Dead Or Alive 5: Last Round Sexualized Fighters Have Fans And Critics At Odds

One Angry Gamer "At the end of February Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja released Dead or Alive 5: Last Round for the Xbox One and PS4. The game is scheduled to drop on March 30th for PC. The reviews from many European and American critics have slowly been rolling out for the game that dote on the sexualization of the characters, much to the frustration for fans of the series."

... the ridiculous DLC-milking IS.

I really don't mind a game featuring semi-naked characters in it. Just like I don't mind games like GTA and God of War having violence in it.

It's very simple: Don't like it!? Then don't buy it.

Not every piece of entertainment, be it comics, games, TV, cartoons, whatever, HAS to be 'politically correct'. We NEED to have entertainment like this to be available, to give us different options, new experiences, daring to try things other developers and creators will choose to stay away from.

Also, there is a sound and fun game-foundation underneath the sexy outfits. It's a very nice and entertaining fighter. It doesn't NEED the sexy outfits, but considering Team Ninja is intent on milking this game COMPLETELY for hundreds of dollars, it's kinda obvious that they would these kinds of outits as well: Sex sells.

So, content-wise, I'm not bothered about any of the sexy stuff.

I AM bothered about the whole DLC-milking thing, and how 2-3 years after the release of the original game, they're STILL milking it, instead of offering an actual complete release with ALL content included.

Here's the thing I've been saying everywhere about this issue. Sure DOA fans can keep the skins in tournaments as much as they'd like. And sure Team Ninja can keep pumping them out. However just keep in mind no one takes this game seriously on a competitive level anymore for that same reason.

Which to a fighting game is somewhat of a big deal. So they can keep their destructible bikinis, but they just got removed from EVO. They can have their skimpy outfits but they were just taken out of CEO. And you can cry out "SJW BS" all you want but some gaming communities are realizing what Las vegas realized years ago. If you want a broader demographic to come in and enjoy something, you keep the strippers in the back.

Spotie3730d ago

That's stupid. Primarily because the main audience for such tournaments doesn't care about that; only the promoters do.

If I want to get into Avon sales, I gotta deal with the fact that it's a business and business model aimed at women. The men who get involved understand this. Just because I'm huge on books doesn't mean I want harlequin romance novels to cater to me; those are aimed at female readers, and that's just fine.

The fighting game genre- and DOA specifically- is aimed at males. Let it freaking be. Men and women can be equal all they want, but that doesn't mean everything has to appeal to both sexes equally. And trying to force that equality where it's not wanted or needed is only going to ruin things.

Baka-akaB3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

Thing is , the moment they remove all of ther T&A content , many will just drop the game , even including a few folks like me wich dont care for skimpy outfits and most like the gameplay of a few games in the serie . (Hell i just play Elliot , gen Fu , Akira essentially) .

Because people wont accept that a studios bend over and fold enough for game to lose it's identity , however quirky , to please some prudes .

If it happens , it wont bring newcomers over , the press will still have disdain for the serie because of its "racy" past ... and older fans will leave the game .

As for EVO , meh ..
It's a great tournament , but ultimately focus half of it on undeserved and silly mainstream popularity . It wouldnt be the first time games that deserves it arent featured in main events or at all .

King of Fighters XIII , after a pretty hype tournament , and with actually a lot of viewers for the streams , was still removed and pushed aside ... while a borefest (in the context of tournament i mean) like Injustice was still on to be promoted .

Somebody3730d ago

This is gaming that involves people of different interests across the world, not some glorified casino in the middle of a desert. Gaming is already a broad platform where everyone is free to get involved in so asking one demographic to be swept away under the rug because they don't fit a certain agenda of a particular group is contradictory.

Gaming would be a scary place if it really emulates Las Vegas and and "digital bouncers" start appearing all over the place to ensure everyone follow the house's rules.

GameSpawn3730d ago (Edited 3730d ago )

I don't have a problem with the content, I have a problem with the amount of it and how much they are charging, AND with the fact that a re-release of a re-release doesn't include a damn bit of the older DLC.

I got the Injustice PS4 re-release and it came with ALL of the previously released DLC. I didn't feel cheated one bit. With DoA they are charging you an arm, leg, and your first born for all the previously released DLC that is NOT included in the re-release.

I've lost all interest in DoA since Ultimate on the Xbox (the first one). I latched on to games like Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur, which in my personal opinion are more enjoyable and competitive. Sadly Virtua Fighter hasn't seen a console release since Virtua Fighter 5. I skipped Soul Calibur's last release because it never added much more over IV to justify the purchase. I feel Soul Calibur is better with juggling combos, whereas Virtua Fighter was better with counters and reversals (with respect to each other not DoA).

Thus the price of democracy and freedoms. If the market will bare it, you have to accept the reality that a franchise or game you like can be subjected to any kind of exploitation, because unlike buying shares of a company, the only thing you get from buying the game, is a license to use it as they see fit.

"I AM bothered about the whole DLC-milking thing,"

Lol you should make this your placeholder text for every post you make on N4G. Seen you say this LOADS of times (not having a go at you, its just an observation tis all).

Isn't most of the DLC just optional skimpy costumes etc? I haven't played DoA in a while.

TXIDarkAvenger3731d ago

The series was always like this yet its becoming an issue now? All these people complaining aren't planning to buy the game anyways. So annoying.

wannabe gamer3730d ago

game has always been this way. i mean look at the DOA beach volleyball game, its a glorified spank bank!

Roccetarius3730d ago

Itagaki made Beach Volleyball with this in mind, but the main DoA games were still mainly about the fighting.

Team Ninja is just taking it further with the skimpyness, compared to what Itagaki would've done.

It's ok to have scantily clad, busty girls in games. It's also ok to have lots of white people in games.

Developers don't have to pander to SJW/feminist scum, and they're not gonna lose out by ignoring them.

Damn, Train Simulator is costing the big bucks. That game is kinda fun but not if you purchase all the DLC.

Relientk771512d ago

I will never understand why people pay for this crap.

"All the DLC - Train Simulator 2020, $10,145"

No wonder we're witnessing an increasing number of ports from PC to consoles, you can't nickel and dime PC owners with all their mods over there, lol

"Legatus Pack - Star Citizen $27,000"

Ouch!

Planet Calypso - Entropia Universe, $6,000,000

WTF...?!

Marie Rose: The making of Dead or Alive's doll-faced superstar

An in-depth interview feature with the developers at Koei Tecmo on the making of, and superstar rise of Marie Rose. From the feature: "For a series infamous for its big-breasted women and pin-up tone to then provide players with an option that so completely embraced cuteness was surely a creative risk. This is particularly true of markets outside of Japan, where people are as a rule far less comfortable with “cute” and “sexy” being in the same proverbial ballpark."
