Ken Levine says ‘my work is under attack' after Bioshock Infinite's Elizabeth called a 'naive woman'

MMGN writes: Video game critic Anita Sarkeesian has initiated a powerful discussion about the role of female characters in games. While her "Tropes vs. Women" video series has prompted an aggressive and in some cases illegal backlash to her criticisms of gamers, she has led a compelling discourse, opening the doors to countless critiques of the sexualisation and victimisation of women in games.

One such critique, however, has hit the wrong note for Bioshock creator and Irrational Games founder, Ken Levine.

Levine takes offence to one such example in the article referring to Bioshock Infinite's iconic female heroine, Elizabeth.

With all there is to worry about in this world, this? Go to...

diesoft3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

Well, you are at a video game website so this is the place where we discuss issues related to our hobby, not a mainstream news site where we talk about real world events.

Edit: and to be clear, this isn't criticism of your comment. Whatever someone's hobby is always important to them regardless of how much there is to worry about in the world.

Picnic3532d ago

I am extremely interested in discussing the artistry and themes of videogames. Level design, art style. But I am not interested in the idea that videogames, especially ones set at the turn of last century, are supposed to be examples of forceful feminism. Some women have always been forceful feminists regardless of the age. Good on them. They'd probably like the new feminists even less than they ever liked anyone who they felt was trying to keep them down.

gamernova3533d ago

Back on topic, I think she is naive. Look at what happens in the episode dlc. She's always trying to save everyone even going as far as saving the other versions of herself. She never learned to pick the right fights but that's why I love her. Even if it's stupid, she goes hard. I like Elizabeth how she is. She's naive but not stupid.

wtopez3533d ago

On the other token, Anita Sarkeesian is a willfully ignorant woman. I wouldn't call her stupid cause she knows exactly what she's doing (pandering, fear-mongering and making a ton of money at it).

rainslacker3533d ago

Dunno why she's given credit for opening compelling discourse. It's pretty apparent to most she isn't willing to discuss anything that criticizes her point of view. That isn't discourse, that's shaming others into submission.

Most of the discourse lately is more about the corruption of the gaming press, and not really about women's issues.

Sly-Lupin3532d ago

I always wonder when I see things like this.

All I know about Sarkeesian is her Youtube videos, which are well-articulated and well-thought out. That, and random Internet people giving her random shit like this. And 56 agrees? Yikes.

rainslacker3531d ago

If that's all you know about Sarkeesian then I could understand why you'd wonder why so many disagrees. If you delved deeper into her "well-thought" out arguments you would notice they're cherry picked arguments, which admittedly are well-articulated...just done so in a manner which isn't entirely accurate.

People give her random and constructive shit. She chooses to ignore the constructive stuff, and only point out or addresses the hostile ones, and not the ones that actually wish to discuss her views in a positive manner.

Sly-Lupin3530d ago

Of course they're "cherry-picked" examples. Of course she's focusing on examples that reinforce her points. So far, she has yet to misrepresent a single game, and her criticism has been valid.

Are you saying that, for her series on tropes and women in games, she needs to also focus on examples that defy tropes? Because that's not how these things work.

As far as I've seen, Sarkeesian is providing some academic discourse that games media desperately needs, and for her trouble has been inundated with immature, knee jerk antipathy from the most ebarassingly moronic of our peers.

The Robertson guy actually has a point...

"a naive woman who, despite having literally world-changing powers, spends the game throwing health potions to a man"

longcat3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

With Elizabeth, she grew up as a virtual prisoner in a heavily oppressive society - of course she starts out naive.

She was VERY different by the end of the game but i'm guessing they never made it that far.

mixelon3533d ago

Actually he's quoting Adi Robertson.

Lol, Anita is getting blamed for everything. XD

longcat3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

^^^

Yeah, i got things mixed up there

Gaming is one of the few joys i have left in life....when it gets attacked, i rage. Can't help it

Bathyj3533d ago

Thats a gameplay mechanic. If the Elizabeth was a man or even a teddy bear that threw you health would this be an issue?

Beside, isnt it saying the men are not so all powerful and that sometimes they need help. Are they saying women shouldnt help men? God, we're all one species here, whats wrong with contributing?

Bathyj3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

Is is a sexist act to make a man a sandwich as well? I wonder if the girls at subway know that.

Women who were combat nurses in the war must have felt so objectified for treating all those soldiers injuries. They should have stuck up for their gender and just let them go untreated.

-Foxtrot3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

I think it's more to do with the fact that she can't control them that well or is scared she'll open a tear and not be able to close it. Remember that gameplay we saw years ago with her opening a tear to save a hurt horse...she couldn't control it

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Plus lets not forget

<SPOILERS>

She's not at full power untill the end

Ozmoses3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

there are plenty of games where a woman is the lead role or supporting role..

