ASUS ROG Ally Launches May 11, Features AMD Ryzen Z1 APU and 120Hz 1080p Touchscreen

Bundled with a 90-day Xbox Game Pass Ultimate trial, the ASUS ROG Ally is powered by a custom AMD Ryzen Z1 APU and runs on Windows 11. Screenshots of the handheld from all angles have also been released.

Uninstall it and add Steam OS. That being said you get significantly more compatibility with Windows.

On topic, this handheld PC is amazing in all aspects, but that price is going to be bare minimum $1000 - $1500, so while performance-wise it crushes Steam Deck in every way, and when docked with a good power source and effectively be a 1080p gaming PC, I'll stick to my $400 Steam Deck on the go and my consoles or actual Gaming PC.

Still amazing tech.

crazyCoconuts741d ago

Agreed on all counts. Steam OS on this wouldn't necessarily be a slam dunk, depending on drivers...
Steam has managed to create such a good console-like experience with Steam Deck, while still letting you tweak low level settings like TDP. I can't imagine ASUS getting to that same level of elegance and usability. But it would be easier to access non-steam games

andy85741d ago (Edited 741d ago )

I can't see it being that high. It's gonna flop if so. Most reports have it quite a way under that. I'd guess 700 for the lower and 900 for the higher model.

blackblades741d ago

If it cost that much then thats a hell no for most people. Hell people dont want the Ps vr2 because the price. Price is everything imo, be better to build a pc or have a mini pc at same level and then use steam link or other remote play on a phone or other cheap cloud gaming handheld or whatever.

ABizzel1741d ago

@Adny

If It’s less even better, but they’re likely going to take a large loss on it, especially considering the competitors have lower spaced handheld PCs already in the $700 - $1000 price range using the 680m.

Inverno741d ago

They said it'll be below 1000 actually. Bestbuy selling it too, and I doubt they'd sell something that niche at that price.

Not sure why they haven't announced the price yet though. Guessing they're really trying hard to hit a low price point? I cant see this being lesser than $1000 and compete with the Deck.

ElendilsSorrow741d ago

Reports are that it might hit around the $900 mark. The May 11 event will be where the pricing and full spec sheet is revealed

masterfox742d ago

Seriously I only see this thing just to put MAME in there , same idea for the Swutch and SteamDeck lol.

Neonridr742d ago

Steam Deck is a much cheaper option if all you want is to emulate with it.

Vits741d ago

This will stomp the SD in emulation though. The lowest SKU is a 6c/12t.
PS3 and Switch emulation which are not quite that good on the SD, should run flawlessly on the Ally.

Ironically enough, where the SD will probably compete is PC games. Because the lowest SKU for the Ally also features a fairly "limited" GPU with only 4 RDNA 3 CU against the SD's 8 RDN2 CU.

MetroidFREAK21741d ago

Definitely would love one, but it will probably be too expensive

andy85741d ago (Edited 741d ago )

I'm really tempted with this if it's at a 'reasonable' price point

Asus ROG Ally Handheld Console Announced During April Fool's and Is Actually Real

The Asus ROG Ally handheld gaming PC announced on April 1 is a genuine product with a powerful custom AMD APU that can run AAA PC titles on the go.

Probably $1000 tho. Not sure why theyre so secretive with that and the specs.

Kosic763d ago

I was confused why neither of the two YouTubers mentioned cost. But it's probably like you said it even more. The steam deck is a great handheld as it does the job for a good gamble of a price. Would I pay 1000+ for the same thing? Probably not, I'd wait it out.

TheEnigma313763d ago

And this is the reason why the Steam Deck is dominating the portable pc's in sales.

Kosic762d ago

That would be pretty insane if they do. But I would be skeptical. As they wouldn't make much profit on software sales unless they use their own store. The steam deck doesn't make Valve money on the hardware, so I do not see Asus selling it for a low price. But there is hope.

The link you sent me the youtuber says "you can't match the $400 bucks the steam deck sells for." Then he goes on to suggest he feels $600 would be ideal.

But asus' words are "very competitive" but what with? Against the steam deck or against other gaming laptops/hand held that are $800+?

At the moment it's too g to be a bait and switch. Get the hype in and drop a $899 price tag.

XbladeTeddy762d ago

400 dollars, yeah no chance with what they're offering. Even Valve said the pricing on the Deck was "painful" implying they may not even be breaking even on the Deck but relying on Steam game sales.

Sonic1881763d ago

I'm also hearing it has a 1080P mode 🤔

Nintendo Switch OLED - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Edition Launches April 28

Man, this looks cool.
The Pro Controller also looks really sweet, shame it's such a badly made controller.

LoveSpuds769d ago

Hmmmm, I bought a Splatoon variant of the Pro controller and its been fantastic. Comfortable to use and amazing battery life, I don't feel like I've heard much negativity about the pro controllers, unlike the joycons.

Vits769d ago

I don't doubt that you didn't notice the issues with the controller. The vast majority of people don't even know what makes a good controller. But I can tell you that the Switch Pro has many issues, the main ones being the surprisingly bad sticks, that not only have terrible accuracy, range and circularity but are also cheaply made and prone to degradation. And the badly designed d-pad with its tendency to fail diagonals and the worse implementation Nintendo ever made short of the joy-cons "d-pad".

LoveSpuds768d ago

Ahh, I guess you know best Vits, I have only been using controllers since 1982 when I had my Atari 2600 so I don't have as much experience or expertise as you.

I will say that I haven't used the Dpad much but the 100+ hours I used the controller for in my recent replay of Zelda BotW was absolutely great and the controller performed perfectly.

Neonridr769d ago

Pro controller is quite nice. And the battery lasts forever it seems.

XxINFERNUSxX770d ago

I wish Nintendo would release official joycons like this: https://www.etsy.com/listin...
I just got mine back and they are amazing I love the d-pad, never liked the 4 button's on the left joycon.

Ninte770d ago

Yeah, nah looking at the NZ price. I rather spend an extra $100 for a ps5.

LoveSpuds769d ago

I really like the look of the docking station, but I am less keen on the joycons. Overall though, a really nice looking variant.
