Once you get in, it's more or less impossible to get modders out.

Nintendo cannot write magic. No matter how much they try, they can only write ones and zeros and there is always a way to hack those ones and zeros.

The more they hack the fixs, the more 'security specific' updates we will get. Wastes everyones time and wastes what could have been an update with something useful in it.

especially those who DON'T download the homebrew. Lots of pointless PSP updates for me!

Half of the functionality of the PSP is there primarily because hackers put it there first. When the hacking community does something new, Sony (or whatever first party company) must reciprocate in order to keep up.

For example, hackers found a way to use Wipeout Pure as a web browser. Later, Sony added their own web browser.

Hackers found a way to have the PSP emulate the PS1. Later, Sony re-engineered old PS1 games for use on the PSP.

Hackers found a way to unlock the cpu speed. Later, Sony added the option to unlock the cpu speed.

In all of these cases, Sony was forced to add the functionality in order to keep up with the hacking community. So while they may put out all the "security fixes" they want, they are being forced by these hackers to add new and exciting features (or at least formalize existing ones) to entice users to their proprietary operating system. Even if you don't download homebrew, you're still a beneficiary of the hacking scene.

The PS1 games are emulated using Sony's official emulator on the PSP. Sony brought PS1 emulation to the PSP first. Hackers just unlocked use of all non-PSN PS1 games.
