Blizzard Confirms Unannounced Fourth Game, Next-Gen MMO Not Diablo 3

via Shacknews:

"Despite ongoing efforts with StarCraft II, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and Diablo III, PC developer Blizzard has confirmed that it has another MMO in the works.

"There is still one unknown project," Blizzard executive VP Rob Pardo revealed to OnlineWelten.com during the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational. "We have another development team."

Pardo affirmed that Blizzard's recent job listings for an "unannounced next-gen MMO" were not related to Diablo III. The company had previously stated that the project was not a World of Warcraft expansion either.

Fans have long speculated that Blizzard may follow the ultra-successful World of Warcraft with a World of StarCraft MMO. Others believe that the project could be a new franchise.

And as for a release date on any of the three known titles? "We ship the games when they're ready," Pardo commented. "You guys know this.""

iceman28855778d ago

I just don't think they are that interesting...

That being said, I would make an exception for a Starcraft MMO.

N4Gisbiased5778d ago

Oh lord I need a new pair of pants.

Please let it be Starcraft Ghost for consoles. Recently they said the project was not dead merely on hiatus.

Here are the current updates from the web:

"Since the halt in Ghost's production, only sporadic news has been heard on it. At BlizzCon in 2007, StarCraft creator Chris Metzen hinted that elements of Ghost's story may appear in the recently announced StarCraft II. Metzen further stated that he believed that Ghost had an excellent storyline that may be told in future novels following from DeCandido's Nova. Earlier in June, Rob Pardo, one of the lead developers at Blizzard Entertainment, indicated that there still was an interest in finishing Ghost. At the D.I.C.E. Summit in February 2008, Blizzard's president Mike Morhaime and Rob Pardo gave a presentation on the company's history. In it they listed the games that they had cancelled, which did not include Ghost. When questioned about this, Blizzard's co-founder Frank Pearce explained that it simply was not in the company's focus at the time due to a finite amount of development resources."

imagine a Starcraft Ghost game set in the starcraft universe with the infinity ward team handling the mechanics.... i think Starcraft Ghost is still on its way... only much better than anyone could anticipate!

morganfell5778d ago (Edited 5778d ago )

I know. This trailer here:
http://www.gametrailers.com...

In the scene on the ship nothing is really happening with Nova but she comes across as a total badass. The novel was pretty good - all of the SC titles have been good and I would love to see a serious take on things.

Seraphim5778d ago

Lol, my thoughts as well. Ghost, BRING BACK THE GHOST!! The game looked great on PS2/XBOX when it was shown. Just imagine how sweet it look on next gen consoles. @@... It was a great concept, great looking game, and needs to be reborn...

Spike475778d ago

I just wish it could be free to play.

Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky have to be up there. We're lucky and cursed, equally, to have games that can be updated now. For folks old enough to remember the Sega/SNES into PS1 and even 2 eras, if a game came out that was half baked (*cough*Angel of Darkness*cough*) that was it, no redemption. At the same time, having the option for updates shouldn't be an excuse for half assing games.

thorstein86d ago

I remember when the Nintendo Seal of Approval meant something.

All those games had to release without bugs.

Comebacks shouldnt be a thing in videogames. Just saying.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27163d ago (Edited 163d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris163d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster163d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris163d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT163d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster163d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Extermin8or3_163d ago

This right here is the fucking problem.

Diablo III - Still a Huge Draw in the Face of Diablo IV

Diablo III still works on modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and remains hugely playable a decade after initial release.

Are you comparing a continuously improved 10+ years old masterpiece with the... beta of an unreleased game?

kevco33394d ago

Heh, yeah. There's no comparison in here! Its a commentary on how III is still very playable over a decade later.
