizen74d ago

I dont trust Microsoft to build an OS for this looking at the Windows phone so I think this will be just Windows with a Steam like Big Picture mode locked in the UI to launch games.

Rockstar73d ago

This is good advice from Reaper here. I trust your advice and you've got my word...I wont buy it.

Thanks Reaper!

YourMommySpoils73d ago

Then don't complain about facts.

PanicMechanic73d ago (Edited 73d ago )

So in other words, it’s just another ROG Ally. I think MS has a winner🤣🤣

FinalFantasyFanatic73d ago

I remember when my sister bought a Windows phone, that thing was missing so many basic features, she didn't even own the phone for 3 months before getting frustrated and swapping it out.

Profchaos73d ago

I'll be honest I had a older relative that loved the windows phone cause it had a huge dial, contacts and camera button that was all it got used for.

Oh and it was bright green so easy to find

Moral of the story one person's trash is another's treasure

Reaper22_73d ago

Windows phones weren't the best but I also remember sonys phones didn't fare too well either. As a matter of fact they're newest ones aren't doing so great either. Not even in Japan. That says alot.

Profchaos73d ago

@reaper22 honestly Shane about the Sony phones to I brought the Xperia 3 when they announced remote play for it and it was one of the best ones I have had the battery lasted a few days the camera was some obscene 50mp but the physical design lagged behind Samsung and I think that was a huge reason it failed

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Reassures Xbox Gamers Their Gaming Library Isn't Going Anywhere

Xbox's CEO Phil Spencer assures that, even though they are expanding to other platforms, Xbox gamer's libraries aren't going anywhere.

jznrpg123d ago

Phil, the words of a guy who only speaks the truth.

If I was an Xbox owner I wouldn’t feel comfortable with what he just said

crazyCoconuts122d ago

Reading his quote sounds like word salad. I'm not sure he said anything really.

darthv72122d ago

I'd rather him say more of our library will be made available now. It sucks to have so many 360 era games still stuck in limbo, especially Activision ones now that they are buddy buddy.

VenomUK122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

Sarah Bond had committed to backwards compatibility, so interpreting Phil Spencer’s quote, old Xbox games will always be playable with a PS3 on PSN like cloud solution, and on new hardware if a new Xbox console is ever released.

Scissorman123d ago (Edited 123d ago )

why does this even need to be reassured? it really goes to show you how nervous there fanbase is.

Eonjay122d ago

Right. I was thinking the same thing. This shouldn't be some sort of 'benefit' for Xbox gamers as MS goes to Sony and Nintendo... This should just be implied. No matter where the games go in the future should have any impact on the purchased games libraries of current Xbox consumers.

pwnmaster3000122d ago

Yup no matter how much they say they don’t care, the fanbase care lol

Profchaos122d ago (Edited 122d ago )

What's left of them one the last 12 months I've seen Xbox consoles flooding second hand marketplaces and going for half of their RRP

In addition this interview the whole panel was clearly not believing the viewpoint but not wanting to offend their guest

LabRat122d ago

When (or "if") Xbox goes out of hardware those who don't play on Cloud or prefer hardware...where will they play their library?

PhillyDonJawn121d ago

Not the question. If you already gave the hardware and games. Why would it disappear?

Chocoburger122d ago

Ah yes, Phillip, the pinnacle of honesty, and he never changes his mind. We can all take his word for it without hesitation. 🤥

Profchaos122d ago

He did but in the follow up sentence he talked about charging pricing because they are a business so who knows maybe the next gen box has a fee to use their emulator service I imagine wine ports to a PC architecture
