The Evil Within Review | Good Game

The biggest criticism is in The Evil Within's pacing. In between fights, you're slowed so much for transitions and walking around, it kind of feels like the game has a weight just dragging you down the whole time. You are moved from location to location so abruptly that it becomes jarring. The game is at its best when you're down to those last 3 bullets and you've got overwhelming odds against you, but it's difficult to stay invested when Sebastian barely responds to anything that is happening around him. The questionable voice-acting and occasional frame-rate drops certainly don't help.

But if you're a fan of the genre and you're after something that will truly test your survival stamina, then this is worth a look. But it's not a must play.

Not in the slightest. This truly is a Shinji Mikami masterpiece, and in my opinion it tops Resident Evil 4!

Dudebro903899d ago

Go play resident evil 4 again.

Evil within in a mess compared to that game.

Plagasx3899d ago

@SCW1982

The Evil Within is great but I wouldn't go as far as saying it's better than RE4..

Although it does do certain things better. Like the gunplay feels better in Evil Within.

joab7773899d ago

It's actually really good. Coupled with the fact that there isn't that much else out there like this, I am happy.

It has a Bioshock feel to it, as well as resident evil. Just perfecting certain situations with what u have. I can't wait to try it on the hardest difficulty.

*That review though* Yes I know it's the internet but still.

OT: I think this is a fair score this there are a lot of elements taken from RE4

Foraoise3898d ago

This review seems far too harsh. It's a great game. definitely deserves at very LEAST a 7.8/10

jc123899d ago

not gonna lie, i just bought this game yesterday, I'm lovin it! Granted I love survival horror games.

Pikminmaniac3899d ago

I also bought this game yesterday as well. Just finished chapter 3. so far not bad, considering I've never really played any survival horror.

Concertoine3898d ago (Edited 3898d ago )

It starts off great, unfortunately things only get inconsistent. One second im wandering in the tense, pitch black luring disturbing creatures into my traps, the next im on a banal turret section mowing down enemies meant to be intimidating while the framerate dips to 10.

But reviewers are missing the point for sure. Instead of bashing the cheesy voice acting (works for the game imo) and story they should be praising this game as the RE5 we've waited 10 years for.

This game is a 8.5 for me.

jc123898d ago (Edited 3898d ago )

I was pleasantly surprised by the graphics too, at least on the ps4. The art work is top notch, while the atmosphere is varied and appropriately macabre.

The decision to blur - or make fuzzy - the player's vision at range was also effective; it in induces a sense of uncertainty and vulnerability.

Lighting is excellent and establishes a certain eeriness - as does the graininess of the environment.

Perhaps more importantly though - at least for me - is the fact that this game is a relentless assault on your sanity. Really. Mikami puts the player in a constant state of tension. Whether it be making a quick decision under extreme duress, or only having 2 bullets with 4 enemies, you're rarely at ease. You're frequently placed in claustrophobic situations, making for a very unnerving, relentless experience.

And while the game is hard, its not cheap. There are occasional trial and error moments, but if you stay keen to your surroundings, they're brief.

9/10 so far, im on chapter 9.

Remy_S3899d ago

The game has some frame rate issues, but other than that I think its a really good horror game.

hemmo19863899d ago

I dont trust there reviews like I use to. When they say we only played a few hours at the start of a review its never a good sign. When I first played this game it annoyed me; the black bars etc, but by chapter 5 I didn't even notice them. Sounds like they played shadow of mordor and didn't have enough time.

Fro_xoxo3899d ago (Edited 3899d ago )

What is a 5.8? smh

Whatever happened to whole numbers. .

LAWSON723899d ago

It's is like, how did you like that movie I was thinking a 6.6 maybe a 6.7 certainly not a solid 6.5 but around there lol, so I am going to pick a random number in between that sounds like a good number lol. Like seriously people it is not that hard to pick a whole number or if that is too difficult .5

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Venoxn4g13d ago

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

i really didnt like the 2nd game.

first game was fantastic

...they didn't close, they changed owners. As far as i know HFR2 is still in the works.

