Square Enix Has Some Ideas On How To Make Dragon Quest Successful In The West

GS:" Despite some moderate success in the West, it’s been some time since we have seen some new releases of the series in North America and Europe. Despite nothing new coming in the past few months, something new might be coming soon, according to Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda."

All they have to do is let it be an RPG. Trying to turn Dragon Quest into anything else other than an active battle system, treasure hunting, loot dropping, grinding to level up, RPG will result in failure.

* I love Dragon Quest as it is.

My only complaint would be there isn't enough variety or enough music in general.

* Every Town needs it's own theme....you can keep using just one town theme.

* You need more than just one battle theme as well.
- It's what your doing 80% of the time, you might as well keep things fresh.

* More music in general.

RPG's have like 50-100 tracks, but DQ games only ever have like 15 music tracks throughout the entire game, and it's all usually just one style.

I want Dragon Quest 9 + Dragon Quest 8 + The Good Elements of Dragon Quest 10 = Dragon Quest 11

square enix has an idea = r.i.p dragon quest.

Dragon Quest isn't going to be a thing in the west. It'll sell to JRPG fans and that's about it. If you try to change it, you wont get any new customers and you'll piss off the old ones.

They still sell well enough to profit off the localization. They're already making the game, the only marginal cost of bringing it over is the localization. The main character doesn't even speak so there goes your voice acting costs.

Re-release 8 in HD on the current gen consoles (screw mobile, nobody plays RPGs on mobile in the west). Then follow up with IX and maybe X. Also release Heroes to western audiences to get them engaged in the lore, perhaps sparking an interest in earlier titles.

Now make an XI that is developed from the ground up for this gen/PC, single player JRPG with pure DQ gameplay and gorgeous, Toriyama inspired visuals that look like a Manga come to life. Watch money roll in.

Exactly. I would also pay for some older Dragon quest games on the store. I've only played 1 through 4 unfortunately (3 was the best). 3ds exclusivity is killing certain franchises for me and many others tbh. I have nothing against the system but it's become a safe way to make money by making lesser quality games for handheld and it's essentially sucking the potential for certain franchises to evolve to the extent they could. Even monster hunter 4 didn't make it to Wii u. What's with that?

They can still be good games in their own right, but the massive hardware limitations lead to a game that cannot be described with any other word better than "lesser" like you said. The games cost them probably a quarter to a third of the budget to make, they sell a bit lower, but the risk is far lower and the profit is marginally higher.

The day they make monsters give decent exp instead of making us hunt for those annoying metal slimes, is the day I'll go back to this franchise.

I've never played a DQ game, but this honestly makes me want to check it out. I really dig that art style.

Grab DQ III HD/2D Remake. It comes chronologically before these two. It's out now.

And, if you play it first, the dev said there's a surprise for when you play I & II.

Yes, the perfect fit for PS Portal

Michiel198983d ago

I never played one till I played 11 and as an old school turnbased fella, I don't know why i waited so long. Its pure turnbased jrpg goodness. If that's your cup of tea you have to give them a try. Now I'm gonna play all of them

I remember getting Dragon Warrior for free with a one year subscription to Nintendo Power. Super deal! Might just have to pick it up again.

Dragon Quest VIII 4th? Yikes. That's easily number 1 for me. I'd love to be able to play it again on newer consoles.

Zeldafan64583d ago

III, XI and VIII are my top 3 in that order. While I think XI is the better game overall my nostalgia for III will never be beat.

thorstein84d ago

3 for me too because I loved that you could build your own town. Then the monster hunting and monster arena were such a great side distraction.

And, of course, the companions, jobs etc.

Good games but no Phantasy Star?

merlox754d ago

Why do people forget Phantasy Star? That is one of my favorite RPG series. Another ther good but overlooked series is ,Y's.

ES3 set things off, it's a shame they got greedy and decided to cut corners so the executives could get huge pay days.
