EGM's Killzone 2 Feature Reveals Cell Usage & More

Last week, EGM/1UP.com revealed that the August issue of EGM has feature story on Killzone 2. Subscribers should have their copies as early as today and the magazine hits news stands later this week.

The magazine features 12 pages of Killzone 2 goodness, some of which mentions that four-and-a-half of the six cores of the PS3's Cell chip are being used by Killzone 2 at the moment.

But I think its awesome that the playstation family are sharing technology the way they are with each other.. R2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3 ftw! I wish Treyarch and Infinity Ward were part of that family. Imagine all of the great things that could come out of that.

BigBaehr6204d ago

Anything about Killzone 2 is HUGE news :D
KILLZONE 2 FTW!!!!!!!

meepmoopmeep6204d ago

i really respect how all of Sony's 1st party studios help each other out like this. that's awesome for everybody.

Yoma6204d ago

Wow. Can you just imagine the game which will be using all of the cores???

Lifendz6204d ago (Edited 6204d ago )

for KZ2 is rearing its head again. The game actually survived the shame of a CGI trailer and having a somewhat lackluster first installment. The game isn't even going to be judged on it's own merit. It's going to be measured against the Halo's, COD's, and Gears of the War. I guess why not. KZ has talked such a good one and has provided such amazing imagery that the comparision is only natural. The PS3 is almost tied to Killzone. The console is now at a point where I think it'd be just fine if KZ2 was a flop (although the fanboyism on this site would cause a shutdown if the game flops), but I'm sure Sony is going to ensure a solid sales showing by advertizing this game big time. They have too. This isn't MGS4 selling a mill plus on day one with no advertising.

They have my 60.00 bucks but if it's a flop game (gameplay is broken, major visual issues, etc) I doubt I'd ever give Guerilla a chance again.

Clinton5146204d ago

Funny you should mention merit. That's pretty much what the closing paragraph of the preview mentions. Though, reading a few other previews, how honestly should we expect this game to be reviewed?

I'm not a crazy conspiracy theorist but the amount of previews still hanging onto the Halo Killer stigma, and the lack of mentioning the achievements made with Killzone: Liberation paints a troubling picture regardless of how good the game COULD be.

Lifendz6204d ago

and that whole "Halo Killah!!!" was made by one crazy site and we all ran with it. I was one of those that did. I sat down and play KZ at my friends house to witness the "Halo Killah" and laughed like crazy. Then when my friend suggested I put that out of my mind and just see what they tried to do on a console that was not made to do FPS I had to give the game some credit. An E for effort if you will.

Now KZ2 is coming and the Halo Killer talk is now COD4 killer and PS3 justifyer.

I won't lie, I bought my PS3 over 360 based in part on RROD but mainly because I saw that infamous KZ2 trailer and looked at the 360 launch games (not fair I know but whatever) and the decision was easy.

I'm happy with my PS3 and I'm sure you other PS3 owners are too. I just hope that Guerilla doesn't fall flat on it's face and that it:

A) makes a game that's good and won't get killed for what one crazy mag said years ago and;

B) sells well enough for the company to use the engine again and again. Heck, let's license that sucker out for others to use.

spectyre6204d ago (Edited 6204d ago )

KZ2 will not be compared to other shooters. If you've read the previews you can tell that a higher standard is expected from everyone. If this game has broken gameplay or outstanding visual flaws Guerilla Games reputation will be forever tarnished and Sony will have a huge black eye as well. The most insignificant flaws will weigh heavily against it. It may not be "fair" but that's the way it is... Guerilla knows it, and Sony knows it.

They'll have my $60 also, and part of my anticipation is based on how Sony will respond to the pressure being applied by the gaming community.

hazeblaze6204d ago

This isn't really big news, but it is cool to know the results they have achieved without utilizing all 7 spu's.

On a sidenote, does anyone have a link to scans of this article?

lsujester6204d ago

I agree. It's so cool that they are all sharing information instead of trying to 1up each other and fight to keep a job like other studios under other publishers have to (I'm looking at you, Activision and EA).

If any of you remember, Insomniac gave a big presentation on how to utilize the Cell better. Outlines and powerpoints on process allocations and timing. That was so cool, just opening up others to stuff they had worked out.

meepmoopmeep6204d ago (Edited 6204d ago )

you won't find more brutal nitpicking of a review than you will with Killzone 2. Sony and GG have a 1000 pound guerrilla (pardon pun) on their shoulders with this one and any insignificant flaw will be broadcast world wide. It's not fair but that's the position Killzone 2 is in and forever will be.

but this time they have a bigger team, help from other 1st party studios and a huge budget from Sony, so i hope they can pull this one off.

Bonsai12146204d ago

how do you use half a core? haha. i look forward to reading this in the mag.

For each member of the Legion. Tank battles(images of ISA and Helghast tanks). And a few mentions of returning characters.

Sevir046204d ago

my goodness. i wonder how many cores R2 is using right now. 4 1/2 of of the 6 available cores that incredible. by february this game will look unbelievable. ^^ and this will be a mature first gen game for Guerrilla because it's the first game from their first gen engine. incredible that first gen games look so outstanding. Man i cant wait to see what ratchet Future 2 will look like. man i'm simply jumping in my boots right now

get em' Sony, go for it.

Sev6204d ago

There you are. I havent seen you around "other" Sev.

Sevir046204d ago

just been busy. So what's your thoughts on this maintenance happing tomorrow. Surely your inside has some tips he can share, what do you think this is all about. i mean my hopes aren't up. because if it comes it comes (2.4) i just normally update when i'm ready. I just think it's strange that they are taking down the PSN and the store at the same time. the last time something like this happened. they droped us with 2.3 for the new store revamp. ^^ it'll be interesting but please share your veiws

Killzownz846204d ago

This game will RULE!! Back when Killzone 1 was made guerilla was basically a "basement" studio with very little money and very little time and limited by PS2 hardware for the Vision that had for Killzone.. Now its a totally different story. Sony owns guerilla now so they have all the money and time in the world to perfect this game! After watching all the gameplay videos I am sold that this game will raise the standard on gaming across all platforms.

Im so sick and tired of people saying this game lacks "Innovation" I buy a FPS for awesome graphics, Great multiplayer and great shooting action, not for "innovation" if I want innovation ill buy Little Big Planet (which will also be amazing by the way) but Killzone 2 just looks so awesome.. I cant wait!!

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro238d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken238d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown238d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72238d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken238d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya238d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast238d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood238d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro467d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72467d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_467d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga467d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos467d ago (Edited 467d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23467d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000467d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin467d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole467d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix467d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989467d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor467d ago (Edited 467d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

467d ago
Michiel1989467d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor771d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar771d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg771d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149771d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138771d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim771d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC771d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138771d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle771d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76771d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM771d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730771d ago (Edited 771d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger771d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca771d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy771d ago (Edited 771d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain771d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright771d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