I mean you don't see squirrels talking shit about Conkers exploits? Hedgehogs don't hold Sonic as a sell-out. Geckos didn't scream sexism when Gex hit the scene.

I don't understand why everything has to be a statement about something..

You don't see me whining when I play TLOU mp and it all of a sudden randomly makes my character on the screen a female/female voice, even though on the customization screen it clearly shows a male figure.

to sum it up in gamer terms

"I mean Sonya Blade can hold her own..." Not to mention Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Ada Wong, Meryl Silverburgh, Nariko, Elena Fisher, Ellie, Tess, Marlene... just to name a few.. all women, all strong characters

nuff' said!

I don't recall exactly... but wasn't that character cut-off from a lot of the "real" world (in their fictional universe)? And so if she was naive/ignorant of many things... it would be entirely logical and understandable...

incendy353533d ago

Exactly, Elizabeth was naïve to DeWitt't world at first because she had never experienced it but she was hardly a naïve person. She is the strongest character in the game and one of the strongest characters ever written, male or female. I think the author maybe didn't understand the story or plot.

UnHoly_One3532d ago

Yes, precisely, but that doesn't fit their agenda of making everything about sexism.

Mr Tretton3533d ago

Extreme 'Feminism' is running rampant today. It's an excuse for attention whoredom most of the time, as opposed to having any worthy cause. It's simple: ignore them.

cyclindk3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

I'm not saying Western (I mean this in the sense of the idea of Western society, not geographical location.. .which also make no sense because everything is technically WEST of everything else... you just keep going west and you end up back where you started....... anyway)

I'm not saying Western society is perfect, still much to work on, but really this isn't the 60's, freedoms are in place already, yes those in regard to gender, sexual preference, et cetera still need work, but there are no front lines anymore for this sort of thing. Now trying to analyze each individual's RIGHT to portray characters in any light they choose... kinda silly, especially since AFTER THE FACT it is really left up to ANYONE's interpretation...

Mr Tretton3533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

Of course. But this new modern feminism is extremely irrational. It's a fundamentalist movement by females with a victim mentality, seeking power, and male white knights trying to get brownie points from women. Internet phenomenon. The things I've seen these women say is just unbelievable. Especially that 'rape culture' nonsense.

Top 10 Rarest Xbox 360 Games That Are Worth a Fortune

"And lastly, famous Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling helped to create the action-RPG’s setting. What’s really fascinating, though, is that the game was partially financed by taxpayers from Rhode Island (which allegedly lost the state millions of dollars). Yikes!"

1. Now infamous Schilling
2. No allegedly, it did. And they couldn't pay it back.
3. What really lost the money wasn't the SP release but the MMO they were working on. This was supposed to be an introduction into the MMO world.

Soy284d ago

I hate counting limited editions for these lists. I mean, they're made to be rare and expensive. It's far more interesting to hear about the NCAAs (even if most people know that one already) and the El Chavos than some massive hit that came with a $200 statue at retail.

gamerz283d ago

Me too. Here's the best I can do:

El Chavo Kart $90.14
NCAA Football 14 $87.72
Spiderman: Edge of Time $75.94
Spiderman Web of Shadows $75.09
Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions $67.76

Christopher283d ago

Wow, El Chavo Kart is not at all what I expected by the name. 100% looks like a Sackboy Kart game.

Soy283d ago

It's so odd that so many Spider-Man games are seemingly given lower print runs, even if they're not the best games.

jznrpg283d ago (Edited 283d ago )

Most Xbox games don’t hold as much value compared to other systems. Kameo, Blue Dragon, Last Remnant , and a handful or 2 of other games that I kept.

Fallout 3 and Bioshock Infinite are the rarest games of all time.

8 Best Games Set In A Multiverse

One of the biggest TV and movie tropes in the last decade has been the multiverse, the idea of exploring multiple dimensions to uncover alternate versions of existing ideas. From both a business and creative perspective, it makes sense why established franchises are shaking things up in this way.

However, there aren't many video games latching on to this trend, as rendering multiple worlds in real-time is a difficult feat and the medium is relatively young in comparison to its contemporaries, making crossover opportunities more difficult. Still, there are a few great titles that manage enough to overcome these challenges, and here are some of the best examples.

While I love someone mentioning Planescape, not really multiverse. Planes and dimensions, yes. But, they are typically their own locations and are very rarely tied to another 'verse' let alone another plane. The only things that are directly tied are the ethereal and material planes. Otherwise, they are dimensions created of their own design and goals by the creator/owner and not comprised of 'their own version of another dimension'.
