Samsung U28UD590D 4K Ultra High Definition Monitor - Hardware Review | Chalgyr's Game Room

Chalgyr's Game Room writes:

Samsung. The name exudes quality. Say it with me, "Samsung." From their Galaxy phones and tablets to their absolutely stunning televisions (every television I have owned in the last ten years has been a Samsung) and monitors to their amazing laptops, Samsung is one of the best, if not the best manufacturer of high-quality electronics. My first computer that I built back in the 90's had a Samsung SyncMaster CRT monitor that I used all the way up until I purchased my first LCD monitor. I have long been a fan of Samsung as their electronics have been of the utmost quality and have lasted me longer than nearly any other electronic device that I have owned so I am confident when I say that they are built to last. In fact my current 'gaming rig' is a Samsung Chronos 7 that is a veritable workhorse that can still play a majority of current games at high settings without suffering any hiccups and it is nearing on two years old.

Every TV I have had in the last 10 years has been Samsung too. And I've had at least 5. Not sure I'd say they're "built to last".

Slick monitor though, overclockers UK are doing them for something like £360 for black Friday.

Id love to get into 4k gaming, unfortunately i think its still in its infancy. For starters i would like to see more GPUs pushing 8 - 12 GB of memory. Specially with how ridiculous game VRAM requirements have gotten to.

This was reviewed by a different member of the team than myself, but I have only had one Samsung personally - a 52" LCD television that has been flawless in nearly 8 years of ridiculously high use. I know Robert's got a few different Samsung devices, but hasn't had quite as much luck as I have. Good to know on Overclockers - nice share!

I've mostly stuck those past year with Panasonic Plasmas . At least the models that proved good with input lag , and provided a quality , especially with colors , that i didnt find in many lcd or led models .

But i must admit that Samsung is very alluring right now with models like this one .

And with any input lag issues from years ago mostly dealt with

I don't I am ready for 4k. 1440 for me...

I would need like two titan zs to play 4k 60fps maxed.

bumnut3804d ago

1440 is good enough and not too demanding, its a huge improvement over 1080.

We have 6 different brands of tvs in the house, 55" samsung, 40" visio, 32" toshiba, 27-32" seiki. Seiki is the worst they bought it because it was cheap and the samsung is best. Then we have a sd panasonic and a old floor model sylvania.

I have a lot of time for Sammy products. 3 of the TVs in my house are Samsung with the main TV being one from the higher end of their range and they are all fabulous. The older TV sees a lot of action and is a good 4 or 5 years old so cant grumble too much.

I cannot see me getting into 4k gaming unfortunately, the last year or so I have found my interest in pc gaming on the wane as I dont like sitting at the desk and cannot hook it up to my tv as its in a different room. I have seen some 4k stuff at a pals and the visual quality was staggering.

GearSkiN3805d ago

I'd love to get it for my ps4 and xbox one, but doubt would make a difference.

Amuro3805d ago

if there's a difference it will be worse image quality due to the insane upscaling from 1080p. These kind of TV's are only good for people that are planing on hooking up a high-end rig to them.

Volkama3805d ago (Edited 3805d ago )

Well that's not true. Even the most simplistic upscale that renders each pixel as a block of 4 would improve the image quality, because the gap between pixels is so much smaller. A more advanced upscale only improves it further. Image quality will be good.

The real trade off is latency from all that processing.

Baka-akaB3805d ago (Edited 3805d ago )

From experience it actually looks stunning with upscale . I havent seem games looking worse from the upscale ... the issue is latency depending on the tv

GearSkiN3805d ago

So would it improve it, since max setting on console games is 1080, what exactly would it add if you buy a 4k TV, I know how pc games have options to go higher, would make more sense... I just need a good tv monitor for gaming since I travel around, didn't viewsonic release one not too long ago... Any recommendations.

Samsung, LG, Panny, and Vizio make the best bang for your buck for hdtvs.

jc123805d ago

LG and Vizio certainly offer the "best bang for your buck". Conversely though, Samsung and Panasonic - while great products - are not good value buys; their high-end products are typically expensive as F.

You can get the Seiki 50" 4k for $399 right now at Tigerdirect.

Note this is a TRUE 120hz TV. So you can game at 1080p/120 if you wish.

I have the 39 inch version ($299/339 before rebate), and it can do...

1080p/120 (actually can do 1080p/136)
1440p/80
1800p/52
4k/30 (but can actually do 37)

It doesn't have all the extra stuff other tv's have. It can't do 4k/60, but that's new. Even the newest UHDTV's are basically obsolete, and even the ones yet to be released are too. So if you want 4ktv, don't buy an expensive one. Some companies even admit their expensive new 4ktv's aren't compatible with netflix 4k. So go cheap and then you can afford to wait for the good ones to be invented and drop in price.

It'll take a couple of years before we truly see all the standards set for 4k. Higher bit color, a new bluray/streamiing 4k standard, etc. Let alone 120hz (and an even newer standards...so two past what we currently have). That's the time 4k will really be good. But for now, things like that Seiki at tigerdirect, or the rumored 4k/60 from them for $499 coming out soon-ish should be considered.

So the 4k gaming is a bit limited, but given the set's other abilities, it far exceeds pretty much any other HDTV/UHD for PC gaming.

Also it doesn't take multiple titan-z's to game at 4k. A GTX 970 will work nicely, within reason for 30-37 hz/fps. Works good for 1800p/52, 1440/80, and 1080p/120. Plenty of good games can hit those framerates at those resolutions with a single GTX 970. Fairly decent settings too, sometimes near the top besides AA.
