Firmware v2.40 status

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We'll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

So that must explain why I'm not having problems with my 60gb or 40gb that I updated at 9am EST.

i don't think it's an astronomical issue rippled worldwide. i think there is a small but significant percentage number of people experiencing the problems. at least they're looking into it and working on a fix.

I got my 60 gig PS3 roughly 4 months after launch and I'm not experiencing any problems with the 2.4 update.

Nothing's perfect especially a huge update like this one. Good luck to those who have problems.

you don't pull the update if only a limited number of people are having problems, There's something that sonys not saying, but oh well I got mind, LOL.... I don't even play the system and I got the update LOL

it seems they are being extra careful and not taking any chances. they have been having good press lately and there is no need to ruin it.

The only differance is this one was pulled. Typical marketing spin, if this only affected a few systems the update would still be available. Obviously they found a problem if they yanked the update from the servers.

$5 says when everything is said and done Sony will back track and say there was no problem and the high demand for this update caused the server to crash.

51% is the majority. We all know that number would be bs though. 10% of the people being affected is getting closer. If there are 10 million PS3's and 10% brick off an update, that means 1 million people can have a failed system from an update. I still think that number is high though. If even 1% have a problem, that still means 100,000 people could brick during an update.

When the system was new and people had this issue it wasn't so bad since they were under warranty. Now, many people aren't. Maybe it's just me, but to me the acceptable number of bricked consoles from an update should be zero. I honestly think Sony needs to re-think the way they update the firmware and make it more idiot proof if user error can alter the outcome. I also think they need some sort of roll back feature to protect the console in case the update doesn't work properly.

With the holiday weekend coming up, Sony could have said frack it, we will fix it when we come back. Instead, they are working around the clock so those of you who have not had the chance to get 2.4 can do so. Kudos to Sony for that. I hope they get the problem fixed soon so you guys can enjoy 2.4 and Sony employees can have a nice holiday weekend.

R.I.P. 60gb Dec. 22, 2006-July 2, 2008. To those of you who think that the FW 2.40 bug is fake, i am proof that its very very real. This morning i update my 60gb ps3 with great excitement but after the update had installed itself it just froze on the screen with the swirly lines(not sure what its called). So I called SONY they weren't much help. Then i remembered that when i purchased my ps3 at my local best buy i also bought a 2 year warranty. So i returned my bricked ps3 and got a shiny new 80gb MGS4 bundled ps3 w/ ds3 and pain voucher and $25 store credit.THANKS SONY FOR BRICKING MY PS3 :). P.S. Anyone want to buy a Brand new MGS4 sealed. it will be on e-bay in a few, i'm also tossing in the pain voucher(i have both already)

I didn't get a chance to download it yet...but all I have been doing for the past 3 weeks is MGS4 offline...so, for the first time since I bought my PS3 in early 2007, I am fine waiting a few more days...

60GB no problems here. to be expected with the amount of people getting the update. people have to realize that it is a computer program. all programs have bugs that is why computers will never rule the world!!!!!!!!
