Those are hardcore games, and they'll probably be great, but theyre also very niche and Bayonetta 2 has already proven to have a negligible effect on hardware sales. It only went up 1k over the week before in Japan.
They need to buy, or make, a hardcore game with wider appeal than Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third.
This whole "kiddy system" thing got old long before the launch of the Wii U. Many of my friends own a Wii U and none of them are younger than 21 years. I am in my mid 20s and will game on Ninteno hardware for as long as I live.
Actually, Nintendo is still selling Wii U at a loss this year, but they're bottom line won't see much of an impact from more producing more Wii U consoles because they have they still have plenty of consoles that went unsold from last year... which isn't exactly a good thing.
Here's Nintendo statement:
"With respect to the impact of Wii U hardware sales on profit and loss, in order to sell 3.60 million units, we have to produce some more hardware units on top of our current hardware inventory. However, since the loss arising due to the hardware production costs being higher than our trade price was taken into account in the previous fiscal year, you could assume that there will be almost no loss this fiscal year for the sales of the 3.60 million hardware units."
Anyway, I agree that the article's headline should be "boost" sales not "Save" it. None of Nintendo's classic IPs can save Wii U and neither can the new ones just as we saw with GameCube and N64. All Nintendo has left is to focus on producing more good games (because they won't compromise on quality evne going into 2015) and ride Wii U out so they can eventually make some money off of its hardware (the install base likely will end up below 15 million units) and hopefully sell more software too.
Hmm, that statement is in stark contrast to what David Gibson said at Nintendo's Investor Meeting.
Nintendo is bundling multiple games with the Wii U hardware. I doubt they are losing money on each unit but are deciding to bundle 2 games with the Wii U for a price of $299.99.
I don t know who David Gibson is but he does seem to be the one that made many believe the Wii u was no longer selling at a loss - however he was wrong
The quote above re the "Nintendo Statement" is directly from Iwata from the Investor Q and A.
The wiiu just needs games and not saving. If we keep getting destiny's and watch dogs from 3rd parties the generous support thrown at the ps4 will come to an end. Sales might actually level out. Yet none of this needs to happen. Nintendo not being on top means we are all in for a treat. Just look at how they have upgraded to 3d over the years. I'm enjoying the progression.
So far they are the only pure gaming company left.
Ok Nintendo want older gamers, that's great but after they make that M rated game n I buy a wii u to play the game, what makes me keep it or even want a wii u for one game?" No!!! Got to have More then one M game need all the ps4 n X1 is getting for me to buy a Kid U system, lol heck kids mom dads don't want one, they hurt the wii u with the gamepad...that's the bottom line
Just because a console isn't doing as well as the leading console doesn't mean it needs saving. Hasn't the Wii U been doing about 40 to 60k a week since the release of Mario Kart 8? Also Smash Bros Wii U is coming out in a few months and its bound to boast sales.
i love the system, nintendo games are absolutely amazing, been playing DK TF lately, freakin phenomenal but without 3rd party, your system will no succeed :( :(
but it's an easy problem to fix in the next generation , what's important is the quality of the developers and nintendos studios are top notch
I feel the need to point out that Bayonetta may not have been what the japanese market needed to boost sales of Wii U, despite it still outselling any other console in japan. However Bayonetta 2 is what the West and Europe want on the console. Japan will see huge sales numbers as will the rest of the world when Smash U and Xenoblade Chronicles X come out.
Then we get Captain Toad, Yoshis Wooly World, Mario Maker, Splatoon, New Kirby, Xeno Chronicles X, Project CARS, Zelda U, Star Fox, and most likely a Metroid game anounced or hinted to next E3. Add Bayonetta 2 and Devils Third and that is 12 games total in the next year. That is 1 huge game every month for the next year. That doesnt even include the Indies coming, big one that comes to mind is Fast Racing Neo.
The games are coming and have already started with MK8 and Hyrule Warriors. Two of those games listed are rated M, three to four others will be Teen. That is not a kiddie line up at all. That is a line up to please everyone which is exactly what Wii U has been doing the whole time. I have 5 or 6 rated M games for my Wii u and can think of two or three I dont own yet. So saying it is a kiddie system is BS.
If anything XB1 and PS4 take themselves too seriously and only have rated M games and nothing else to offer. Thats great but I have a three year old and would like to play a game in front of him ,that doesnt involve beating the shit out of a hooker or blowing a zombies head off. Those games have their place but so do others and they all have a place on the Wii U. I can shoot zombies and play mario on the same console in HD. Let me see you do that on any other.
The Wii U has grabbed traction and is now gaining momentum. It will maintain that momentum next month when Bayonetta 2 comes out and keep it going all next year starting with Smash U and ending with a new Legend of Zelda game or a new Star Fox. This system is going to be here for the next 5 years folks. They already said that. By the end of next year this system will be selling very well and be very healthy with three times the games library of either other next gen console and that my friends is all it needs to boost third party interest again. It will be just fine. We should be talking about how we can help the XB1.
