Alienware Alpha: Steam Machine vs PS4 and XBOX One

The world of technology has been rapidly changing and the scenario keeps getting intense and complex with every passing day.

LostDjinn3795d ago

They switched the PS4 and bone rez for watchdogs.
They site being only $100 more expensive even though it's $550.
This is beyond a joke. It's some hastily thrown together crap for clicks.
Now we just have to wait for the edit and subsequent denials. Ah gaming "journalism". WAFJ!

YamiMarik3795d ago

"They site being only $100 more expensive even though it's $550."

They were probably including the price of XBL/PSN.

XBLSkull3795d ago

Once windows 10 blends PC and Xbox gaming the Steam machine will be irrelevant, before it even really started.

Steam machines are just PC's in a mini-case and jacked up in price, a horrible choice in all situations. If you don't want a gaming PC next to your TV or dont have room just get a $150 wireless HDMI transmitter and you are good to go. Now you have a more powerful Steam machine and you paid a fraction of the price.

LackTrue4K3795d ago

@YamiMarik, then we should add the price of keyboard, and mouse...and internet bill to?

JsonHenry3795d ago (Edited 3795d ago )

No.. because a controller and internet are required to play on the consoles as well. And you can get a keyboard and mouse for much less than the cost of a (new) controller.

combatcash3795d ago

At what settings were the pc versions running? I don't see the settings other than res

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3795d ago (Edited 3795d ago )

Another absolutely pointless comparison. Alienware is a PC, Xbox One and PS4 are essentially gaming laptops. Since Alienware is a PC, of course it will perform better. Most people who buy consoles because they are convenient and easy to set up. Pop a game in and no adjustments or tweaks are necessary because console games are optimized (for the most part) to run on consoles.

If you enjoy PC gaming, buy an Alienware PC. If you want console games, buy a PS4 or an Xbox One.

LifeInNZ3795d ago

I have to disagree re: your comment about the X1 and PS4 essentially being gaming laptops however, I do wish both MS and Sony had not skimped on the CPUs as they are definitely the Achilles heel of both devices. It would have been great if they had both opted for a singe quad core for O/S and app tasks and something more substantial for gaming related tasks.

Sure we're going to see improved visuals this gen (we already have)n however, I'm not seeing anything on the AI front improving. Maybe that's where cloud based compute can really offer some benefit.

babadivad3795d ago

@LifeInNz
I'm sure he made the laptop comment because they both have laptop gpus. Pretty much a 7970m and 7870m by the CU count in the gpu for both consoles.

JsonHenry3795d ago

No, he's right. They're basically gaming laptops in terms of power and abilities. Which is a good thing because gaming laptops are actually pretty damn nice.

mysteryraz113794d ago

they are consoles not pcs or laptops pcs dont have fixed specs and ps4 and x1 when optimized will run games 2x better then pc of similar hardware

tee_bag2423793d ago (Edited 3793d ago )

You wish. Perhaps last gen, certainly not this gen. 7970m is what's in the consoles.. A laptop 7970m still spanks them in multiplatform games. Sad.

Won't your mom buy you a gaming PC yet. Is that why your salty?

roland823795d ago

I wouldn't fully consider alpha a pc since you can't upgrade everything in it such as graphics card. Not really sure the comparison to ps4 and xbox one to a laptop either

YamiMarik3795d ago (Edited 3795d ago )

At €550 with the OS (Windows 8) included, this thing is a great deal.

Maxor3795d ago

The problem with the Alpha is it's custom graphics solution, rendering the machine un-upgradeable. This is too console like for me and it's a deal breaker.

hennessey863795d ago

isn't that the whole point of steam machines, to give developers a more stable platform to develop for??. All I no is my i5 4690k and GTX 780 very rarely get used to there full potential, maybe a more stable platform will allow for better optimized games for PC.

Alienware’s Steam Machine Could be the Living Room PC You Always Wanted

Mike Stubbs: "The Steam OS is perhaps the most important addition. While big picture mode always did a serviceable job, this is a much more refined experience, with more detailed menus and options. Switching between games in your library is done with just a couple of button presses and load times seem fairly low. The layout of the games library also makes it easy to find the game you want, a dramatic improvement over the tiny text you get in the desktop version of Steam."

Alienware Alpha: How To Upgrade Its CPU, RAM, and Hard Drive

Daniel Perez "We’ve covered the Alienware Alpha quite a bit, including a formal review. Several of us on staff have been enjoying this micro PC for a number of reasons. But if you purchased the lower-end model which features an Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, you’re going to want to update that bad boy, especially if you now find yourself with a large Steam library of processor-heavy games."

F0XHOUND3795d ago

Literally exactly what I'd say lol! Each console is absolutely worth owning.

Myself, I currently play with ps4, ps3 and the vita. I just love plus offering on the ps3, yakuza 4 and my huge backlog of games, Catherine, xcom and access to the metal gear collection I want to play before Mgs V. The Vita is actually awesome if you have been downloading plus games for a while, muramasa rebirth, dragons crown, uncharted, ninja gaiden, gravity rush... let alone epic retail games like persona and final fantasy x HD!

I've got a wiiu, epic fun on Mario kart and xenoblade looks insanely good... and of course, Zelda! My 3DS, kinda just sat there... but like you say, bravely Second looks great!

All in all, gamers have it really good! I need to buy an Xbox One for Quantum Break too! Have a 45k achievement account I've not logged into for 2 years lol.

DarkOcelet3795d ago

I have 65k and still rising :)

Fro_xoxo3795d ago (Edited 3795d ago )

Sacrifices have to be made.. there's like no time to devote to every single one of those.

That said, a part of me always wants another platform, no matter what I already own.

I could never be content with one platform.

All_Consoles3795d ago

Alienware? lol, just build your own and enjoy the best gaming platform the way it was meant to be enjoyed

thorstein3795d ago

I was going to reply something similar. I think the price point on the Alienware Alpha isn't too bad. However, it has an i3...which isn't awful, but with Star Citizen on the horizon, I don't know that it will be screen melting.

If I buy something like the Alpha, I want it to be relevant for more than 6 months.

Exies73795d ago

I just got a 3DS, and I couldn't be happier with it. Heck, I'm not even mad a new one is coming out soon. I'll buy that one, too.

Such a great handheld.

Magicite3795d ago

In fact there are only 6 consoles available.

By ''etc etc etc'' at the end of WiiU you mean - nothing else?

DarkOcelet3795d ago

No i mean in 2015... its hard to keep track of all the games on all consoles.

They have a huge collection of games in 2015 but i pick the ones that are getting the most attention so that people know it does have great games in 2015. But i am pretty sure you get the idea.

Exies73795d ago

Indeed, pick the one that makes you happiest. Not the opinion of random people on the internet.

All the consoles have great content and specific gamers will gravitate towards different ones, because they fulfill differing gamer needs.

All_Consoles3795d ago

"Better multiplatform games"
"Great flash sales"

InTheLab3794d ago

So you can play a game that's only partially downloaded on pc? No?

thelwebb1003795d ago

The only games worth buying on PS4 this year is Bloodborne, UC4, The Wild, and Deep Down. I could care less about a ton of indies.

Sincere01213794d ago

Is that a list of all the broken and boring interactive movie type games coming to the ps4? Yaaawn. You must be a casual gamer and not have the skills to play any challenging and competitive games.
