Editorial - Sony's Home may not be where the heart is

Destructoid writes: "There is a very real reason why I don't touch social MMOs. The people that live in them are a bit too weird for my personal tastes. I'm not talking about people who play to enjoy themselves, or buy property or even to discover others whose tastes might be comparable. I'm talking about the people that dress their avatars with bunny ears and refuse to use any variant of language other than "rabbit." If anything, one could easily say that there is an odd culture that accompanies these avatar driven games.

Thankfully, flying penises and furry costumes probably won't be allowed in Home. If you fell off the bus on videogame news for the last year, Home is basically the Sony version of Second Life. Unlike Second Life though, Home restricts players to just walking around, conversing, and exploring the tools of the Sony dashboard in a 3D environment. Players will have the option to create unique avatars, decorate their own apartments and even watch trailers.

The reason I bring this up is that on our wonderful nation's holiday, PSN director Eric Lampel tried to reassure PS3 owners that the oft-delayed Home will come out for real this fall. Unfortunately, despite Sony's attempts to coddle my expectations, I feel that it may finally be time to just suck it up and say that Home could possibly blow.

Click on to allow me to elaborate."

i think he forgot that home is made by sony so it is automatically a success

NegativeCreep4276139d ago

No he KNOWS it is from Sony so he automatically hates it, just like with all the double-standards that exist with the PS3. The PS3 is going through the same S**t the African-American people went through in the 1940's.

GiantEnemyCrab6139d ago

I've been on this site for awhile now and I must say:

"The PS3 is going through the same S**t the African-American people went through in the 1940's."

is the most ridiculous and dumb assed statement I have ever read on this site. Congratulations loser you and QueefyB are made for each other.

NegativeCreep4276139d ago

You obviously have the opinion of a crack-head degenerate who only runs his/her mouth when it seems to be appropriate with their precept. You...Don't...Know...Sh*T!!!

QueefyB6139d ago

wow negative you just embarrassed giantenemycrab so bad i dont think he will be able to sleep tonight giantenemy here is a lullaby to help you get some sleep;

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping?
Brother Crab, Brother Crab?
Morning bells are ringing, morning bells are ringing
Ding ding dong, ding ding dong.

QueefyB6139d ago

lol you know what would be funny what if you met bill gates on playstation home i think that would be great you could then make pies and then throw them at him

ChrisGTR16139d ago

.....are you 10 years old?!??! wait nvm ,dont answer that.

GiantEnemyCrab6139d ago

Of course Queefy loves HOME, it's going to be a sausage fest and he has his knife and fork ready!

NegativeCreep4276139d ago

Shut up. Dr. Phil is so pu$$y-whipped it ain't even funny.

juuken6139d ago (Edited 6139d ago )

Lol...Crab and Chris...why don't you guys rent a room and screw each other up the ass? Queefy was kidding around....jeesh. Daaaamn, you guys really DO love that huge c*ck! In fact, it's like a huge c*ckfest with you 360 fanatics!

And no Crab, you weren't playing around. I can tell the difference between a joke and a serious comment. You hate everything PS3 related so you wouldn't resist in attacking it from all sides.

Lol, I use things I see other people using? Um...excuse me but I have a mind of my own. If I have something to say, I will say it and I don't give a damn if it hurts feelings or not. And if you wanna talk about bias, then your unsatiable hatred for Sony would be a fine example of that.

I may not like Microsoft as a company or some of the games on the 360 but I do like some of them, and I think XBL is pretty good.

Can you say you like anything about Sony?

I think not.

Nice try at insulting me, but I was unaffected.

GiantEnemyCrab6139d ago

Wow, Juuken you are so original! Just take the same jokes that everyone else uses and say them again! How do you know I'm also not joking around you one-sided blind sheeple?

Your bias is so deep you don't even realise when your doing it.

I bet Queefy get's more c0ck then you've had in your whole life! Trust me on this, your dad told me so.

QueefyB6139d ago

wow giantenemycrab you sound really angry i hope everything is ok i wonder why are you talking about reproductive organs this is a video game site not a science class ok so heres the picture http://www.slashgear.com/ga...

butterfinger6139d ago

Wow, you're getting so worked up. Maybe you should put down the Gears for a little while. All that macho man, sausage-loving has got you in a frenzy. Is this the roid rage talking?

ChrisGTR16139d ago

butterfinger LOL!!! hey dont be talking about sausages, your name alone is enough to describe how much you like them.

Obama6139d ago

lol crab. You are not joking around because you are not funny. If you are a fanboy making fanboish but funny comments, you wouldn't have only 4 bubbles.

butterfinger6138d ago

ChrisGTR1 made another un-funny, nonsensical statement! It really is cute to see a guy with a pinkish-purple Dr. Phil background sticking up for his boyfriend. You guys must be looking for some sort of couples award on N4G.

ChrisGTR16138d ago

..says the guy defending queefyb

butterfinger6138d ago

I'm not defending anyone, I was just pointing out how retarded your comment was (which is the norm for you). Obama hit the nail on the head with his comment. GEC and yourself are both only funny to each other, and queefyb is actually funny to many of us. You're like that a$$ at the funny movie trying to make your own jokes and steal the attention. I don't really care, though, it's just fun pointing out your ignorance while I'm in the office. I also personally enjoy watching xbox fanboys (like yourself) get all worked up and offended by queefyb.

