Biggest Lies Video Game Developers Tried To Tell You But Ended Up Getting Caught

Unfortunately, gamers are lied to and are given expectations for video games far more than what developers are able to deliver.

Angry Joe interview with Larry Hryb

ABizzel13780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

@paulomoreira

It did, Super Stardust 3D was 720p @ 120fps. Whether it was the game you or anyone else was hoping for is irrelevant, but it was not a lie at all.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

ABizzel13780d ago

Has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand, and also the topic you originally referred to.

The definition of "going off at a tangent".

But since you brought it up, could you do me a favor and post the DIRECT link to the Famitsu article, because I remember reading it very clearly, and Shuhei SPECIFICALLY said their marketing campaign was geared towards exposing the negative DRM fiasco the XBO suffered. He NEVER said the PS4 had a DRM policy that was dropped after seeing what happened to the XBO. He said after seeing the negative towards the XBO and their DRM, it made decisions easy for Sony and became a useful source for the PS4.

The problem is your kind simply read flamebait headlines from amateur websites that flood n4g, and you trolls ran with it.

Even Polygon reported the news as it actually was.

http://www.polygon.com/2013...

Sony saw all the bad that happened with the XBO, and they simply exploited it, not once did he EVER say the PS4 had DRM.

abstractel3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

ABizzel, I think it's really clear that this thread is viewed by die-hard Xbox fans mostly who took offense to the article. Every rational comment in here is getting disagreed.

Neither company is perfect (both are made up out of thousands of individuals, and hundreds who influence the development to some extent, and tens who influence it significantly), and the definition of a fanboy is one that can't see the fault in who they are a fan of.

SonofGod3780d ago

That wasn't a lie. Major Nelson said it isn't as simple as flipping a switch to turn off DRM, which is true because the console was built around DRM. Anyone who knows a little bit about computer programming knows that they would have to change a lot of code to get a day one patch ready for the console launch.

But of course stupid people took it out of context and now it's a lie for some reason.

ABizzel13780d ago

It was a lie, because like he said to Angry Joe, He's not a software / hardware engineer so he had no idea how easy it was to stop the DRM policies.

They announced DRM, and literally within the months of E3 - launch (at most 5 months time) after seeing pre-order numbers getting wrecked they dropped DRM.

He had no business answering that question, because he was not a software engineer just like he told Angry Joe, and he looked flat out stupid after that.

UltraNova3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

Its really amazing that we still have people defending MS's draconian ways..they are indeed mind control masters.

OT: That 120fps quote was indeed hilarious, however fortunately for them, Sony changed their general stance for the better.

As for the Killzone 2 trailer I still dont get what the fuss was all about since the game was obviously 99% as good as that trailer (obvious to those who actually played it)

Cueil3780d ago

that there are people who think that the transition didn't cost Microsoft a ton of money and time as well as made them cut back on a ton of features that took months to get back on the console baffles me

OrangePowerz3780d ago

Good old Peter Mollyneux, they could write an essay just based on all of his overpromising :D

SmielmaN3780d ago

He was the worst. Every fable game that was about to be released was supposed to be revolutionary and a experience unlike any other. Then a couple months after release he talks about how he was disappointed with how the game turned out. That guy sucks.

OrangePowerz3780d ago

He still is, just look at his mobile thingy where people had to chip away blocks or Godus :)

n4rc3780d ago

OK.. Am I the only one that actually understands that expression? (In the pic)

"You can't just flip a switch" means its not easy or simple, nothing about being impossible.

n4rc3780d ago ShowReplies(1)
DragonKnight3780d ago

Actually it's clear you don't understand that expression because Microsoft almost literally just flipped a switch. They created a patch that just bypasses the checks, that's why the initial check is there when you first buy the Xbox One, but it literally was that easy for them.

Volkama3780d ago

Tis an impressive switch that measures the commercial and technical impact of a policy change, writes those new policies, writes and tests a patch, and addresses the inevitable concerns of their commercial partners. I wonder if major nelson got to be the guy that flipped it?

DragonKnight3780d ago

@Volkama: The corporate side of the switch definitely wasn't as easy to flip, granted, but when you stack the idea of flipping it requiring whole design changes vs. what actually happened (a software patch), that's where you see that it really was that easy for Microsoft. They, and Nelson wasn't the only one guilty of it, made it seem like the DRM was integral to the function of the device. It wasn't and a patch proved that.

Cueil3780d ago

the entire back end needed to be changed... remember this was just a few months from release when they did this... they didn't just "patch" the entire back end

DragonKnight3780d ago

@Cueil: Technically speaking they did just patch the entire back end. You also present a possible situation in which Microsoft were already planning to remove the DRM beforehand, which we know isn't true. Also, do you have any links to show that says they had to rewrite the entire back end, preferably not from neogaf?

SpinalRemains1383780d ago

No, he implied that manufacturing would have to come to a halt, the initial machines destroyed and the console redesigned.

He tried to imply that the change would require millions in a redesign and that the DRM was integral to the current state of the One's specs and OS.

It wasn't. He lied.

Cueil3780d ago

no he didn't... he implied that the system was designed with this in mind... truth... and that it would cost millions (man hours mostly) to redo the back end. Microsoft did that... we also lost a ton of features that we only really started to get back in may and june of the follow year

S2Killinit3780d ago

That response was given when a journalist would ask why dont they just turn it off, and he would imply that it was impossible by saying that "the whole console is based around that technology". Basically he was telling the fans to forget about it and dont complain because it wont go anywhere.

As long as people keep falling for these false promises then the publishers will keep pushing them.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro235d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken235d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown235d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72235d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken235d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya234d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast235d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood235d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro464d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72464d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_464d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga464d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23464d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000464d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin464d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole464d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix464d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989464d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

464d ago
Michiel1989464d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor768d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar768d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg768d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149768d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138768d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim768d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC768d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138768d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle768d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76768d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM768d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730768d ago (Edited 768d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger768d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca768d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy768d ago (Edited 768d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain768d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright768d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
