Assassin's Creed: Unity Review - Death Never Looked So Pretty - TGC

Chris from The Games Cabin writes: "Ubisoft's insistence that we need a new Assassin's Creed game every year has brought a level of stagnation to the popular open-world stealth adventures, but Assassin's Creed: Unity looks to buck the trend by presenting an entirely fresh approach - but does it live up to the hype? Or has the series fallen on its own blade? Read on for the full Assassin's Creed: Unity review."

Good score. is this the first review?

TheWatercooler1535d ago

It is. And don't trust a thing that comes from this waste of a site.

psvitamanfan1535d ago

And that's why you are only allowed one stupid comment per article. Thank Christ

KingKevo1535d ago

The fact that you do obviously work for the site in question does make your reply useless. Of course you will defend the site no matter what if you have a business relationship with it. So stop attacking others for their opinion, you are the one being offensive and unprofessional. Shame on you.

Btw I agree, the site is not good and the review (no matter how close the score is to the final consensus) can easily be ignored. Just another site trying to get hits by ignoring an embargo. And with all due respect, people might say that that is stupid.

psvitamanfan1535d ago (Edited 1535d ago )

Kingkevo- so one mans opinion cant stand against others? It doesnt matter where a review comes from, they're all opinion.

In fact, I know that many trust smaller sites more than they do the big ones; we're not catering to an audience nor do we pander to the wishes of publishers and score high to keep them sweet.

And with no embargo placed upon us by Ubisoft this review isn't ignoring any embargo or rushing out a review for hits. I got the game over a week ago amd finished up yesterday, so why wait to put out a review? Must I let IGN, Eurogamer and whoever else put theirs out before I do mine? No.

I also have far cry 4 and ac:rogue reviews in the works. Will i be waiting until everyone else publishes their review? Most certainly not, I'll put them out as and when they are completed.

If you feel so strongly against thegamescabin then simply dont read the reviews, it's your choice and I won't hold it against you.

HammadTheBeast1534d ago

Dayum psvitamanfan laying it out.

starchild1534d ago (Edited 1534d ago )

I'm not too familiar with this site, but this was a really good review. The content of the review is exactly the kind of stuff I want to find out about a game, and it is well written too.

The game sounds great. Here are some of the things that stand out to me:

"There are of a course ‘classes’ of enemies, and by that I mean you have your regular grunts who are just waiting to have their throats cut whilst the ‘heavies’ take a bit more skill to kill...I didn’t ever feel over-powered to the extent I did in the aforementioned games, in fact I felt downright vulnerable at times and was forced to scurry away like a rat, lest I be killed."

"Assassin’s Creed: Unity takes a step back from the action, though there’s still plenty of it, and lets your take your time, assessing your surroundings to make the perfect kill."

"Assassination targets are presented in a sandbox type of way, in that you have one fairly large area and your target is somewhere within, usually well guarded and hard to get to."

"Assassinations are good fun too. For purists who like to achieve their targets and collect trophies/achievements you’ll be more than happy with the challenging gameplay on offer."

"Sure you can make a few slip ups and still get to your target, but it’s a lot harder when things don’t go to plan and when everything does go balls up, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to restart the mission and give it another shot, maybe taking the not-so direct approach. That’s the beauty in Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s gameplay. You’re not confined to a strict set of parameters, but instead you’re offered the choice to build your own approach and should you cock it up, you’ve only yourself to blame."

"A lot has been made over the last few weeks about Assassin’s Creed: Unity not running at 60 frames-per-second at 1080p, but guess what? It hardly matters.

Once you’ve reached your first high spot and the camera pans around you, revealing the sprawling city below, you’ll soon forget about resolutions and frame-rates; the game is a beauty.

The inner-city of Paris has been built on a 1:1 scale, if Ubisoft are to be believed. I’m not sure on the accuracy of that statement but I can tell you that the city is huge."

"Walking through the dirty cobbled streets teeming with NPC’s all going about their business looks fantastic. The amount of detail is phenomenal."

"Characters are well designed and move with the grace of a real person, at times tricking the eye into believing your looking at a moving picture of a real person"

"To truly take in the grandeur of Paris you must take to higher ground. From above the smoking streets filled with scum, peasants, soldiers and the decent folk you’ll be greeted with a view that not many games can boast. The draw distance is impressive as you look out over the city, landmarks clearly visible even though they are fair way away."

"To put it simply, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is not just the best looking Assassin’s Creed game to date, but it is definitely a strong contender for the best looking PS4 (possibly Xbox One?) game available at this time. The visual fidelity is remarkable and the attention to the small details in re-creating Paris circa 1700’s is astonishing to say the least."

It sounds excellent. All the major areas that I wanted to see improvement in have indeed been improved. And the graphics look astounding. I have been saying this for a long time, despite the hate from certain gamers, that AC Unity is one of the best looking if not the best looking game so far. Certainly the best looking open world game yet. Can't wait to delve into this game.

@psvitamanfan nobody is questioning your professionalism for posting this review early. You are proving The-Watercoolers point by insulting him. He says the games cabin is a waste of a site. I'm inclined to agree because you people post unprofessional system war fanboy op-eds, or just unprofessional nerd rage op-eds. It's not so much the subject matter that makes them sub par , but the high school dropout writing structure that makes your "articles" hard to distinguish from the ignorant drivel posted in YouTube comment sections.

The fact that you are bickering with the Watercooler shows how classless and unprofessional you are. You should be above that. You're like a pro athlete who gives obscene gestures to a heckling fan.