WTH he doesnt give a reason why, except for the ad issue, and he states this is going to be a 3d qore version, doesnt this idiot know that Qore is an interactive Magazine? jeez, he isnt in the beta.

BulletToothtony6139d ago (Edited 6139d ago )

i am, and i gotta say.. being in beta stage there's not that many people walking around, and not all of the functions "work" but they are there and they have added amazingly lot of cool features since last april.

Even with no that many people i have met some really cool people, i sit there playing bowling or chess and talk to other gamers, then i go and play with these same people some cod4 and you know them already and is very cool.. because it's something you don't get to do anywhere else.

The idea of jumping straight into a multiplayer game such as warhawk or Resistance2 with 4 of my buddies after being in my apt in Home, is what attracts me the most.

Overall, that article was written out of ignorance and it's understandable, i would have my doubts if i didn't know much about it either.

zapass6139d ago

he's just another game blogger with a page to fill to generate ad revenue and he bores us with "an editorial" (lol) about something he doesn't know sh!t about except that it's gonna generate traffic from controversy.

If you are in the Home Beta can you make suggestions?
I wish they will implement one 3D trophy for all future games. Make it hard to get but make it good.
I think completing all normal trophy requirements for the PSN card to trade for that 3D trophy at Home is a good idea.

I got Super Stardust HD to see what it was like, the 2d trophies are kinda boring and ugly and I don't need a whole bunch of crappy little trophies if they introduce it in Home. I think one per game would be the ideal. And they don't have to come in trophy form, maybe come as a Poster you can put on walls, T-shirt, Watch, Jacket and things of the like that you can ware on your avatar.

I've been playing the Japanese Free PSN game Mainichi Issho (launched since day one for free), they give you all these game posters and toys you can display in your room and garden, all by just playing online mini games and watching daily news to earn virtual points. If you watch a daily news that's based on a game sometimes they'll do promotional stuff and give you posters and toys without you having to spend virtual points for them.

Home 3d trophies needs to be like Mainichi Issho... overall Mainichi Issho just seems like a better game (better entertainment) than Home and that game's been there for free since day one of Japanese launch. Home needs to be at least at Mainichi Issho's level before launch or else it really just feels like any other old social MMO. I think that's the reason Kaz Hirai keep on pushing Home back?

Anyway sorry for the rant... Here's a vid of Mainichi Issho and I'll attach some example pics of people's rooms (all decorated without having to spend real money).

BulletToothtony6139d ago

3D trophies were announced a long time ago... as to what extent will they be used? I'm not sure, i know that there will be a big trophy room with the people with highest ranks in certain games, but i'm pretty sure you'll be able to show off your own trophies in your own apt in home..

When home came out, i was concerned about how good it would ultimately be, but by now they have added so many great things that there's really nothing left that i could ask for, and i am very picky..

Home will be a hit.. that's for sure

pwnsause6139d ago

Dir_en_grey, if you mean get free stuff from Home when you unlock a trophy, i think that is bound to happen, that was one of the things Phil Harrison was talking about last year during GDC 07. and Trophies are going to be 3d, i think you shouldnt even worry about the trophy part, in terms of the gamercard system that the PSN has now, i think its going to play a part in Home. i remembered about 6-8 months ago, there was a selection in home to see your gamercard, put that got removed, it will possiblly return though.

Dir_en_grey6139d ago (Edited 6139d ago )

Thanks guys for the heads up!! =)
Bubbles up! ^_-

Lifendz6138d ago

Sony basically took that and ran with it. Yeah Home is like second life but it's really just navigating the menus in a 3d environment. I don't know how it'll work though. Will I be in a massive area with every other PS3 owner in my town, state, country? If so, how do I combat the weirdos that are sure to be there? If it's weirdo overload would I even bother? And I'm sure decorating my Home is going to be cool but will it keep me coming back. More importantly, if you guys aren't into then I'm not going to be into it. Home is going to need a thriving community to make it enjoyable. Otherwise, I'll probably just go to my xmb and never open it.

I hope they get it to work. I'd love to be able to attend a Home version of say 1UP Yours (and possibly throw a virtual tomatoe at Garnett Lee).

Maybe do a little tour of Liberty City. Or, maybe better yet, do a virtual tour of Insomniac studios or attend Sony events.

Lots of things they could do but, again, it all depends on us PS3 owners.

What scares me is if it takes off and the functionality of PSN continues to expand, will the service remain free?

I'm talking about the people that dress their avatars with bunny ears and refuse to use any variant of language other than "rabbit."

i call that commitment to a bit

So, I Finally Played Home

I recently published an article about beating my Steam backlog by getting organised and the first game I’ve completed with this new approach is Home.

I chose Home not because of its production values or reviews, but because, well, it’s short. I needed a game to start my new approach on the right foot and read that Home takes less than two hours to beat.

Whatever my reasons for finally installing Home, I found it to be an enjoyable yet flawed title.
