I personally couldn’t care less.

I never cared before when I started gaming with my ps2/x360 and I still don’t care now.

As long as the game content is rock-solid, I’m set to go. Way too many people this generation knocking devs for not getting games to the 1080p 60fps “standard” and I think that’s a shame.

I’d rather see more things happening on screen and a have a solid 30 FPS and whatever pixels rather than having the devs cut content/particle effects and whatnot to reach the 1080p 60fps bar.

MrSwankSinatra3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

Fun Fact: most PS2 games ran at 60 FPS.

Regardless of what you want to see, 60 FPS should be the standard over resolution. 60 FPS offers a better gameplay experience than 30 FPS ever could and anyone can't deny this.

Metallox3909d ago

Solid frame rate, couldn't care less about 60 FPS and huge resolutions.

Look at some Wii U ports, they're very good examples of how a stable frame rate must be one of the highest priorities of your games.

starchild3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

60fps absolutely is a lot nicer than 30fps, both for controller response and for the smoothness of the visuals.

But it's still not a good trade off for the consoles. Running a game at 60fps instead of 30fps requires literally twice the performance from the hardware. It's like suddenly having half as powerful a console. That's half the power for all the other graphical elements you want to render.

It's usually not a smart trade off. On PC you can have the graphics and the high framerates and it's not a problem because people can always upgrade, but consoles have fixed hardware and trade-offs always have to be made.

@ Metallox

I agree with you about the importance of a solid framerate. I'd say that having a solid, consistent framerate should be a priority, even if it is only 30fps.

Solid 60fps > solid 30fps > variable framerate between 30fps and 60fps > variable framerate under 30fps. In other words, 60fps is better than 30fps if you can achieve it, but a solid 30fps is better than a fluctuating framerate, and especially better than one that falls below 30fps.

Poor console gamers after all the promises made to them. Just like every gen lol.

HaveSumNuts3909d ago

Funny how Ubisoft were so proud to say they were targeting 60fps on consoles for Unity. Now because they can't reach it, it's suddenly harmful to games. Weren't they they also touting that Rainbow Six will be 60fps? Ubisoft has lied and back tracked so much that they seem to me like one of those compulsive lyiers who go on Dr Phil to get help.

mikeslemonade3909d ago

Poor console gamers..^ What? We got the best looking current AAA games and in 2015. Best value is PS4 still compared to PC. $400 the entry price to play great looking multiplats, exclusives, and sports games.

Back on topic: My personal opinion 40-45 frames is where it's a necessary sacrifice of hardware power on the consoles. If I had it my way I'd want 720p and 60 frames for all games and then save the rest of the hardware power for the actual graphics.

Really? Some of my best gaming came from consoles last generation. I couldn't imagine missing out on some of the console exclusives last gen and thats all 3 consoles.

donthate3909d ago

Sinatra:

I think what should happen is the developer decides what the resolution and frame rate should be to match their vision of how gamers should experience the game.

Personally, there has only been a select few games that I cared about the frame rate, and that was Titanfall and Forza 5. In both instances, the twitch and smoothness was important to the game play, but many games do fine without it like Halo in the past, and more recently Destiny.

What I find more troubling are vast resources spent on optimizing for very little return instead of trying to make a good game.

DriveClub another casualty in this war was delayed, made super beatiful, but the game was critically panned. Wouldn't it have been better for the developer to spend that time making more content or increase game immersion? Improve the experience?

Mr Pumblechook3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

Nicolas Guérin sounds like a spokesman for the PDF, (Parity Defence Force).

Having played The Last of Us (30fps) and The Last of Us Remastered (60fps) I can absolutely see the difference in fluidity with 60fps and the game is better for it.

Volkama3909d ago

Gameplay definitely feels better at 60fps, it is quantifiably more responsive.

