Editorial - Sony's Home may not be where the heart is

Destructoid writes: "There is a very real reason why I don't touch social MMOs. The people that live in them are a bit too weird for my personal tastes. I'm not talking about people who play to enjoy themselves, or buy property or even to discover others whose tastes might be comparable. I'm talking about the people that dress their avatars with bunny ears and refuse to use any variant of language other than "rabbit." If anything, one could easily say that there is an odd culture that accompanies these avatar driven games.

Thankfully, flying penises and furry costumes probably won't be allowed in Home. If you fell off the bus on videogame news for the last year, Home is basically the Sony version of Second Life. Unlike Second Life though, Home restricts players to just walking around, conversing, and exploring the tools of the Sony dashboard in a 3D environment. Players will have the option to create unique avatars, decorate their own apartments and even watch trailers.

The reason I bring this up is that on our wonderful nation's holiday, PSN director Eric Lampel tried to reassure PS3 owners that the oft-delayed Home will come out for real this fall. Unfortunately, despite Sony's attempts to coddle my expectations, I feel that it may finally be time to just suck it up and say that Home could possibly blow.

i am, and i gotta say.. being in beta stage there's not that many people walking around, and not all of the functions "work" but they are there and they have added amazingly lot of cool features since last april.

Even with no that many people i have met some really cool people, i sit there playing bowling or chess and talk to other gamers, then i go and play with these same people some cod4 and you know them already and is very cool.. because it's something you don't get to do anywhere else.

The idea of jumping straight into a multiplayer game such as warhawk or Resistance2 with 4 of my buddies after being in my apt in Home, is what attracts me the most.

Overall, that article was written out of ignorance and it's understandable, i would have my doubts if i didn't know much about it either.

If you are in the Home Beta can you make suggestions?
I wish they will implement one 3D trophy for all future games. Make it hard to get but make it good.
I think completing all normal trophy requirements for the PSN card to trade for that 3D trophy at Home is a good idea.

I got Super Stardust HD to see what it was like, the 2d trophies are kinda boring and ugly and I don't need a whole bunch of crappy little trophies if they introduce it in Home. I think one per game would be the ideal. And they don't have to come in trophy form, maybe come as a Poster you can put on walls, T-shirt, Watch, Jacket and things of the like that you can ware on your avatar.

I've been playing the Japanese Free PSN game Mainichi Issho (launched since day one for free), they give you all these game posters and toys you can display in your room and garden, all by just playing online mini games and watching daily news to earn virtual points. If you watch a daily news that's based on a game sometimes they'll do promotional stuff and give you posters and toys without you having to spend virtual points for them.

Home 3d trophies needs to be like Mainichi Issho... overall Mainichi Issho just seems like a better game (better entertainment) than Home and that game's been there for free since day one of Japanese launch. Home needs to be at least at Mainichi Issho's level before launch or else it really just feels like any other old social MMO. I think that's the reason Kaz Hirai keep on pushing Home back?

3D trophies were announced a long time ago... as to what extent will they be used? I'm not sure, i know that there will be a big trophy room with the people with highest ranks in certain games, but i'm pretty sure you'll be able to show off your own trophies in your own apt in home..

When home came out, i was concerned about how good it would ultimately be, but by now they have added so many great things that there's really nothing left that i could ask for, and i am very picky..

Dir_en_grey, if you mean get free stuff from Home when you unlock a trophy, i think that is bound to happen, that was one of the things Phil Harrison was talking about last year during GDC 07. and Trophies are going to be 3d, i think you shouldnt even worry about the trophy part, in terms of the gamercard system that the PSN has now, i think its going to play a part in Home. i remembered about 6-8 months ago, there was a selection in home to see your gamercard, put that got removed, it will possiblly return though.

Sony basically took that and ran with it. Yeah Home is like second life but it's really just navigating the menus in a 3d environment. I don't know how it'll work though. Will I be in a massive area with every other PS3 owner in my town, state, country? If so, how do I combat the weirdos that are sure to be there? If it's weirdo overload would I even bother? And I'm sure decorating my Home is going to be cool but will it keep me coming back. More importantly, if you guys aren't into then I'm not going to be into it. Home is going to need a thriving community to make it enjoyable. Otherwise, I'll probably just go to my xmb and never open it.

