Got to give the team at Epic credit for bringing these amazing tools to the public

And I have yet to see something that blows me away.

AndrewLB3896d ago

And that's because these "next-gen" consoles don't have the power to blow you away.

People don't understand what kind of power it takes to run real-time ray tracing, and i'm not talking about that half-a$$ed pre-baked kind used in Ryse.

Because if you watched Nvidia's GTC keynote a couple of months ago they demonstrated real-time raytracing on 19 Iray VCAs. Each VCA has 8 GK110 GPUs (2880 cores), probably at around 900MHz. A bit over 23k GPU cores per VCA puts it at about 41.5Tflops per VCA, that's almost 800Tflops and look at the framerate:

Not exactly smooth FPS is it? Single digit FPS, super fun. Oh, and I underestimated the power. In the video he says it's 1 petaflop. 1000 Tflops.

I'm 40 and back in the old days graphics were one of the main reasons I bought a game. For me, going from Atari 2600 to the NES was awesome. Then NES to Genesis and SNES was even better. Then Playstation came out and while the graphics weren't great, being in 3D worlds was a new and cool experience. Then PS2 and Xbox not only wowed with graphics but new ways to play were introduced. Then PS3 and Xbox 360 came along and while the graphics were better, I found that fresh, new "ways" to play a game were kinda lacking. Too many sequels. So now with this new gen I've moved away from looking for graphics first in a game. I want games that play well and introduce new styles. Better AI. Co-op games where you think together (Portal) and not just shoot together. Some of these companies need stop wasting millions on making their games look pretty and concentrate on making them fun.

Games take a while to develop and I'm sure a lot of the games coming out now got started before UE4 really made its debut. We are going to start seeing them a lot more next year I'm sure

I can't wait until Pc games start using Ray Traced Engines.

The power is getting closer and devs currently working on the tech are finding ways to optimize the engines to run on less power.

Good times and a huge graphical leap is a coming

Hello_World3896d ago

Hopefully we start seeing some decent games using UE4 soon

Fans??? This is done by one person

WoodsRatesGames1502d ago

Someone else was commissioned to do the music and another person modelled the batmobile. Links to all involved are included in the article.

Gaming4Life19811502d ago

They should have been made a batman game for the best batman movie. This looks amazing and now I must watch the movie.

Am I crazy or is there an Unreal Engine 5 now? Why promote old tech?

waverider1522d ago

I really dont understand either? isnt the Unreal Engine 5 already available for studios? arent they already working with it?

masterfox1522d ago

UE5 Is for PS5 only, deal with it! :D

***runs away from this thread with pride!**

Tacoboto1522d ago

UE5 is not released yet and developers for years will still make UE4 games because that's where their tools and customizations are.

Mortal Kombat still uses UE3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is also still UE3.

Magog1522d ago

That more of an embarrassing indictment of those devs than a reason to promote old software.

Tacoboto1522d ago

Embarrassing indictment? You know nothing of software development then.

Spenok1522d ago (Edited 1522d ago )

Because a ridiculous amount of the industry still uses 4, and because no, 5 is not out yet. They said it would launch later this year.

AuraAbjure1522d ago

Companies still use Unreal Engine 3.

Really impressive tech but I don’t even notice all of these benefits in real life, never mind being chased by zombies in a video game. Rather devote resources to resolution and frame rate.

Magog1522d ago

If you suddenly stopped casting reflections in a mirror I think you would notice.

Edit: i misread this.

Yes after seeing the Unreal 5 ps5 reveal, I thought that's where we were heading. But saying that I have read various articles that suggest its easy for developers to still work on Unreal 4 and carry everything over to Unreal 5 when needed, we shall see.
