Phil Spencer on Whether He Would Have Made Xbox One More Powerful: “I’m Not Ashamed of The Hardware”

Since becoming head of Microsoft’s Xbox division Phil Spencer has changed quite a few things, and many wonder whether he would have made the Xbox One more powerful had he been in charge during the console’s planning phase. Spencer explained his point of view on that question today.

Xbox Ones hardware isn't bad, just not as good as the PS4's in some areas (mainly the GPU and Ram bandwidth). Both consoles have their strengths and weaknesses. Honestly, I would have liked to see better CPUs in both consoles seeing as its both their weakest point.

@Eonjay

Ok, I can understand them for being upset about downgrades (none of us were happy about Watchdogs and all) but why take it out on console gamers instead of the companies that make the games? Seems like a jerk move in my opinion.

darthv723901d ago

well...at some point console specific games will be developed to take advantage of the multi-core cpu's inside each of these systems. you have 8 1.6GHz+ cpu cores and the majority of the games (if not all of them to this point) arent even really using them effectively.

It has been like that on the 360 and PS3. I dont even know of any games that utilized the tri-core design of the 360 or all the SPU's of the PS3. I mean there are some great looking/playing games on both but nothing to really take advantage of those features that were touted from the beginning.

We are in a rush to move on to the next gen while the previous one was starting to hit its stride. its been like that for many generations. some of a platforms best work comes at or near the end of its run so there is still time for the Ps4 and xb1 to really show what their legs are capable of.

We just need to be patient.

AndrewLB3900d ago

Darth- I would have agreed with you 2-3 years ago, but most games made this past year or two can utilize 8 cores just fine.

examples:

WatchDogs- http://static1.gamespot.com...
Last Light Redux- http://www.dsogaming.com/wp...
Diablo 3- http://i.imgur.com/1Zl02Pi....
Crysis 3- http://www.game-debate.com/...
Wolfenstein- http://www.dsogaming.com/wp...

The only times I've seen a modern demanding game not properly utilize 8 CPU threads is when core-parking is enabled.

otherZinc3901d ago

Phil,

You have the only console that has done 1080p 60fps without dropping a frame:
Forza Motorsport 5
Halo Master Chief Collection

Sony is a "Paper Champ" they talk a big game on paper: Now look at Drive Club...no weather, no features, 50 cars that you can only play 15 because the online doesn't work for everyone.

Meanwhile, Forza Horizon 2 is loaded.

Also, you have the only exclusive shooter that has Campaign Co-op! Halo Master Chief Collection. Soon to come, Halo 5 & Gears.

You're in a fine position Phil.

windblowsagain3901d ago

Halo master chief is a remaster.

Forza5 uses a slightly upgraded Forza4 engine.

Same thing with horizon, weather upgrade.

As for Driveclub. Fully rendered realtime dynamic engine @ 1080p. Nothing baked.

quenomamen3901d ago

I'm not sure being outsold 3-1 is what MS calls being in a fine position. You might say it fine but try asking some their stock holders if X1 is in a fine position.

LightofDarkness3901d ago (Edited 3901d ago )

@quenomamen: And I take it you hold stock in either company? Why would you or anyone else on this site be concerned about the feelings of Microsoft's stockholders otherwise? We're gaming fans, stick to the games. Using sales as a yardstick for your console p*ssing contests is groan inducing and absolutely not a measure of the machine's quality or library, nor it is a witty retort of any kind. It is - and should be - irrelevant to the average gamer.

MarkusMcNugen3901d ago

@windblowsagain

And completely linear races. The two games are not comparable. It's like comparing an FPS graphics with GTAs. Two completely different types of game worlds.

