People in China Actually Lined Up for the Xbox One

Eric Jou - I'll be the first to admit it: I didn't expect it to happen. But now, Microsoft has proven me wrong. The Xbox One is China's first official video game console in 14 years and, as of today, it is officially on sale.

Its exciting to see what amounts to a new huge market opening up to the industry and more importantly that there is genuine interest from gamers in that market.

On a side note, if China really explodes Japan could quickly get kicked to the curb given their Luke warm buying of consoles these days.

And once again I was right........as usual.

There were a lot of strong points against China (piracy being the main one), but with nearly 1/5 of the entire world's population living in one country (over 1 BILLION people) there had to be some kind of presence for gaming over there. Even if 1% of the country are gamers that's still 10 million potential buyers, and instantly puts them in the same boat as Japan's console market.

We'll see how well MS will do, and that'll determine how quickly PS and Nintendo get over there. It was a good move by MS to be first and establish a presence over there (although they needed it the most).

Like I said China has the potential to become the 3rd big power in the console consumer market, knocking Japan out of the top 3. But Japan will always be in the top 3 as a developer.

High risk = High reward / Potential losses

Depending on your plan of execution, and the quality of your product you can tilt the scales heavily in favor of either of the two outcomes. China was a risky bet, but hopefully it pays off for MS. Now they need to double down on the US, the UK, and China.

You're right, but is the market really open? Because most games are banned in China, so theres no system seller games like Halo or Gears of War.

I can see Ps4 having sucess over there with f2p games like Kingdom hunder fire, but the bro console not a chance.

I don't know why its such a surprise, X1 is a great console and China has been cut off from consoles for 14 years or whatever so I'd imagine whether they are mostly PC focused country or not there is still alot of folks who want a home console and unlike some regions there is no built in loyalty based on past brand experience. I imagine all consoles should do well there.

nintendo might have a couple of games that could not release there. Bayonetta perhaps but because nintendo already oversees the content of the games released then it might not be as bad for them when it comes to censoring games.

I highly doubt political rivalry among countries would drive customers away from buying any product.

China makes cheap solar panel, but America doesn't want to import them, therefore, progress is stalled.

You can't predict a market like this and that was the first mistake Sony fanboy's made.

They thought it would be like Japan, but Chinese gamers are more westernised than people think. They love the games we like.

I would lower expectations though Microsoft launched with 10 games and most of the games, are family friendly, so the Chinese gamers who want to play action games. may not turn up to buy the x box one.

Neverwinter and Forza would be two of biggest games on the list, that would help.

I am talking about straight numbers. How will we know what it does or rather who is responsible for reporting numbers. Think about it this way: We get number in the US from NPD. Who gives numbers for China is what I am asking. Do they have a consumer survey agency like that or is it something the government handles itself?

Even if these photos make it look like a lot of people lined up/showed up, it's actually miniscule when you put China's gigantic population in perspective. A line of about 100 people here in the US roughly equates to nearly 700 people in China.

Oh well MS probably still considers it a success, as I bet they shipped a few million over there to pad their 'shipped through' numbers up a bit.

Realise that a lot of PS4 games wouldnt be accepted just yet too, killzone, last of us etc probably would need to be re-realised to comply with government regulations. Thats why the xbox line-up isnt as good, they are lacking dead rising, ryse, and a lot of third party games.

One of the contributing factors might have been how the Chinese government shields their public from a lot of press. Since MS has been unfairly given that bad press, the Chinese have clear heads when thinking about it.

I thought we were past this, DX12 is already implemented in the Xbox One but not fully but this differences it will make for the One wont close the hardware gap as the PS4 will continue to improve its api

A recent interview from 4A (Metro redux) suggested that Dx12 will actually be a pretty big benefit to the Xbox. Apparently right now the draw calls are very much single-threaded like Dx11, and prove to be a real bottleneck.

It was quite an interesting interview, very frank and insightful. Somewhere on Eurogamer I think.

