10 Games That Spent the Longest Time in Development

8CN: Delayed games are pretty commonplace, and can happen for any number of reasons. Sometimes game-breaking bugs crop up late in development, maybe the team is having trouble adjusting to new hardware, or maybe the studio simply wants to change the timing of the release for commercial reasons. In any case, most times it just means we'll have to wait a few months longer to get our hands on the game... unlike these ten games, which left fans waiting for a half a decade or more.

The only reason why Shenmue II struggled was because that asshat Peter Moore not only sold out Shenmue, but SEGA/Shenmue fans in general just to get a job at Microsoft. I mean seriously making a deal to have Shenmue II as an exclusive on the Xbox in america sealed the fate of that franchise. If shenmue would have came out on all consoles (including the Dreamcast, the damn mandatory platform it should've been released on) then we would probably already have a Shenmue III by now.

Hoffmann3850d ago

Shenmue 2 was at least released here in Europe for the Dreamcast. Always wondered me why they did not release it in the USA too at the time. Thanks for your comment with that clarification!

MrSwankSinatra3849d ago

Yeah Europe was lucky they got both versions of Shenmue, while the U.S. only got the Xbox verison & Japan got the Dreamcast Version. The Dreamcast version of Shenmue II is superior than than the Xbox version. The way Shenmue was designed was in similar way in how Mass Effect was designed. Where your actions in one game will effect the next game when you transfer your save over. That's what makes the Dreamcast version so much superior, you can't take advantage of that feature in the Xbox version.

Hoffmann3850d ago

That List clearly misses Mother 3 :-)

The development for it started back in 1994 already when it was planned as a SNES game first, shifted later to the Nintendo 64 and while the development of it was pretty advanced they cancelled it and finally released Mother 3 for the Game Boy Advance in 2006.

But for "reasons" only in Japan till today. Am glad fans translated this awesome game.

N4GDgAPc3849d ago

Well guess Final Fantasy XV will be on the top 10 list when it finally comes out.

GearsOfWar3849d ago

Too Human was such a letdown for me. I had a lot of hope in it being a great game only to be presented with a mediocre experience at best. Still, I played it, only to be reminded of the lost potential.

I'm not sure if we'll ever get a sequel but I really hope time is better spent than on the original.

ATi_Elite3849d ago (Edited 3849d ago )

Where are we at on that silly half life 3 or episode 3 game.

Let's see Half Life 2 was 2004
Episode 2 was 2007

Seven years and not a single peep polygon or pixel. Looking forward to Day of Defeat 2 and Ricochet 2 before we see a 3 from Valve Time. Lol

How does Street Fighter 2 not break the top 21? Literally spearheaded a litany of clones for years and cemented a genre that continues to be relevant to this day. Some were such a blatant rip off that it led to lawsuits (See Fighters History).

Also I agree that BG3 is one of the greatest games of all time and the game with the most depth that I have ever experienced. In fact, it’s probably my favorite game of all time. That said, I have not seen its influence on the industry yet because there is nothing that’s been introduced that is truly comparable to the breadth of the experience imo. I anticipate and hope that it will become one of the most influential games of all-time because playing it has spoiled me.

Profchaos38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

I don't get it I just played the first game on the ps4 about six months ago and for its time it was probably well regarded for bringing a cinematic feel to gaming but I feel like there were far more engaging RPG's and titles that deserve it more.

For example I find Doom is likely the most influential game of all time for shooters, Mario for platformers the list goes on.

I'm not saying shenmue doesn't deserve praise just was it honestly that good there's a ton of moments in the game where you have to sit the controller down and walk away from the game for an hour for the in game clock to get to 8pm or something there's only so many times I can play space harrier as a distraction

CrimsonWing6938d ago

So why can’t we get an ending?

FinalFantasyFanatic37d ago

Did Shenmu 3 not end the series? I have the all of the games on PC, but I haven't played them yet.

jznrpg37d ago

It did not. It needs 2-3 more games he said to finish, I believe. Heard rumors of 4 but that’s as a little while ago.

Popsicle37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Very good point. So influential that the 3rd entry had to be funded by fans (sarcasm). I really enjoyed Shenmue 1 and 2 in 99 and early 2000s, but by the time the 3rd entry was released, I had moved on.

JEECE38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Shouldn't the first shooter to use the standard dual analog control scheme be on the list? As far as I can tell that was Medal of Honor on the PS1 in 1999, although I'm open to correction if someone knows of an earlier game that had it (and no I don't count N64 games where you had to hold two controllers, haha). That control scheme, which was apparently far from obvious to devs at first, has become a default for essentially every 3D game that doesn't have a fixed camera (assuming you aren't using M/K).

CrimsonWing6937d ago

My understanding was Alien Resurrection on PS1, but that’s literally me not googling before answering m and just pulling random facts I had stored in the ol’ noggin’

JEECE37d ago

That came out after Medal of Honor, but yeah it was among the first, and it may have been the first to have that as the default (in MOH 1999 it was one of like 6 control scheme options).

Hopefully these get released on Switch and Playstation, along with Age of Empires. There’s a severe lack of good RTS games on both those platforms.

waytoobad183d ago

if only they didn't raise the price 500% last year.

Let the COD on GamePass experiment begin!
I would think their quarterly revenue will take a hit compared to a year ago, but will maybe make up for it throughout the year as the monthly GP subs keep coming in

pwnmaster3000208d ago

Was up with call of duty man?
I downloaded cod on gamepass and for some reason I cannot access the game.

darthv72208d ago

just curious what version? There are some that you can pre-load, but they wont work until their release date later this month.

pwnmaster3000208d ago

I have to redownload it again for the 3rd time to check.
I ended up just deleting it to make room for other games after the second time.

It was on Xbox game pass, I didn’t know there was other versions. I just downloaded everything, but sadly I couldn’t even access the game. Maybe 3rd time the charm. I’ll download it again.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH208d ago

It’s not out yet man unless you’re talking about MW3.

pwnmaster3000208d ago

I’m talking about mw3. For some reason I could not get it to work.

just_looken208d ago

On xbox there is the last gen/current gen versions pc though you could also get a xbox version.

When that new forza first came out for one day they had the xbox version on the pc store i was like ? what it was odd.

On xbox you can easily download the one version of a game instead of the series version so you run into issues on your series console.

pwnmaster3000207d ago

Because a game won’t run after I download it??
Man your kids must hate your @ss if that’s how you think.

It's going to be very interesting to follow up on how the new entry of CoD will perform at the box office, player numbers and distribution of Xbox, PC and PS versions this year.

DivineHand125208d ago

I got excited thinking they ported StarCraft to consoles but it's just the PC version. Also, I thought Starcraft 2 was already free to play.

TheColbertinator208d ago

I'm certain it is going to be the Campaign Collection version.