But what about the pure visual standpoint? Did anyone here feel that The Hobbit looked "weird" at 48fps?

iNFAMOUZ13909d ago

halo 1, 2, 3, 4, reach says hi, oh and so does the million upon millions

Vegamyster3909d ago

@Volkama

Watching The Hobbit at 48 fps feels weird because no one is used to watching a movie above 24 fps. Regarding games it's not the same because you're the one in control of the camera/movement, movies have to limit how fast they can move the camera to prevent too much blur and nausea.

Volkama3909d ago

I didn't know the Hobbit was 48fps when I watched it, and I didn't notice anything weird myself.

Although I watched it on the PS3 or Xbox One, which may output at 24p either way? And I watched it in frame packed 3D, so I don't think the HDMI spec would even have allowed true 48frames per second 3D so I guess my experience of the film is voided completely :)

So you did find it to look odd?

ABizzel13909d ago

Assassin's Creed Dev is FoS.

60fps is a much better framerate than 30fps in almost all circumstances. It reduces latency for controls, improves animation, and provides a smoother experience and feel to games.

I completely agree when it comes to movies, I don't like true motion, because it looks unnatural, but a game isn't a movie with real life actors, it's a CG image.

If you're making a game that's graphically intensive then a locked 30fps isn't a bad trade off, but if you can achieve 60fps within your vision, then that's the obvious road to take.

mixolydian_id3908d ago (Edited 3908d ago )

60 fps makes for a more fluid experience.
Frame drops kill the experience.

Resolution is important... but 'p's' don't make a game great. Visual fidelity is the amazing icing on the cake.

I'd take 720p locked 60fps with enhanced graphic effects/techniques anyday.
1080p locked 30fps isn't so bad of course.

If you're a graphic artist in a games company that's paid 30K a year, it would suck to have your graphical work scaled down to a lower resolution.

It's a decision that needs to be made with reference to the game your looking to create.

Visual spectacle? 1080p
Fluid gaming experience and control? 60fps.

Consoles won't ever be the pinnacle gaming experience because it's a affordable/mainstream consumer device.

I like my FPS quick and fluid... doesn't mean that 30fps is bad... it'll be fine.
Everyone will have the same experience as you.

What would really suck would be to be playing a PC game with a pro player who has a 3k PC playing at 120fps at 1440p.
Basically, you don't stand a chance.

At least you are running the same performance as the competition on console.
So even if 15fps... you're all in the same boat... so the FPS argument is redundant.

It all comes down to the level of expertise within the AAA game developer world NOT scaling to the consumable device experience.

Compare "Transformers" to "Monsters inc".
CGI is way more affordable then it used to be and top quality expertise are readily available... the final film is rendered out and shipped. Job done.
Nobody has to sacrifice their hard work for the cinema screen.

It's like writing a massive letter to a friend (Game). Then having to fold it 4 times to fit it into a tiny envelope (Console).

Either something has got to give... or people should not give a F***.

Volkama3908d ago

@Abizzel "true motion" and other smoothing effects look weird because they interpolate processed extra frames.

The Hobbit was shot natively at 48hz, so it has the higher refresh but none of the fakery. More in line with a game rendering at 60hz.

blackmagic3908d ago

@Volkama
I did see The Hobbit at 48fps in theater and did feel it looked weird and I have spent a lot of time thinking about why including an additional screening of the 48fps version.

Some people attribute it to the fact that we are trained to watch film at 24fps since we have done it all our lives but this has never been an explanation which has sat well with me since I have always enjoyed gaming at higher framerates so much. After a lot of thought I think I figured out why it looked weird to me in film but better in games.

Film is about the suspension of disbelief, it's about taking a bunch of actors in make-up and costumes running around on sets swinging rubber swords and transforming them into hobbits, dwarves and elves. It is a subtle play of illusion because the eye is extremely perceptive and if the image is too detailed, if there is too much information, then the suspension of disbelief is broken. Suddenly your eye can pick out the artificial, realize that the hobbits, dwarves and elves on screen are actually actors on sets wearing make-up and costumes swinging rubber swords.

Games are the opposite. They are trying to create belief. They are trying to fool the eye into believing that the digital constructs on our screens are real and when more detail is given to our eyes, it looks better.