Jaqen_Hghar3901d ago

ooooo remastered 6th gen games at 1080p 60fps...oh wait Sony did that on PS3. Please don't act like that's the same as doing a current gen game at 1080p 60fps.

thereapersson3901d ago

Gotta love the consistency in OtherZinc's trolling. Apparently the mods do too because it's been here a while.

xbox doesn't have anything better than ps4 and ps4 GPU is vastly more powerful than xbones

IrishSt0ner3901d ago (Edited 3901d ago )

HDMI in, Dual OS, IR Blaster, Night vision motion control, Intergrated TV, DLNA, Custom themes/backgrounds, voice control of all features and TV/Set-top box, Family-sharing, Smartglass, Monthly Updates etc...

Yea sure it doesn't have anything better, an boy that PS4 CPU is in a league of it's own.

Nekroo913901d ago

Irish, yes because gamers care about integrated TV or nightvision control, custom themes are coming with 2.0 along with share play something that gamers really want and a next gen features.

And btw Ps4 cpu can process more data due to gpgpu than the xbox one

MarkusMcNugen3901d ago (Edited 3901d ago )

@Nekroo91

One bub. Figures.

Yes, gamers do care about what their consoles can do. If gamers didn't care about anything other than gaming, last gen consoles wouldnt have had facebook, youtube, rentable movies and tv shows, netflix... shall I go on?

Why don't we just go back to 1999 when our consoles did nothing but play games... that would really be a step up to what we have now... herp derp.

@Perkel and Nekroo91

Geez you fanboys are really dense in the head. PS4 is getting an update with awesome features. Good. Thats awesome for you guys.

Xbox One has it's own benefits and great updates, but of course you could care less about that because it's not your beloved PS4.

Just GTFO. People like you bring shame to the title of gamer.

IrishSt0ner3901d ago

@Nekroo - I was replying to the comment that XBO doesn't have anything better, your defense is irrelevant.

GPGPU can be done on XBO too, you can't have 50% better graphics processing AND have more CPU due to GPGPU.

PS4 is a better gaming console, everyonoe knows it, I don't get why people are so defensive against XBO's other strengths, IMO they're actually really cool.

marlinfan103901d ago

@nekroo

Oh okay so we shouldnt care about that stuff but were supposed to care about sales. Thanks for clearing that up

@IrishSt0ner

Quote :

Yes it can be done, but not in the way like PS4 can.

Some PS4 games ( Resogun, InFamous ) already use GPGPU compute and it's a future of programming on PS4 and PC. Xbone doesn't have full hUMA architecture like PS4, small number of ROP's CU's and ACE's compared to PS4 GPU and absence of ASYNCHRONOUS FINE GRAIN COMPUTE POSSIBILITIES

WilDRangeRfc3901d ago

1.8 TF vs 1.3 TF ok that's vast is it??? Be more worried about how FH2 shits on DC or how shit PS4 flag ship shooter Destiny is compared to Halo(multiplat yes but it's supposed to be PS4,s Halo killer!! How many times have I heard that) I have just sold PS4 3 games 2 controllers for £300 it's a great machine but UI is boring, voice chat quality is terrible when you actually hear people talk(boring community)and games are severely lacking in the AAA department,I would never sell my X1 a few pixels less for better online, controller, community and games

darthv723901d ago

Perhaps you could define "vastly" in your words because the real definition does not reflect your use of it.

the ram in the x1 is perfect for what it's designed to do. it's just not the best for feeding the gpu like gddr5 and gddr5 is not good for feeding the cpu or good at multitasking. so ddr3 was a wise choice for a multitasking entertainment device that just so happens to do video games very well.

agame9143901d ago

Why are xbox owners in such denial that there console is inferior? Sure it has some good games but face thr facts it's INFERIOR. Once you come to grips with that you csn move on.

Back-to-Back3901d ago

A better cpu? lol is this 1995. If anything these consoles would have benefited more from another gpu. Could have made 1080p and/or 60fps the standard.

larrysdirtydrawss3901d ago

you mean a different gpu? cause developing for 2 gpus would be a piece of cake?? thats the worse idea ever... these consoles can do 1080p and 60 with every game(even the xone), graphics would take a big kick in the dick,,,how many times does this have to be said for some of you fking pea-brains out there?

