Gale writes - What gaming needs right now is a really, really good city-building sim. SimCity won’t do for obvious reasons, and it’s no wonder gamers have decided to look for their next fix elsewhere. Cities XXL promised to cater to those gamers. Before you ask – no. Those promises have not been fulfilled. Really, I could finish this review right here and now simply by stating that this is a slightly (and I mean slightly) improved version of Cities XL that Focus Home Interactive wants to sell for 40 bucks (or euro) a piece. I really am not joking – I’ve compared the two games and there are only four major differences between them. Cities XXL has more buildings, a slightly revamped interface, somewhat better optimization and Steam Workshop support. Yes, that really is all there is to it. Now that I’ve finished my ranting, let us get on with the review itself."
Do you love city builders? If so, you will want to check out Humble Store’s City Builder Weekend!
You’ll find games on sale like Cities XXL for $2.99, Cities: Skylines for $7.99, Anno 2205 for $9.99, Surviving Mars for $10.19, and many more deals! They also have expansion packs for Cities: Skylines and Project Highrise.
Palmer Sturman: Cities XXL is an expansion of sorts that attempts to masquerade as a full game. There are a number of touted differences that developer Focus Home Interactive proceeds to list as reasons to purchase this “new” version of the relatively well received Cities XL Platinum, none of them serve to justify the full cost of this re-release. As an avid player of the original Cities XL I can say that nothing added to this release is worth your time. In fact, you’re better off just purchasing the original and calling it a day. What’s even more startling is the fact that Cities XXL is riddled with performance issues, all made worse by the presence of a number of glitches. In spite of the potential laid out by its blank canvas of city-creating freedom, you’re much better off playing something else for your mayoral fix.