There was hardly any momentum for Bayo2 in Japan and I doubt it'll be any different here in the states where "beating up hookers and blowing up zombie" type of games predominately dominate.
And I can already tell you only game on the WiiU because if you didn't you'd know that both the PS4 and X1 have more than just rated M games regardless if their indie or not. ;)
The problem though is they are only indie gamesan d they are all side scrolling platformers. Nothing of high quality. Not to mention a majority of those idies are available for Wii U as well. So....
If ZeldaU can't save the Wii U nothing will, the Wii U been doing better since the release of MK8 but the still wasn't enough to get them over the hump, I hate to say this but Nintendo should consider coming out with a cheaper version of the Wii U that doesn't come with gamepad.
A game that hits the public the right way can definitely move consoles. But the only one on that list that has a chance of selling enough units to be a real success would be next year's open world Zelda. But, as big as Zelda has been, I think people don't care as much anymore. Certainly the hardcore do but there was much more excitement for Pokemon X&Y than for Zelda:ALBW. So that leads me to the ONE game I could see really selling the system to people; a grand, fully featured, open world Pokemon game.
There is no brand Nintendo has that can generate sales like Pokemon. If that game existed I could (and even then it may be a long shot) envision Nintendo selling something like 30-40 millon systems.
If not, than the only way they make that, admittedly unglamorous, number is by trying to sell the machine to people for a good 6 or 7 more years.
Nintendo could release arguably the greatest game of all time - like it did previously with the Wii, SMG...doesn't change the fact all the casuals are more interested in the newest sports franchise or another Call of Duty. That is thee only way these days to guarantee sales, but it means comprising on integrity, appealing to the lowest common denominator. Nintendo - unless they become another cookie cutter outfit are never going to be way ahead in terms of sales, these days. Think of Nintendo as BBC2, compared with Sony and Microsoft feeling more ITV/C4 respectively.
Only Nintendo can save Nintendo and i will tell them one word in order to accomplish that....ADVERTISING!!! Here in the UK there is next to no advertising for the system or the games!! Almost everyone i've raved to about Hyrule Warriors have said....Whats Hyrule Warriors?! Seriously!! People still don't know the Wii U exists here, no ad campaign, no stupid adverts of 'celebrities' sat together playing Mario Kart....nothing! It seems only the 'gamers' are aware of it's existence and even a few of them knew nothing of Warriors!! It's all well and good them producing A+ software but if they're not promoting the hardware to showcase the software, whats the point?!
Unfortunately no amount of advertising can make the Wii U a better product, or add back the many features that Nintendo cut out of it to accommodate the expensive gamepad. They really should have put more thought into the design of the console, if they were serious about being competitive, this generation.
Unfortunately no amount of advertising can make the Vita a better product, or add back the many features that Sony cut out of it to accommodate the expensive touchpad and memory. They really should have put more thought into the design of the handheld, if they were serious about being competitive, this generation.
So I already made one comment but I've been thinking and believe something should be elaborated upon. See, here is the thing; Nintendo is trying to sell the Wii U on it's own IPs. Nintendo has always done this but it never HAD to do it like has with the Wii U. The problem is that we act like maybe after there are a bunch of them out on the machine than people will want it like they want the PS4/XB1. But Nintendo sold less than 30 million N64s and Gamecubes on exactly that same set of games.
So this is my point; even with a collection of great games spanning many IPs (Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid, Smash Bros. etc.) Nintendo won't win this war. The reason being that not enough people care about this set of IPs that great games in their series will matter enough.
The one and only IP that Nintendo holds that still gets a large amount of people excited is Pokemon. The prospect of the best Zelda experiance ever will only get a relatively small group of gamers excited. The prospect of the best Pokemon experience could make the system hard to find for a holiday season.
Nintendo has no other options with the Wii U. It's 1st party games will only go so far and no 3rd party support exists. They need to do something and a large-scale console Pokemon game could turn things around.
I'm seriously considering buying a wii u before xmas. I have a PS4 and a hefty gaming PC. The problem though with both the PS4 and PC is that in terms of games purely about fun and not about killing something, they are few and far between. The main attraction about the Wii u for me is the 1st Party titles, such as your Marios and DKs and Zeldas etc. You just don't seem to get games that polished and pure fun on other platforms. I want to play mario with my friends and family in the same room. Old School. Not shooting something while having teenagers call me every name under the sun online.
zelda will probably be the only one to move consoles.
but even then, its time for Nintendo to start thinking about wii u 2 and rethinking their strategy.
right now the general opinion of the wii u is viewed as a kiddy system and secondary console with only first party games.
No one can save Nintendo, not even Mickey Mouse ...
Another stupid "save the Wii U" article.
Meanwhile Nintendo already announced back in May the Wii U is no longer being sold at at a loss.

The opening sentence and this article is clickbait. The Title should be "5 Titles that can boost Wii U Sales"
Super Mario Sunshine HD/N64 games added to the Virtual Console and I would be happy.
Their best sellers are Smash and MK8. AFter that Zelda but that doesen't exactly sell systems like Smash/MK8.