Ubisoft sure say some really stupid things. Some devs prefer to make games with a higher degree of response and control than others example Nintendo.

MrPink20133909d ago

I don't know of game game that felt better at 30 frames per second to that of 60. We all know the real reason and the author illustrated about Ratchet games. The reason why Insomniac changed from 60 to 30 was because they know better graphics sell more than higher frame rates. So they wanted at the time to push graphics on the PS3. It's the same thing with Ubisoft, they want to push graphics more at the cost of frame rate and consoles alwayes have a certain threshold. Developers will continue to push the hardware as much as they can. Just like Driveclub and Forza Horison 2 that just came out. If they could have achieved 60 frames per sesond while maintaining the effects and graphics they would have.

Vegamyster3909d ago

@MrPink2013

What's funny is their last 60 fps game R&C A Crack In Time sold over 3 times as much as R&C Into The Nexus which was 30 fps.

avengers19783909d ago

You STARTED gaming on PS2/360.... Damn I feel old.

Tapani3909d ago

Yeah, same here. I was just reminiscing the 80s and 90s games with my friend. We came to a conclusion that the PSX-era games without a very few exceptions were much better than the new, so called "AAA" games. 90s had the last good games. And no, it's not nostalgy, it's pure game design. Games used to be much more complex and the systems were designed with care and innovation.

I slowly lost my interest in gaming during the PS2 era and hence forth. Been just picking up the cream of the crop, but eventually, after finishing them new games, I just end up giving them a solid 8/10 at best.

Somehow, the 3D transition with the fundamental change in concept didn't translate too well into solid gameplay. Maybe Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time ruined us for good in the world of 3D. Shenmue 1-2 were good 3D games as well (especially the Japanese versions with brilliant voice acting).

Everything is just a copy of a copy of a copy, with a very few exceptions. Even most of the indie games copy 80s or 90s concepts, with again, some exceptions here and there.

Maybe it's the money, maybe it's the casualization (tutorials, minimaps, handholding) or maybe I grew old.

Nowadays people talk about silly things like frame-rate and resolution that have pretty much nothing to do with the concept or design of the game, except for the utmost outer layer of the onion, so to speak. No wonder developers put out crappy products, when the fans are nitpicking about the absolutely wrong things.

Enjoy your perfect frame-rate and resolution while I enjoy my classic 320x240 games with unstable framerate while getting more joy out of them.

Rant over.

Yes ha ha :-D me to, I started with commodore, the first game I played was pong in 79, so yes I feel old to :-D

mixolydian_id3908d ago

I was only a little kid... but I remember playing 'dizzy'.

Can't remember why it crashed so much... Just what the hell was the cassette player for? Playing music? or was it a data cassette?

We should all remember that Sony (although pushing 3d graphics) are responsible for redonkulous loading times on games.

Nes, Snes, N64 cartridges were a breath of fresh air.
Then again, nostalgia is blowing the hell out of the cassette because the game won't load ha ha

spacedelete3909d ago

what you and others don't know framerate is a part of the gameplay. the higher the framerate the smoother and better the gameplay. i'd like to see you play a game at 5 or 10fps and try telling me thats fun.

AuToFiRE3909d ago

You should care, now you have no buffer zone and will see much more stuttering.

Dontworrybhappy3908d ago

Agreed. I use to care until I played Destiny. The frames never drop in this game. Solid 30 over a stutter (BF4) 60 any day now for me!

N311V3908d ago

In the past I would have agreed with you but after playing Tomb Raider Definitive Edition and The Last of Us Remastered at 60fps it's hard to go back. I cringe when I move the camera faster than a snails pace and everything goes blurry at 30fps.

KrisButtar3909d ago

Lazy. I've played games at 30fps and then bumped them up to 60fps. The difference may not be great but it is smoother and helps immersion. Helps with controls as there is less input delay. I would rather them cut some minor effects than drop the 60fps if the consoles couldn't handle it.