Lightning77270d ago

Hifi 2 is still in development. The devs themselves said what they wanted to do with the sequel.

jznrpg90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

They closed then got new owners

The Evil Within Anniversary Edition?

Good God. We were robbed.

I would imagine they would have improved the graphics and animations to bring them more in line with the second game. Wishful thinking but it would have been really cool if they redid the voice lines from the first game aswell with the same actors from the second, I felt they had more personality in the sequel. The only person I thought gave it a bit more than the others was Jennifer Carpenter as Kidman but the sequels voice actress did a great job aswell.

Microsoft is going to do f*** all with the IP and we'll never see a second Ruvik and Seb showdown.

I hope Krafton goes back and gets it after Hi-Fi Rush 2 if it was only because they didn't want the initial purchase to get complicated.

Neonridr270d ago

I preferred the first game to the second to be honest.

-Foxtrot270d ago

I wasn't really making a point at what game was overall better, just the voices were so flat in the first one and it would be nice if the animations and the like would be improved upon.

FinalFantasyFanatic269d ago

I really got to get around to playing the first one, I really liked the second game.

Venoxn4g269d ago

It hurts so bad knowing that there might have been new content for Evil Within..love those games

CrimsonWing69269d ago

This is one of those things I’ll never forgive Xbox for.

127maXimus269d ago

What a stupid, short sided move by Microsoft. Comparatively it would have been cheap for them to hang onto their only Japanese studio, with actually good games that people want to play. I struggle to understand how Phil Spencer is still employed. At this point it is Kathleen Kennedy levels of failure.

BlackIceJoe268d ago

Well said about him being Microsoft's version of Kathleen Kennedy.

All he has been doing is to destroy Xbox and it is unbelievable he falls upwards.

This shouldn't have happened.

Who's next..

JEECE379d ago

Ninja Theory, most likely.

tay8701379d ago

Ninja theory. Others will follow as well. The smaller studios MS owns should all be worried. Maybe MS will try and release some of their games day and date on ps5 to save some of these studios.

jznrpg379d ago

I can see Ninja Theory. At least Tango made a game that was reviewed well. Ninja Theory spent a lot of years to release a tech demo that didn’t do well at all.

repsahj379d ago

I get it that Hellblade 2 is a boring game, but I hope they are not the next to be closed.

ABizzel1379d ago

@repssahj

Ninja Theory is likely on the chopping block too. They released Bleeding Edge which bombed, took 4 years to release Hellbalde 2 which doesn’t seem to be doing well, and still have Project Mara in limbo. They’re high on the chopping block.

MS was likely expecting their God of War / Uncharted quality game from NT based on Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, DmC, and to an extent Hellblade 1, but NT hasn’t delivered since Hellblade 1 which was 7 years ago.

Sonic1881379d ago

And Obsidian after Avowed releases

I rarely agree with you but on this I do!

PRIMORDUS379d ago

3 trillion MS is worth, yet they do this, well Phil the shit bag did. No studio needed to be let go, when you are worth this much.

anast379d ago

Sad, but I see characters and posters of either less than average or barely average games.

LoveSpuds379d ago

Have to disagree here duder, with respect. Evil Within was a good game and the sequel was fantastic, as was HiFi Rush. I'd concede Ghostwire was pretty average but regardless, shuttering a studio which just put out MS best game in donkeys years was complete shithousery on XBox' part.

Einhander1972379d ago (Edited 379d ago )

Microsoft paid 8B to buy Zenimax then fired well over 1000 people from Zenimax between the time they closed the deal and they announced these shut downs.

People talk about the 1900 they fired most recently, but that was only one wave of three sets of layoffs from their gaming division so far this generation totalling around 5000 people this generation. Not counting the dozen plus studios they canned last gen including Lionhead the original Fable developers.

anast379d ago

By every real metric HiFi was an average game. I don't see an Evil within poster in the thumb, which is a shame, because if they threw their weight behind that IP, they might have still been around.

LoveSpuds379d ago

I don't understand how you can say it was average in every metric when it garnered the reviews it did?