NextGen24Gamer3901d ago

@Future_2015

Strange you say that Phil should be ashamed of the low end piece of crap machine as you so eloquently put it.

I have 2 xbox ones & a Ps4 playing on my LG 4k 60 inch tv and both look great. I have tried some of the multiplatform games for both & the difference is indistinguishable.

For anyone to say the ps4 is 50% more powerful...it just doesn't translate in the games bro.

I prefer the xbox one for many reasons. Better more stable online services, better features..LONG LIST. The Ps4 basically a bare bones gaming machine. I bought it because of the "HYPE". Everyone saying the graphics are better, etc...And for exclusives...which has been a joke up to this point. Drive club is horrible...plays bad, and for a corridor racer, it just wasn't fun. Forza & Forza Horizon 2 look & play better to me. It's not even close.

Where is the 50% difference? Is it a lie? Is there more to it than paper specs? I don't know. But I will tell you this...

1. Multiplatform games look identical...though I enjoy the games on xbox live & it seems to have more steady frame rates...though not enough to brag about.

2. Xbox's exclusives are fantastic...I believe their focus on games is exactly what the doctor ordered.

3. Best looking games in my opinion are on the xbox up to this point. Nothing I have on Ps4 looks as good as Ryse. And Xbox is the only platform that has games running in 1080p 60fps. And Forza looks & plays insane.

4. You have to commend Xbox for a variety of exclusives. That's ultimately what gaming is about. Playing games. Not pixel counting. Now with that said, I'm a self admitted graphics whore...but between xbox & ps4 multiplatforms....my eyes tell me there is very very very little to no difference. Not enough to run home & tell momma about. Honestly speaking. I don't care what the numbers say on paper.

Lastly...Being since I am a graphics whore, I do have to admit that when you jump from console to PC...the difference is a lil more noticeable...but nothing off the charts. But yes, noticeable. Unlike the comparison between xbox & Ps4.

The system can run "next gen" games and engines

AngelicIceDiamond3901d ago

Of course Phil's gonna have to make due with what he's got. And from the looks of Halo MCC (Remaster graphics) Fable Legends (beautiful Utilization of the latest Unreal Engine) Halo 5 and Remedy's Quantum Break X1 will be just fine.

Plus the Gears Of War graphics? Forget it...

BiggerBoss3901d ago

I somewhat agree with you, but we have literally no idea what Halo 5s graphics look like, let alone Gears. We havent even seen a cinematic teaser of gears so how can that really be used in an argument?

vallencer3901d ago

I'd venture a guess and say he's using gears as an example because when it first came out on the 360 it was the best looking game available. That and it's also 1st party exclusive and history has shown that they always look better then third party.

ThatOneGuyThere3901d ago

gears of war was NOT the best looking console game when it came out. I'm sorry.

JCOLE131953901d ago

There were some early screenshots of the Halo 5 maps that will be in the beta. Obviously a work in progress though. I'm sure it will look better next year at launch.

Eonjay3901d ago

Its all relative I guess. As in relative to what its compared too. Its definitely a step up from the Xbox 360.

MarkusMcNugen3901d ago

Yes, it's all relative. My PC puts the PS4 and Xbox One to shame. That doesn't mean the PS4 and Xbox One do not hold their own in the gaming department. They both have great games that I would love to play.

Jaqen_Hghar3901d ago

and that's all that matters for a console. Hate it when people compare it to PC they should be compared to their predecessors and to their peers.

You got downvotes by pathetic gamers for feeling hopeful about good games coming out next year. Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy? It is pretty neat to see people's world view blow up in front of them as they realize Microsoft has put themselves in a driver's seat that Sony hasn't been able to touch all generation.... What's even more pathetic is the same people downvoting you are the same people wishlisting Microsoft games on their ps5s 😂

P_Bomb16d ago

“Imagine how small your brain must be to downvote someone excited for future gaming joy?”

