Why Don't You Own a Wii U?

Admittedly the title is presumptious, so if you do own a Wii U already, then that’s great to hear; this article will probably just reinforce what you already know.

If you don’t because of financial reasons, then obviously that’s a perfectly good reason.

But if you don’t just… because, or if you’re sitting on the fence, then GamersFTW give you a few reasons why the Wii U should sit alongside your PS4 or Xbox One as your treasured second console

Yep I'd agree with that. Getting a Wii U now means you can enjoy the wealth of Big N first-party titles out now, and look forward to future giants like Zelda Wii U later in the year!

My MAIN reason for not owning a WiiU right now, is very simple. Pricing.

Nintendo rarely drops the price on their best games, so even after 2 years orso, games like Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 are still around 45-50 euro here in Holland.

I'm not saying those games aren't worth 50 euro. I'm sure they are. However, for 50 euro I can also choose to pick up 3-5 must-have games from the bargain-bin for the consoles I do already have.

So that's an easy choice for now.

There are also other reasons why I don't own a WiiU (yet), like the region-locked software and hardware, the very small HDD, the extra expenses you will need for the peripherals, the online experience/environment, the outdated hardware, the lack of proper 3rd party support and mainstream-games, etc etc, but main reason for now is simply the price for the games.

Nintendo has simply priced itself out of my comfort-zone.

I'm am REALLY excited about some of the games already out for the WiiU, and even more excited about some of the upcoming games, and I'm sure I'll play them all SOME day, but if those prices don't go down in the near future, then I won't be playing them anytime soon.

Even with the 3DS having a sparse lineup this year, buying games for 4 different platforms gets expensive.

See thats the problem if it isn't the price its either because people are waiting on a certain game to come out (Zelda, X, Star Fox) had Nintendo priced the console right and had some of their big franchises from the get go we would've had a whole different scenario. ;)

Unfortunately i doubt that'll change... New Super Mario Bros on DS (a 10 year old game) still sells for nearly full price.

It doesnt apply to me since i buy anything i want at launch, but thats definitely a barrier that negates the cheapness of the system.

My only concern is that since Nintendo is being so slow with the price drops that by the time it hits 200$ their next console will almost be out and if it's backwards compatible then there'll be little reason to buy the Wii U.

The sad problem is that being a fan of Japanese games, there is probably a longer list of games I want to enjoy playing that I will never get the chance to than ones actually available to buy in the UK. Region locked software plus no plans to localize games like the latest Fatal Frame have almost made me want to avoid the Wii U on principle.

A wiiU is mainly ideal for those who enjoy Mario and Nintendo's first party games and if that is not enough to keep you satisfied for hours on end, then don't buy it. Get a ps4 or xbone. Especially if you also enjoy your 3rd party games.

Because I don't like platformers or games without proper story (racing/fighting). Only thing I'm looking forward is Xenoblade X, but 1 game isn't enough to justify purchase.

I don't own one because I see little reason to own one. I've gotten my fill of Nintendo platformers on 3DS and couldn't care less about Zelda, Fatal Frame and Platinum's games. Xenoblade looks great, but one game isn't worth $200+.

For many it's the price (its too high) and for others it's the lack of 3rd party multiplats. If any of the games currently out hasn't persuade you to buy one yet then I doubt anything releasing later would do much to change that. ;)

Yes, I'm getting a Wii U with my income tax in a few weeks. I'll wait to get PS4 around spring time or something and hopefully both consoles will compliment each other.

My 360 backlog is too full. Eventually the Wii U might be the way to go because it seems like the ps4 and x1 barely function without internet updates, patches, or whatever else they try to make you do before you can just PLAY THE GAME. Super annoying.

yea but the wiiu has updates too, and they are multple times longer than the ps4 at least even if they are smaller updates. Though i love the wiiu, the game pad is way better than i though it would be. Way better than remote play on the vita.

I don't know where you get the idea that updates are long I barely notice the Wii U updates as it updates itself?

More importantly, I rarely have a piece of software having to update itself with fixes every time I turn it on.

Major price drop won't happen, $250 maybe likely but I see no lower by end of year. As for a redesign, nothing they do will be huge, the install base is not big enough to split with new features like the new 3ds and the system is slim already and the gamepad does not have much room for changes other than small improvements.

Because Nintendo went full arrogant this gen thinking that by putting any gimmick, people would buy it like in the Wii days. But people opened their eyes on time and refused to give them their money and that's people's rights for not buying wiiu.

This same website has been desperately peddling the Wii U for quite a while now. I wonder if Nintendo is actually paying them for the glowing Wii U marketing? Sure seems like it.

As for why I don't have a Wii U yet, its very simple. The hardware is cheap, underpowered, and lacking in even the most basic features, and the game library is very unappealing. Unless you're into the usual rehashed Nintendo games, there just isn't much worth bothering with on this console, at all. And if you don't buy into the gamepad gimmick, which is awkward, bulky, and distracting (and has terrible battery life), then its easily skipped.

Either the PS4 or XB1 is a much better choice, if you want a true next-gen console. Wii U is really just a very late last-gen console, nothing more.

I disagree with absolutely everything you said, but I'll only point out how funny your comment regarding the Gamepad's battery life is, when the Dualshock 4 has a very similar battery life. At least the Gamepad has a HUGE screen on it. What's the Dualshock's excuse?

