Using the Wii U GamePad as a Ghost-Killing Camera in Fatal Frame 5

Kotaku: As a long-time fan of the Fatal Frame series, I can see the perceived appeal of having the Wii U's GamePad with its gyro sensor and dedicated screen acting as a proxy for the game's ghost-killing camera. But while it works in Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko (Fatal Frame V), I'd rather just use my big screen TV.

However, that's not to say that the experience has been completely negative. Some interesting changes have come to pass thanks to the GamePad that serve to change up the combat gameplay for the better.

Check out the video here to see just what playing Fatal Frame V with the GamePad is like.

Another forced gimmick in Nintendo games, when just using a standard controller and regular TV screen would have been better. Why does Nintendo feel the need to force these silly gimmicks on gamers? They really need to fire all top-level staff (starting with Iwata) and go back to the drawing board for all their gaming hardware.

Nintendo USED to be the best, the NES and SNES were both fantastic consoles (I still own both, with hundreds of games for them), but for the last decade or more, they've been dragged down by cheap gimmicks tied to crappy hardware. What a shame.

Try to learn the word Gimmick before throwing it around. I heard this idea from fans when the Wii U was announced and they were excited for it. Sorry that you can accept anything different in your life but it certainly is not forced. Forced is making Quantum Dream to scrap all the dlc for shotty Move Control support that is forced. Before they were forced to change AlWAYS having the xbone on than later always having kinect connected is forced...a unique way to play a game that genuinely has been wanted and liked thus far...not forced.

this game probably wont even make it to the west.

but yeh, nintendo are way out of their depth now, lost even. they cant keep up with the modern gaming industry, they would have to expand massively and make big investments and changes to their company if they wanted to be on a same level as sony or microsoft.

it seems they have instead chosen to sell gimmicks. and push these literally cheap thrills instead of investing in the cutting edge. they are clever because they use the gimmick to try to pass off obsolete technology as new. by instead claiming it a unique experience.

alien isolation wiiu. it doesnt exist. the wiiu is pointless. even the one game where the gamepad would have made perfect sense and elevated the game to another level, nintendo couldnt secure the game.

the gamepad is redundant. all the fantastic ways it could be used are only theoretical.

Cutting edge^^ yes, if cutting edge means subpar pc hardware. Nintendo is trying to change something that can work out, like with the Wii or it doesnt, like right now. What exactly can the PS4 do, what the PS3 couldnt, other than visuals, please enlighten me, oh ok, you have to pay for online play now. You can say its for a better online experience, because nintys online aint as good, but steam does everything and doesnt want a monthly fee. What is the PS4 capable of doing, to improve gaming, to change it, like it has never been before, other than visuals, please.

Nintendo tries to changr the gameplay, sony and ms just kept it like it is and added better visuals and act like it changed gaming forever, even though this is the least special gen ever.

I hope you didn't type your post on a DS4 or X1 controller, your poor hands!

Now, if you would like a next gen interface..

maniacmayhem3874d ago (Edited 3874d ago )

GIMMICK? Wow, nothing about this is a gimmick since it is actually apart of gameplay and helps with the immersion.

This is exactly what a lot of Nintendo fans wanted when using the gamepad with the WiiU. And even though their gaming hardware isn't on some super computer, HAL 3000, Nintendo proved with this E3 that they still have the best looking and most fun to be had type of games without relying on 3rd parties to carry them.

pcz3874d ago

''This is exactly what a lot of Nintendo fans wanted when using the gamepad with the WiiU. ''

i disagree. i think first and foremost people want a good game. a game should at first be good. if you are excited about how a screen on the controller will be used, you have literally missed the point. if the game is bad, no amount of gimmicks can save it.

nintendo have based their entire business model around this gimmick, which means they cant see the forest for the trees. which also seems to be the same for all nintendo fans right now.

But, i really dont believe people even care about the controller. when people hear about smash bros, beyonetta or mario kart etc, they dont think ''omg the controller will be used in amazing ways'' ... no, they are thinking about the game and how good it will be. as i said, the controller is redundant, nothing more than a distraction/gimmick.

@chrischi1988

you are wrong. it is all about graphics this gen. last gen was unique, people genuinely wanted something different and the wii was the answer. but it was a novelty that wore off pretty quickly. nintendo themselves knew this, and said themselves the wiiu would be for the core.

they pitched the console at the e3 reveal as a powerful machine capable of competing with sony/microsoft... lets be clear, compete on a technical level to be able to give gamers the experiences they demand. they simply havent delivered.

instead its merely the wii reincarnated for this gen. its the same story again, except this time, people dont want novelty or gimmicks. dont believe me? check the wiiu sales figures!

"i think first and foremost people want a good game. a game should at first be good."

That's a given and considering Nintendo's track record with their games is there any doubt they can't deliver a good game? None.

I played past Fatal Frames and they have always been fun and very scary. The use of the gamepad is just an evolution for this particular game.

"nintendo have based their entire business model around this gimmick,"

Really, because the main complaint seems to be that Nintendo hasn't utilized this "gimmick" enough. I think the whole statement of their fans not seeing it is also false as it's easy to criticize something you don't use or see no use in it. I don't think the trackpad on the DS4 is necessary but at least Sony is trying something different.

People want innovation and an evolution of consoles and when something comes out that's different that has the potential to change the way we play games we get people who yell and scream gimmick. How can the industry move forward when no one is willing to take a chance and shake things up with the conventional way we all play whether it works or not.

"when people hear about smash bros, beyonetta or mario kart etc, they dont think ''omg the controller will be used in amazing ways'' ... no,"

No we don't ... but when we hear about Fatal Frame or Splatoon then yes we do. I rather have it there for these types of games and others than not have it.

Chrischi19883873d ago

PCZ, history proves you wrong. The strongedt console never won a generation, until now at least. If graphics were the only important thing in the industry right now, it would be dumb to get a console over a PC. That is reality. PS4 and X1 are already outdated PCs. PC will always have superior visuals, so if that is the only freakin thing that makes a game good, then getting a PS4 is just as dumb as a Wii U. Visuals are no argument and only fanboys bring that up. Gaming is for gaming, having fun, when playing. If I want to watch something, O go to the cinema.

Ck1x3873d ago

Me too! It's entertaining to see them twist why Nintendo games suck, simply because games on their favorite are just mediocre :)

mamotte3874d ago

And this gamew wont be released in America... I dont know, cant we do a found or something to make it possible? A Kisckstarter to get the game translated or something ;_;

benji1013874d ago

I refuse to go to Kotaku. So I dont know if they stated that using the gamepad as the camera is not mandatory?
You can play with a pro controller.
With Nunchuck and wii mote
or with the gamepad with no gyroscope.
So...

I mean that was sort of obvious.
There was literally nothing on this franchise, then they ported Maiden of Black Water likely because it was the easier one to translate to modern devices being a Wii U title and all. And now we are getting a remaster of the 4th title. So it stands to reason that Maiden of Black Water was successful enough to start the whole process.

A remaster of the Fatal Frame 2 remake that was on Wii would be very welcome as well. That game is great. Scared the crap out of me the first time I played it as well lol.