I hope they get it to work. I'd love to be able to attend a Home version of say 1UP Yours (and possibly throw a virtual tomatoe at Garnett Lee).

Maybe do a little tour of Liberty City. Or, maybe better yet, do a virtual tour of Insomniac studios or attend Sony events.

Lots of things they could do but, again, it all depends on us PS3 owners.

What scares me is if it takes off and the functionality of PSN continues to expand, will the service remain free?

I'm honestly not looking forward to HOME that much, but I think that it's a very unique concept and it's a big step forward when it comes to the PS3's social network and Online. I think that HOME will appeal to a lot of casual gamers wanting to buy a PS3, but I'm not saying that HOME is just for casual gamers because it's not, It's just that a lot of casual gamers play The SIMS, and HOME looks very similiar too it.

There's a LOT of stuff that could be implemented in HOME and that is what has me excited about it. I think that it was at Ubidays this year, Ubisoft had their press conference/ gaming activities broadcasted LIVE in HOME, and anyone in HOME could watch it... now that's pretty cool to me because it would be awesome to watch a future E3 show, Tokyo Game Show,Playstation Day and/or GDC LIVE while in HOME.

I'm pretty sure that if HOME does become a successful service, Microsoft will probably come up with their own version of HOME.

well home will be for some casual gamers and some really HARDCORE gamers.. because the ability for your whole clan to meet up in your apt, while you play a movie/music in your own apt, while talking about Socom/resistance2 strategies and then being able for everyone to jump into the game all at once is quite awesome.

How it works is that in your virtual psp there is a "Create a game" feature, then you can pick the game, whatever you have in your hdd or if you have a disk in your ps3, then it asks you if you want to save a spot for a friend and blah blah blah, then you press start in 30 seconds and everyone around you can join you during those 30 seconds and then supposedly all of you will appear in some lobby in the game..

that is the part that attracts me the most about home, so yeah casual gamers and hardcore will have something to do, of course you don't need home to meet up with your friends in a game, it would be just to get to talk for a bit b4 the game. and imo that's a great idea.

Yeah, IMO it matters little in the event that Home sucks because it's absolutely FREE and you're not forced into using it. But I have very high hopes for it and from what I've seen I'm very impressed. Not only does there seem to be a wealth of things to do... but you can actually interact with real people. Even if it becomes some glorified chat room... is that so bad? Maybe you need a break from your latest title and just want to chill. You can go into Home and chat with your friends about ANYTHING! And there's no telling what you might see from other users. Imagine a bunch of people getting together and dressing up in the same wacky costume and dancing in the town square! There's plenty of opportunity for funny, unique sh!t like that.

And if trophies unlock new content and/or can be displayed in your home. Well, I'm sure that's going to be even more reason for people to go for that elusive platinum!

I've said this very thing in many post. Home just isn't appealing anymore. When it was 1st announced, yeah. It was pretty cool and had they released it then right now we'd be at the stage that it'd be a fully functioning awesome, interactive feature of the ps3. Think of the updates we could have had by now to get us there.

Right now, we're not getting it until Late October to Mid December. That means we're going to have a long wait before it evolves into what we invisioned it to be.

Phil didn't leave Sony for no reason, guys. Home is a disaster and Kaz saying it's not up to his standards yet doesn't bode well for us who see a 4 month release date on the way.

Home will fail and Sony will be out of pocket on it. I know, guys. I know. I've seen home and played home and have the benifit of doing so when I want to. It's not ready and it's not exciting.

To be honest companies are just going to put up advertisements they aren't going to make avatars to bug you while you're in Home. When I walk in a mall and I see TV screens I don't get all upset because a company is advertising. I find this the weirdest thing about editors, they some how think advertising will ruin everything. What do you think a trailer is or a demo?