Freaking Ubisoft and Activision just know how to make 8.0-8.5 games.

retro_1534d ago

What I want to know is this. Is the frame rate smooth on PS4 or slightly stuttery like the XB1 version occasionally was at EGX this year. I'm not slagging off the XB1 version but it was noticable and slightly off putting.

Anyway, that's my question.

Army_of_Darkness1534d ago

Th only thing that makes me question this review is.. where is the gameplay pics?? all I see is concept art??

Solid review.

AC4 saved the series for me personally, so I'm pretty excited for this game...

I love the stories..

Yeah AC4 saved the series with boring Abstergo Employee present day "missions" , crappy hacking mini games. BS . AC4 sucked. It took 1/5 of AC3, the ship missions, and made a game out of it. Everything you did in AC4 was pointless. The game was so easy I beat it without ever upgrading my health or Armor. It's a 6 out of 10. It took me a year to best it because it was so boring and uninteresting.

Baka-akaB1534d ago

Well i agree that i did save the serie . Even if not a main numbered game Revelation wasnt good enough and AC3 was mediocre .

Granted AC4 isnt a good AC game , in the sense that it had to retreat mostly into the one aspect , naval warfare , people enjoyed from AC3 and turn it into a whole game that didnt feel like an assassin game .

But it was still a needed respite and a good experience , breaking away from the tedious AC3 , until a proper sequels , maybe unity arrives .

WolfOfDarknesss1534d ago

Well , I give it 7/10 , I bought the game " Assassins Greed Unity PS4 " Yesterday , it's was an early released in our region , I can tell you this.. game looked amazing and I think it's the best assassins creed so far BUT only there is one Problem ... the frame rate is so Terrible , believe me the frame rate drops under 25 per sec some times , only the cinematic cuts was stabile at 30 per a sec , it's the worst Assassins Creed in frame rate, I can't understand why ?! Graphically , gameplay and story is outstanding beautiful. shame on Ubisoft really , the game should be 30 FPS stabile all the time or 60 FPS because it's on PS4 . it feels that this game is rushed to the market .

kevnb1534d ago

They all had poor performance on the older systems

bunt-custardly1535d ago (Edited 1535d ago )

Good score but What I want to know is how much the reviewer paid for their copy? Oh go on, do tell.

1535d ago
psvitamanfan1535d ago

£75 on gumtree. Standard edition. Worth every penny.

16bitNutritionist1535d ago

Are most games available on Gumtree before their release date? I want games early :)

psvitamanfan1535d ago

Depends, if you're lucky you'll find someone who managed to get an early copy, either through working at one of the big places that stocks them or more likely the small independat game shops who don't really care for street dates, especially if they can make a few quid extra by selling them a day or two early.

bunt-custardly1534d ago

While expensive, I thought it would have been much higher. Thanks.

RealtorMDandDC1534d ago

Don't understand how you have the game already. I will pull your cards and call your review a farce.

-Where's the game play footage, whats the point of a review without a video? Who reviews a game and puts no supporting video content in 2014.

-Only pictures used are Bull Shots that's been on the internet for ever.

-I will call your review a failed attempt and I think you do not have the game.

-Your review sounds like the information you will read on the back of a game cover with slightly worst grammar.

Given that in the space of, what, 1 week, we have GTA 5 "next gen", Far Cry 4, Dragon Age and this coming out, I wouldn't be surprised if Ubisoft ARE in fact pushing the reviews out quickly so people don't realize how close their Far Cry game is as well.

Kind of retarded to have 2 major series come out by the same dev just a week apart.

Scatpants1534d ago

It is imperative that any major releases come out before Black Friday. Any later and you would be throwing away sales. If they released either one too early however they run the risk of people buying games that come out closer to Black friday. That is why late October/early to mid November is packed with games.

GenericNameHere1534d ago

Go read the article. Ubi denied them a review copy, so they had to buy their own.

Orbilator1535d ago

I'll enjoy this assasins creed as long as there are no sailing or at least very few bits.
Pre ordered mine anyways.

CaptainObvious8781535d ago

But I loved the sailing. Galleon battles were the best part.

Scatpants1534d ago

I liked the sailing also, It made it so the assassin gameplay didn't get to stale since it was broken up by the sailing.

ginsunuva1535d ago

Wait what? All the characters have English accents?

SnotyTheRocket1535d ago

I think just Arno has an English accent.

smolinsk1535d ago

No everyone in the game has an English accent, so stupid

Geekman1534d ago

Wouldn't be surprising. Altair didn't have an accent because Ubisoft thought he sounded "cooler" without it.

skulz71535d ago

Main characters have English accents but all ambient noises (i.e the crowd) will be in French

smolinsk1535d ago

Yea but that is also all

_-EDMIX-_1534d ago

LMFAO! NO! I think some of you need to actually read up on what the French Revolutionary war was. Also from the trailers you can very much hear many of the characters have French accents.

They won't make it heavy because some of use clearly don't speak the damn language.

MIND YOU..I DO! AND I'm ok with the choice to go this route.

Ramisabah1535d ago

Ubisoft set out to re-create the series with Assassin's Creed: Unity and they've managed it with flying colours.

A rich story with an impressive amount of content coupled with some of the best visuals on display thus far make Assassin's Creed: Unity a must buy for any fan of the series, or just the open-world genre in general.

It has its shortcoming, thought they're few and far between, enough so that they're almost negligible.

starchild1534d ago

Sounds fantastic. This is one of the games that looks the best to me this year. I have little doubt that I will enjoy it a lot.
