Assassin's Creed Unity Review - Brought a knife to a gunfight [GH]

Gamer Headlines writes: As I’ve already discussed in detail though, this is just a taste of much of the sloppy work to be found in Assassins Creed Unity. With core concepts like combat, stealth and climbing all suffering heavily, plus oddly lengthy load times, you have to wonder what the hell has gone wrong during development. More patches are most certainly incoming that could fix the unresponsive climbing and combat controls, but there’s no fixing the generic tasks that plague the over-stuffed map. Fingers crossed co-op can be salvaged though. At least the main story missions have been fleshed out with additional objectives that have a clear impact on the mission itself. For now though, it may be worth checking out Assassin’s Creed Rogue instead.

The Actual game outside of any glitches is a nice improvement for the series.

Nothing mind blowing, but there are improvements here and there and a lot of little details added that maybe haven't been talked about.

I've yet to experience a bug or glitch that made the game worse in any way. A few funny ones though, but nothing I haven't seen in other games.

I think this is getting blown out of proportion right now because the "gaming media" literally has nothing else to talk about at the moment....

It's the new " hot crisis", or whatever they talk about from week to week.

It's not perfect at all....I'd give it a 8.3/10 so far.

It's a solid game, but it's nothing amazing.

Yep, my experience is the same. I'm left wondering why the game is getting so much controversy.

My biggest issues with the game are the damn blue circle that forms around you any time you are in a crowd (which is much of the time in this game since there are so many NPCs). It also causes the color to drain out of your face and you are left looking like an ashen-colored dead person. I can turn off all other HUD elements so why can't I turn this one off, Ubisoft? Please fix it in a future patch.

The other issue I have are the NPCs. My feelings are kind of torn on the whole NPC thing. On one hand the number of NPCs really does make the city feel alive and visually impressive looking. My problem, though, is that the sheer number of them results in glitches, as well as collision detection and pathfinding issues. I can't help but feel that if they had gone for maybe half the number of NPCs it still would have been effective at making the city feel lively, while also drastically cutting down on the number of glitches.

Other than that the game has been solid for me and runs well. I actually quite like the game itself. The gameplay, missions, customizability, narrative and presentation are all top-notch in my opinion.

I do think this game is getting undeserved hate.

I havnt had problems. Maybe it's rare. I've seen a couple crowd glitches but it doesn't affect the gameplay. 2 x the framerate dipped and a few times my traversal has gone wrong.

To me though, it doesn't bother me. Once u learn how to travel and don't press the wrong buttons, u r fine.

To me, this is the best AC to date. Everything is better, it's Co op, and Paris is a marvel. Not sure about the full story. It may not end up being as good as Ezio's, but overall, despite the 900p, it's quite good. And i am usually quite harsh.

chaldo3600d ago

Exactly. The bugs are the reason why this game is getting low scores.

Seriously is the best AC game to date imo.

DragonKnight3600d ago

I've had some small issues like falling through the world, dead enemies having seizures, people moving like The Flash, people appearing out of the sky, and one area has a chest that won't appear yet. Other than that, no problems.

I'm having an absolute blast with the game despite not being able to have more than one playthrough going at once. 6/10 is an abhorrent, undeserved score that's definitely to cause controversy.

they should do this for all broken games. maybe then publishers will sharpen up

The_Kills3600d ago

Thank the lord someone mentions the horrid climbing in a negative light. All other flop reviews praise it simply because you can descend easier, as if that is the end-all be-all to the climbing.

Bookmarked for legit review.

I Played Assassin’s Creed Unity Almost 10 Years Later. It’s (Kinda) Spectacular

Shaz from GL writes: "Assassin’s Creed Unity is looked at as one of the worst in Ubisoft’s iconic franchise. But playing it nearly 10 years later reveals it may just be the best"

Do the NPCs still randomly levitate every now and then? Even years later I noticed they hadn't patched that out

Honestly I loved the PS4 ACs. I'd love next gen ports of Black Flag, Unity and Syndicate

Why Assassin’s Creed Unity remains one of the best games in the series

GF365: "Since the first Assassin’s Creed game, there have been entries up until now. There are more than a few titles that are far from an ideal stealth game. Let’s discuss why 2014’s Assassin’s Creed Unity is one of the best games in the series."

Glitchy as hell and flat story, nah this aint it. AC2, brotherhood and 4 were amazing games in every respective

Furesis672d ago

Yeah i would say brotherhood and 4 were the best for me. I have not played the new ones and Unity was my last one. Seems like i made a good choice.

DarXyde672d ago

I gave up after Revelations. Just couldn't bring myself to care anymore and I got burned out of the gameplay.

Definitely agree on 2 and Brotherhood though. Great games.

YourMommySpoils672d ago

A Ubisoft AC game that's not glitchy? That will be the day.

Knightofelemia673d ago

After constant glitches Arno being boring nah I am good I skipped Unity. I will always like the Ezio trilogy, Black Flag, Rogue, Odyssey, Syndicate. I use to love the franchise but now it feels stale and boring. But my list of favorite entries into the franchise will vary from other players favorite entries.

RaidenBlack672d ago

Odyssey is a really well-made RPG game ... but it ain't a proper AC game, even though its part of the lore

ToddlerBrain672d ago

It’s funny because, at launch, it was universally panned for being unplayable. It’s a great game that holds up today. I’m glad they fixed it.

staticall672d ago

The only good things i remember from Unity are pretty graphics and really good descending mechanics (even though it sometimes didn't make much sense, when your character can drop down from like 10 meter height onto a flagpole perfectly).

Game is glitchy to this day, i was playing in it years after the release date (with all the DLCs) and it's still broken. You had to reload missions too often for my taste (characters do not spawn, you fall through the floor, getting stuck in falling/sitting/aiming animation, hidden blade stop working, assassination target running away at the start of the mission). Story was meh, searching for all the treasures wasn't enjoyable at all. Coop was pretty much useless, i've beaten every coop mission in solo. Helix rifts were awful as well.

Not saying i hate this game or anything, but it got too many problems.

Assassin's Creed (i know it's a controversial opinion) and Assassin's Creed 2 are still great to this day.

anast672d ago

Unity was okay. I prefer Syndicate and Origins.