My dude your post history shits on EVERYTHING. You never have a good thing to say about anything lol! 🤣

You literally said this a couple of days ago. Start applying the clown make up, you hypocritical jester

derek16d ago

Yep we'll see, they have alot releasing next year.

RaidenBlack15d ago

NGL, next year might be one of the best years in gaming ... starting off with RE9 and GTA VI ...
and then all the good games that's been cooking
Pragmata, Sands of Time, Saros, Gears E-Day, 007 First Light, Blood of Dawnwalker,
Mortal Shell II, Onimusha, Marvel1943: Rise of Hydra
current-gen only Infinity Ward's CoD, Duskbloods
+ My guess: Wolverine, Exodus, Mudang, Crimson Desert, Clockwork etc ...
~ seems like it might get too stacked

1Victor15d ago

@rokos:”Hopefully “
I downvoted you not for been hopeful but because I have seen the same “NEXT YEAR WILL BE SPECIAL “ comment for the last 10+ and hasn’t seen anything special from Microsoft.
I hope next year will be the one that everyone been waiting for since the last 3 years of the Xbox 360, it have to be after over $80 billions spent on acquisitions.

Lightning7715d ago

So the new excuse is they don't count because it's from the ABK now huh. I guess all those 3rd party games count even less because they don't own them. According to your always crappy logic.

InUrFoxHole15d ago

Lol. You haven't seen anything special? Do you even game?

OtterX16d ago

Always with the "next year..."! 😂

neutralgamer199216d ago

I don't know they have delivered this year and even last year. And they have a lot more content in the pipeline right now than anyone else. We can't just keep hating on MS

Indiana Jones
South of midnight
Avowed
Flight simulator
Hell Blade 2
Minecraft update
Gears of war reloaded
Indian Jones:expansion
Gears E day
Clockwork revolution
Fable
Doom the dark ages
The outer worlds 2
Grounded 2
Call of duty

OtterX16d ago

How many of those titles were just buyouts of companies that were going about making their games anyways? *Throws cash - "Oh look what we made!"

dveio16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

This list, that's been posted again, and again, and again in every single topic like this, contains almost nothing, literally almost nothing from Microsoft's own creational thoughtprocess.

It's a bunch of former 3rd party IPs.

Now even slowly returning to Playstation in some cases like Indiana, Hellblade, probably Starfield soon too, after they were made exclusively to Xbox on purpose.

Due to Microsoft's lack for own IP material except Halo & Forza. Which, the lack of, was the sole reason for all of it to happen in the first place anyway. Please don't pretend it wasn't.

And just look at all the games that come from Obsidian alone.

You really think Obsidian wasn't already working on Avowed and South of Midnight even without Microsoft buying Zenimax?

Microsoft delivered nothing but cheques.

OtterX16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

@dveio THIS. Lol, this dude thinks Call of Duty wouldn't exist without Microsoft! smh 😂

neutralgamer199216d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Common narrative I see often — that Microsoft shouldn’t get credit for the games its studios release because they “just bought them.” But this viewpoint ignores key context and sets a double standard that other platform holders aren’t held to

No one is saying these games wouldn't exist at all without Microsoft. But let’s not pretend that having a trillion-dollar company backing a studio doesn’t make a massive difference. Obsidian never had AAA funding before the Xbox acquisition. Pillars of Eternity was crowdfunded, and their resources were always stretched thin. Now they’re working on Avowed, with proper support behind it.

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was made by around 20 people, using borrowed equipment and doing mocap in a boardroom. It was a passion project held together by tape and willpower. Today, Hellblade II exists because they were given resources, time, and freedom — something many developers don’t get unless they’re owned by a company that believes in their vision.

ZeniMax (Bethesda’s parent company) was in real financial trouble before the Microsoft acquisition. Reports and insider accounts have pointed out how much they needed a cash infusion. And while some people want to write off Xbox’s ownership of Bethesda titles, they forget the alternative could have meant layoffs or even closures.