Prior to launch there were doubts that there would be any demand. There were no consoles, but that doesn't mean people will automatically want them.

There should still be doubts. Launch looks better than the pictures that came out of Japan, but that isn't really saying much. Will it keep selling?

well correct me if im wrong... but The Chinese and Japanese cultures don't take kindly to each other. I know that alot of chinese do not buy Japanese products and vice versa. Rather than sony electronics. But the interesting thing is that Foxconn is the worlds biggest electronics manufacturer, (making products like BlackBerry,[9] iPad,[10] iPhone,[11] Kindle,[12] Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U) but yet they dont sell in China.

As some ppl mentioned on the thread, with over 1 billion ppl (1/5 of world population), this can have huge implications for X1 and also the struggling gaming industry.

iphones sell in china, they struck a deal with china mobile last year. i was lucky enough to buy and sell apple shares just before official announcement. =P

china has 1.357 billion people, so its aafe to say that atleast 1.34 billion people would not buy it.

cit also has a massive rich poor divide. lots of rich people came about during its boom, basically new money. if they can capture that market, that 1% then it is gigantic. if it captures that 0.1% which is still amazing and more realistic than it is already more succesful than ms in japan.

people seem to not notice the amounts of disposable income some people in china have. people in hk was selling iphone6 to china for Us$2000+, iphone 6 was released in china a week or 2 behind hk.

I'll admit I'm one of the skeptics about the success of console gaming in China but I realized if the market can become big over there, then it will mean more revenue which will hopefully lead for more localization of games from the Eastern hemisphere.

The hell you say? Microsoft was expecting to ship 100,000 at launch and the pre orders alone passed 100,000 a few weeks ago.The XOne is going to be big in china just like it is everywhere except japan.Like i said though this is the last generation of consoles in japan.They are a handheld and tablet country.All consoles sales are low there.The only people that was thinking the XOne was going to flop in china was the sony fanboys

Again where did you see this? Link please? All I have come across is that they're shipping 100,000 units and confirmed 16,000 preorders. I have yet to see any factual proof or n4g article proving otherwise. Shipped does not equal preorders. Wouldn't microsoft want to advertise they presold 100,000 before launch to fuel sales and get some positive press out asap? That is a significant amount and would warrent that I would think.

The page for China's launch even says 100,000 shipped in chinese not 100,000 preorders. I know that Forbes made the same mistake in their most recent article as well. Otherwise according to them the week after there were 16,000 preorders they had 84,000 the following week, which would be nothing short of amazing if that were true.

Also love that there's not a single N4G or other page with confirmed 100,000 sales anywhere. With sales like that MS would be singing their own praises today and preparing to divert all their unsold units that way with official statements saying they've increased shipments due to unforeseen demand.

They've SHIPPED 100,000 units to test the market and see where it goes from there.

exactly! if they had more than 100k preorders than they would of sold out because they're only getting 100k units shipped in the first year. Not to mention I think MS or some one would be posting and bragging about 100k preorders right now. Especially Aaron Greenburg who always gloats about sales and preorders and hasn't said a thing like this.

China is not Japan. You are only going to find that shunning in that country. Everyone has their reasons why Japan reject it but I think we know why and it has little to do with games.

They also lined up by the thousand in India for it's launch.

1+ Billion people in China, only 400 million live in or above the poverty line, of those only 30 million are middle class and about only 1 million are actually rich.

When I was living in Shanghai 4 years ago now, I played my PS3 all the time. They had quite a few stores where I could buy video games. Of course, they were imported from HongKong, but the markup was negligible.

I also had the Xbox360, but using Live from there was not very good because of the slower internet speeds and Great Firewall of China. PlayStation 1st party titles were fine online, but EA games were terrible trying to connect. If you check Taobao right now, you can see that both of the now current gen consoles are being sold online to the Chinese people, along with all of the "banned" games, just imported from HongKong. The Xbox One is going for about 540 USD on Taobao.