SuperBlunt3909d ago

Naughty dog, kojima, and 343 would like to talk to you

T9003909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

Every uncharted released till date has been 30fps, just so you know :P.

How do we know about the next one, when Sony has a history of over promising and under delivering.

Eonjay3909d ago

Please read the article. The man is saying that even if you can do 60, you should stick to 30 because it looks more natural (even on PC). The man is insane.

T9003909d ago

And whos to blame for this garbage, consoles and their low standards, never had such limitations previously on the PC.

Any how it doesnt effect the PC platform since the community will release a patch to fix what the devs break. Happens every time.

Riderz13373909d ago

Naughty Dog already confirmed 1080P 60 FPS.

This is Naughty Dog, not Sony saying that.

Palitera3909d ago

If it doesn't "effect" PC gaming, why do you sound SO hurt?

Oh, yeah, we know. Console gaming leads AND rules the market.

Yeah, TLOU Remastered is smooth as butter.

I can just slowly move the camera or player character around and soak up the lush visuals and environments.

Gets my vote, but helps that the game itself is awesome!

DevilOgreFish3909d ago

I hope the PC community doesn't have to Mod this in too, jeez.

ProLogX3909d ago

I could not possibly disagree more.

Games feel so much cleaner and smoother running at 60fps.

Honestly I would rather developers start focusing more on frame rate than reaching 1080p.

BitbyDeath3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

Nope.
Not everyone games on a small monitor/tv.

ProLogX3909d ago

I game on a 55inch TV.

Still would rather play a 900p game at 60fps, than a 1080p game at 30fps any day.

Really can you imagine how nice Destiny would have been at 60fps?? Ugh. missed opportunity..

MRMagoo1233909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

@prolog

Dropping 180p wont get you the performance needed to get from 30fps to 60fps its pretty much right on double the power needed. Destiny would have never been 60fps unless they dropped it down to 720p and 720p looks like dvd quality compared to 1080p.

As much as I would rather 60fps, I would rather have solid 30fps at 1080p than solid 60fps at 720p.

Palitera3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

But that's not what gamers want. If anything, these last days of PSN "working" like a turd (and the absolute silence about it) have shown that what really matters to them is that the resolution on ps4 must be higher than on xb1. All the rest is irrelevant. No problem if the ps4 is cheaply made, the services are incredibly unstable and slow, it's just overpromising and hypnosis.
These idiots are the ones that will make us end the generation again playing BELOW 30 fps. But no problem. As long as it's 1080p and Xb1 gets 1079p it is all perfect in the land of infinite hype.

Angeljuice3909d ago (Edited 3909d ago )

The PS4 outperforms XB1 with or without Sony fanboys demanding it. Funny how the "cheaply made" console outperforms the overpriced cut-down "PS4 lite" that is the XBone.
You are blaming PS4 fans for Microsofts inability to produce a forward thinking console design.

If anything keeps titles under 30f/s for this generation, it'll be Microsoft designing a console around a multi-media first philosophy and the fool's they conned into buying into their (lack of ) vision.

ToddlerBrain943d ago

It’s funny because, at launch, it was universally panned for being unplayable. It’s a great game that holds up today. I’m glad they fixed it.

staticall943d ago

The only good things i remember from Unity are pretty graphics and really good descending mechanics (even though it sometimes didn't make much sense, when your character can drop down from like 10 meter height onto a flagpole perfectly).

Game is glitchy to this day, i was playing in it years after the release date (with all the DLCs) and it's still broken. You had to reload missions too often for my taste (characters do not spawn, you fall through the floor, getting stuck in falling/sitting/aiming animation, hidden blade stop working, assassination target running away at the start of the mission). Story was meh, searching for all the treasures wasn't enjoyable at all. Coop was pretty much useless, i've beaten every coop mission in solo. Helix rifts were awful as well.

Not saying i hate this game or anything, but it got too many problems.

Assassin's Creed (i know it's a controversial opinion) and Assassin's Creed 2 are still great to this day.

anast943d ago

Unity was okay. I prefer Syndicate and Origins.