The same goes for Activision Blizzard. Would you really prefer the company to stay under Bobby Kotick, after all the documented workplace misconduct and toxic leadership issues? Say what you want about Microsoft, but their acquisition brought accountability and change to a company that desperately needed it.

At the same time, Xbox gets hated on for doing what every major company does. Sony bought Housemarque, Bluepoint, Insomniac — but no one says Spider-Man 2 “doesn’t count” because of that. Why does Xbox get treated differently for acquiring struggling or undervalued developers and giving them a chance to thrive?

And the idea that Xbox locks games away is outdated. They're pushing cross-platform releases, cloud gaming, Game Pass, and backward compatibility more than any other platform holder. They're not forcing all studios into live service. If anything, their upcoming lineup is less GAAS-heavy and more focused on narrative and creativity — Avowed, South of Midnight, Clockwork Revolution, Fable, Perfect Dark, Towerborne, and others show real variety.

Whether people like it or not, Xbox is now the biggest publisher in the industry and owns the most gaming IPs. But what matters more is how they treat their studios. Most of these teams were previously stuck making AA games with limited scope — now they’re getting the tools and support to aim higher.

So when people say “Microsoft didn’t make those games,” they’re missing the point. It’s not about who started the studio — it’s about who enabled them to do their best work. You don’t have to love Xbox to admit they’ve helped a lot of developers and are taking a player-first approach.

Instead of writing off everything they do, maybe try recognizing the good they’re doing for both devs and gamers. At the end of the day, we should want more studios to succeed — no matter who owns them

BeHunted16d ago

I'm surprised Clockwork Revolution (BioShock meets Dishonored) isn't getting more media attention. The game looks interesting and reminds me of the old RPG games.

anast16d ago

The only good game on that list is Flight sim. The rest are either average or will be average. It's not a good look for MS.

TheEroica16d ago

My god.... Look how many comments are upset about microsoft's successes... 😂 This may be my new favorite thread. Not one gamer saying thanks for all the goodness coming their way, just bitter anger and downvoting the very games they themselves will purchase throughout 2026.... Sony really worked you guys over this generation.... Condolences.

DivineHand12516d ago

@neutralgamer1992 You said what needed to be said.

I have heard for years from older gamers that fanboys are the biggest issue with any fanbase. They will defend or gloss over negative news as long as the correct logo is on the box and they bash the competing platform no matter how much good they are trying to bring.

Right now their advocacy for PlayStation is elevating that platform so high that Sony no longer believes they need to do anything to satisfy their loyal fanbase like they did in the PS4 days.

I just hope most of them will eventually start advocating for themselves and encourage others to do the same. No one should blindly support one platform because these companies do not care about anything other than profit.

neutralgamer199216d ago

Hunted

And first proper game done by the studio with proper AAA budget and saying it will be released when ready

Anast

I believe we went through this before that you are objectively wrong. Meta critic, user reviews, game sales. In Playstation top 10 best selling games were 5 from Microsoft studios

Otter

No this dude is saying so many other studios wouldn't be thriving without MS money and people would be getting abused physically and mentally with Bobby kotick and his side kicks

Also maybe look up how the original founder of Bethesda and zenimax was kicked out of his own company by his best friend lawyer. So that was always a shady place and had been struggling financially before MS paid a premium of almost 7 billion

Eroica

I use to be a die hard Playstation fan and now I only have a Pc. I see how these fans are so toxic. They just can't handle any positive news regarding Xbox. When the best selling games on playstation are Xbox titles. Look at Forza horizon being best seller and that's years old game by MS. I guess ms don't deserve credit for that success too since they are the only company in gaming making acquisitions

Forget the fact Sony paid 3.6 billion for bungie and MS 6.9 for zenimax. Which investment has turned out better

Destiny and marathon with a lot of controversy

While zenimax output is nothing short of amazing compared to what bungie has released

crazyCoconuts16d ago

Yeah it's tricky. "Xbox" has morphed to mean different things to different people.
Console, now Windows, GamePass, and the cross platform games. There's a mix of attitudes towards all those things individually, and maybe an overarching attitude towards MS. But can't argue that the game companies MS recently bought continue to flourish, and GamePass PC has been a great value over the last year.

