6 fixes the DualShock 4 still needs

Everything that still drives us crazy about the PlayStation 4’s awesome controller.

UKmilitia3806d ago

i love everythng about the pad except the rubber on the sticks.
i have had to have my launch pad sticks replaced after about 4 months and also the pad i bought when i sent my launch pad for replacent ha just had to go back too.

the original launch pad is starting to wear down again after being replaced 6 months ago but thank fully Sony customer service has been outstanding for me with anything ps4 related.

Gazondaily3806d ago

The rubber pads on mine have complete worn now (according to one chap on here, its a mythical problem though ¬¬ )

THe battery life is rubbish and the light can be annoying.

But overall, I like it. I still don't see the touch pad as a great addition but at least it serves the function of additional buttons for the controller.

D-pad is amazing. Its like lube for my thumb. Triggers are a massive improvement too over the DS3.

Caffo013806d ago

i still have my 2 ds4 from day 1 and the rubber is still perfect.. you guys must be playing 24 hours/day or have a very acid sweat..

Gazondaily3806d ago

"i still have my 2 ds4 from day 1 and the rubber is still perfect.. you guys must be playing 24 hours/day or have a very acid sweat.."

I hate it when people say this. Just because yours haven't worn off doesn't mean others have and really, it is quite a prevalent problem; thumbsticks wearing out that is not 'acid sweat' (never heard of that before).

I've got such feminine hands as well so it isn't a case of absolutely buggering my thumbsticks to erosion.

u4one3806d ago

i like the ds4 but it feels kind of cheap imo. I'm already on my second controller as the rubber wore off of the first one. the battery and lightbar are particular sticking points with me as well.

my tv is glass (or at least very glossy) and the lightbar reflection gets distracting - even on the lowest setting. its obnoxious.... then the battery dies. a lot. i have the lithium ion charge pack for the x1 controller and i literally have to charge it once per every 4 ds4 charges with about equal play time on both. I think Sony could spend a couple dollars and put a better battery in there. I'd even pay a little bit more knowing the battery and rubber were longer lasting.

OB1Biker3805d ago

I use thumb grips and every thing is absolutely fine for me.

@Septic
The touchpad is great for a few games using it as you can move around the map and just tap it to mark a way point.
Also in the browser it s easier and faster to use the touchpad to type (swipe and tap)

WilDRangeRfc3805d ago

Buy thumbgrips off Amazon bud, they give the sticks much more grip and stop thumbs slipping off as the sticks are not concaved enough, they also stop wear and tear and are dirt cheap £3.99 or even cheaper. They have made me now prefer the DS4 to the X1 controller and I never imagined I would ever say that, well worth it trust me

SolidStoner3805d ago

so you all better have strong hairy hands with "acid sweat"! :D its not sony's fault! j/k

I love the black dual-shocks I got with the system.

I recently picked up a blue one, and it doesn't feel quite the same, like IDK, not as solid? Am I imagining it?

Nekroo913806d ago

I think you're imagining it, because they use the exact model during production, just a different color in the end.

Software_Lover3806d ago

It needs to space the share and option buttons further from the touchpad. That is my only gripe about it right now. I'm always hitting something wrong because they are so close.

Alsybub3806d ago

It's a vast improvement over the DS3 but I really wish I could turn the light bar off; I'm sure that the battery life would be much better without it.

UKmilitia3806d ago

the battery drain fro mthe light is so small it wouldnt make a huge difference.
The main issue with battery is the size is half the ps3 pads battery size.

Summons753806d ago

LEDs use hardly any energy, it wouldn't matter if it was on or off battery would be the same.

Volkama3806d ago

Pretty sure people have opened the pad up and disconnected the light, then confirmed it makes negligable difference to the battery life.

I'd be tempted to open mine up and disconnect the light as well because I would just prefer it to be off, but apparently it's on a ribbon that is shared with I-can't-remember-what feature I wouldn't want to lose.

MasterCornholio3806d ago

Not really. There are people who removed the light and the battery life was only slightly improved. What takes up the most battery life is the touchpad and speaker. Also if your plugging headphones into it that also drains the battery. Lastly the DS4 having a small battery doesn't help but there is a way to replace it with the DS3s battery to get improved battery life.

1nsomniac3806d ago

Did no one take any electronics classes at school. Several LEDs can run simultaneously off a single small battery 24/7/365 for several years for anything upto a decade before draining the battery fully.

There's no reason why sony couldn't switch it off completely but there's no need so why bother. If people have issues with the reflection then that's another issue but I wouldn't worry about battery usage.

Volkama3806d ago (Edited 3806d ago )

Sony have actually come out and said they cannot switch it off completely as there is no "off" control they can send it. The dimming options that are available now are the best they can offer.

This is speculative on my part, but I suspect they just don't have any method to update the firmware on the controllers.

Dark_king3806d ago

@Volkama I doubt they cant update the controller firmware they could for the ps3's dual shock.Seems like they would make sure they could with the ps4's also.

Alsybub3806d ago

Fair enough. I shall consider myself educated.

I think the rubber issue of the DS4 sticks was fixed (or improved) by a revision in mid 2014. My PS4 was bought in June 2014 and the sticks are still solid. My only issue with the DS4 is the battery life; I get only about 4 hrs when I play games that use the speaker.

The PS4 DualShock 4 Back Button Attachment is a great upgrade at a great price

The PS4's DualShock 4 controller now has two more buttons with the addition of the Back Button Attachment. The $30 accessory is the perfect complement to the original controller and adds two buttons. The design is a little bulky, but it's still a great accessory for the price.