With user created content I don't see anything wrong with this just block the type of people you don't want friends. I never hear people say oh, no Sony allows picture messaging I just hope I don't see a penis, lol. There is always something that can go wrong with everything but it only seems to come up with Sony only. The rest should be common sense to gamers that actually think. I personally think the adverts is what will keep PlayStation Home free because companies will have to pay for spaces.

I can't see Home failing even if it doesn't have very much features. I say this because it's a 3D representation of the PlayStation Network. You can send clan invites to your apartment and talk to way more people than any TV console service allows. So in the end I think the apartment is where people will most likely be for the most part unless announcements are made.

So let me get this straight. When xbox live was better than PSN everyone and their grandmas were up in arms dropping negative thoughts after negative thoughts. But that's really because of the GUI differences. They both have the same structure, I just wish MS could streamline the Dashboard interface a bit. Oh yeah, and HOME is optional. Every function you have in the HOME application (like game-launching) is going to be in the XMB as well.

I disagree because it isn't the fact that it's hard it's just how it's organized. Like for example if I want to search for something in the PlayStation Store and starts with the letter "X." All I have to so is go under "X" and look for the icon that represents the content I'm looking for. With XBOX Live if I'm looking for the same thing I have to go through all the "As" - "Ws" before I get to the "Xs."

With the main menu they (Sony) uses icons while Microsoft uses dashboards. It isn't confusing it's just navigation is easier instead of loading a whole page of information. Once you experience both you'll know what I'm talking about.

It staggers me just how little people seem to know about this product and its intentions.

So many 360 owners talk about how wonderful the 'communitty is' on xbox live, and they are right to do so.
This is simply a 3d virtual community where you pick up messages, meet and make new friends, and invite your mates for multiple games. Its simply the next level of the community features that people experience and enjoy on live - just wrapped up in virtual world.

Its no game, it simply the ultimate 3D interface for a host of community features. Whats not to like? Its like a virtual world desktop - whats wrong with that?

If you think its a game, your deluded. If you don't want the extra functionality and features, simply don't use it.

Personally, I think its a laudable attempt at bringing a true next gen interface to the online community space, and they've got real balls and vision for even attempting it! I'm looking forward to it and I genuinely feel this will be the benchmark for future online community ventures.

Finally someone who actually thinks before they type; I couldn't have said it better myself. Your key point / word(s) is that "it's not a game." What's really funny people complain that you will have pay for some clothing, furniture, and have apartments. As I recall on XBOX Live they have 2D avatars. In other words they pay for pictures (clothes), backgrounds (wallpaper), and profiles (apartments). That can be an example of what PlayStation Home is compared to XBOX Live.

The author claims he is worried about there being advertising in the form of--among other things--the clothing avatars wear, stores on the street, and furnishings in the home. So...he's worried it's going to be like the REAL WORLD?

Seriously, the types of advertising he's fretting over is the type we see every day of our lives: every time we get dressed, go to the mall, watch TV, go to the movies. So why should "Home" be any different? My point is it's just not something to worry about. I'd be more annoyed if there were pop up ads that covered the screen.

Oh, right. He's worried about clutter, saying that it's the nice clean easy to access XMB that he likes. Well, I'm not in the beta, so I don't know for sure, but isn't Home something that has to be loaded up, like a game? Something completely separate from the XMB? Omg and Butterfinger doesn't like my comments? What am I to do? It can't be that he is another PS3 fanboy trying to pretend to be nuetral like Juuken. He seems to have no problem with Juuken calling me a c*cksucker but is more than happy to lend is dry/lame/unfunny comments to me a 360 fanboy. He has come to the rescue of his fellow fishheads. Imagine getting the Big Boss Emblem in MGS4, unlocking a trophy. Then out of curiosity, you decide to check out the 3D Trophy in Home. But to your surprise, a message pops up in Home saying "Your avatar can now be customized as Big Boss."

Walking around Home as Big Boss. Everywhere you go, people will make their avatars bow down to you. Some will scream out "Snake... SNAKE... SNAAAAAAAAAKE!!!"

And you will say back to them, "Did you RIKE it!?"