Phil Spencer 'Very Excited' About Xbox Handheld Plans For 2025

With ASUS seemingly teasing an Xbox handheld last week, there's been a lot of talk about the device in the days ever since, and Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also teased something to do with handhelds happening in 2025

purexbox.com
neutralgamer199282d ago

I really hope this isn't a windows based device even though coming from MS that's highly unlikely. SteamDeck is much much easier to use and offers a much better user experience than any other handheld device because it's all based on steam app. The Xbox handheld should be based on that because a Windows device with a 7-8 inch screen makes it's difficult to navigate

darthv7282d ago

Coming from Asus... its going to be an Xbox branded ROG Ally.

neutralgamer199282d ago

That's fine but hopefully it will be a Xbox app based instead of windows

VenomUK81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

When the casual market learn that there’s going to be an Xbox branded Asus handheld they will cancel their Nintendo Switch 2 preorders and get the Asus. No it won’t have exclusive games like Super Mario or Zelda or Metroid or Pilot Wings or Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or Donkey Kong or Pokémon or Super Smash Bros - but who cares as it will have access to the entire library of the Steam Store running on Windows. It will also have access to Game Pass with all the modern day classics like Avowed, Hellblade II and Grounded and Pentiment.

I think we all have to acknowledge that after all the criticism of Switch 2 on ResetEra it’s evidence that it will fail to sell and the Asus will outsell it. Dreamcast pushed Sega out of hardware, we all have to accept that the perfect storm of Switch 2 pricing, an Xbox-branded Asus and Phil Spencer and Aaron Greenberg’s persuasive promotion will likely kill off Switch 2 within a month. AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

FinalFantasyFanatic81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

@VenomUK,
I don't think that even has a remote chance of happening, Nintendo has so much brand loyalty, even with the backlash on their not so great pricing, I still think it's going to sell, Xbox doesn't have as much brand loyalty. Plus, if it's just Xbox branded ROG Ally or something similar, why not just choose a ROG ally or Steam Deck? They can both do everything that an Xbox branded handheld can. If Xbox is going to compete in the world of windows based handhelds, it has so much competition, it's going to struggle.

You're way too optimistic about the Xbox handheld and the demise of the Switch 2, I'm going to predict the opposite and say the Switch 2 will demolish the Xbox handheld in terms of sales/popularity.

S2Killinit81d ago

@VenomUK
Not sure if sarcasm or satire.

VenomUK81d ago

@S2Killinit Satire. I’m not going to hate on people for being excited for a new console. But what is happening in the Xbox community is something wicked, content creators are hyping up the Asus to their audience about how great this thing is, and how it will be more powerful than the Switch 2 and the Steam Store outweighs any advantage the Switch 2 has with its library of games. I don’t believe they believe it but they are grifting. By all means look forward to it but don’t sell it as a Switch 2 PS5 killer.

Steam Os is amazing. By far the best. Can’t imagine MS having an OS that can top it (CERTAINLY not windows)

crazyCoconuts82d ago

Well they're gonna try. They've already stated they've been working on it.

FinalFantasyFanatic81d ago

Windows as is, isn't a great experience for a handheld, they really need to make a dedicated handheld OS, unfortunately they've always been hellbent on making a single product for both PC/touch screen use.

I really can't imagine them making something that stands up to Steam OS, it just works so well.

