It’s something of a given these days that gamers around their mid-twenties claim that adventure games were the ones that got them hooked on the hobby back in the day. Titles like Sam & Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle and Maniac Mansion are responsible for shaping the futures of more than a few of us (myself included), but the adventure game hasn’t aged well with evolving technology. One of the more recent stabs at the genre, Anna: Extended Edition, has also been one of the more divisive titles, receiving praise and criticism in equal measure.
Set in an abandoned sawmill nestled high in the Italian mountains, Anna challenges the player to uncover horrific clues and use them to solve puzzles related to your character’s dark past. The player’s behavior does not only determine the mental health of the main character but can also change locations and unveil new secrets leading to one of eight possible endings.
There is a dark presence plaguing an abandoned sawmill in the scenic Valle d’Aosta, in Italy, and it could be the titular character of Anna, thirsting for revenge. From indie developer Dreampainters, this horror puzzle adventure is based on authentic folklore, and set in a real location. You play as the male protagonist (unnamed), who has been dreaming of this Anna character, who he used to know… and he’s eager to find out why. However, what awaits him is anything but reassuring.