Yes my PS4 has a lot of features. The thing is I don't use half of them. I use Netflix and other streaming services but my wiiu does the same thing better. I also love how every game on my PS4 has some BS online play to it because I have to pay for it. Anyway, the wiiu plays games....and is a gaming console...

1- The next Nintendo console will be out in a year or two.

2- I don't have the time for multiple consoles. Usually one just sits there untouched for most of the year until it ggets a must have game.

3- Even if I was gonna get it a new console it would be an XB1 first. The Wii U is expensive for 50 dollars more I can by an Xbox One.

4-Outside of Zelda all Nintendo game are pretty much the same thing over and over.

5- Outside of Zelda no Nintendo games really interest me, never have except Pokemon and I've long grown out of that.

I do own a Wii U, it's the best gaming console of the generation by far. It only needs a new Metroid and F-Zero to be on par with the SNES, N64, and Gamecube as the best consoles ever.

A few things for me...

The games on the platform don't appeal to me. Yeah I enjoy Mario but I'm old school. I'll break out my NES,SNES,N64,GC,Wii and play through them again. Most agree that these games are timeless and honestly, the WiiU look like more of what I already have.

The one hope I had was the Zelda demo which doesn't exist. Was so disappointed in the actual WiiU Zelda. Not saying it will be a bad game, only it's not the Zelda I wanted.

Lastly, that tablet is a no go in my house. If Nintendo allowed us to buy another, I'd have bought one day 1 for my kids. So the alternative is to simply buy two regular controllers and ditch the tablet to avoid issues, the whole point of the console is the tablet so it's not worth it....

I have one. And I like it; I don't love it, not yet anyway. Zelda's the last cherry on top for the system and if you don't buy one next year you never will – even past the hope of another Metroid. The gamepad and the tech is alright, but what I do love are the games. And that's great enough.

...Why are people waiting for a price drop for Wii U? It's not going to happen. Iwata already said that at the beginning of last year. Wii U is selling at a loss and Nintendo is no longer concerned about acquiring market share, it is just focused on achieving profitability while it can with the Wii U's software and hardware sales (as well as other ways like with the launch of Amiibo). Nintendo is the only platform holder that is purely a game company, whereas Sony and Microsoft have other major sources of streaming revenue. They are not going to throw tons of money at it to try to solve a problem that won't likely be solved by a mere price cut. It's purely a Nintendo box with ineffective system-seller features and no major third party support left as of last year, so a change in marketing strategy cannot really do much to change that fact for Wii U.

Retailers have already tried offering the Wii U at different prices throughout the year ranging from as low as $250, $275 with incentives (2 bundles even came with 2 games), and if that didn't work, then why would Nintendo try to make it official price cut for as low as that? Best Buy had a $360 deal with 4 good games that came with the console including Smash, 3D World, Nintendo Land and DKC:TF. Also, some retailers had good deals going for games for $15-30 including Wind Waker HD and Mario Kart 8 during the holiday season, so consumers clearly missed out on that too.

Nintendo's been offering Wii U Deluxe with Nintendo land for $200 from its online store for quite some time now. I bought one earlier last year, and even though it's referred to as "refurbished," the console units are actually in brand new condition because retailer didn't want to order more of them since they weren't selling in the first place. I don't know if Nintendo has currently replenished their stock, but they have done so in the past.

You say that as if consumers should feel guilty or be ashamed for not supporting the Wii-U like it's their fault. That's nonsense. The market dictates what they want, not the other way around.

The bottom line is that Nintendo made a gross miscalculation with the design of the Wii-U. The design of the Wii-U is a direct result of tablet panic. So many "experts" and analysts were convinced that tablet gaming was taking over the gaming industry and that consoles were on their way out. As a result, Nintendo ended up producing an underpowered/overpriced "stop gap" system with a ridiculously small hard drive, a terrible hybrid tablet controller, a completely archaic network service, a clunky user interface, and almost no major 3rd party support. Not to mention the fact that the name "Wii-U" was an awful choice for a new console name that has created utter confusion with a lot of consumers.

Nintendo's stubbornness to march to their own drum and try to dictate their quirky/weird business model to consumers has finally caught up with them. Instead of trying to force gamers to accept what they were trying to do, Nintendo should have listened to developers and gamers and given them what they wanted, not alienate them. Yes there will always be that dedicated group of Nintendo fans that will carry that torch to their graves but that number is shrinking. As each new generation of gamers come along, fewer and fewer of them have the sentimental ties to Nintendo that so many older gamers do. Eventually, no one will care about Mario or Zelda anymore, at least not enough to sustain Nintendo's current business model.

I went into my local game shop yesterday to look for a Wii U pro controller and what i saw was shocking, in the Wii U section there were only 6 games 6! while both sides of the shop were dedicated to the blue and green of Xbox vs. PS4.

How do game shops expect to sell Wii U consoles and games if the shelf space is one foot in size?
I failed to buy the controller because they hadn't had it in stock for a year.

They didn't have any Wind Waker or Mario Kart either.

No matter how many times people say that the WiiU has a fantastic lineup, i really only find Bayonetta interesting. Besides consoles are long term investments, I don't see the wii u being around for a long time, I'm sure first party titles will be around but I don't care much for their franchises in any case.