RaidenBlack81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

This is not their in-house made Xbox handheld for next-gen, which is slated for release in 2027 alongside with the next Xbox console, which might run a version of their usual Xbox-ified OS optimized for the handheld.
This is just a brand collab to produce an Xbox branded updated Asus RoG Ally (Project Kennan), which as usual ships with Windows. Think of it as the 5th main competitor in handheld PC market, after Deck, Legion Go, Ally and MSi Claw (I know others exist, but these are the popular ones).
https://wccftech.com/xbox-h...
And RoG Ally didn't get an update this year like the Legion Go, so this Xbox-Asus one might be that?
Anyways, even with 2025 chip upgrade, the Legion Go underperforms compared to 2023 Ally and 2024 Ally X.

crazyCoconuts82d ago

It can't be anything but Windows if it has the Xbox brand on it. Outside of the politics (which would be a showstopper), SteamOS/Linux can't run GamePass natively due to the crazy protections implemented by the Windows Store.

neutralgamer199282d ago

I am not asking the Xbox handheld to run steam, I just wanted a dedicated Xbox app on the handheld that handles everything from playing games, downloading games, gamepass and most importantly all updates are done from that app. Just a better overall user experience

Having to download multiple different things on a Windows based device becomes really a chore in a smaller screen.

crazyCoconuts82d ago

Having the windows handheld auto launch the existing Xbox Windows app will accomplish everything you mentioned, and I'm sure that's what this will be.
Fact is that MS will need to add a lot into that app to incorporate all the system level controls Steam incorporated into their handheld UI.

OmegaSoldati81d ago

Steam Deck for the win! Switch too.

Profchaos81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

It'll be windows all leaks indicate this is a windows based device with a Xbox skin it will integrate other storefronts because at its core it's windows.

@venom there's is no chance that parents will be buying their kids a rog ally setting up steam and other storefronts over a Nintendo switch 2 at Christmas.

That's a mass amount of hopium there.

Portable PC's in total have barely cracked six million sold the switch 2 will continue to dominate the casual crowd all known about it and news of a switch successor has already started spreading in mainstream media

I think switch 2 will do well but dominate I think we need to wait and see. The prices of the console and games is much more than switch so don't expect parents in this inflation time to spend $600 on 2 games and a console. Since it's Nintendo it should sell but I think we are underpaying the importance of the inflated market

Every inch of this things is going to be a subservice.

Aloymetal82d ago

And an even bigger flop in the making, it's like they're just throwing crap at the wall and see what sticks or rather find another ''clever'' way to keep squeezing more money from the already miniscule and gullible fanbase. Smfh.

Reaper22_81d ago

Squeezing money. Isn't that what sony is doing with tbe ps5pro. And what about all those remakes and locking some ps4 games to a subscription.

ABizzel181d ago

At first I thought this was a huge mistake on MS part. But after thinking about this more and more, while I still don’t think it’s going to do anything beyond 10 - 20 million in sales, I think that’s exactly what MS and ASUS are expecting and both are okay with.

I assume this is more of Asus saying to MS, look we have ten/twenty million of these handheld PCs already in production and we’ve only been able to sell a couple millions, partner with us and let’s brand them as Xbox handhelds ASUS will do all the heavy lifting so we don’t take a loss on all these, and all MS has to do is market the platform and put your logo, the new Xbox OS/app you’ve been working on, and together we’ll helps each other out and push more GamePass subscriptions.

That make complete logical sense as to why this came about, because otherwise….. So technically it would be a win:win for both companies, or a win for MS and a reduction of loss of ASUS, even if they only sell 10m - 20m units.

As for the handheld itself honestly, it should be solid and most likely based on the Rog Ally 7, but hopefully with the Rog Ally X case as that has a much better port and I/O layout. Plus if the Xbox OS is wayyyyyyy lighter than Windows then it should be a a good piece of tech getting more performance than the Ally 7 Windows version for around $499.

But that’s where the next problem comes into play…..Price. It’s Switch 2 all over again. The slight different is outside of the potential of DLSS, this should be a slightly more powerful handheld, especially if they create their own dock, but that dock will likely be sold separately meaning now we’re looking at $550 or more, for what will essentially be a docked Xbox Series S and a slightly more powerful SteamDeck / Switch 2 in handheld mode.

peppeaccardo81d ago

The Irrelevant-Held will be able to connect to the XFLOP Series X

anast81d ago

ha! It might last longer than the Stadia.