This thing is getting stellar reviews. What would be it's best use (I am not a competative online gamer).

Abnor_Mal1985d ago (Edited 1985d ago )

I'm planning to get one, as I said from the beginning it will be great for them I play shooting games and have to aim and hold my breath at the same time using the right stick for both. Same for running with the left stick and then having to press and hold the same stick to sprint. I'm always in fear that the stick will snap when I do so. Plus for the price of thirty dollars I'd that is still the retail price o the U.S. then it's not a steep price to pay for added comfort and continued longevity of the conteoller.

BlackDoomAx1985d ago

You can let your thumbs on the sticks all the time. Useful in most games.

WickedLester1985d ago

For me it will be using them as the L1 and R1 buttons. This will eliminate the index finger movement, going from L2 and R2.

rainslacker1984d ago

We're apparently getting a whole bunch of them at work, so likely I'll be able to snag one to bring home. Sometimes my job has nice perks.:)

TFJWM1985d ago

PS5 controllers will have this built in. It will allow ps4 controllers to have the same functionality and work with the PS5.

HICK1985d ago

Do you have a link to this information? Or are you just speculating?

Kumakai1985d ago (Edited 1985d ago )

Pretty cool. I’ll probably pick up two.

Contrary to the article tho, the biggest advantages of the ms elite controller and the paddle buttons but the ability to control the expo curves of the sticks (response time) and store a second profile to a button position so you can be snappy for FPS games and slower for racing type games or whatever at the flick of a switch. You can also adjust the throw length of the triggers on the Elite. So doesn’t really put them on the same page but still - seems like a great ds4 add-on.

deadfrag1984d ago

Very true! But people that are saying contrary and putting this in the same level has having a Pro Controller most likely never player with a Pro Controller like the Elite or the Astro!

lio_convoy1985d ago

The word "great" was used twice in a single sentence. Was it too hard for the author to come up with another adjective? Okay, Gensie, this might help you out. http://adjectivesstarting.c...

SamPao1985d ago

I think that was on purpose. The usage of the same adjective twice gives the sentence a tone that cannot be achieved by using different ones. It gives the word more focus and is also very often used in this case.
So yeah
Whatever

Kubark1984d ago

Believe me folks, this a tremendous upgrade at a great price. The incredible men and women who created this attachment, let me tell you folks, these people are incredible. It's going to HUGE I tell you, YUGE.

AshleeEmerson1980d ago

We are Gamers... Is it really that serious?

PS4's Back Button Attachment Is Impressive, Comfortable, and May Tease the PS5

The DualShock 4's new accessory works well, and hopefully sets the stage for things to come.

Double_O_Revan1985d ago

I really wish they released this sooner. Seems cool. But it's really late in the PS4's life

GamerRN1985d ago

But didn't everyone say the buttons on the back of the Elite controller weren't needed?

Palitera1985d ago

Most people don't even care about whatever irrelevant thing is this "Elite controller".

UnholyLight1984d ago

@Palitera to consider the Elite controller irrelevant is a massive oversight

frostypants1984d ago (Edited 1984d ago )

No, everyone didn't say that. I might have, but then I won't be getting this upgrade either. I'm fine with the existing setup. But I won't knock people who prefer it.

bouzebbal1984d ago

I'm just worried about the battery life.. I wish it came with built in battery to help enhance controller's battery life

Flewid6381985d ago (Edited 1985d ago )

There are people with long backlogs only halfway thru PS3. PlayStation as a brand is simply a legacy platform now that stretches beyond just the consoles. This attachment will probably bleed into next gen anyway.

darthv721984d ago

This is to extend the functionality of the DS4 to work with the PS5. And it is likely the DS5 will have something like this built in. At least you will already have a controller to use as a 2nd player (unless the PS5 comes with 2). It is making the controller forward compatible.

bouzebbal1984d ago

That's a way for them to test the market, and get some feedback before they finalize DS5 design

AnubisG1985d ago

I don't see the point of this. Maybe it's useful for some people but for me, there is no point.

RazzerRedux1985d ago

I like using pedals instead of LS and RS which I've always found awkward. But yeah....to each their own.

bouzebbal1984d ago

Or street fighter.. I always hated using special attack with L1 always found it awkward cause it's located same side as the dpad.
The other cool thing, still in fighting games is I can have light medium high punches kicks at once!!!!!!!!

TrueMetal1985d ago

It's great for Souls/Bloodborne games since you can run and roll without removing your right thumb from the analog stick.

TFJWM1985d ago

My guess is you can use ps4 controllers on ps5 and this will match up with ps5 controller.

AnubisG1985d ago

I didn't think of that. That would make sense.

Bathyj1984d ago

If go a step further and say if this attachment is successful which it looks like it will be, it's hard to believe it won't be integrated natively into the PS5 controller

BlackDoomAx1985d ago

Because you play games than must be on mobile devices too. How 2 more well placed customizable buttons can't be useful ?

AnubisG1984d ago

Because the DS4 is just perfect as it is. However, some guys have brought up some good points that I didn't think of so how knows?

FinalFantasyFanatic1984d ago

It'd be fine for me if they added extra buttons, but it just remaps existing ones, so I don't really care for it.

AnubisG1984d ago

I was thinking the same.

Muzikguy1984d ago

I keep thinking how I'd map the options button to the right one and people don't seem to like that idea. I just never liked where the options button is on the controller. I could see the other one being great for L3. I'm going to get at least one