Profchaos81d ago

Basically what windows os turning into now every few weeks logging on I'm greeted with a hey how about some office 365 or your gamepass lapsed how about renewing and decline is in little blue writing while subscribe is a huge button

anast81d ago

This and I also get a pop up to subscribe to Xbox GamePass.

PanicMechanic82d ago

So smart of you caveman Phil sphincter. Did you get the memo on what Nintendo is releasing this year?

Kyizen82d ago

I dont trust Microsoft to build an OS for this looking at the Windows phone so I think this will be just Windows with a Steam like Big Picture mode locked in the UI to launch games.

Rockstar81d ago

This is good advice from Reaper here. I trust your advice and you've got my word...I wont buy it.

Thanks Reaper!

YourMommySpoils81d ago

Then don't complain about facts.

PanicMechanic81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

So in other words, it’s just another ROG Ally. I think MS has a winner🤣🤣

FinalFantasyFanatic81d ago

I remember when my sister bought a Windows phone, that thing was missing so many basic features, she didn't even own the phone for 3 months before getting frustrated and swapping it out.

Profchaos81d ago

I'll be honest I had a older relative that loved the windows phone cause it had a huge dial, contacts and camera button that was all it got used for.

Oh and it was bright green so easy to find

Moral of the story one person's trash is another's treasure

Reaper22_81d ago

Windows phones weren't the best but I also remember sonys phones didn't fare too well either. As a matter of fact they're newest ones aren't doing so great either. Not even in Japan. That says alot.

Profchaos81d ago

@reaper22 honestly Shane about the Sony phones to I brought the Xperia 3 when they announced remote play for it and it was one of the best ones I have had the battery lasted a few days the camera was some obscene 50mp but the physical design lagged behind Samsung and I think that was a huge reason it failed

Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Reassures Xbox Gamers Their Gaming Library Isn't Going Anywhere

Xbox's CEO Phil Spencer assures that, even though they are expanding to other platforms, Xbox gamer's libraries aren't going anywhere.

jznrpg131d ago

Phil, the words of a guy who only speaks the truth.

If I was an Xbox owner I wouldn’t feel comfortable with what he just said

crazyCoconuts130d ago

Reading his quote sounds like word salad. I'm not sure he said anything really.

darthv72130d ago

I'd rather him say more of our library will be made available now. It sucks to have so many 360 era games still stuck in limbo, especially Activision ones now that they are buddy buddy.

VenomUK130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Sarah Bond had committed to backwards compatibility, so interpreting Phil Spencer’s quote, old Xbox games will always be playable with a PS3 on PSN like cloud solution, and on new hardware if a new Xbox console is ever released.

why does this even need to be reassured? it really goes to show you how nervous there fanbase is.

Eonjay131d ago

Right. I was thinking the same thing. This shouldn't be some sort of 'benefit' for Xbox gamers as MS goes to Sony and Nintendo... This should just be implied. No matter where the games go in the future should have any impact on the purchased games libraries of current Xbox consumers.

pwnmaster3000131d ago

Yup no matter how much they say they don’t care, the fanbase care lol

Profchaos130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

What's left of them one the last 12 months I've seen Xbox consoles flooding second hand marketplaces and going for half of their RRP

In addition this interview the whole panel was clearly not believing the viewpoint but not wanting to offend their guest

LabRat130d ago

When (or "if") Xbox goes out of hardware those who don't play on Cloud or prefer hardware...where will they play their library?

PhillyDonJawn129d ago

Not the question. If you already gave the hardware and games. Why would it disappear?

Chocoburger130d ago

Ah yes, Phillip, the pinnacle of honesty, and he never changes his mind. We can all take his word for it without hesitation. 🤥

Profchaos130d ago

He did but in the follow up sentence he talked about charging pricing because they are a business so who knows maybe the next gen box has a fee to use their emulator service I imagine wine ports to a PC architecture
